Thank you!! I am practically an expert on this now. And if the ignition pin at the back becomes locked and you can't seat the cylinder in correctly check the steering wheel lock which is inside the housing. If I get this beast started you are in my will Rich. This has been a wicked pissa. : )
Rich I don't know how many times your videos have helped with my cars...thanks so much
Sir, you are awesome. Thanks so much for helping people fix their cars!!!!
that's dedication, man. thanks for all the videos, they have been a great help to me and my old Saturn. hey, if you ever run across a Saturn with a sunroof, you should do a quick vid on cleaning the drains... seems to be a common problem, i'm sure it would be helpful to folks to see that.
Wish I had found this video, before hand. I had a key break off inside the ignition, now I have the complete cover off, and the kick panel. Thanks Richpin makes a big difference, when I watch your vids!!

Thank you so much Rich! You are doing so much good to help show us how to do it ourselves.
what feels like too much detail is just what I needed. You probably get this a lot.
Thank You! So needed the details!
Sounds like you are all set now.

I've had 4 S-series Saturns over the years and you've helped me on quite a few fixes. Big thanks Richpin! On this one I went with the cheap route for my 99 SL2 and got a lock cylinder from the parts store (part #LC13590) for about $17. Only minus is it comes pre-coded so I now have different keys for the ignition.
i want to sincerely thank you for you videos regarding saturns. just today my key became stuck in the ignition and a locksmith wanted to charge me 150 dollars to fix the problem and while i was waiting for them to make time for me i watched a few of your videos. i was relieved when i watched the video about taking out the lock cylinder and found that a small piece of the cylinder had broke and was blocking the cylinder from turning. removing the debris freed all problems. thank you richpin06a.
rich thanks dude you have no idea how easy you made taking out that ignition switch.thank you so much.keep up the good work.
It is just a matter of twisting it till it drops down then you carefully let go of it to keep it in place.I have done this were it took 4-5 times to get right.
Thank you Richpin.. You just made my day .. i can get that or the whole steering column from a salvage yard locally for like 40.00 :) Thank you so much!
great video richpin i love all your videos i love watching people that have been doing this for years! thanks alot
Just to be helpful I found an entire standard/metric nut driver bit set, that fits into any standard driver, at Tractor Supply Depot for less than $5. Of course this will only help those within their area, but anyone that has one near them that needs this little nut driver would be keen to go there. The next cheapest set I found was at lowes for $20.
I am glad you got it fixed.
Finding a solution to a tool problem. My friend was real good at identifying a situation, then making his own tools.
why are you not youtube partner rich? you make some of the best how to videos on youtube. get some cash for all the working your putting in
Thanks so much! Was working on a 98 SL-1 and this saved my butt
Hey Rich,
Man I'm glad you got these videos on here!
Just changed the ignition cylinder on my 95 SC2 and this video saved me a crapload of figuring things out.
Just wish you would quit making it look so easy, lol.
Great videos, Rich. My 97 Sc1 was stolen and recovered the next day. The thief started the car by jamming a screwdriver into the ignition switch. Now, my key doesn't fit into the slot. What problems does this add to the project?
This was incredibly helpful! I was a little intimidated by the job, but we just knocked it out in 30 minutes after getting the parts you prescribed. And while, I'm sure that grinding down the 5.5 mil hex driver makes it easier, i was able to make do with what I had in spite of the super tight fit. Thanks, richpin06a!
my ignition is froze in off place so i cant turn it to aux.
to accessories. so can i still remove it,?? Sorry but i never eorked on my own car before but now im a widow and need too
Glad you got it.

Great video. I only had trouble getting the new cylinder in because the inside piece that turns the ignition switch wasn't pushed in all the way. So with plyers you have to rotate it to the correct position(in line with new cylinder in ACC position) AND PUSHED IN ALL THE WAY so the bottom of that peice is not touching the cylinder housing.
Glad you got it to turn.
Got it. A recently installed after market heater was pressing on the cable between the Automatic gear shifter and the ignition lock. That pressure prevented the key from being released.
Great info Rich.
Sounds good i wounder what you will leave me in your will.

