so once upon a time, i was watching uncommented pannenkoek, and then autoplay started this video, and i got startled by actually hearing pannens voice unexpectedly
I'm not even all that into Mario 64, but I still find your videos quite fascinating, and would love to see more commentated works from you in particular; both of your challenge routes and of general glitches(sm64 or otherwise). in any event, keep up the good work
One day I aspire to be like pannenkoek and have such an absurd amount of knowledge of fringe case game mechanics that even the developers are like "wtf"
This is a really great video that I've always wondered about. I had no idea how you knew where your clones would show up. But now I know why you were always in a random position that would make the mid-distance be where you wanted the clone to land.
Awesome voice narration. Only thing, when you record with thesm64 footage, it sounds like you are in a big room and it kinda echoes a bit. The narration in the explanation was awesome though.
That comment wasn't meant seriously. I just wanted to express how insanely much knowledge there is about this game and how fast new things are discovered.
TL;DW: When 2 pusher/pushable (goomba, spiny or koopa) objects push eachother at the same time, and Mario releases a clone of one of them, then the object being pushed teleports to the average between its current position and Mario laterally at Mario's heights, with the other object teleporting next to it at its current height. If Mario has his hat in his hand, it works the same, but Mario is replaced with the HOLP.
My theory is that these two hitboxes actually combine and that is why the pusher is approximately under the pushee. But the pushee will still be up in the sky and the pusher will fall because clones cannot move and the pusher is still the real one.
I think it may just be a simple collision resolving technique: take two colliding objects, find the midpoint between them, move then to that point, and then move them each away from that point until they are no longer overlapping. Normally this takes two overlapping objects and makes them just touch. In this case, the cloned enemy has its position moved very far away, so that midpoint transports them - but then also moves them slightly apart so they are just touching.
You said that the cork box seems like it should work, but it doesn't. You demonstrated that with the clone of a goomba, who was pushing the cork box. Wouldn't you need a clone of a cork box, as that's the one that's being pushed?
Well, the box was actually moving at the time, albeit very slowly (still had some momentum left from when I threw it). Unfortunately, the situation you describe isn't possible, since once you clone the box, you wouldn't be able to throw it since you're already holding something (and goombas actually just go through the box unless you throw it first). Also, that shot I showed was a bit misleading. The goombas seem to only be able to push the box when Mario is standing adjacent to the box (which was what I showed). If Mario's not, then the box is an instant kill (I didn't show that). So, the box isn't your typical everyday interaction!
Man, another nice thing you've found out. But you know, the more things like this will be discovered (or at least observed), the more I'll be scared for Super Mario 64 hacks. One day some jack@$$ uses these for in his/her hack, oh dear. xD Aside from that, keep up the good work like this. I'm sure it does give the others ideas while using these techniques though, they'll come out handy. :)
In the Killing the Mystery Goomba video we saw that a Bob-omb's explosion can be pushed around by goombas. Could you use it for transport cloning, then? It probably wouldn't serve any purpose but I'm just curious.
What if the in between position is OOB? Will it stay where it is or go to mario? My guess is that either the game crashes, or the pusher goes to mario and the pusher stays where it is.
Pannen please make more commentated videos. I've learned so much about M64 TASing from your videos. This could literally be your job if you did more videos T.T
Hypothetically, if Mario didn't receive knockback from being pushed by or pushing enemies in a similar fashion, could Mario then also be transported to a HOLP's lateral position ?
Graymon Dgt both yield the result of all 3 being transported. So long as two enemies push against each other, each is simultaneously a pusher and a pushee.
Never Hills now that's too deep. But to answer your question, no. Clones remain loaded regardless of Mario's distance from them or the presence of a loading zone.
So I tried to clone stuff in my phisical game. Is just too hard to get the rigth timing, at least to me. The bomb-obs always exploded in my face, so I have made only one clone so far :S
ConexionFanOtaku I plan to make a video to help people make clones. But if a bob-omb explodes in your face, then it's not a timing problem. The explosion shouldn't hurt even if you miss the timing. The way to not let the explosion hurt you is to hold the bob-omb downhill from you.
okay????? what he stated there was a fact, so ya. If I said I hate black people (dont take it seriously), THEN racism would be in action. No need to be triggered :)
just casually making a Goomba bridge in the beginning
I imagine that Koopa who got transported across Bob-omb Battlefield will probably tell that story to his grandchildren.
If he wasn't crushed first.
(Koopa pushes me)
(Releases a clone of myself)
(Koopa falls from the sky)
Nailed it.

