Removing the “dislike” button just benefits clickbait videos.
and youtube rewind XD
@@nnlaau Lol I was thinking the same
That's a really good point.
Benefits unpopular figures like Joe Biden
Benefits unlikable ppl
I felt Linus perfectly summed it up in his tweet:
"Imagine if Amazon hid 1-star reviews so you could send your feedback to the seller but no one else could see the product was crap.
Sounds like a super sensible move to me."
Linus formulated that sentence perfectly!!
really good way to put it 👌👌
Bro Linus is just perfect
wait, Didn't MB say the same thing?? 6:31
Amazon has blocked my negative reviews on a crappy product before.
From an education-seeking standpoint, removing dislike counts has made it near impossible to discern what tutorials are credible and worth watching and what tutorials aren't.
Its not that UA-cam dont know, they dont care. They only need you to click a video, not watch it! They can claim to their advertisers that you are a viewer even if autoplay has selected a video that you definitely wont watch
They just want to protect their political buddies that they cater to now. Been that way for a while with the search results benefiting them all the time.
@Kamaldeep Singh Vanced is another gpod one. I got extension for my pc and vanced for phone
@@azazaeldevile2506 vanced is now gone i think right?
@@tylere.8436 Nope, they actually just want to make more money. If you waste time watching useless videos you wouldn't watch if you saw the dislikes, thats more ad revenue for them. UA-cam exists to make money, it doesn't give a sh*t about politics or anything else for that matter.
Honestly, its poor decisions like this (by UA-cam), that make me wish there was a competitor. I would be more than happy to move to another platform that would allow users the option to freedom of Speech, and allow your VOTE to be counted regardless if it a like or dislike.
And yet you're still here, so they don't really care. People will stick with the platform regardless. :P
I wish a competitor for youtube did exist but it will never happen, youtube is just too big
Yes
The only problem is that youtube and google are the two largest monoplies in america. It appears that these governments love monopolies and pretend like they're against it. SMH
@@danymajr I agree... I'm going to get to the point that... I'm going to give everyone a "Dislike" with the comment of... due to the You Tube algorithm not showing the Dislike number... and maybe, just maybe, the Channel owners will start to complain to You Tube management to bring back the number system. After all... if they show the Like number, its useless unless you have something to compare it to like the "Dislike"... the sad thing is... its NOT the Channel owners fault, but they are going to get the brunt of it... its a shame.. and you're right, it is a monopoly
Next thing:
IMDb is removing rating system because it hurts movie studios.

The biggest downside so far in my experience with the dislike button being hidden is when I click on a video and I see the amount of likes, I can't help but wonder "Is the 50 likes contrasted with 1000 dislikes? or is it 50 likes and 10 dislikes? I'll never know." Your first rebuttal point about not knowing if the videos is worth my time is the best one. Great point that the comments can be even nastier because now the people who dislike the video don't really feel like their vocie is heard. I like your idea to only allow dislike ratings to be posted for people who have watched a required length of the video (let's say 10% continuous).
I can't believe this video still has no dislikes, I guess it's just perfect!
This is anti-consumer. The next logical step for society would be to prevent us from being to able to negatively review products we purchased, or movies we watched, or restaurants we visited.
So many stores already do that.
Netflix did that
lmao what thats the last thing i want
This is the furthest thing from being logical. I am thinking about switching to another plateform. Toturial video will go to different plateforms and the quality of youtube video will drop massivly. Pretty much like communism in a way.
@@Turnpost2552 Oh I hope so. I hope we start seeing fierce competition from new user generated video platforms.

I think youtube should add the dislike button on the video and on the comment. Imagine comment have dislike count.
Subsciptiom feed algorithm doesn't show all my videos now too. Why do I pay youtube monthly?? The app is bloated now too with useless content
Nothing is worse than Google+ integration
They should let creators choose whether or not it’s visible on their videos!!!!!!
I have to admit that since UA-cam hid the dislikes my use of this platform decreased to almost zero. Beside Mr Marques I watch little to nothing else. It’s weird that Google didn’t find a better solution, like letting the content creators choose if they want to share the dislikes with the community or not. Weird solution to remove the dislikes and to simply ignore all the backlash afterwards.
I agree with Marques - long live the dislike button!

