- In this video, we're taking on the challenging task of rebuilding a Ford Transit Connect 1.5 TDCi engine after a catastrophic timing belt failure that resulted in a smashed head. We'll take you through the process step-by-step, from diagnosing the issue to the final reassembly of the engine.
One of the biggest obstacles we encountered during this repair was the fact that 8 out of the 10 head bolts snapped off, requiring us to drill them out. We'll show you how we tackled this difficult problem and provide some tips and tricks for dealing with broken bolts.
Throughout the video, we'll provide insightful commentary on the entire process and highlight key steps that are important to get right. We'll also share some best practices for preventing future timing belt failures and head damage.
If you're a Ford Transit Connect owner or just a car enthusiast looking to learn more about engine repair, this video is a must-watch. Don't forget to use the following #tags when sharing this video on social media: #FordTransitConnect #EngineRepair #BrokenBolts #TimingBeltFailure #HeadRebuild.

Thank you so much for posting this video, we were stuck doing our cam belt change and lost the timing. It showed us where the correct locations for the crank dowel that we were struggling to find. ❤
Hey 👋 thanks for watching! I’m glad it helped you out and I hope your back on the road now😊
new camshaft and rockers, new belt and away you go. done quite a few now.
Yes mate normally, but this one was a bit worse for wear ! Runs like a dream now tho !
Nearly in tears over that head bolt 😂😂😂😂
I don’t think they are all that bad will I hope not lol 😂
I recon head didn't have come off done thew theses new cam shaft rockers lifters belt kit been fine 👍
Hi Yh I did think that at first too but when I had the head at the machine shop they confirmed 6 out the 8 valves were bent, as you will see in the next video 😁.
This type of model is very good. The problem with the car that you show in the video is that the owner of the car did not follow all services here, or was careless with the car. It is clearly seen that the car has been driven a lot on salted roads, and it has not been underwashed. I would also think that the person in question has been careless with the oil change and has not bothered to change the timing belt. Then things must go wrong in the end, no matter what kind of car it is that has a belt drive.
Hey yes I would agree if you take good care of your car it could last a lot longer, but this work van is exactly that just a work horse and this happened. you never can tell what will break and when no matter how much you look after it. But that’s life 😊 thanks for watching 👍
Yes I know about the wet belt systems on the ecoboost engines, they are the ones I have to watch out for as they will go wrong if you don’t service them regularly! 👍
Mate this has literally just happened to my van!
Oh savage mate!!! Hope you get it sorted out, let me know what you get done 👍
Ford should be brought to account for the head bolts stripping its ridiculous.
Ford would just laugh but it’s all good problem solved now and running well 👍
Got exact same problem
Hey 👋 oh no sorry to hear your having the same problem, please keep us updated on your progress 👍
Excellent vid, cheers mate
Thanks I really appreciate it 👍
Just had this happen today on a mondeo 😫😫
Oh dear sorry to hear that ! Hope you can get it sorted without any problems 👍
Ford love a stripped cambelt. Had 3 2.0l customs strip a belt and 1 connect. Should of stuck to chains
Yup I agree with you on that one ☝️
I've got a 2006 connect 1.8. Come off the motorway and it died at the lights. Started again then moved 20 meters then died again, it did that 3 times now wont start. Cambelt?
Normally if the cam belt is gone you wouldn’t get it to start up again at all, if you managed to start it 3 times and move the van it sounds like you have a different fault, sounds more fuel related, possible fuel filter issue ? Let me know what you find out👍
@@MrAutoFixer cheers pal I will. That's what I thought at first but I've got other people throwing their 2 cents in now I've got a twitchy bum, fingers crossed I just have worms haha. But the engine does seem to spin faster when cranking which also made me think it was belt 🤷
@chrisr525 oh dear, obviously the best thing would be to have it looked at, but fingers crossed 🤞 it’s nothing too bad
Just been told by my mechanic that my Ford Tourneo Connect has this issue, the cambelt breaking up in sump. Looks like a similar issue here. The car has been guzzling a fair amount of coolant. Been serviced regularly before I bought it a few months ago. As soon as I heard the engine making a bit of noise (loud clicking) I took it in. Any idea what I am in for with engine sound, coolant guzzling and belt looking worn? Hopefully just a replacement of the belt? Dreading the assessment.