Thank you for the helpful video, you make it look so easy. I completed everything correctly, the cylinder was sliding out when the key popped out. I cannot get the cylinder out, it is stuck! Every time I try to get the key back in, it just pops out again. Any suggestions?
It did not need one just did the video to show the replacement.
Job well done Bravo
John Maguire, If you can turn the ignition switch to the acc position you can remove the lock cylinder then replace it.
Question: The back cover was already broken as is, so i just broke it off. I have a 1998 Saturn SL1 and the instructions in this video matched perfectly with what i needed to do, and now i have a brand new ignition cylinder now, my old one was broken and had to wiggle the key to find the sweet spot to be able to turn it on. My question is what is the back cover called to be able to find a replacement for it? Having a tough time finding it.
Thanks a lot for posting this video. Was very helpful. Thought I was in for a lot more work with that, and I probably would've been if not for your video.
we have the top and bottom collar off of the steering wheel and are currently using the switch as an ignition module but the key is stuck between lock and accessory because it feels like the tumblers inside broke lose and are jamming the lock in the position it's in. I'm going to try to remove it the way you showed any way, who knows maybe i'll get lucky but if this works then we'll only need the lock cylinder and not the whole assembly,
Yes you can have what they call coded were they match a new cylinder to your old key.
I had the passlock fail on my fiance's 01 S-Series; i should've made a video sequence about how i bypassed it to prevent having to replace the whole ignition assembly!
can u help? myignition is broken.n car won't start. far n too expensive for tow n possibly $500 plus at shop . mechanic broke to get wrong broke key out n to turn ignition forward w screwdriver. did not work. found out security lock system n key w chip. Saturn Sl 2001 .I have old worn out key w chip.????
Yes if you have one with a smaller diameter it will work fine.
Thanks so much for the videos! Now, can I change the lock cylinder if the key won't turn the ignition? I last the key and the replacement from the dealership won't turn the ignition.
Got it right First time. Thanks!
Excellent!
Thank you so much!!! This just saved me 130.00$$!!!
thank for putting your videos been a lot of help on my 97 s series
Thank you for the video help me a lot ...today I replaced de ignition lock cilider
Nice job. 2nd time your videos have helped me. Better than Alldata DIY. Hope you are getting some kind of compensation.
No key?
Oh i did have one more question .. the key got stuck between lock and accessory .. in order to remove the lock cylinder we would have to be able to turn the key more shouldn't we? If so .. would the housing be the same for any S series as well? Thank you so much for your videos and help
Nice video.R and R the cylinder shown here. What about the re coding the cylinder to use the original key with pass lock.
Thank you
Great video, question my 1997 sc2 automatic doesn’t lock in park, changing cylinder only will it fix that problem. Thks
One item of note since I just did this job on my 1995 SL1. I didn't pry the bezel off since the new lock had one on it already. Secondly, the 2 screw in mine were not the 5.5mm but were a Phillips screw instead. I've owned the car since new so I know nobody replaced them.
It might be sticking i would spray WD-40 on it till it comes out.
Sears is the ONLY place I've found that carries a narrow wall socket. Cost - $10.95 but well worth it. I've spent twice that much trying to adapt other sockets.
+Becky Blanton 7/32" one piece nutdriver worked just fine. Crescent Bridgeport #3707
+angryyoungjudges Thanks!
You da man!!! And I am the poo now thanks to you. I got my 93 Gold Saturn back on the road by watching your videos. Told my kid if he EVER puts the wrong key in one of my Saturns again I will "kill" him. $40 bucks and a few trips to the local junkyard later I have my beast back. God smiled on me as the car I pulled this from was THE ONLY ONE in the yard exactly like my car AND it had the key in the ignition. This is God's way of making up for me not winning Powerball.....bahahaha!!
Hi Rich, Many times, my key is in the ignition and it will not, after I fiddle with it, it will finally turn. I changed keys and this doesn't happen often, but still does once in a while. Do you think I would need to replace the lock cylinder?
I have 202,000K on my SC2 2002 Saturn.
rich, how do you fit your key? do we have to take it to the service and they have to match each other or you get another key when you buy the cylinder?
Take your new uncoded cylinder with your old one to a locksmith so he can code your new cylinder. Then you need to have a new key cut by the V.I.N. which the dealer and some locksmiths can do.