As a programmer, The dislike button helps a lot when looking for tutorials that are good and helped people.
My first thought
And it helps with tutorials in general, and who to trust and who not tk
Seriously. There are so many videos that have a title that makes you think it's relevant, but then you find out it's not. The dislike helps you know in seconds if you want to invest time watching it

Excellent video. Love how you brought in both sides and of the issue. You are so knowledgeable on the subject matter and have a very eloquent way of explaining it. Thank you.

Let’s be real here, the dislike counter removal is not really for “creators”. This is to protect big corporations, movie or game studios etc from dislikes on crap things that they do.
Forgot to add the mass dislikes that the White House videos of its current admin gets.
THIS
@@GraphicJ That. That is the real reason.

The ratio will indeed be a MASSIVE boon to shitty games companies putting out soulless or even abusive cash-grabs. They can now show their "thousands of likes!", because the MILLIONS OF DISLIKES are hidden...

In every review form youtube has ever sent me over the past 5-6 years ive always said that dislikes should be more useful. being able to see at what point in the video the button gets hit would be a gamechanger and make it much more constructive! seeing if it's something you said/did, if people are immediately disliking etc. Not only does this change take away that valueable info from viewers, it doesnt do anything to help creators. we can still see it
i like this idea, the only place i’ve seen something like this done is on soundcloud, you can leave a comment at a certain point of the song to say what you think of it. or a lot of people will leave comments at the beginning/end of the song to leave a general comment.
What's worse is the creator sees how much people dislike the video but watch it anyway and leave feeling burned. EVERY channel has a least-popular video and the channel knows which one(s) but the users don't. The embarrassment is GREATER for the creator knowing people are watching something they won't like.

@@iliyasshaikilu This is so stupid.
Of course it's an expression and people can dislike stuff because of stupid reasons like "oh I don't like your voice" but it also works as a rating system for the content (good or bad, true or false...)
For example there are a lot of tutorials here on UA-cam.
If I see that it got a lot of dislikes then I know that there is probably something wrong with the tutorial. The information can be outdated or the tutorial leaves some important steps out. A tutorial that has a lot of dislikes shows me if I should spend my time on this or if I should look for another tutorial about the topic.
@@iliyasshaikilu You must be joking.

UA-cam: "We protect you by CENSORING your opinions"
lol
“Censoring your opinions” is your intelligence this low that you say a button is an opinion? That’s not an opinion. An opinion is thought out allowing others to challenge them. No one can challenge the “thoughts” of a button. How primitive do you have to be to express your opinion, through “good” or “bad” are we cavemen or intelligence beings? If you have bad thought about the video say it in the comment section so others can reply and challenge you. Pressing the dislike button is a weak and soft move meant for those who don’t want to be challenge. So glad UA-cam is taking initiative and making people express their negative in the comments so every can see where their IQ is.

It just means that instead of getting bombed with 6,000 dislikes, you'll get bombed with 6,000 comments saying "you suck" "ratio" "L" "use me as a dislike button". i completely agree about your point marquess i remember recently faced that specifically in tutorial videos and solving some issues and i think that's the worst side of this update.
I feel like a dislike is one of the least hurtful ways for a viewer to show the content is lacking. I would take a negative like to dislike ratio over a weirdly specific comment pointing out how my video sucks because the spacing between my eyes is weird, any day of the week.
Pretty sensible comment for someone with so strangely distanced eyes.

UA-cam being a search engine is one of its most valuable qualities
Love your thomas the train vids
I agree. And its one of my favorite points he made and completely aligns with how I use this platform.
However, I’m pretty sure UA-cam’s response to this would be “we own Google. Google is our search engine. Use the Videos filtering feature of Google for this from now on.”

