this is such a brilliant scene. totally perfect drugged-out-of-your-mind conversation. "we are all waaaay too close to this." downey is beyond perfection in this role.
I remember the first time I saw this movie I was too blasted to understand that 3 gears * 6 gears = 18 permutations = 18 speeds. Just like the characters in the movie.
in the book it explains that they can't figure out the right amount of gears because the two sides of their brains have lost the ability to communicate with themselves. this scene shows that theyre all paranoid and are quick to judge people as thieves and hustlers, also showing how untrustworthy the society they live in is
I love this film. This is the second best scene in the film. The best is when they get back and think someone has been in. I love the book as well, Phillip K. Dick, a great author of our time.
I absolutely love this film and novel, and all of the other Philip K Dick books. Its both hilarious and disturbing to see them all banter back and forth with ridiculously complex conspiracy theories and extreme paranoia brought on by the effect of Substance D. Philip K Dick is a master writer.
I just checked with my bike-geek partner. He says that, while he had an 18-speed in 1975, they were very uncommon then and likely still were uncommon in 1977 when the book was published. Nowadays, a 10-speed would be an oddity.
In the book, copyright 1977, the bike was a 10 speed, which they thought was a seven speed because it had two gears in the front and five in the back. And the albino shapeshifting lizard bitches were, well, the exact opposite. But this is a great scene. I gotta see this movie. I've been a Phillip K. Dick fan since I started reading his stuff in the mid-70s. He's gained a huge posthumous appreciation for his work - Blade Runner, Minority Report, etc.
If you mean in the trailer, it is Teen Angst by M83. On this scene though, fantastic. There are so many individual scenes in this film that are brilliant.
I always find it kinda amusing in the book that he could imagine the scramble suits and holo-scanners... but they're still playing music off 8-track tapes and cassettes :)
I was only commenting about the updates for a modern audience. It wasn't a criticism. I was sleeping just fine, but now I can't sleep because I'm worried that you don't like me.
Having read the book, I don't think I'd call it futuristic (except for the "scramble suits'). Dick wasn't real about the future - he was about alternatives, none of them particularly nice.
My other favorite comedic scene in Scanner Darkly is for sure when Robert is arguing with Woody outside. "Shut the fuck up." "No why don't you-" "SHUTTHEFUCKUP"
freck is supposed to be in this scene, and the bike is supposed to be 20 bucks not 50 lol and a 10 speed not 18. they changed the story sooo much when they turned it into a movie
Want to read this book.. This movie is incredible and you feel so bad for Archur at the end of the film but there is a message here of what can happen to anyone when they fool around with any type of drug.
@astrophonix It is six back gears times 3 front gears to get the 18 speed. I am guessing he saw two the second time because the substance D was messing with his vision.
@WadeLogan Yeah. very much like fear and lothing in las vegas. only certain people will get it, and the film is not for eveyone. I watched Fear and loathing with a friend, and when it was all over, i dug it, but my friend shouted "what the hell did i just watch." lol. I havn't really seen a scanner darkly, but now I'm putting it in my netfix cue.
Shame they left out the next scene in the novel where a random guy in the street tells them it's two times nine equals sixteen gears, not two plus nine.
If i remember correctly last night when i was watching this movie these "druggies" are taking a fictional drug, whether or not they are trying to show the audience how hard drugs can effect your life and make you act or just showing what that fictional drug can do to you..i don't know.
@theCraynzz Perhaps the clip would give you some insight into the mindset of people utterly high, allow you to see how their minds would actually work?
RD Jr's logc regarding the addition of the gear remind me of modern gaming practice from various big company. Adding Dlc on the day of reelease or several day after that should clearly have been included in the original game
err i might be wrong, but dont you count it in times, not plus, as in, 6 times 3 (=18) in other words u get 3 variations of each of the 6 gears at the back from the ones on the front. Thats 18, it was correct.
this is such a brilliant scene. totally perfect drugged-out-of-your-mind conversation.
"we are all waaaay too close to this."
downey is beyond perfection in this role.

One of my favorite scenes. EVER. Such an epic cast
If you've ever hung out with addicts... this is really how they talk
"What do you think happened to the missing gears?"
Keanu Reeves
Lol
For those that don't know:
It's really an 18 speed bike. You don't add the 6 and 3, you multiply them.
this is fucking amazing. "oh my god, theres no telling what elsse they've done"
I absolutely love this film and novel, and all of the other Philip K Dick books.
Its both hilarious and disturbing to see them all banter back and forth with ridiculously complex conspiracy theories and extreme paranoia brought on by the effect of Substance D. Philip K Dick is a master writer.
Total total total totaly total, total providence XD hahaha.
Albino Shape-Shifting Lizard BITCHES!"
LOL one of the best lines in the movie including
"Lets Go Rescue The Orphaned Gears DUDE!!!"
I read the book before watching this movie. This scene is one of my favorites from both.
I'm reading this book for my philosophy class and I appreciate your analysis of the animation! :-)
“Those albino, shape shifting lizard bitches!” Bahahaha 😂🤣😂🤣. RDJ is the best!
I just checked with my bike-geek partner. He says that, while he had an 18-speed in 1975, they were very uncommon then and likely still were uncommon in 1977 when the book was published. Nowadays, a 10-speed would be an oddity.
The book takes place in 1994. Maybe he felt itd be more common then. And the movie takes place "7 years from now" no real date to it.
