Don't re-use the worn out slugs from the old lock cylinder. They were likely at least part of the problem. Usually it's a combination of the old worn key and old worn tumblers.
Each worn slug (tumbler) in the old lock cylinder has a number stamped on it. You should write the tumbler numbers and positions on a piece of paper. Usually there are only a few depths of tumblers on an automobile.
Insert brand new tumblers with the numbers from your paper in the new lock cylinder.
The tumbler numbers will also allow you get a brand new key cut at a decent locksmith. You'll want a key that isn't worn down causing the new cylinder to be hard to turn.
You should use new slugs (tumblers) since the old ones from the bad cylinder are likely worn down and part of the problem requiring a new cylinder.
Thanks! Just used your video to recode my new Standard Brand Ford F150 ignition cylinder to match the old key. You made my day!
Perfect explanation 🙌🏼😇
Great video!!! I have to do get a new ignition cylinder lock for my 03 Expedition. Dealership says it will be $250 for parts & labor! Will this method work for me? I have 2 spare keys as well. One I rarely use & still the ignition is stuck. I taped it with a rubber mallet & it turned over. So I know it's not the key. Thanks!!! I hope to hear back from you as I'm going to try this before dropping 250 which I don't have. O' reillys has it with the transponder key for $65. I appreciate any advice! Thank you! Mike
Can you usually reuse the tumblers? Is it the keeper that usually wears out and doesnt allow you to turn your key without having to wiggle the key?
I bought part number 924-724 from autozone for a 2003 mazda b3000.
Will the provided spare keys work without using the orginal key with the chip?
The orginal lock cylinder gave out.
