  • This one absolutely qualifies for The Rouge's Gallery!
Larry Rolla has been there, done that, and most of the time more than once. If you want to talk race fixing back when, and also today, Larry is as good a choice to converse with as you'll find. Larry Rolla was involved and a key player in the past race fixing scandals that reached as far as the prestigious Saratoga meet. Does it still go on? Listen and find out that and more. How was it done, what is the biggest misconception about it, how was 'The Mob" involved and so much more.
Larry joins our own Jonathan Stettin who has a story or two himself. These two make up for a great show you won't want to miss.

What a great interview! Brought back memories of my younger years, in Detroit, harness and thoroughbred racing. Fixes were about who was “ Out”. It wasn’t about who would win or who was “In”; but who was “Out”. Remember going out to one drivers home/farm after the last race because he came in third when he was supposed to be “Out”.
John, loved the shirt story… for me it was Italian knit shirts. Sold them like hot cakes!
    Love PTW.

Mr. Rolla has been on my radar for a couple months now. I have heard some of these stories before watched many videos. They way he feels comfortable with a you and the stories just flow out because most of his interviews are with guys that are only interested in the mob stuff. Larry is a horseman and seems comfortable with someone that is interested in horses and racing.

A hard listen at times, but one of the best episodes of Past The Wire yet. Thanks and appreciation to Larry for his honest truth. Jon, this is not just a compliment but my strong opinion- you are one of the very best people in racing and for racing,we need you, keep up the great work.

I think it's still going on. Bc it doesn't add up on paper.. my dad always said, you can't predict on what an animal will do.. I thought math magically you could get close to it. I mean.. IDK.. does a horse wake up and say " not today y'all im not doing it" and just bucks. Refuses . ?! I have looked at some horses coming out and they have not been happy.. like nope. Like threw a fit. ..

If they have diarrhea, or gas..or constipated.. I'm sure that would effect them.. sometimes I think their bit is not right. Bc they are shaking their head. I wouldn't like that either.. there is a lot of factors. I joined a horse racing club at Churchill Downs. Paid. Went in on a horse and can't get there bc my ex boyfriend totaled my car. I think I made a bad decision doing this bc they are not that friendly.. ugh

Great video…I was directly involved with a fixed race at Yonkers in the early 70’s. 5 horse field…three crooked drivers tried to wire the field and block the two honest drivers. My group knew the fix was in 48 hrs to the race. HY Bernadette was supposed to win, but the 2 honest guys broke quickly and they wired the field. Fans knew the race was corrupt and they started tossing the garbage cans on the track. The judges never showed a replay. Lost thousands on that.

Great show, great guest...he made a comment about this happening in California, would love to hear more on that. I know of one harness case from decades ago at Cal Expo/Sacramento (where there was a prosecution) that sounded very similar in style to some of the examples he gave. The reason it was discovered was that the tri payout was too small and half the mutuel clerks cashed tickets on the race.

Enjoyed the conversation fellas. I was a mutual clerk when in college in the early 90s. I remember a number of times working right outside the OTB manager's office when he would get a phone call minutes before a race. He would come out and bet that horse with authority. It happened about 3 or 4 times when I was working and he won every time. After about 6 months he was moved to another OTB and I cried! Lol
Yeah, I was betting behind him. Momma didn't race no fool!