Hi it’s really hard to say without looking, using coolant is not a good sign as the belt wear wouldn’t cause that issue maybe head gasket ?
I'll pop you a response when I find out later this week. Thanks for video. I forwarded it to my mechanic 😂
@JennaHills hey 👋 love that, I hope he appreciates it 😂 yes please let me know how you get on 👍
Prevention is better than cure change the your belts on time or sooner inc oil/filters
Yes I defo agree routine maintenance is a must !
Idk what that is but the 2017 Transit connect i have is chain not belt.
This is also a 2017 you must have a different engine fitted in your van compared to this one ☝️
Hi! Now I going to buy 1.5 tdci , but 2021 Tourneo Connect. Do you have any bad experiens too?
Yes they are good but just make sure it’s got good history and if it’s had a cambelt if the milage is high 👍
@@MrAutoFixer thank you!
@@MrAutoFixerits mean the 2021 engine coming with same problems?😮
How mony Km was in this car? 1.5 tdci?
Yes 1.5 and had done 98k miles
what brand belt was that ?
The belt was original Ford one
Hi mate, I have a 2008 connect 1.8tdci, been told it has 2 belts, 1 at the top and either a chain or wet belt at the bottom, could you tell me which is on these engines? Thanks
Hey I would need to know the reg to look it up as some have a injection pump chain and some have a belt. 👍
Hi I’ve just looked it up and it gives the option for both belt or chain so I would say you need to have a look and see what one it is, it’s the same amount of work for either one, if you really want to know before starting the job just give Ford a call and ask the parts department. Hope that helps 👍
@@MrAutoFixer Cool thanks for your time
@luke9049 you are very welcome
🤗
if you unscrew the wet belt/chain tensioner and its convex at the end, you have a chain. I believe 2008 may have been the change over from chain to wet belt. hope this helps.
How many miles had the van done, was the csmbelt change overdue??
It was on 98k and it had a belt at 70k and was serviced regularly too, was just unlucky I think. 👍
@@MrAutoFixer hopefully I've just bought a 60000 mile 2018 connect limited for a excruciating amount of Dosh 😂
@paulrollings1274 Yh I bet it was! But hopfully that means it’s a good one🤞
@@MrAutoFixer That doesn't sound right. I'm pretty sure the owner of the car has been careless in every way. The reason for such accidents is that the owner did not want to change the belt or/and treated the car very badly. Moreover, the interval on this model is 160,0000 km. I understand that you/you want attention and advertising, but be honest and tell it like it is. this type of model has few problems. Have the same type of 2017 model, and never any major problems. Very sad that you only focus on the negative things. You focus on mistakes that come from bad car owners who shouldn't have had a car.
I know the owner so know the van very well and it’s history! I’ve seen this fault a lot and it’s very common, a poorly made cam. If you did your research you would know this. 👍
Crikey.Just had an EGR valve replaced alone on same engine, 2016 ,56000 miles. That was a small fortune. Dreading this if my cambelt fails.
Hey 👋 I don’t blame you, if you are worried you could just have the cam changed when you next have the cambelt changed. That way you will have peace of mind 👍
What model year is this? 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder?
The interval on mine: "Ford Connect 2017 mod. 200L1 - 1.5 - 4 cyl - TDCi Trend" is 240,0000 km. reg belt on mine does NOT go in the oil. The biggest problem with these cars is: 3 cylinder / belt drive. These cars are constructed incorrectly from the factory. "Belt in oil" This means that the belt crumbles in hot oil and clogs oil channels. That means total engine failure. Selling these cars should be banned. It does not only apply to some types of Connect. This also applies to other brands. Especially Peugeot.
It’s a 2017 and a 4 cylinder 👍
Yes the wet belt ones are becoming a bit of a known issue now, I have a video on a Citroen with a welt belt that’s clogged up the oil pickup pipe.
That’s what’s happen when here tightening and also using the same head bolts again
That van was like that from factory it had never had the head off before. 👍
Hi where are you based
Based in Essex 👍
Based in Essex 👍
Chuck away engines ! All well and good doing that but can get bottom end issues , small end etc🙈
Sounds like you have had a bad experience with these 👍
Plastic sump WTF ford
Not the best but probably a lot cheaper to produce
So, no need to remove the head .
In this case there was a need to remove the head, check out the part 2 video 👍 thanks 😊
There's a modified fuel pump sprocket on the 1.5 doesn't affect 1.6
