    this is such a brilliant scene. totally perfect drugged-out-of-your-mind conversation.
    "we are all waaaay too close to this."
    downey is beyond perfection in this role.

    I remember the first time I saw this movie I was too blasted to understand that 3 gears * 6 gears = 18 permutations = 18 speeds. Just like the characters in the movie.

  • @raouldukey8
    @raouldukey8 11 років тому +27

    in the book it explains that they can't figure out the right amount of gears because the two sides of their brains have lost the ability to communicate with themselves. this scene shows that theyre all paranoid and are quick to judge people as thieves and hustlers, also showing how untrustworthy the society they live in is

    I love this film. This is the second best scene in the film. The best is when they get back and think someone has been in. I love the book as well, Phillip K. Dick, a great author of our time.

    For those that don't know:
    It's really an 18 speed bike. You don't add the 6 and 3, you multiply them.

    I absolutely love this film and novel, and all of the other Philip K Dick books.
    Its both hilarious and disturbing to see them all banter back and forth with ridiculously complex conspiracy theories and extreme paranoia brought on by the effect of Substance D. Philip K Dick is a master writer.

    I just checked with my bike-geek partner. He says that, while he had an 18-speed in 1975, they were very uncommon then and likely still were uncommon in 1977 when the book was published. Nowadays, a 10-speed would be an oddity.

    • @shadowwound
      @shadowwound 2 роки тому

      The book takes place in 1994. Maybe he felt itd be more common then. And the movie takes place "7 years from now" no real date to it.

  • @Liberty4Ever
    @Liberty4Ever 16 років тому

    In the book, copyright 1977, the bike was a 10 speed, which they thought was a seven speed because it had two gears in the front and five in the back.
    And the albino shapeshifting lizard bitches were, well, the exact opposite.
    But this is a great scene. I gotta see this movie.
    I've been a Phillip K. Dick fan since I started reading his stuff in the mid-70s. He's gained a huge posthumous appreciation for his work - Blade Runner, Minority Report, etc.

    @WadeLogan Yeah. very much like fear and lothing in las vegas. only certain people will get it, and the film is not for eveyone. I watched Fear and loathing with a friend, and when it was all over, i dug it, but my friend shouted "what the hell did i just watch." lol.

    err i might be wrong, but dont you count it in times, not plus, as in, 6 times 3 (=18) in other words u get 3 variations of each of the 6 gears at the back from the ones on the front. Thats 18, it was correct.