There are so many places these RICH 1 PERCENT OWNERS COULD DONATE THESE HORSES... I DON'T KNOW ALOT ABOUT THIS STUFF BC I REALLY DIDN'T THINK IT WAS TRUE.. BC IM FROM KY .. AND IN LEXINGTON ALONE.. THE FARMS AND BARNS ARE NICER THAN SOME OF THE POVERTY STRICKEN PLACES IN KY.. THE MAKES NO SENSE TO ME WHY THEY WOULD JUST GET RID. NOT FEED AFTER ITS DAYS ARE UP. I REALLY DON'T KNOW IF I CAN HANDLE THE DETAILS BC I GET PHYSICALLY SICK.. BUT THERE ARE NON PROP IDEAS AND ORGS THAT SOMETHING COULD COME UP WITH. EVEN A GOVERNMENT CONTRACT LIKE WITH VETERANS WITH THE VA. THAT DEALS WITH HUD VASH FOR HOMELESS VETERANS, AND MAKE A RANCH/ COMPOUND/ FARM/ REHAB/ TRAUMA THERAPY PLACE FOR VETERANS THAT PROVIDES PERMANENT HOUSING FOR VETERANS, ON A WORKING FARM, THAT HOUSES RETIRED HORSES. OFCOURSE THERE WOULD NEED TO BE THE VA. HUD. DEPT OF HOUSING.. VOUCHERS FOR VETERANS. HUD VASH.
      DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
      BC OF VETERANS
      DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
VA WOULD CONTACT OUT INDEPENDENT DRS FOR THERAPY ETC
      BUT WOULD NEED LAND GRAND
BUT WHEN VETERANS THAT ARE HOUSED TOGETHER WHO ARE STRUGGLING THEY TEND TO DO BETTER WHEN THEY ARE ON A STRUCTURE LIKE THEY WERE WHEN THEY WERE IN ACTIVE DUTY..
42 VETERANS KILL THEMSELVES A DAY
THERE ARE VETERANS THAT ARE HOMELESS VETERANS THAT ARE IN NEED OF REHABILITATION..
AND THERE ARE HORSES THAT ARE IN NEED OF HOMES..
THERE IS A PROGRAM OUT WEST WITH MUSTANGS
      AND A PRISON..
WHERE PRISONERS BREAK THE HORSES AND GET THEM READY TO ADOPT OUT. AND THE BREAK EACH OTHER
THIS PROGRAM I THINK WOULD HEAL THE VETERAN PROVIDE PURPOSE AND HOME AND CARE AND LOVE FOR THE HORSE.
I THINK ITS A FABULOUS IDEA.
I DON'T HAVE ANY NAMES. CONTACTS.. ETC..

    • @tarakersey6115

This really upsets me..I have been hassled on Twitter so much about this and I told them what do they want. Horses to go extinct? I told them to look up the mustang round up out west. Bc if they don't get adopted out they get put down... I have mixed feelings too. I have been to The KY horse Park and several KY farms and have seen very good nice farms.. and good care .. .. I have never seen an abused horse . It makes me nauseous thinking about it. That's why I don't like Bob Baffert.. sigh..

