This scene is actually more normal than people realize. Ernie and James have no intention of hurting each other. It's the same way my friends and I play with each other. We almost see this scene through the eyes of Charles, who is reaching critical stages of substance D toxicity. He is paranoid and instead of seeing two men playing as he should, he sees two men about to murder each other. It's like the visual test where Bob sees the sheep instead of the dog. Charles saw everything that was happening, but he percieved it as a sheep instead of what it actually was. It's absolutely insane how many new things I pick up each time I watch this movie.
I had a room mate step out once and I thought he had set me up and the feds were coming to raid the house. I had two chicks at the house, and I was going to use them as hostages and murder suicide us all. But really, I had smoked a bad batch of meth, and I was having a complete psychotic meltdown. A few minutes later my friend came back and I realized I was wrapped up in a deep paranoid delusion. I quit drugs shortly afterwards and never went back.
That's actually a really good point. A lot of dystopian movies would have the over-the-top cyberpunk, techno-fascism that we see in many other works. But the oppression and dysfunction here is a lot more low-key and mundane, probably closer to how a real drug-distributing corporation would want things.
God, I just noticed that Barris isn't actually typing anything into his calculator watch, just fiddling with the dials to look important....Love this flick
I've never ever seen a movie that accurately portrays schizophrenia/paranoia like this movie. I never really got that the first time watching it so I found it stupid, but watching it a second time really shows how awesome it is. One of my favorite movies.
The gong when he appears with the hammer 😂😂😂😂😂 “don’t take the car… you’ll kill yourself!” Such a tragic book/movie. But the dynamic of that circle of friends PKD dedicated the book to is so absolutely on point.
@@ngonzales3781 ?the characters in the movie? More like a buncha Hunter S Thompsons that don’t write. There’s no such thing as evil hippies. Just hippies. Hippies suck.
I'd agree with that. Plus it's Barris being "faux-intellectual junkie" and Luckman being "anti-intellectual jock junkie" which are their primary character traits.
RD jr is just per gold in this film a perfect role as a drug dealer just wow brilliant over the top personality. reminds of Johnny Depp's role in fear and loathing in las vegas
I've only ever watched this movie once because it was jarring and made me uncomfortable. Nothing wrong with the rotoscope, quite the opposite, it was a very refreshing style. The constant paranoia and depression just got to me. A very good and impressive film and cast. I'm a huge fan of PKD.
Yeah it freaked me out the first time i saw I was 14 and I was afraid of being schizophrenic it just scared me for some reason i don't know why but I've watched it recently i could handle it but for some reason it scared me when I was younger
i have been walking around my house since 8 0 clock this morning telling every to ''shut tha fuck up'' thinking what fucking movie is that from? FINALLLLY
The line at 1:12 where he says "You are constitutionally incapable of not shutting the fuck up" has always fucked with my brain. I'm thinking, isn't that a double negative? But then I think about it, if he said: "You are constitutionally incapable of shutting the fuck up" - This means he is not able to shut up. But he said: "incapable of NOT shutting the fuck up" - This somehow also means he is not able to shut up. Am I a pea brain or is this actually confusing and amazing?
barris is trying to calculate the inertial mass of the car and to do so he needed the weight of the car, however, luckman was teasing and mocking him by asking ridiculous questions reguarding the weight ("is that metal cleats or plastic?") naturally, barris got pissed off and sore about being teased
God damn saw this last night and it was amazing to see all these big names together and the animation style gave it that extra edge. Also love that Alex jones was in it
I've watched the movie first, and then years later, i became a big fan of PKD ,and I read lots of his work, including a scanner darkly. Yesterday, i watched the movie almost right after completing the book. And this scene in a move made me fill bad, because of how they all treated Freck here and how they basically pushed him, and in the book he makes disicion to leave without the "evereybody fucked up" exchange,in a book he hears remark about the most dangerous man when he already driving off , not that there is no implication of disregard of their freind state in the book, but here in the move it felt really harsh and i felt sorry for Freck really bad.
Honestly one of the more unsettling scenes in the books. It’s like a group of people earnestly speaking nonsense, all you can really feel is a horrible sense of unease
I absolutely love this scene even though I'm too dumb to get it Why did they start a hammer fight to the death only to give up and forget the whole thing in line ten seconds?
This scene is so intensely manic. They cycled through three or four completely distinct scenarios in less than three minutes. Amazing.
....Hollywood fucked up
They had everything and they still dont get it

@@Ajidam - trippy. Glad you are back in the land of the living.
3 Minutes in the Valley
I love the way this movie portrays society’s dystopia without going too off the rails

