- This is my first ever attempt at something like this so the video is longer than most instructional videos (that and I ramble quite a bit haha). However, I was successful and all is good and like I said, a bit long but you can shuffle through. 2007 Saturn Vue
Thank you for this video! 7yrs later, and you're still able to help out! Much appreciated!
hey were your dash lights not working I'm going through this right now not sure if it's the ignition tho help pls
Thanks for the life saving instructions. It took me ten minutes to get my key to turn. Got to work and found your video. Pulled the cylinder and cleaned it and lubed it. Now it works. Saved me a ton of money.
@@grenadier1943 it's great to know these videos are still helping folks!
Your video is incredible sir. Didnt miss a single step. Great instruction
Thanks for the comment. I appreciate that.
First time I’ve ever re-keyed a lock cylinder and this helped TREMENDOUSLY! Tyvm
Thanks for the comment. I'm very glad it helped.
After replacing your ignition cylinder . Did you have to reprogram your vehicle ?
Thnx for this video. My key is stuck going to remove the cylinder and give it a clean
Update
After following your Guide and removing the Cylinder and removing the springs and the Numbered lil keys I cleaned everything out with WD40. key doesn't get stuck anymore and everything is working flawlessly. Thanks Again!
@@frankjdm4636 I hope it works for you.
@@Jackleg Thanks 😊 🙏
,thank you for your video , without it i would never have been able to re-code the cylinder, and your " long video " explains very well what should be done , it's just perfect very easy to understand
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad it helped.
After replacing your ignition cylinder .Did you have to reprogram your car ?
Okay but what if the key won't turn in the ignition
your video literally helped me get this done this morning, saved me about 220 bucks. thanks again.
Another video on ytube said taking vin to dealer makes a brand new key that's not worn out will fix problem. I'm going to try that first then this process next. Thanks, great video.
What dealer????
Greatly appreciated. Your thoroughness helped me get this done in just under 45 minutes!
Devon Smith Thanks for the comment. Glad it helped!
Hi. I found this video a few days ago. I bought the ignition cylinder and my husband followed your exact instructions. It worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this video. You are a life saver!
+DrellyBee504 Glad it helped. Might want to put some lubricant on the new cylinder. I had to on mine.
+Jackleg We absolutely did. As I mentioned before, your tips worked like a charm. Thanks again. We saved so much money. It only took us about 40 minutes.
After you replaced the Ignition cylinder . Did you have to reprogram your Saturn Vue to get the key to work
I had the customer buy a vin cut key first. Key still sticking. Then followed the GM service bulletin on cleaning and lubrication of the assembly. Thank the GM gods that resolved the problem. Used this video to remove the lock cylinder. Thank you!!!
Steve Lopez thanks for the comment Steve. Do you happen to have a link to the service bulletin? I will add it.

Just a quick thank you for this video. We knew we had trouble brewing with the vehicle and "some day" it would not work. That was yesterday. Thanks to the video I had already bought the parts and it took about 1 1/2 hours to get it repaired. Thanks again. The tips you highlighted were a lifesaver.
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad it helped you.
I went to do this repair last Saturday. I have been having issues with removing the key for a long time. It gets stuck just before the point where you turn it to the point where you pull it out. I always had to jiggle it to get it out. Well, I took out the old lock cylinder. I noticed in the video that that tab or clip that is on the base that pops out when the key is in position to pull out, it was getting stuck or not popping out freely. Even after the repair in the video it did not seen to pop out freely. So when I took out the lock cylinder I used a graphite lubricant on that tab/clip and move it back and forth with a small screw driver to work it in. I put back the old lock cylinder and that fixed the problem. The key comes out smooth now and I did not have to replace the cylinder.
johnnykost thanks for sharing! All of these experiences only help when people share.
I think mine doing that. Replacing this weekend and I’ll do what you did. Thank you.
Many thanks for taking the time to s in ow how this is done. I just successfully did the same thing to my 2005 Saturn Vue. Your video was just what I needed!
