Dmitrii sent this to me via Discord and asked me to pin it under the video. I asked him to post it himself, but the post immediately disappeared for some reason so here we are :p -LS
    -------------
Hey, thanks for an amazing video on my extension!
I wanted to clarify a couple of your concerns.
    1. What's in it for me?
First of all - it's extremely cool to make something that over a million people use. It looks very nice on my resume (I've already been contacted by a few of VERY interesting companies). So this alone justifies the efforts that I've put into this extension. A month ago nobody knew about me, and today Linus Tech Tips releases an entire video dedicated to my pet-project. I think it's worth not watching youtube videos for a month.
    2. Regarding "sketchy" sponsors - I've googled every one of them, and didn't find anything negative. The VPN that you mentioned exists for 10 years, has over a million Google Play installs and a score of 4.8 - so I thought it's good enough to be a sponsor. If anything negative came to my attention - I would terminate relations immediately.
    3. Regarding extension users data.
Every user sees exactly what is being sent to the server, and since this data is anonymised - I do not believe that it's sellable. We do not access UA-cam\Google account name or email used with the account. We create a random anonymous ID - and that is the only user identifier that we store.
    Cheers!

I'm scared but curious to see what the change means for the near future, but time will tell.
Most likely, we'll have that false positivity create a shallow culture that shushes down mental health among the latest generations of young viewers and makes them think depression doesn't exist and should be shamed to silence etc. (worst case scenario I can imagine). Besides the monetization practices that hurt our collective well being.

One bad thing from each of a few random big corporations:
AirBnB promotes homelessness, buying up low income housing and converting it to high income short stays.
IBM supported Nazi Germany and utilizes anti-consumer AI tools.
Cloudflare recently protected a number of child pornography sites for long enough that the owners got away scot free, though the sites did at long last lose their protection. They then lied about it.
Oracle will never be happy not kicking people's teeth in until it owns every software language in existence.
Google steals intellectual property from others and claims to represent them in order to gain new customers, particularly liking to bully rivals in poor countries.
Big corporations do a lot of really evil stuff. Taking away the dislike button? Lol. It doesn't rank high on the list. Neither does the silly Google+ thing. The thing is though most of those complaining probably haven't been on the receiving end of mass dislike abuse. As someone who works in web development and has worked on user created content platforms that have had likes and dislikes you do see a point where dislikes reach a critical mass and it basically makes it a call to action for users be it because people think its funny to join in or because that human nature of wanting to be in the in crowd kicks in. As such its not that hard for bad actors to start such an attack with a little bit of co-ordination. And fairly often as you have no actual context for dislikes these can be even more damaging mentally for people, with comments you can at least get an idea as they can explain themselves, is it constructive criticism about the video or is it trolls, you can see and choose to dismiss the idiots and use the constructive ones to improve but a dislike you don't really know what and many people go to the worst case that people just hated it. And even if as some people want to claim that its about the big brands you have to remember there is still an actual person at the other end, often a junior who isn't that well paid but whose job can actually depend on the engagement figures so if they are being bombard by the extremist idiots looking to abuse internet features to push their extreme agendas and stop any discourse around their extreme stance that's a lot of stress on someone who has nothing to do with the reason the abuse is happening.
As users we actually need to stop complaining about the platforms removing features that they originally had with good intentions but were hijacked to be used for bad and instead we need to actually goto war with the petty extremists groups on both far ends because as long as they use features designed for good as weapons to harass people we are just going to see more and more nice features we have been given being removed because if they don't they get criticised for not doing anything to protect users being harassed

Comments can be moderated, dislikes can’t be. That was the one advantage we had over crap videos and it’s gone. You will tend to think as (one of) the first comments you read. That's why you can buy comments, and it's widely used in news sites. That's part of why google decided to control what you see in the comment sections, instead of being transparent. And while the algorithm for sure isn't perfect, it's a good effort and a fitting compromise for this kind of problem. UA-cam could do similar things by for example showing the average watchtime of viewers who liked and disliked (so you can see 10m vs. 2s), showing a visual timeline or showing a warning if the numbers are abnormal for the video (or the creator). While I still wouldn't claim it as perfect, I believe Steam's way of handling this kind of situation was far more nuanced and considerate of the larger picture. Instead of taking away _any_ information from the public eye, Valve added _more_ data by providing historical data of their game's recommendation ratios so that you *as the user* can have the tools you need to identify whether or not a game was review bombed (for any reason, good or bad) or simply disliked over time for being mediocre at best. And on top of that, if Valve decides to regress or delete the weight of a review bombing due to a malicious practice, you _get to see that and why they did it._ It's still perhaps not the perfect solution, but I genuinely believe it's a far better one than UA-cam's current approach.

Literally all they had to do was give creators the option to disable the dislike counter on videos individually or by default.
The fact they chose to force it on the entire platform despite the massive negative feedback prior to it going live feels much more like they just want to minimize criticism of themselves and their corporate partners.