I definitely could use some inside " tips". BC I have lost a lot in past couple of months. I love this sport. But when I'm stressed out with personal things, and I don't want to think about THOSE issues.. this is a perfect way to occupy your mind and not think about things that you would normally do.. that keep you normally upset.. just family stuff since I got divorced stuff years ago. Stuff with my adult sons that may ex husband has a psychological hold on them and it keeps me very upset.. and worried about my adult sons. Stuff I can't control. But I am a worrier.. and this keeps my mind occupied.. but unfortunately it's has created a lot of damage to.. my own fault, I know you people don't want to hear about my problems.. but I'm basically going to be a grandma. The granddaughter is due any day now.. however... my ex husband has started drama with my daughter in law, her mom.. and over a year now she just Ghosted me.. for no reason. And my son is a Marine. At CL in N C .. it was when he was deployed.. it's been almost 2 years.. it was around July 4 and I got a text wishing me A Happy 4th. My youngest son told me they were getting evicted. While he was deployed.. and that's illegal both federal and state. Active military have Protection. So I texted her.. got ahold of him.. saying hey. She just needs to go to the courthouse to file a paperwork with the clerk.. I looked up the exact form sent it to both my daughter in law and son when he was overseas.. and said " Hey you don't have to move right now. Legally the judge can put this on hold until you get home. He was still going to be gone another 6 months..".. She refused to acknowledge my texts. Calls.. I explained everything to my son thinking he would be relieved. I wasn't rude. Just very fact based. Maybe several texts bc they included alot of information. I explained everything. I told her I would drive there, I have in Savannah GA.. go to NC. And go to the court house and do it with her. Just hang on. Bc they get a housing allowance.. and if they live off base.. say their allowance is 1200.. I'm not sure exactly. But they find rental for $800.. they get to keep the extra $400 in pocket. On base housing.. That $1200 goes directly to housing. And most military service families when they start out and they live on base can barely afford groceries bc of the low income and they well some qualify for food stamps. But that $1200 for housing is counted as income even though they don't see it , it's taken but taxed.. and counted.. so I was trying to help them save their house . Bc their landlord was a veteran.. they had a lease.. and they were getting screwed. I think something happened.. with my son being deployed.. not my business.. but my intentions were only trying to help them from not losing money.. and that veteran knew better. My daughter in law called my ex husband. The Brains of Nothing. Even though educated. And he doesn't care if my son loses money. He makes 6 figures a year. He actually charged them for his time.. he to is a airforce veteran. So he is a hero and I'm the bad guy. Buy trying to help.. he makes up lies about me to my daughter in law. That's when this started when they had time alone. He is a diagnosed narcissist. He has actually accused me of things that are about him. I have never spoken badly about his Dad to my boys . It's not appropriate.. Anyway.. I'm sorry I have rambled on.. I normally have very good self control with betting.. but this past summer with my son's has been very hard. And I have not gotten to see my son.. I have literally begged him for me to come there. I have apologized for over stepping boundaries if that is what I did but I can't even get an answer. She refuses to speak to me and his phone calls have been less frequent.. her mom contacted me and threatened me and none of it makes sense bc I don't see them.. talk to them. I sent baby gifts.. and I'm utterly confused and hurt and would have never imagined I would have never not get to see my first grandchild.. especially if being a girl.. so instead of crying almost every day I get into horse racing just to forget about this stuff.. bc it's torture..
I Don't want any pity I don't want that.. I just wanted to explain why I have gotten myself in this mess right now. Bc my granddaughter is due, could have been born
. And I was warned that when I left my ex.. he would make my life miserable.. and he has.. doing everything he can through my boys to hurt me... he took everything.. divorce was served in the paper.. he is a liar. And I haven't reacted to him.. anyway that's enough. Sorry you can delete this if you want... I just didn't want people to think I'm irresponsible all of the time.. it's helped me cope right now.. but I'm in a pickle.. but I'll be all right.. love your show... sincerely..

That was an interesting and informative discussion Jon, good job. I'm very much looking forward to the follow up episode with Larry/Hammer. Regarding Mike Hole, he was either the leading or certainly 2nd in the jock standings at Suffolk Downs in the late 60's. That continued success prompted taking his tack to NY, where he sadly died. From what I've read, I agree with your assessment as to how it happened. His son Taylor, as you're probably aware also became a jockey, not sure if he's still riding.

I also think had Larry got his stall's and a fare shake at Yonkers the first time and the bigger track's the first time I don't think he woud have gotten involved in fixing also I think had he not made his first football and basketball bet and just stuck with the horse's he wouldn't have gone down the fixing path or not nearly as bad .
I tho do think he went down a beeter path for his mother's sake vs being in and out of jail and robing gas stations and semi trucks of there whiskey..

But everyone would hear him as soon as I put him in a crate under my seat.. makes no sense. They need adult size crates for unmanageable adults who need a time out.. preferably a sound proof one.. who wants to ruin everyone else's flight.. drives me nuts. Being able to “rat” on the bad actors is necessary to stop the horrors horses endure. What still happens to horses now? I remember the horses that have dropped dead of cardiac arrest in the last few years and can only think of EPO. I found two articles on it in Paulick Report, one from 2015; one from 2019. I fear 2024 is no different as the problems in detecting the blood doping still exist.

He knows me well. He was the head of mutuals at Calder when I was betting big back in the day. Also knew him when he went to NYRA. My brother was still a mutual clerk at that time and we have different last names. When he found out he went to my brother and said hello. Very nice guy. Always took good care of me.