But the oppression and dysfunction here is a lot more low-key and mundane, probably closer to how a real drug-distributing corporation would want things.
The moment you realized, it's a movie about a dystopian future and not the state of things right now.
thats the material speaking. Philip K Dick was in control even though he was dead
God, I just noticed that Barris isn't actually typing anything into his calculator watch, just fiddling with the dials to look important....Love this flick
"This place has become unsafe." I feel like that line sums up the idea of the book and movie pretty well.
"No no, it is yuhguhguhgoo that are fuguckededup" is quoted so often in my household, still to this day
"No, I just saw it inside and I thought, ya know, I'd just bring it along with me."
This movie was ahead of its time. All my friends hated it but I found it so intriguing. The paranoia, the comedy, the tragedy
"What kind of bug?"
"Bout to get fucked up bitch beetle!"
Robert Downey was the logical choice for Barris.

+infraredinstinct Read the book by Philip K Dick! It's great, although they pretty much followed it straightforward in the film adaptation
PKD (the author) was both a schizophrenic and a speed freak. According to him, everything in the book he saw with his own eyes during those 2 years.
Agreed. Reminds me of me when I'm deep in a bpd manic phase. Just before I have to 'take a vacation' for a month or two.
Watch undone. Same film style and relates to schizophrenia.
Wtf are you talking about
Love how Bob doesn't even turn from the engine when the fight starts. This is clearly a daily occurrence for him.
Been reading this book for like the 5th time. Just got through this scene yesterday. I think this is one of the best PKD movie adaptations.
i'd think it's the most faithful one
The only squad capable of matching always sunny’s energy
pkd never wrote about a character like frank tho...think bout dat
This doesnt remind me anything of its always sunny but okay go off
The gong when he appears with the hammer 😂😂😂😂😂 “don’t take the car… you’ll kill yourself!”

the way the dude in the jumpsuit is so paranoid but trying to act as normal as possible thereby completely acting manic as fuck is just brilliant

Hades defiantly hunter s thompson
While I can't really imagine anyone else but RDJ playing Barris I think JD would have made a brilliant alternative Barris!
I love how the meaning of the movie is essentially “check yourself before you Freck yourself.”

Yeah I feel the same way
"What if he goes in there to get his gun, and his silencer?"
Well, unless he's figured it out you only have to worry about the gun.
I only watched this movie because of its distinct art style, and it had me intrigued. This movie is just should have been called Paranoia.
such a great cast!!! I forgot how great this movie is
freaking fantastic film.
No no! It is you-gogo-goo! That is fugupdy-gup!

When Neo, Haymitch and Tony Stark are on drugs
haha right. they all do so fucking good in this movie
Alvaro Gonzalez that's Woody Boyd you fuck.
Yeah...hammer time.
And Slattery from dazed and confused
Don't Forget Carnage

You are right, "incapable to not shut up" = incapable to stop shutting up.
No, it was really directed with heavy filters overlayed along with rotoscoping. It's quite an amazing film for doing that.
"Bout to get fucked up, bitch: Beetle"....
I lose my shit to that line EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
Aw man. Don't be mean to Freck.
he is afraid of his own shadow
no, it is yagagagoo that is fuguckedt gaga
he-he's all fre...frecked up!
Yeah, it's hard to watch. They bully him because he represents their future. Love Freck
The first time I watched this I was so high and I couldn't stop laughing at this part 😂
this one and the bicyle scene.
this movie and the book is extremely unsettling, though brilliant, specially when I feel more and more like them...
I used to smoke that k2 synthetic weed stuff and watch this movie and man let me tell you it's weird how much I understood this movie
i watched this while i was super stoned. let me tell ya
Fear and Loathing tops it.
***** Fear is worse with a head full of acid.
Venting Show fear and loathing is great, but this movie straight fucks with your head on acid.
Peekadam watch the junk yeard scene in fear and loathing, the smoke in the backround flow backward into the car not outward, no one ever notices that
Real men watch Requiem for a Dream with a head full of acid.
We have Neo and Tony Stark in the same movie, you know it's going to be crazy.
Naturally Tony Stark is highly suspicious of Neo and reports him to the authorities

watching this on mushrooms is even more of a headfuck than playing Skyrim.
Whats up with skyrim tho
For some reason I haven't really payed attention to the music in the background before but it's so eerie / sinister. From 0:36
This movie is amazingly close to book. I wish other Phillip K Dick books became movies with large budgets. Shit even small budgets
This movie is exactly what it feels like being a drug addict in orange county
"I am a technician and you are an interloper"