Glad it helped.
So awesome video!!!! I could not have done the job yesterday if it wasn't for the tips ... I want to add something though. Towards the end of the video, he mentioned something still sticking and pointed at two parts. One was a plunger on the cylinder he took out and the other piece is also a plunger type part attached to the wall of the other part. Before I bought a new cylinder, I wondered where it was sticking at. It was here on my application. So I noticed with my thumb nail the part on the not cylinder part had two burs and the other plunger had sharp corners. Guess what I did? I filed them both where there was no sharp edges or burs. I fixed it, least for now. I assume I'll need to replace sometime in the future as wear has caused this but.... Our car is old and want to get a new one soon and not spend much on it for now. I'm sure what I did should just all be replaced with new, but here you go...
Great comment! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Dude! Your video helped me replace the Ignition Cylinder with no problems at all. Appreciate your taking the time to show how it's done!
Glad it helped you!
Thank u for the video, you're actually kinda hard on yourself, i think u did a great job and no one needs to know the name of all them little parts.lol again thank u your video definitely saved me a headache and probably a new windshield cuz if I hadn't seen your video i would have probably ended up putting my fist through my windshield. Lol
Haha thanks Ryan
You're totally gonna have to edit this. Great job though. Couldn't have done it without you!
Edit? Why??? This is great!
Great video guy... very informative... very clear and concise as to what you were doing.
Thanks!
Thank you SO much. The Saturns have bad ignitions. I wonder if the cylinder they used was not compatible with the housing they used. Mine, like everyone else has said, does the same. I’ve called places for an estimate and all I could get was, “uh, well I’m not sure but that’s an expensive labor intensive job” Or “ I don’t think we have done one.” So, off I go inspired by your great video! I will report back. Many thanks!
I hope it helps you!
were you calling mechanic shops or locksmiths?
nice & good explained... it helps me... THX
2007 Saturn Vue. posted June 2017. My key was stuck in ACC (would not remove, could still start and stop the car). I ended up removing what I believe is the anti-theft, black 'rectangle' from I think the bottom of the ignition (1:42 in the video, bottom of ignition). There are 3 clips to remove this. This allows me to remove my key, start and stop the car.
I have an 09 Saturn Vue XE… ever since I bought it five years ago it has done this & has only gotten worse! The key is getting stuck in ACC (randomly, but when I’m trying to turn the car off) I used to be able to sit there for no more than 5 minutes without touching it & it would eventually “click” & let me remove the key. Now when it’s getting stuck it will not let me remove the key no matter what I do & eventually drains the battery…
Does that sound familiar to what you were having trouble with as well? I’m just trying to figure out what needs to be replaced 😅
Dude thanks very much to post this great video. It was very helpful and you saved my day. Thanks again for your sharing
Glad it helped! Thanks for the comment.

Great! Worked on SC2-2001.
Thank You Kindly...
Using this video to remove cylinder works perfectly.. This video helped me get to this video?

To turn key to position acc.
Go to 13:45~ 15:16. ...
I have a 2003 Saturn Vue, and a few days ago I noticed that I was having trouble starting it. What i mean by that is when I first would start it up, it was hesitant to start but eventually would start. The other day I had to go somewhere and when I went to start it, It would not start. All I was getting was a click. I thought it might be the battery and replaced the battery thinking that was the issue. Once the new battery was installed. I went to start it and still would't start. Could this be a sign that the ignition cylinder needs replacement?
Just what I needed. Thanks!!!
thanks for the video it was more than adequate and enjoyable. good job.
John Barton thanks!
seriously! not a lot of videos on this topic so for you to tackle it was so helpful.
John Barton I am really glad it helped. that's why I do these things. always good to get feedback. :)
The video was very informative and helpful. However, as yours did at the end, my ignition (the brand new one) is still hard to turn and sticks. It seems the top piece that pops out when you take out the key is causing the resistance. Any tips?