Larry fixed the Belmont Stakes. That's why Sierra Leone got bumped and was too far back with too much to do. Sierra Leone should be banned from horse racing because he can't run straight.

I think some races are still being fixed without the Mob. Any comments anyone? I have had a sneaking suspicion for a long time bc of the handicap. Irad Ortiz is my favorite Jockey, he has been on the favorite, and I have watched him in some races, where to me, it literally looks like he holds back on the horse.. verses his normal aggressive riding. It doesn't add up on paper with the Horse, and it doesn't add up for Irad. I honestly think that the Jockeys have a secret little inside deal and they decide who is going to win on SOME races. Bc these Jockeys from what I understand, do not have a retirement plan, a union.. etc. And if they God Forbid become become disabled or paralyzed or injured to the point their career is over. They have what,( their winnings to live on forever?!) But I have seen them talk about .. drunk karaoke for a fundraiser for disabled Jockeys.. that's pitiful. A jockey who has sustained a career ending injury, example paralyzed..( God Forbid) that's atleast ( I would estimate ATLEAST 2 million dollars a year in medical expenses with health insurance).. American Health Care System. These Jockeys, Like Ortiz Brothers, Pratt, Franco, Castelleno, Davis, Karmouch, ( I'm sure I have mis spelled their names) but the Big Named Jockeys I'm sure are very wealthy who have won many main races, year after year.. My question is, are they Independent Agents so they can ride for whoever they want? Are their medical expenses, retirement, disability insurance coverage up to them? Are they eligible for disability coverage and life insurance due to their occupation? I don't understand why that these Jockeys from a Union , to have better protection, not just for the main stream jockeys, but all jockeys... the sport would stop until an agreement would be reached. These men deserve protection for their health, their future and their families.. They shouldn't have to spend their winnings of their prime on a possible career ending accident, life changing accident.. They ride these majestic beautiful horses to win, place, and shows, and for people's entertainment worldwide! They deserve protection from The Organization, Owners, and Trainers. That's the way I feel.. As do these horses.. they don't need to be cast out just bc they reach a certain age.. why not donate them to. A facility for therapy for veterans and military, or children, or family therapy... why not and try and get a government contract of some sort to help say, veterans who also need housing and work, and pair them up with horses who are retired who need housing apparently and love apparently.
There is no better animal to fix a person who has been broken, especially their spirit and emotionally. These race horses who did their job who just get kicked out or neglected bc they are too old or whatever the reason is... REALLY BOTHERS ME! WHY not some of these blessed Rich people who have the ability to pay upwards of 9 million to pay for one horse... they can't ( and their rich colleagues) come up with places throughout this country to build a farm, and have staff and have housing for qualified vets to be taught how to take care of these horses?!. That's killing 2 birds with one stone... and this would be a tax write off... for the donation of horses, land, etc... and I know that the Government involved is looking for ideas to house veterans... and veterans who are struggling with PTSD, studies have shown that they do best with other veterans, on a daily schedule, performing tasks... There should not be one homeless veteran in this country. Not one veteran should kill himself daily but the stats show 42/day kill themselves..
Not one horse used for sport, should be neglected, starved, unhoused, abused, just because they no longer meet the need for " sport"..
If could figure out how to put this together I would. If I had money I would do this... Horses save people.. People let's save them.. Let's brainstorm and save them..

I believe with such a large influence of Latin American jockeys, trainers, and backstretch workers today in racing that the cartel has there hand in race fixing and the transportation of illegal drugs that can't be detected in post race drug test. However I wouldn't doubt that the mob still has a hand in it also.

Holy shit what a book you wrote there. 1) there was a fund recently created for disabled riders. 2) of course they still fix races. That's common sense. Mob or no mob. The game has always been dirty. It's easier to fix a thoroughbred race and it's easy to break a trotter, but any race can be fixed.

I have watched it in slow motion.. different angles... bc Irad is known to be aggressive AF .. to where he gets complaints called. We need cameras in the Jockeys room.. Body Cam..etc.. this is bull.. I love horse racing but now I'm getting pissed off... why don't they have independent officials in there..
