Chris. You are literally the biggest inspiration to me as a beginning woodworker. I am 16 and I am amazed at how innovative you are. All the sketches and designs are so impressive and it seems like you have a vision that just comes to you and it always ends up looking incredible. As I develop my website and skills, I always look to you first. Your website is so clean and professional looking and when I make mine, I hope it looks even close to as good as yours. Did you work as an architect or with interior design in some way before fully switching to woodworking? It seems like you always have a new idea on how to do something better or put your own spin on it. Is it a creative process or does it just come to you? In a way it’s almost discouraging because your designs always look so modern and sleek and I don’t have ideas that look that cool. I also don’t have the equipment to produce what I draw most of the time. If you could offer any advice or maybe do a video on how you think of or create designs, it would be appreciated more than you could ever know. Or something relating to midcentury-modern Vs. modern Vs. farmhouse modern, as I am struggling to wrap my head around the nuances of what makes furniture fit into a style. Do you start by saying you want to make a “midcentury modern” item and then design it? Or do you design it first and classify it later. Thank you so so so much for (hopefully) reading this, and maybe even responding.
Hey Josh, thanks for the kind words. As for your questions, I worked as a graphic designer prior. No architecture, or furniture design background. Actually not even any woodworking or "handy" background. I'm actually an extremely "un-handy" person I'd say. The best advice i can give for designing is not to wait for inspiration. Most of the time, I just start drawing out ideas, and I'm not particularly into it. Then eventually something will ignite a spark, and I'll go down that path. I don't try to classify a style first. Most of my stuff ends up modern or mid century modern. But just because that's the style I like and where my sensibilities naturally go. Don't over think it. Just draw what you can for now, and see where it leads you. You'll stumble upon something :)
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
I think it's awesome that you provide so many options with these plans. Gives somebody the opportunity to really customize for their own needs and tools. Thanks for sharing!
I did a cabinet makers course in 1994 as part of my resettlement from the army and have worked as a carpenter ever since. I have made many many stools and have repaired many many chairs but still have never made a chair from scratch. You are right it is very scary. Lately I have been designing a chair as I need a set for my dining table, time to man-up and make a chair finally.
Good call...I think we're meant to struggle through a few before it becomes second nature. That's why I built three for this one, all slightly different. Had to dial things in.
I make lowback maloof dining chairs by hand and they are beautiful and comfortable. I made my own templates, modified them, and now make the legs and arms from 1 piece of mahogany 22" wide. You guys can do it!

Lovely piece of furniture as always. However, we have dining chairs where the rear legs stick out like yours. The number of times we and visitors have tripped over those legs is legion. The brain sees the back of the chair but doesn't expect the legs to stick out that far. Something to consider for future projects.

Great work again Chris, I really love your plans. Do you have any advice, on where I can learn to build more complex chairs? I would love to build a Hans Wegner Chair (e.g. Wishbone), but I wasn't able find any information in the web... Maybe you have advice?
How well do your beats block out shop sounds. Looking at upgrading my hearing protection and combining them with headphones instead of running them separately like I currently do.
Another option for the seat is to use a flat panel but eat a lot of carbs until you gain a lot of blubber to cushion your seat. I don't need none of the smelly stuff. Cleaning does it for me. I would also splay the legs out to give more stability
Always love your videos! Such high quality and attention to detail, both in editing and of course - in the furniture. I'm a sucker for a good chair and I'd be happy to sit my butt in this one any day 😄

I like this design. I’ve been thinking about another one I’ve seen on YT before but can’t seem to find it. Anyone know the name of the channel of the guy who designed his own chair?