If you cloned yourself, your clone would be cloning itself *and* the thing it's cloning, and the amount of yous would break the universe

You probably already know how the game works better than the developpers themselves.^^

pannen you are a pure boy and im glad you make these videos because it really helps me learn how games and stuff work !
Cloning is much harder on console, but I start to understand timing with the Bob-Ombs!
Awesome voice narration. Only thing, when you record with thesm64 footage, it sounds like you are in a big room and it kinda echoes a bit. The narration in the explanation was awesome though.
Mvf314 I liked the SM64 version better :P
I love pushing my Goomba into a Spiny pushee 😥
kiefac sounds kinky and painful though.
Corkbox = Enemy confirmed.
You should link your ABC videos in the description so it'd be easy to find them, since people will want to see the full video of it in action
Good idea! Done.
This guy is smart, but I bet he'll never be able to clone transport 5 Goombas and a Koopa together
Literally impossible
There is no way that could happen, right?
Whoops it did happen
If you keep up doing this, someday you will find a credits-glitch, which makes it possible to finish the game in a few seconds :O

Pusheen?

Pusher right in the pushee!

Push 'er right in the pushee
What you could explain is why Mario holding his hat is different than Mario with his hat on, or Mario without his hat.
For that, I refer you to SM64 - Hat Glitches (4/4) - Object Displacement Glitch
TL;DW: When 2 pusher/pushable (goomba, spiny or koopa) objects push eachother at the same time, and Mario releases a clone of one of them, then the object being pushed teleports to the average between its current position and Mario laterally at Mario's heights, with the other object teleporting next to it at its current height. Normally this takes two overlapping objects and makes them just touch. In this case, the cloned enemy has its position moved very far away, so that midpoint transports them - but then also moves them slightly apart so they are just touching.
I want to use the word "pushee" in regular conversation now.
You dont talk about SM64 glitches and TAS in normal conversations? Weak.
You said that the cork box seems like it should work, but it doesn't. You demonstrated that with the clone of a goomba, who was pushing the cork box. Wouldn't you need a clone of a cork box, as that's the one that's being pushed?

It won't, since they BOTH have to be pushing, and the explosion can't move.

Transport cloning is strong!
so this is kinda what you wanted to happen with the upwarp in TTC. recreated it... studied it...
Can a small goomba push?
Maybe the cork box won't work because it isn't moving on its own (Mario threw it)?
Please do more commented videos. I really like them!
dude this is so interesting. good job.
Hahaha that ending was pretty great
You understand this game better than the creators :D
+Nintendo 64 Glitches And Speedruns Probably.
What if the in between position is OOB? Will it stay where it is or go to mario? My guess is that either the game crashes, or the pusher goes to mario and the pusher stays where it is.
That would require a concave shape to the bounds wouldn't it?
Could the enemies push the clones and then transport both of them into the desired location?
Pannen please make more commentated videos. I've learned so much about M64 TASing from your videos. This could literally be your job if you did more videos T.T

Interesting.
Kooopas Are SOOOOOOO CUUUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that means that you can release clones out of bounds
Hypothetically, if Mario didn't receive knockback from being pushed by or pushing enemies in a similar fashion, could Mario then also be transported to a HOLP's lateral position ?
When no damage is taken, Mario goes right through the enemy.
natnew32 interesting ! Thank you.
push!!!!
the goombas!!!
and clone them!!!
Isn't there a way to unload spinies? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Cloning spinies are useless by the way. Even transporting them.
where are their spinys in the game?
They get dropped by lakitus
shouldn't a cork box work if you clone the cork box instead of the enemy pushing it?
3:51 Could you try cloning the cork box instead of the goomba there?
So if the pusher also translates but its still real, then the pusher's loading zone also translates?
outro song??
also, great vid!
What if there are 2 pushers, but 1 pushee? Or (couldn't really happen) 1 pusher and 2 pushees? Then what happens?
Graymon Dgt both yield the result of all 3 being transported. So long as two enemies push against each other, each is simultaneously a pusher and a pushee.
This is some dissertation shit

Hey pannenkoek2012, can you use the glitch described in this video to make the Mystery Goomba teleport to you?
Bigglez Inator Nope, the mysery goomba never comes into contact with another goomba.
pannenkoek2012 Can you use a clone to push by any chance?
Bigglez Inator clones don't move, so they can't push.

But to answer your question, no. Clones remain loaded regardless of Mario's distance from them or the presence of a loading zone.

Basically, the bob-omb and the cork box (when Mario _isn't_ adjacent to it) are instant kills. The rest go through with no interaction.
don't know. Maybe??
3:53 just clone the box