yeah
@@thecarmellofellow Google's search for videos and UA-cam's search for videos are sometimes almost completely different.
I really hope UA-cam doesn't go that route.
And the one thing UA-cam hates. They don't want it to be an unbiased search engine (as evidenced by the declining quality of search results and constant recommendations not even tangentially linked to your search in the results). They want it to be a sponsored content platform, where they push you the video, you watch the video, you press like, you watch next video ad infinitum.
if a creator cannot deal with a dislike, he/she does not deserve the tittle of creator! This move is indeed their best attempt to hide and silence the view point of the majority on a particular issue or topic of discussion, like political agendas, social engineering, wokeism and the like.
Thanks for the video, just listen to you made me cool down about the issues, like I wanted a rant about what they did, but it was way better how you talked about everything.
Another important point: This WILL ALTER they way people use the like/dislike system! Now that people understand it's no longer useful to look at the like-dislike ratio, why bother contributing to a broken system? My disgust with YT is at an all-time high.
UA-cam claims dislikes still matter for content recommendation lol. Since when have you used the dislike button thinking about future recommendations?
Good, if you feel any disgust then you’re a disgusting person. What comes out of you is within you. UA-cam is taking the initiative to further the mental strength of UA-cam watchers. Having them speak for themselves and speak on their views rather than the views of others and using it as their own. People will no longer judge a video off of the like dislike video and have to read thought out comments or watch the video themselves. “Another important point” telling us that what you’re saying is important, thinking for us. “This WILL ALTER” telling us what will happen and putting it in all caps to make it seem like it’s going to happen. so glad I can see these flaws through comments rather than a dislike button
@@TheTruth-13 “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” There is no reason why UA-cam should remove a way for the audience to communicate with the creator and themselves. It may be your opinion but the vast majority of people disagree with this and it just shows how UA-cam is becoming more and more distant with its community and is trying to appeal to advertisers and corporations instead of the people that made them. UA-cam is trying to fit in with Instagram, TikTok, etc… by becoming more like them and lesser than the original platform it used to be. They need to listen to the people. UA-cam “Broadcast Yourself”
@@TheTruth-13 You disgust me. Making the world all "nice" is making it all "tolerant" instead of just. Want to know why sex offenders and murderers get the chance to reoffend? Because they're tolerated more than they deserve. If you utterly destroy a person or their rights, you forfeit your own. Don't want to show basic consideration? Then you don't deserve basic consideration.
Society and the world should base itself, its actions, and its self-worth on responsibility to PREVENT problems, but someone who rapes and murders a child gets an unhappy vacation in prison if found guilty, instead of being made an examples of by being horrifically and publicly destroyed or even used for medical experimentation. Their life should be made a living hell for as long as possible and society should be willing to do ANYTHING to them.
If people's mental health (happiness) is negatively affected, it's because they don't have what it takes to participate in a meaningful or appreciated way and are too weak and insubstantial to do anything but complain and shrivel up when others make it known. They can't or won't learn.
Enjoying the pandemic and global warming? Well, everyone was so focused on what's normal they didn't do a damn thing to fix anything or deal with the consequences of their actions. And big business and government went along with that, exploiting the weak, stupid, uninitiated and IRRESPONSIBLE for everything, knowing they'd come out on top while losers and the losers who tolerate them would pay through the nose for costly "solutions" to the very problems they caused themselves or were encouraged in by those seeking to take advantage of them.
Have fun going through the comments. I dislike you and the billions of people like you, but life is just. Nature isn't using a dislike button to clean up the planet. It's just wiping idiots who demand less public negative feedback on their work for the sake of their mental health off the fucking planet. Them and some people like me who are made to tolerate them out of survival.
You should be grateful for any feedback at all. It's a warning that is being removed by people nurturing the idiocy that is so common in a world that cares more about a happiness based on what's normal than on dealing with reality to actually get things right.
@MooseGoose “a way to communicate” you must have a primitive mind and can only establish communication through a button rather than a thought out response in the comments telling the creator what you didn’t like to give them a better perspective. But I can understand why primitive minds would rather hit the dislike button to confuse the creator on what they disliked. Lower forms of intelligence have a hard time understanding what communication truly is. They would rather be primitive and communicate through “good” and “bad” like cavemen
Let's be honest here, YT removing dislikes is less about the so called "dislike mobs" and more about the trying to protect their own corporate ass, like that of the infamous YT Rewind.
Couldn’t be said any better
That's the opinion that above commented youtubers did not mentioned, i don't know why?!
100 percent, if you look up the most disliked UA-cam videos it's all companies with UA-cam being at the top, the only exception is PewDiePies video titled dislike this video where he literally says he wants to make it the most disliked video on the platform
I think nintendo needs some mention here
your opinion, and it is a silly one.
Absolutely fuming and furious at the fact that they removed it. Unsubscribed from UA-cam premium because of it.
How is hiding dislikes improving the mental health of creators is the creator can still see the dislike counter?
Imagine if Amazon got rid of 1 star reviews. I'd drop prime in a heartbeat.
Imagine Rotten Tomatoes dropped reviews and started deleting negative comments. Oh wait.
in times where you can buy reviews (positive for yourself and negative for your competitors) to get in the buy box, that isnt saying much anymore anyways
Completely agree that vote ratio is very useful as a viewer to make decisions on what is worth my time. It’s also useful as a creator to incentivize making better videos. Brigading is a real problem, but as a computer scientist & engineer it’s surprising to me that there isn’t a better solution than “burn it all down.”
Can second this as a software engineer - how else am I going to know what code I can blindly copy paste off of UA-cam??
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT POINT!!!! Thank you for that comment. @Stuff Made Here
Well there is but that's not what the goal is.