Yupp read my response above... same same
I know this is late since you made this several months ago but your issue with the new lock cylinder still being hard to turn is not with the lock cylinder - it is a worn key. If you give a locksmith your key code, they can make you a new key and I think you'll be surprised to see the difference between the old and new keys. The new key should now turn smoothly. Don't have a key copied from the old key as you'll still have the same issue - it needs to be cut from the key code.
I had a key made at the dealer using the VIN number before I did the work. in many cases you are correct.
Thanks for this new info. My 07 Saturn Vue ignition is hard to turn, and I do have to wiggle it before it finally turns. Where do I find the key code?
Great video thank you
Thanks for leaving the comment and I'm glad you could use the info.
Does the key NEED to go in in order to remove the cylinder? My key will no longer go in and that is why I need to replace it. Thank you
Extremely helpful thank you
What was the reason why you changed it? Was it giving you problems?
It was barely turning and would get stuck if I remember right. It seems there were a few models of GM vehicles that had the same issue. It's been a while since I made this video. :)
Thanks I just started having this issue with my 07 vue , it only has 55k miles.
So 97 sequence or removal method is compatible with a 94?
I just ordered a new lock cylinder (AC Delco) for my 06 Vue 2.2L, have to wiggle the key around just to get it to turn. GM Dealership wanted $50 just for the key code
xexxodusx I hope the video helps. Look through the comments on this video, there is one about a lubricant bulletin. I can't see all the comments on my mobile device for some reason.
Thanks, your video was very informative, im going to follow everything you did. Are those numbers our key code for the VIN? Eventually tho I'd have to go back to GM and get a new replacement key.
xexxodusx the keyed code for the cylinder are different for each one. If you need a new key that is associated to the Vin at dealer. (If I understand your question)
I'm sorry, what I meant was, are those numbers you wrote down, are those numbers to the key code for VIN? I would need a new key made eventually, would I be able to give them those numbers and have them issue me a new key that way.
xexxodusx really you just need Vin for new key
Did you change your cylinder because of the anti theft/ padlock on your Saturn vue
My initial key works for my door and ignition cylinder. The new lock cylinder switch I purchased did not come with new key, which is fine. With that being said, do I need any parts from the original? They also don't look identical but kinda similar. I read on An Amazon review that it really didn't matter or prevent re-keying\installation as far as them not being identical
Thanks!
You shouldn't need parts from your old cylinder that I can remember. It's been a while since I did this one.
If you order a new lock cylinder equipped with new keys already coded you don't need to play around with the lock cylinder to "re key" it correct?
Correct, but your door key and ignition key would be different keys. The purpose of re-keying is so it matches current key.
@@Jackleg That's fine I never unlock the door with the key anyway, I always use the key remote buttons lol
@@Jackleg I have no problem using two different keys either
Hello there my friend I have a question why did you have to replace the lock cylinder ? I have the same Saturn and I’m having problems with the passlock light keeps flashing and it won’t start I have to wait 10 minutes is this why you replaced it... please get back to me thanks in advance
That is not the reason I replaced mine Fernando. My ignition switch was very hard to turn and was catching.
Ok, I replaced the whole housing from another vehicle from the junk yard with different key. The question is do I have to reprogram the keys or should just start right up?
I no longer have mine, but I don't remember the keys having a chip. It should start with different key, but the key will not unlock your door. My response here is totally off of my memory.
Jackleg I know, I forgot that fact and locked the old key inside and I can’t unlock the doors now. Nothing goes the way you want it.
@@TheTruthhurts1984 sounds like a typical day for me. :)
Well how do you remove the steering column cover?
It's been a long time since I did this but I believe there are only 3 screws holding it in place and they are all on the bottom. I could be wrong, going by memory. It's not difficult.
What if the existing keys are so badly worn that they don't turn the cylinder any more? Can you use a blank, uncut key and not insert the little pins?