Thank you so much. I haven't attempted the repair yet but I was wondering if a 7/32 socket works? That converts to 5.56 mm which is pretty close to the 5.5 you say it is ...
if the key does not turn the cylinder, try some WD40 in the ignition and tap on the top of the housing with a small hammer or wrench or something while trying to turn the key. It worked for me, even though I tried all week to turn the key. Even tried a new key. I squealed with glee.
Rich, I'm do grateful for this video! Question: My key is stuck in the ON position. I can start the car, but I can't get the key to turn backwards to the ACC or OFF position. Can I still get the cylinder out? I want to know before I get started...Thanks!!
If the pin will not move with the cylinder in the ACC position then it sounds like the cylinder is not in correctly.
I'm looking at my Chilton manual on disarming and rearming the SIR (airbag system). Do you have a video on how to do that? I LOVE your videos! There are many videos on UA-cam, but yours are always so simple, clear and easy to follow! Thank you!!
What you can try before replacing the cylinder is try cleaning it out with contact cleaner.
My 2007 VUE (not a hybrid) has a problem with the ignition cylinder. I have the trim off. I have only one hole on the top of the ignition that could possibly be the hole to use to push down on but it won't push down. What can you tell me? I put the key in and turned it to accessory and tried to put the L shaped tool in the hole, it would only go maybe 3/16", then turned the key to the right as if I was starting the car slowly and pushed down firmly on the L shaped tool. I also pulled on the key hoping it would come out. Nothing. What am I doing wrong or is a 2007 different. My key is not chipped.
love watching your vids good job and keep it up
They have a 5.5mm nut driver?
richpin06a where do you get the 5.5 mm nut driver? I don't have that one but I do have a 5 mm.
Rich .. How about using a 7/32 socket. Its only .002 bigger and probably more common then then 5.5mm. As always, great video.
If you got the key out with the cylinder still in the ACC position i would say your key must be very worn.I would have a new key cut by the VIN from the dealer and see if that will work.
Rich, my kid screwed up the lock so now the real key won't fit. I gotta get this beast back on the road. Any suggestions. ( have tried another key...he totaled the tumblers). HELP
what i mean is that the key is stuck and will not move any direction, I have a blister on my right thumb attempting to get it to move...what do i do then?
What do you do if you lost the ignition key and can't get it to turn into acc? Only way I can do it is with it locked on 99 saturn sw2 wagon
The car is 2001 Saturn SL2 w/automatic transmission. I wanted to remove the Steering Column on that car, but confused on one black cable in the plastic box, which is attached to the bottom of the Ignition Lock Cylinder Housing w/some tabs and zip-tie (probably some tabs were broken, so someone attached w/zip-tie, bcs I saw another film and there were just tabs there). I'm afraid to remove that box w/cable going out of it, since think that it may mess up the lock (the box w/cable is sitting just under the Lock Cylinder). On another side that cable is attached under the Shifting handle in the same way how it is shown in this film. I couldn't find any similar Lock Ignition systems in films, besides the one mentioned above where the author just released that box slightly w/words: I don't know what will happen if to remove that box completely. I would appreciate any explanations on that box w/cable and its role. Thank you for so detailed film.
The film (and it is the only one I found on YT) where that object (I mean black box w/cable coming out of it and going to the area of console and ends w/white bushing) can be seen is:
ua-cam.com/video/4XJscUVv_q8/v-deo.html
It starts fm ~1:27 (the author also concerns about total removal of the box), then it can be seen at @2:05 and @3:15 again. Thank you again for the attention to my question.
Update: I have Shop Manual for that car and found fm one description there that the black box might be roll connector (I don't know what it does exactly). They say:
On 2001 model remove roll connector by carefully disengaging plastic retainer tabs w/small flat ...
All that is in Steering Wheel location. In another place they say:
On vehicles w/automatic transaxles, connect park lock cable to ignition module (shown housing for the ignition lock cylinder).
It's A little different on Automatic transmission cars ! You have to keep in mind there is
cable interlock for the cable that goes to Automatic transmission gear selector !