Its because of everyone shitting on Biden and how bad everyone really hates him. Not a single video is rated positive ever and they actively work to hide and change it
This point is incredibly important. Look no further than Steam to see that there’s something that can be done. Steam reviews will mark periods of “dislike bombing” or “periods of off topic discussion” it shows that even if a video gets decimated just having a little blurb showing that is was disliked bombed is not out of the question.
I think the real reason was that they don't want you to have the best time possible, they want you to spend a long time on the site. People often engage more of their attention with things that make them angry than with things that make them happy. If youtube can get you to watch a video that frustrates you, negativity bias will cause you to pay more attention and want to hear more.
I agree with you! I really hope youtube listens to your feedback
Couldn’t agree more. Anytime I am looking for a tutorial or an instructional video the first thing I look at is the like to dislike ratio.
Yeah, it's a good feature that allows users to know if the video is scam/clickbait
Looks like YT wants to give the scambaiters all the opportunity to shine.
Jokes on UA-cam, I’m not updating my app so I can still know what videos are getting dislike.
@@JayNice_ not for long
@@JayNice_ hmm I don’t have any pending updates and my app still shows me dislikes. Weird.
You know what hurts a content creator's mental health more than dislikes? Stress over whether their videos are gonna be randomly demonetized this time or not.
Yes omg. It's so stupid how youtube is combatting all the wrong issues.
@@risolotl2602 Completely agree. In fact I would say that UA-cam is doing more harm than good here. These are the kinds of things that stereotypically get dismissed as "SJW snowflakes that don't want their feelings hurt." There are plenty of real social problems (such as content creators' mental health) that get treated like a non-issue because influencial people and companies pander to these social problems in all the wrong ways. From movies and video games getting backlash for trying to shoehorn diverse characters into the plot by including one of every minority group, to SJWs contributing to transphobia by getting unreasonably angry on behalf of transgender people, resulting in an association between anger and transgender people.
I'm tired of real problems (mental health) being swept under the rug because of poor decisions (removing dislikes) taking the spotlight. Especially on a platform like UA-cam, which contributes more to the mental health decline of its content creators than the commenters ever could.
such a good take
Lmaoooo
My God lots of my favorite creators are affected by this bullsh
"It's to protect small creators"
"We are making the number of dislikes only visible to the creator"
If the creator sees it the whole reason for the removal does not make sense.
You expressed all our grievances....
We all agree!!
I can already see the “use this as dislike button” comments that are going to flood every video
They are ONLY doing this because all vax and biden videos have a huge dislike ratio. Their narrative is failing and they don't want people to know... damage control.
@@edisnione what a dumb and wrong thing you just said.
@@edisnione confirm, really dumb, as the many antivax an trump supporters
@@edisnione can’t believe someone found a way to politicise this
He is right but it's not just politics; it's big corporations, movie studios, game studios, etc. You've gotta be high if you think they care about "creators' mental health".
I might as well make a scam channel and clickbait and use harmful links cause no one will see the dislikes 🙃
Lol
I still see the dislike count, so I could tell if it is a scam lol
@@Sartfla most likely they won't do jackshit because a couple thousand people are nothing to a company that literally in the s&p500
YT Realized PEOPLE NOT BUYING K O R O n a & V A X SCAM and disliking that FAKE CRAP by 100s of THOUSANDS - THIS is THE ONLY REASON!
And make UA-cam more money
When I found out this was happening, I was not surprised, but I never expected them to actually do it
As a software intern who searches for tutorials, I always use the ratio to determine about the video quality. Because tutorials are 10 min - 3 Hr commitment. I need to know wether it's worth 😅
Looking at the like to dislike ratio is the VERY FIRST thing I do. It saves me lot's of time. Disappointed in this decision :(
Agreed, high dislike ratio videos are always the best!
i actually never do
@@Kummituslinna except for tutorials and how tos
@@bloodhoug82 so if you want to learn something(I'm supposing and hope that you do that), you just spend time checking the video if the information is valuable or not? In 99% of cases the like/dislike is accurate and can't help you if it's helpful. But hey, if you don't value your time, this will be a good move for you.
@@EnigmaticLucas yes, because all that comments from the bots telling me to access a website to get free pictures of "her" are so so useful. Totally agree with you...
I can't tell you how many hours I've saved being able to click off tutorials after seeing a weak like-dislike ratio, and having to waste extra time to check the comments individually will significantly increase time wasted and cause more frustration. And again, any video will a boosted amount of dislikes will affect creators MUCH less than what they will see in the comments.
I mean, can't creators hide like-dislike ratio's on their own videos manually? I feel as though this issue is a no-brainer.
Precisely.
I publicly like this.
100%
Even adding a feature to let creators hide dislikes on their channel while still showing likes would be fine, if you go to a tutorial and dislikes are hidden, assume it’s dodgy and find a different one
Thats the point. They want you to watch all videos cause of ads etc, more you spend time on searching that perfect tutorial more money you make for them. Simple. Evil.
Love you man. You just explain soooo easily
Why would youtube help you find the correct tutorial right away when they can make you spend hours wallowing through the wrong ones, watching ads all the time?
Absolutely the worst decision UA-cam ever done.
Idk if it's the worst decision yet... But it's pretty bad.
@@travisminneapolis imagine in the future, youtube removed the ability to comment 💀
@@robatokicks6132 On UA-cam's friend's videos - the ones they are actually protecting here from public response - you'll find the comment sections already disabled...
This is so fucked. UA-cam feels so different now it's fucking horrendous. We gotta find a new site and move content there.
I have a feeling censoring comments or gradually removing them completely is what's coming next
The worst ever
This is the worst thing UA-cam did in ages.
I sincerely hope that they bring this feature back. Thank you so much for making this video! Hopefully more creators come up with videos like this and UA-cam listens.
I also hate it so much that I dislike every video until UA-cam returns it back.
The worse thing YT has done recently was to try to drown its users in AD's to convince them to buy premium.
Still don't have premium and use an ad blocker, but anytime I'm on my phone it bothers me to no end.
We all wish their was a better alternative to YT, but one hasn't become available yet so YT does what it feels.