Jetta Red never tried a blank key. A GM dealer has the key codes for your VIN number. They can make you a brand new one. Well, GM assuming you have a Saturn. Dealer for your Make.
yes but then any key will start the car. I just removed the pins in my old cylinder and put it back together. its a free fix and im not to worried about somebody stealing my 2002 Saturn
lol
How did you insert the cylinder? Mine will not go all the way down to start the car. Anyone???
This is from memory but when you take it out it should be in the ACC position and when you put it back in that position is a little past the normal off position. Thats from memory but I will go back and check my notes.
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
Hi Dylan, it will not let me reply directly to your comment so I hope you see this (you must have replies disabled) . The only thing I can think of without being there is my is my original ignition cylinder had a white lithium grease on it. Maybe that is a direction you could take. Mine eventually started working smooth, I assumed it was from being new.
+Jackleg Hey thanks, This was very informative. I have a key that comes out when locked.
This looks like exactly the same lock cylinder I got as a replacement for my 2002 Saturn SL1. According to Amazon's fitment information, it is. I took my cylinder to a locksmith to code it to my original keys. I replaced the ignition housing as well as it was damaged from theft. I put it in the new coded cylinder like in your video, turned it like your video until it went all the way in. I think I did everything the same, but now it won't turn at all, it's stuck in the lock or off position. I have tried pressing in the "key in ignition" button or whatever that's officially called, then trying to turn the key, I get no movement. I tried to remove the cylinder with the allen key and I can't get it out either. Any ideas?
+nothanksgoogleplus I do have one idea and this is assuming its keyed correctly. If you look at the video at the video around 22:38 I point to a piece just above that is not moving. If you slowly; push that in with another key or screw driver as you turn the key, it might turn. mine started to stick right there and would not move from the off position. give that a try. I assume the SL1 is the same. I don't know anything past that point right now. It's like 20 degrees outside and I can't look at mine as reference. Not sure what happened to the text here. I did an edit and it added a bunch of characters.
+nothanksgoogleplus oh yeah, and make sure your steering wheel is not in the lock position, sometimes that happens. Just move it back and forth.
+Jackleg I tried moving the wheel back and forth, I tried using a flathead screwdriver to push that tab on the cylinder, then try to move the cylinder. Mine looks like it went a little bit further in the assembly than yours did. I'll try more tomorrow but I think I should have just towed my car to a mechanic after it was recovered instead of dealing with all of this. Thanks for the video and the help.
How do you remove the ignition switch cover without breaking it?
HI Peg, I can't exactly recall what I did during that portion but here is a video that shows how to remove it. ua-cam.com/video/7SWjZEcjw_Q/v-deo.html
I don't have the key. Is there any saving it still?
I think you have to go to a dealer (general motors) to get a key made based on the VIN.
Has the key code the cylinder ?
Hi Daniel, I'm not sure I understand the question.
Does not work if you cant turn the key
Hey what if your old key breaks off in the ignition cylinder what would I have to do
I no longer have my Vue but just looking at my video it seems the cylinder can still be removed.
There is one key action that is not shown in this video that took me finding this video to "get" : ua-cam.com/video/4XJscUVv_q8/v-deo.html
The lock assembly was coming loose but it would move less than 1/8" before getting stuck solid. This video shows that there is a black plastic block clipped onto the bottom of the lock cylinder assembly that has a locking pin in it. As soon as I used a screw driver to pry the block loose the cylinder lock came right out.
Hopefully this helps someone else.
Thanks for adding the notes.
If you are putting in a brand new lock and cylinder and new key why are you messing with the old one
If you want to use the same key for doors and ignition, you have to key the new cylinder like your old cylinder. I don't believe the new cylinder kit I purchased even came with keys. (hard to remember, it's been a while)
Did you even watch the video. He explains it clearly all cylinders come blank you have to code them to your key. In extreme circumstances some companies make cylinders that come coded with a set of keys but those keys dont work for doors
@@Jackleg After replacing your ignition cylinder . Did you have to reprogram your vehicle ?
@@lilleeon No, nothing like that. Basically I am replacing like for like in the video.
Yep so
