i come back to this scene way too often. Poor bob couldn’t even separate his fake identity from his actual one by the end of the story.

This is the most heart wretching beautiful monologue I've ever read in the book or seen acted. This is perfect, and it fills me with a euphoria. If people wtach this properly, they will feel the same.

This is my favorite scene in one of the most original movies ever made. I love the way the scene transitions. It's equally impressive in the book. Some people don't like Keanu Reeves, but he is perfect for this part.

Every time I see this I am brought back into a darker time of my life and brought nearly to tears. I have moved on in my life but few movies or novels touched me so personally as this one.

I was familiar with Philip K. Dick's fiction before seeing this movie, but I was still blown away when I first saw this. I immediately bought a second ticket to watch it again. It made me want to explore PKD in even greater depth.

I know Bob Arctor... He’s a good person, he’s up to nothing... At least nothing too bad

This scene is so hard to understand if you're seeing the movie for the first time and can't consider the fact that he really doesn't get it

Exactly, I haven’t seen the movie in years and I forgot he’s talking about himself all thru this scene.

an amazing film and a great scene. The character of Bob Arctor is just so brilliant for a number of reasons; but most of all his pitiable confusion, and his genuine belief that he is carrying out justice in subjecting himself to the scanners, to this life that he so clearly hates. It's so sad to see his slow demise, brought on without his knowledge or consent. The self-awareness is all too brief, but so haunting.

PKD was 42 when his wife left him and he ended up alone with his speed addiction in an empty 4 bedroom house at 707 Hacienda Way in Santa Venetia, CA. He invited in all his teenaged and twenty-something drug buddies just to fill the space.
So I'd imagine the ugliness of Arctor probably has something to do with him being twice everyone else's age.

Kafka's little story "Conversation with the Supplicant" captures this kaliedo-sense a century sooner.
    K. Dick and Joseph K. were roto-blood brothers.

Incredible movie probably before its time
and you can't but feel sorry for Archer at the end of the film. Wonderful performance by the entire cast. What does the scanner see into the head or into the heart? Clearly or Darkly?

After reading the book I pictured Bob as what a younger PKD would look like. That being said, a movie is limited to concrete character representations as opposed to a book that leaves at least some flexibility based on the reader. I like the way they represented the characters in this movie though! Keanu has a very dark feel to him that fits perfectly with the world his character lives in, and as far as movie watchers know Bob is a stud and Winona's rejection is explained at the end :P

    • @dfghj241
      @dfghj241 6 років тому

is the ending of the book similar to the one from the movie? even if it is i'm looking forward to reading it, PKD is a fantastic sci fi writer, only really rivaled by Stanislaw Lem imo. there is a similar book by Lem called the futurological Congress, it is a messy translation as usual, but hey, the book is pretty crazy, if anyone is on the vibe of this movie then this book just extends it to the absurdity.

@joejohanssen I think that they knew that his mission was actually to infiltrate the drug facility and therefore if they had that level of clearance they also knew that Donna was a cop and were urging him to bring the blue flowers to the police.

great film, but reading the book first really helped me with it, I know I would've found it hard to grasp otherwise.
For instance: the first scene is underneath incredibly sad, we know as well as Arctor that something terrible is going on in his hemispheres.
I found the St. Paul references in the book quite hard to get. The reflection in the mirror, alternate reality stuff. Maybe I do, but I just don't know it. When he's on a roll, Philip K Dick is da man.

@joejohanssen Because the blue flowers were the whole point of employing him as a NARC. He wasn't supposed to bust Donna or her dealer he was supposed to find the source of the blue flowers which are used to make substance D. And at the end of the movie he does find the source of the blue flowers.

I think this movie wouldve been more successful at the box office if they made it animated only in scenes where the guys are on substance D and show it in real life when the scene is in the point of view of a sober person. Nonetheless I loved this movie it is one of my faves

    Whatever it is that's watching
    It's not human
    It doesn't ever blink.
    What does a scanner see?
Into the head? Down into the heart?
    Does it see into me?
    Into us?
    clearly or darkly?
I hope it sees clearly cause I can no longer see into myself. I see only murk.
I hope for everyone's sake the scanners do better.
Cause if the scanners sees only darkly like I do, then I'm cursed, and cursed again.
I will only wind up dead this way, knowing very little,
    and getting that little fragment
    wrong too

hmm arctur lost touch with life..he's dead..we're all dead...i think its time to go to the woods and sleep and think a little in the dark with the insects and animals. Riyadh is surely inevitable. Now in the ugly world we're living...ugly things happen. H just left. All V are over. Sad life with lots of shit. What are we doing. This must end. I wanna go home. Elevator scene.

Just read the book. Not liking Keanu as Bob Arcter. I picture Bob as older looking, and kind of ugly. Keanu is just too handsome and youthful looking. I don't think his voice or his acting ability either.