I just started my own channel a year ago, and I know how it feels to get bad comments and dislike but I agree with you, we, creator, use that information to improve ourself, to improve our video.
Now I’ll just grunt like a caveman towards my screen when I dislike something. That’ll show ‘em.
The thing that makes UA-cam great is that fact that IT'S NOT LIKE OTHER SITES. You have no idea how many times I'd come across a Facebook, tiktok or an ig post and all I think is "how can I dislike this?"
exactly
Same
Totally agree 💯
Yup and I think they are doing it mainly because they want their viewers to watch the video no matter how many dislikes it have which means more watch time which means more revenue. So it's not user friendly but revenue friendly for both YT and the creators.
Then you're forced to shitposting in the comments
This is the most disgusting thing youtube has ever done.
wow , even the FBI got into the argument ...!!!
I can imagine one of the police cadets throwing a used bottle onto the floor aggresively while said cadet says "This is the MOST disgusting thing UA-cam has ever done!"
Even worse than yt rewind 2018
Thank you FBI
A year+ on and I'm still frustrated they took the dislike option away - not only for videos, but also for comments, however long ago that was.
Your review is spot on. Except I don't even think this is going to prevent "bombing". It's still possible to dislike, so people will keep doing it.
**Disliking should require a minimum watch time and/or to input a short explanation.**
That would not only reduce useless dislikes, but also help content creators get more helpful feedback.