The cable is that box that is attached to the bottom side of the body of the igntion assembly.
Rich pin, thanks for your clear and helpful videos! I have a question. The other day I drove my Saturn S and the key would not come out. nothing Worked. The key did eventually come out but then I couldn't get theignition back to lock. The bell was binging even though I got the key out. I figured the lock cylinder was finished so I got a replacement, and followed your video to replace it. Done! Except the key won't come out. Sheesh. Any suggestions about what I am missing here?
Suuuuper helpful!
Rich the lock cylinder for the s series isn't the same as a 1998 sw2 is it? Parts i am looking at online come with a housing for the most part. Some sites show a lock cylinder only for this as well so sort of confusedmodel
When you installed the new lock cylinder, do you now have two different keys for the ignition and door and trunk now? Is it possible to buy a new lock cylinder and get it keyed the same as your original keys?
I have not changed a cylinder on the 92 camry.
Replacing the housing and lock cylinder might be the only way to fix the problem.
Thanks Rich, Can this be removed without a key. I lost my only key.
great video....i got it done!
thanks, just watched both videos, but our 99 sl2 seems to be a little different. Can't find a hole on the side???
First view! Nice detailed video, rich. Why did this car need a new lock cylinder?
Then any suggestion? Should I just trade in the car with the defect? I'm getting rid of it as soon as I can get it fixed. Or any suggestion as to how to get it in the ACC position? Thanks for the reply...
It is the Saturn in this video.
When you say to line up the piece that engages the ignition switch, should you be lining it up at the off position?
Rich, awesome video. I used this as a guide for replacing a cylinder where I had been getting my key stuck (both getting to turn to "acc" and when inserting the key, and getting it to turn back to pull it out). The replacement went smooth, just like you showed it. However, now a few days after that replacement I'm getting my key stuck in this *new* cylinder when I try to take the key out. Inserting and turning the key is fine, but it gets stuck trying to turn it to get it out. Surely it's not that this new cylinder is bad too. What the heck could it be if it's not the cylinder itself?
Did you actually buy a new ignition cylinder that came with its own set of keys? Or did you get tricked like I did and bought a used one that you have to make keys for and then reprogram the car's security systems?
thumbs up..helpful tutorial video
What if your tumbler won't turn to the off position and your odometer and battery light stay on
The housings would also be the same over the three models.
Rich I have used your videos in the past there great. My keys for my 1999 Saturn SC1 3dr have somehow disappeared. I am now considering changing to a new lock but the problem of course is no key to put into the acc position. Any ides for this? MAjor Help Please
That is a problem.Your best bet might be to find a locksmith and see if he can remove the cylinder. If you can not remove the cylinder then you will have to replace the housing.
My key is stuck in my 1993 Saturn with the steering wheel not locked. I watched your video (Outstanding! Thank you!) thinking I may need to replace the ignition lock cylinder (What a joke; I'm a mechanical klutz), but I don't think I can do it with the key stuck in. Or more accurately, I don't think I can get someone with a brain to do it with the key still in. With the steering wheel not locked, could this be more related to the automatic transmission gears or the battery? Thank you very much.
No, I don't need the same key, I can use the original for the trunk and glove box, and turn it into a "Valet Key" if you will. So, you're saying I can buy the inexpensive one and replace it without having to go through all the trouble of having it coded, and it should work?
You are one lucky son of a gun.
great choice on the transmission ; - )
Thank you so much.
why do you need to change the lock cylinder?
Also, when I try to get the part, the dealer tells me the key needs to programmed, the entire cylinder and housing costs like $99 bucks plus the cost of the programming. I see some on line for like $15 bucks at most, will this work for my situation? not looking to put any more $$ into the vehicle. By the way the video was great.
It all depends if you want the same key as you have for the doors and trunk (coding needed) or not.
What If you lose your original key. How do you replace it then
If you are at the point were you can not turn the cylinder anymore then you have to replace the cylinder and housing.
Hey rich I have a 2006 ion and yesterday the key got stuck on ACC. It will not turn to the left to shut off the car only to the right. I finally got key out but ignition is still stuck on ACC and won't budge left to shut off. What do I do??
Luckily there is no pass lock on 91-99 Saturns.
