Two part answer to the question of whether you were right. Part 1 is you never should have bet the race. You didn’t need the money. Part 2 is pretty clear. You should have gave them up and given them the money. The risk/reward of not giving them up was too much and you had the ability to make it up to them by lining their pockets. As a younger man I'd have said you were right, not knowing yet how life really works. As an older man (in my 50s) I'd say give them up. They were going nowhere anyway and it was really all their fault to begin with. The way the majority of people are, they would have rolled over on you for much less.

Stuey Ungar did not come from Harlem, he was from The Lower East Side. I met him back in the 70's, he was not a great gin player at age 10, that's. myth. He became the best in the 80's, no disputing it. The story about him and Spilatro is also fake, these guys are taking the story of Ungar running out of New York in the 1970's after getting jammed up and changing it to a Vegas story a decade later involving Spilatro. I guess getting Spilatro's name into a story will help him push his book. What a load of crap this video is.

No I never met Jon Roberts. He did own a few thoroughbreds that raced in Florida, but his main thing was drugs.