Just giving individual creators the ability to enable/disable dislikes doesn't solve the whole problem. A lot of the benefit of dislikes is steering viewers away from bad, including malicious, content. If a creator is up to no good, or perhaps is just frustrated that their videos are getting dislikes, they'll simply disable dislikes on their channel. Perhaps the more savvy could come to view hidden dislikes as equivalent to massive dislikes, but it's not going to protect the more vulnerable users.

the wont do a poll like that, because creators would mostly choose to return it, as would users.
outside hard left/right extremists who cant deal with people not agreeing with and supporting them... the majority of people...including a few creators i know personally, want it back...
one of them intentionally makes a video a month thats designed to get ratioed, most of his viewers get the joke and dislike as expected, because, they get the fucking joke... unlike so many of these...mostly leftists, who lack a sense of humor and lack the ability to find intentionally offensive things, funny...
its like that ONE GUY who HATES blazing saddles because its "Soooo racist"...not getting the joke...but finding the whole thing offensive... (best part of that one... my exp its mostly been millennials white ones, who get offended... often as they sit next to black/brown people who are laughing their arses off..
i watched one lose her shit at her black friend, "how can you find this oppressive racist shit funny, are you some kind of undercover trump supporting white supremacist now?" not kidding... the girl looks at her, and just tells her to shut up, the movies funny and makes fun of racism, the whole things a long running piss-take on racism and ignorance... and how even racists can change for the better...
i cannot remember the exact words but..that was as close as i can get at the moment, the black gal had to shut her down 2 more times before she left the room and sulked out on the back porch with her phone till the movie was over... when the other 2 VERY CLEARLY BLACK people asked what her problem was, why she kept freaking out over such a classic funny movie...well she eventually lost her shit and called them a long screed about them being uncle tom white supremacist yada yada yada "trump nazi"... when both of them smiled and...opened their jack... showing trump meme shirts... she lost her damn mind and started throwing presto logs and them screaming rape... the black friend of hers walks out with a co2 fire extinguisher and just sprays her down, tells her to pull head from rectum, and realize, if they like the movie, she needs to stop being offended on their behalf, that the whole point of the movie was a fucking long running pisstake on racism and ignorance... and thats why they loved it... "didnt you notice the main characters black, and, one of the only people whos even got half a functional brain in the whole movie?" when one of them went and got his backpack....dude has a binder with Clevon (sp?) Little, the black sheriff...that little signed for him when he was young and saw him at a convension, not even one he was signing or appearing at, one he went to for fun... the man genuinely was a..well...genuine dude... the binder i later found out was a custom one his sister had made for him, from the blazing saddles image little signed for her brother, she scanned the image at max resolution (she said it took 3 days to fully scan the picture...this was a while back when scanners used scsi or printer ports... but at work they actually printed a binder cover for him with that on the front and one he had from the same con with the dude who was the sheriff in Dukes of Hazzard, he was there to do a little talk and QnA, i did get to meet him once... dude was funny as hell, and stupidly friendly, he loved that show he was on.. 'i was one of the first black actors to get a regular role of authority, and we always had fun making that show' im sure he enjoyed seeing people claim the show was racist because "omg the car has an evil racist flag on it reeeee" ugg...
anyway...this was, im quite sure, done to protect the white house and some of their major media partiners like, disney im sure dont like seeing their woke trailers getting ratioed to hell and back...
i saw a short one they put up that... i wish i had downloaded, because it got ratioed so hard they pulled it... it was a short video about the live action little mermaid they are working on....where ariel is a kinky haired black girl rather then ginger(im ginger...i find it ironic they keep erasing gingers, in favor of POC, when we are a smaller minority then black americans last i checked...but then, disney has always erased gingers when given the chance... lots of images covering examples... )
i bet we could run the world off of the power that could be generated if we harnessed the power from all the creators who are rolling over in their graves at how much things have been wrecked in such a short time... walt disney alone could probably power the us, canada, mexico and china...with power to spare...:P

I've been using the extension for some time now and can confirm it looks pretty darn close to my recent videos' actual dislikes. Thanks for speaking out against yet another horribly dumb decision by UA-cam. I'm still upset about all the unlisted videos they purged and wish more people talked about that.

Oh, UA-cam absolutely know why they're doing this. I think they saw that the amount of dislike had a very strong relation with users' willingness to watch the ads of the video (becuz they would click off right away after glancing at the dislike).

If you don't already have a multi 100k following to boost your initial launch week viewership, then you're very likely to be burried forever because you don't get filtered in by the algorithm. Getting that early attention clearly pushes videos to the top of all trending lists while small channels just have to fight for grubs.

Any monetized video should have a clear tagged "sponsored by" and non-negotiable like-dislike counter that only YT can remove (so that we know who to blame for real)...creators can censor comments anyway (that seems reasonable). Otherwise, non-monetized videos cannot be "sponsored by any entity-u alone as creator will be responsible for the content" should have both likes-dislikes on perma-OFF and will have a violation reported/strike counter (like a flag on the play for what specifically) with days to take down notice tag (unless edited and re-upped to community compliance) from YT if found in violation of community guidelines.

If they gave a shit about small creators they wouldn't force people to design videos within their awful algorithm, by extension, altering what YOU want to create. Instead you need your thumbnail just right, the length tactically chosen rather than doing what you want. Screaming at people to like comment and subscribe and "smash that bell icon". The list goes on and on and UA-cam enforces that shotgun to the head of every creator on the platform, even the oldies. Really takes the YOU out of UA-cam. It's just GoogleApprovedTube at this point.

