  • The pain, so unexpected and undeserved had for some reason cleared away the cobwebs. I realized I didn't hate the cabinet door, I hated my life... My house, my family, my backyard, my power mower. Nothing would ever change; nothing new could ever be expected. It had to end, and it did. now in the dark world where I dwell, ugly things, and surprising things, and sometimes little wondrous things, spill out in me constantly, and I can count on nothing.

There's a story from an interview I saw once about PKD's ex-wife coming down the stairs at night to see him editing and re-editing a part of this novel, finding him bent over the typewriter, crying his eyes out.

Little wondrous things. Such good writing. You can tell this is lifted right from the book. I'm glad they stuck so close to the source material, as it really makes this movie a classic.

Taking care of a family requires a lot of will power to stand against this bad feelings that haunt us all humans, is easy to pass the blame on your folks and hate them for the responsibility they represent, and some of us may have succumb to an escape or instant pleasures of life, that ultimately leave us trap in that "dark world". These scene makes me cry because I can relate on those moment of weakness. Keanu did a great job in this scene.

Addiction is a terrible disease which can grab anyone by the balls and keep on twisting. Some of the greatest minds have been subject to this torture. It's not weakness, it's nothing to be ashamed of. It can happen to any of us. The great and the small...
I'm off to rehab soon myself and there's no shame in it. Not a drop after the moment I depart. It takes courage to admit...

This scene is terrifying. The boredom of a steady household with children is always better than what he traded it for. It makes me so happy to have my wife and kids and house and job as monotonous as it can be its so much better than the dark lonely spiral that it could be. When i first saw this scene when i was a teenager i didnt think anything of it but just the part where the daughter is concerned about his well being after he hit his head makes me sad that he gave it away. Theres nothing better than having a family that cares about you. Being 30 now I sometimes think about how brithdays and special occasions and achievements you make at this age now are almost meaningless unless you have a family to share them with. Life almost would be not worth living without it.

The family is the hardest part to interpret and also the crux of the film in my opinion. Was Arctor a family man who hated the mundane and sought escape through drugs, leading to his spiral? Well that conflicts with him working undercover, did he just happen to sign up with the police department because he yet again hated his new life?
Also, later on in the movie when he talks to his handler, Arctor talks about his "little ones", two girls. To which the handler responds, "You're not supposed too". Which eludes to either the family being a false memory created by drug induced psychosis, or his split brain condition that leads him to confuse a canned speech he gave at a lodge with his own history. Alternatively maybe he didn't give up his family for drugs but for "exciting" police-work due to its inherent dangers. The resulting undercover assignment leading to his addiction and ultimate downfall?
The brilliance is that they are all right at once and it's up to the viewer to figure which one it is. Any viewer who has a history of drug addiction or has been in similar circles will know the answer to Arctor's question because likewise, its theirs.
A pretty brilliant film that hit me to the core at 18 years old and left a mark. Sadly, it was quickly overlooked in its time and didn't receive the attention it deserved.

There can never be a solution for those seeking what's not on the menu, you will forever find yourselves searching for what does not exist, not satisfied you'll strip reality down to darker and darker scans and layers until you're burnt out, looking around not a family home and wondering what happened and how to change, but something like where I sit now, something of a crack den mixed with a social tyranny... A dominance struggle between the understanding and the undeserving. Your lives will end violently, these violent delights and all that.
