- Here is a clip from the movie "Chaplin" where Charlie is trying to convince his brother and colleague that The Tramp should never speak on screen.
It is the scene where Robert Downey Jr displays his classical ballet training.
Enjoy!
i think this movie shows just how talented Robert is as an actor, he went to great lengths to study every aspect of chaplin's life, Robert even learned how to play Violin left handed....if that is'nt work ethic i don't know what is. Robert is a Genius actor!!
That one move he does at 0:15 is actually pretty hard. My dad was a ballet dancer and he told me that that's not something you learn while working with a personal trainer for an afternoon. From what I understand, Downey does have some ballet training. And it certainly shows.
he studied classical dance as a child at the age of 7
You can tell he's a ballet dancer by the way he walks
I love RDJ.
He's awesome as Charlie, and a wonderful actor!
BRAVO to him!! :)
he is destined to portray chaplin's role..his age (20 plus that time), ballet lessons learned from early life to showcase that 'ballet moves' - btw he copied that from chaplin film's 'the floorwalker', him being innovative and dedicated as he learned the british accent and played violin and tennis using left hand...and so on! indeed great artist and really smart plus his determination to stop /survive from old stuff, be a good husband, and being always hilarious make him more adorable/desirable
I know RDJ is the biggest actor in the world today, but to this day this film showed his genius to the world and this is why he will go down as one of the greatest of all time
Wow he can dance
He studied ballet in England when he was a kid
he actually took classical ballet when he was 10
God I love RDJ. Those pants just make him jump sooo high. lol. Nah, seriously. He's great, that dance training comes in handy.
He just did like...a bazillion changements!!! 0_0 what CAN'T this guy do?!
He got nomanted with and Oscar but he did not win won....He definitely deserves one. Also he still has other awards.
he DEFINATLEY shouldve gotten the oscar hes just amazing.. i love him because of his achievments and everything ... pus it helps that he is pretty goodlooking... :)
He had ballet training? But I love this scene. It illustrates the very nature of silent film.
Actually, if you've seen his interview with Jim Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio, they made a point of showing this clip because he never did have any ballet training. The guy's just a whiz.
Downey's British accent is so hot, it's distracting almost how hot it is.
I need to watch this again, this time on mute.
Anyways, it was a crime he didn't even get an academy award nod, WTF? VERY few actors could do what he did in this film. You could tell he worked his ass off to perfect Chaplin for this film.
simplyyyyyyy... RDJ, the best
GENIUS actor, Downey.. and we almost lost him.
I hope he can hit the heights as a performer again! *****
I think he did just fine.
He's okay
i love this. Chaplin AND RDJ. perfect.
RDJ did a fantastic job playing Chaplin, but he could never capture the real genius that Charlie was. Chaplin was on a completely different plane that any actor could even try to achieve.
this is my favorite scene of the movie
I love him!!
this movie is easy to rent in the drama section i believe at the video store.
as for RDJ - he is *so so* good in this, i agree he should've gotten the oscar that year, but... oh well :(
wow im a huge fan of Charlie Chaplin i have nearly all of his movies (as well as Buster Keaton)
RDJ did an amazing job! he reeks of chaplin in this movie.
great clip from claplin [1992 ] film !!!
My favourite scene is when he proposes to Hetty. It's sooo cute.
Haha very funny and very cute :D
This is on Netflix, everyone! :D
Yes, I also read on IMDb that as a child in the Chelsea House, he studied classical ballet at age 10. But this article here confirmed it:

One can tell. He put so much into playing Chaplin. It was pretty much the only time he didn't play himself.

Did Downey actually have ballet training? But I love this scene. Come to think of it, I've seen him do balletic stuff in movies before. "Less Than Zero" and the like. He shows that type of Baryshnikov charm and energy.
It illustrates the very nature of silent film. The Tramp never spoke. But he did sing in his last film. Though in "The Great Dictator," his Jewish barber character was a lot like that Little Tramp. Same soul, spirit and... dreams.

@PaniqBloosh my friend, I couldn't agree more :)
amen to that
@PaniqBloosh Yes it is lol
@PaniqBloosh He is creative but I don't get, "And his booty yeehaw."
he's great but not near chaplin, sorry O.o that's a lot to say, don't say it lightly because no one has ever reached those heights.
