Ya just about any addiction that alienates you from your family & friends. You're almost able to divide your life into "pre" and "post" terms. Every now and then, you wake up in the current "post" dark chapter of your life, remember how things used to be, how you used to be, and then you ask, "How did I get here?"
+warmecanic if you havnt watched a documentary on phillip k. dicks life, i highly recommend it. A scanner darkly is so close to the real events that took place before he wrote the book whilst in rehab. and his authors note at the end of the book, fuck me, its practically my bible
This movie is beyond strange and and requires an active mind frame in order to actually understand it. It isn't one of those movies you can start watching 15 minutes after it starts and fully understand. Having never watched a film like this before I wasnt sure whether i was enjoying it or not until it ended. My only regret after watching this movie is that I've already seen it and will never again have the pleasure of watching it for the first time.
The most philosophically charged scene, beats the "what does a scanner see?" dito. Subjective ofc but imo, manages to present (edutainment!) the intellectual conflict substance abusers face when given the luxury of contemplation returning from Nod. W/out metaphysical beliefs as incitement for sobriety its fucken hard when u realize ppl who adapt to hierarchic society & stale reality by default constitute the norm from which deviants (if not wealthy) stray at risk of losing everything, even life.
@hippl5 That's no filter. It's an animating technique called interpolated rotoscoping and I personally kind of liked it. Definitely adds a charm. I believe this film used software called "rotoshop" which is not available to the public.
When he hits his head and goes: "FUCK!" I can feel his pain there. The movie, I think, was remarkably close to the book. The book happens in an alternative 1996 from being written in the 1970's. This movie happens "eight years from now" in Anaheim. Some of the long discussions are gone from the film, unsurprising, but the film contains all the thematic elements that Phil Dick wrote into it. I thought it was fantastic.
when you can basically emulate reality, all that's left is telling the story in different styles. Cell shading is one of them. Could of been black and white, or "what dream may come"-style.
@ocp188 I agree, it captures all his rage and frustration and dis-satisfaction with his life. it's kinda funny but at the same time probably the saddest part of the scene
it had to end...and it did end. now in the dark world where i tworl...im in riyadh....dark city in fakhreya...2007...i wanna sleep. pain so unexpected and undeserved.
I agree. They live in this unreal world.. Always on substance D, always dreaming. Thats the point o f the animation. Nothing is quite right in their world.
@AFAFProductions I haven't read this articular novel, but judging by his other books, everything with P. K. Dick can usually be very deceptive -- and there you can count on nothing. ;) Besides, the movie is painted over precisely to make you doubt what you see. There are multiple explanations -- you can chose any one you like, but it will be your choice.
Keanu reeves' acting range varies from acting like a brain dead druggie to acting like a brain dead nerdie and a little bit of space in between. But worked for this movie.
@littlepowerbit No it is not. To achieve this visual style you cannot merely apply some magic filter. You have to go through the whole film more or less frame by frame and rotoscope and animate everything. It's a hugely timeconsuming process. And the plot is very good, so it's not like it's just a cheap gimmick to sell a shitty film.
yes a very good scene, but he's probably only imagining that he ever had a family and that he is a police officer working under cover. It might be his sub-conscious that is trying justify his addiction. "Ugly things and surprising things jump at me"... Maybe he even once had a family, but they left him after he became addicted. Notice that it looks the same house and the same backyard, only now more shabby.
@TheGoose91 I sit corrected, sorry for my error. But, a point needs to be made that why would such time be spent on a film, when the effect is so awful.
imho, this scene's far more intellectually pregnant than the "what does a scanner see?" dito.. Taste in drama aside its a successful visual representation of a conflict most substance abusers experience given the luxury of contemplation returning from Nod.. its fucked up when u realize ppl are so different, but the industrious cogwheels, born optimists who incentivize hierarchies & assimilates by default get to constitute the norm, from which we stray at risk of life.

This movie is underated, but it has so many subliminal undertones.

The book man, it's so great that there's not enough words to describe it.

This visual style reminds me of waking life.

Anyone who has known people with drug problems, or been in this kind of reality or life. Knows exactly what this scene is about.

That's very perceptive... and definitely holds some merit.
it had to end...and it did end. now in the dark world where i tworl...im in riyadh....dark city in fakhreya...2007...i wanna sleep. pain so unexpected and undeserved.

Yeah it really added to the effect of a trippy movie. I was spaced out after watching it the first time. :D
Thanks, Barris.