Really good movie. Way under rated, such a cool movie to watch while high.
LOL!
Downey Jr. and Harrelson are such convincing stoners. I can't imagine how they understand the drug scene so well. ;-)
my favorite scene
One of the best damn movies EVER!
so....what happened to the pants he was wearing before he got the yellow ones?
I think it's brilliant to have actors with known drug histories involved in this movie and the rotoscopy is beautiful. :)
Thank you, this is probably my favorite scene.
Hahaha, I just bought a bike from a guy on the street, and I walked in with it and went "Total, total total totally total providence!"
He's gained a huge posthumous appreciation for his work - Blade Runner, Minority Report, etc.
this movie was awesome. the script is almost as if Quintin Tarrantino wrote it cuz the dialogue is amazing as well as the visuals
total! total!
fantastic!!
brilliant!!
Barris definitely makes this film. RDJ is captivating.
i was trippin on shrooms when i saw this movie rofl good times
One of the funniest scenes in anything.
If you mean in the trailer, it is Teen Angst by M83. On this scene though, fantastic. There are so many individual scenes in this film that are brilliant.
In the book it's Freck who counts less, and they show the bike to a black teenager and he tells them how to do the math
Love this movie. Hilarious/fairly accurate portrayal of drug behavior/thought.
6 X 3 = 18 speed.
^ Sums up the whole film, good film but it does not justify how amazingly awesome the book is.
👀"We are all waaaaay too close to this"
He got greeked!
Bon sang je viens de découvrir ce film, oui je sais je suis à la bourre... C'est de la bombe!!!
And yet in many ways it's exactly the same. Great movie, even better book.
The whole movie was about these peoples' lives. This scene showcases that.
Magic scene!
That's cool. I wish I had time to read the book, it was a very intriguing movie.
Do you know what really grinds my gears?
fucking genius favorite movie of all time
This is my first my time watching a scene from this movie. It feels like I just smoked weed or something and looking at a grand theft auto cover art..
AMAZING MOVIE!!! The graphics make me remember of GTA, hehehe... I've gotta say that Waking life is better, though.
This movie was very hard to understand, but I liked this scene, and a few others.
haha so true, releasing DLC on day 1 is daylight robbery.
Let's go rescue the orphan gears dude!
haha of course a Ron Paul fan would love Scanner Darkly
It's amazing what you can get for $50. I'll give you 60. LOL
Whole scene is greatest example of stoner logic
This looks like an awesome movie
I just read the book, quite funny and accurate.
downey nailed this role.
@Tacoinmysoup also, this is NOT an 18 speed bike, as there are only 2 front chain rings. 2x6=12
RDJ is even sexy rotoscoped! I love this scene...
Having read the book, I don't think I'd call it futuristic (except for the "scramble suits'). Dick wasn't real about the future - he was about alternatives, none of them particularly nice.
My other favorite comedic scene in Scanner Darkly is for sure when Robert is arguing with Woody outside.
"Shut the fuck up."
"No why don't you-"
"SHUTTHEFUCKUP"
freck is supposed to be in this scene, and the bike is supposed to be 20 bucks not 50 lol and a 10 speed not 18. they changed the story sooo much when they turned it into a movie
Let's just rescue the orphaned gears, man!!!!
that's why it's so god-damned funny
Want to read this book.. This movie is incredible and you feel so bad for Archur at the end of the film but there is a message here of what can happen to anyone when they fool around with any type of drug.
@LackingSaint I found this scene hilarious and very true to life. I've met and had conversations with people like this. Conversations about nothing.
@astrophonix It is six back gears times 3 front gears to get the 18 speed. I am guessing he saw two the second time because the substance D was messing with his vision.
Yes.
@Gibson889 Nope, it's sort of implied. In the book the guy just explains it and 'Hank' uses it as an excuse to send 'Fred' for mental examination.
lol I love Barris, Its like they took Walter right out of The Big Lebowski and just jacked him up on speed
I would adopt the orphan gears.
Shame they left out the next scene in the novel where a random guy in the street tells them it's two times nine equals sixteen gears, not two plus nine.
Yeah, these are druggies talking. What a great conversation lol. Sounds like my friends and I.
yup, that she is.
cool scene.. it's even weirder and more complex in the book, trippiest thing I've ever read. Phil K Dick
If i remember correctly last night when i was watching this movie these "druggies" are taking a fictional drug, whether or not they are trying to show the audience how hard drugs can effect your life and make you act or just showing what that fictional drug can do to you..i don't know.

My teacher showed us this clip in class today.
@Tacoinmysoup That is why fixies are so popular. Stoners hate math.
total total totally total total TOTAL Providence!
we are all way too close to this-
Man I get paranoid just watching this.
fuckin awesome movie- watched it like ten times... downey's great-
hahahahahaha "i just got Greek'd!"
yep
In the book it had 10 speeds, 5 and 2.
maybe he just has a sense of humor
It has 18 speed, because it isn't 6+3, it's 6x3.
Yeah, I was saying that sarcastically, hence the wink.
@grimmpoe if it was anything like most of the rest of the film, he wasnt wearing any :P
Richard Linklater, ftw.
I thought Barris would be smart enough to figure out that 3 x 6 = 18.
DON'T RIDE YOUR BIKE INDOORS
I WILL FIND OUT IMMEDIATELY
there was nothin wrong with the update man
@theCraynzz you have a typo there, you should have said "High people" instead of idiots
To get "ripped off", or "gypped".