What UA-cam actually achieved: Prevent users from knowing if a video is a 15 minute clickbait crap.
I personally believe they did that because judging from the like/dislike ratio and leaving from a video before you watch it is not translating to profit for them. Not being able to judge if a video is good or not before you see it and instead staying to watch and decide for yourself it does translate to money. They don't care if you like a video or not, they just want you to watch it. Simple as that.

Bingo. They are making these changes to satisfy their customers. And believe it or not, it's working! Their customers love the removal of the dislike button (because they asked for it)
It's just that content creators and consumers are not the customers, They are the product.
It's just finally catching up with youtube content creators and consumers, You guys kind of did drink the kool-aid, UA-cam followed the classic corporate gameplan of launching a service that is initially unprofitable, and steadily become the dominant media streaming platform. And then once you are the dominant platform, with competition not physically able to compete with you, You steadily and methodically start cranking up the monetization and control, and you start fucking printing money.
It was never about sharing, it was never about creativity, it was never about giving everyone a voice. It was always about dominating the market, and then opening the floodgates of money. This may be hard to read for those of you who are like really into youtube itself. But you need to hear this.

I believe the true reason is simple. Watch time. If people can gauge a video based on dislike to watch a video or not, it's a problem for UA-cam since they're in the business of people watching ads. Can't watch ads if people don't want to watch videos with dislikes. Their simple solution, remove that public information. I hope they'll revert their decision soon, but I doubt it.

UA-cam likes and dislikes use what we call "basically available", makes use of "eventual consistency" in programmer lingo. What that means is they are fast on both read (someone opens a video and the number is read and written to the page) and write (someone hit the like/dislike button). On the other hand, this basic availability also means they are never accurate nor consistent. IE both the video player and the dashboard numbers are approximations, previously valid states that (most probably) have already changed. The accuracy of these numbers depends on what server you asked, sometimes the dashboard will be more accurate, sometimes the player will be more accurate, very rarely will they represent the real number on any video that's been getting a lot of attention.

The creator of a scam fake youtube tutorial doesn't care if you dislike their video, but I care because I want to know before I commit watching the whole video and wasting my time.

Their stated reason - Dislike Mobs or whatever - doesn't seem that warranted now that I think of it. If they can detect the dislike-mob they can do what they do with fake PPC clicks: remove them from the accounting as spam clicks. After that, the dislike count would go down again. Odd. They could also limit dislikes to 30 per month and 1 per 24 hour sorta thing.

I still do not understand why YT didn't just give the creators the choice to turn it on and off.

UA-cam removing the dislike counter really shows how they actually don't listen to the community most of the time and they just do what they want as a corporation. For example the video that announced that UA-cam was removing the dislike counter had WAY more dislikes than likes, so yeah, UA-cam doesn't really listen, I really hope that they add the dislike counter back because I think there are more advantages to having a dislike counter than disadvantages.....:(

Corporations only care about shareholders, everyone else is just a number in a spreadsheet. Do you care what number 1984 thinks? no, you only care how it fits in the shareholder profit formula

It never had anything to do with protecting "small channels"
It is simply that huge companies did not like it when they were a public punch bag when they did something wrong, like when some studio release a trailer for some shite cash grab film and then publicly get humiliated because the backlash

I think you are right, but it is more than them just being a punching bag:
FIlm company X pays youtube massive money to promote its new movie "Garbage remake of something nostalgic", then gets slammed by all the users and instead of sharing it in a positive sense, now everyone has an easy way to see a negative review from a large sample size. This is an issue for youtube because they were just handed big money to promote it and now their platform is source of negative feedback. This would make Film Company X less likely to spend that money in the future, meaning less $$$ for youtube from promotion.
Edit: Also they've done the same line of changes in the past for advertisers - like the fact that cursing, weapons, explosives (like for chemistry channels), and other stuff has been essentially shadow banned because you will lose monitization. Its not for the users, but for the advertising revenue.
Also the "protecting small channels" thing is the most bs i've heard from youtube on this - if they wanted to do ANYTHING to protect smaller channels they would work on fixing the false copyright strikes that tend to completely disable small channels.

Removing dislike count is like restaurant review site that only display the 5 star reviews. One small place with 50 great reviews and no bad experiences looks worst than one with 100 good reviews and 5000 terrible reviews.

As a software developer always interested in new technologies, I think that the dislike button is the second most useful information on UA-cam apart from the content itself. I'm always browsing through videos about code reviews, old programs, new APIs and concepts I didn't study at school, and the dislike button is the first thing I watch before investing hours into learning something like a new framework or learning about HTTPS communication standards. Moreover, and more importantly, it's dangerous to download and execute an installer from the internet: imagine how dangerous it is to directly run some code you don't really understand because you're trying to learn what effectively does. No, UA-cam really disappointed me here, and I won't be spending any more time on this platform on tutorials, seminars and lessons (aka the majority of my watching time) unless I'm sure I'm studying from a reputable source.
