this new route is really hard but getting so much hard thing in the start of a run is really smart Like if in the future we could get a better carpetless setup it would be insane cause we got all the level available and maybe do some minor change depending of who is playing
It’s not practical. I think it took the first person months just to do carpetless. And I’m pretty sure only 1 or 2 people have ever done it. You need to preform multiple glitchy wall kicks, which involve colliding with a wall on your first quarter step, then having the perfect angle and position to collide with a different wall on a later quarter step. If a runner ran that route regularly and practiced a ton I would imagine they’d still only get through RR less than 10 times a year. These tricks are just that precise. No one will likely finish an RTA run of that route
"We all know and love carpetless!" Me, someone who knows nothing about this but was recommended this video for whatever reason: Ah, yes, I sure know what that thing you just said is!

That first trick is the sort of thing that will occasionally get discovered and prevent an optimised 120 TAS from ever existing. They'll get ten minutes from the end of the TAS and then a new trick will be discovered and they'll be like, "hold up, we can save 11 frames in Jolly Roger Bay." Then they'll edit the Jolly Roger Bay segment and everything after that will desync so they'll have to redo it...
@@Numberplay the reason there is that if you save a frame, you cant simply copy the other inputs that doesnt affect the movie itself, you gotta do all the way back and create a new one
@@AspectCave That depends. I’m pretty sure SM64 TASing has gotten to the point where desyncs aren’t an issue anymore, but I could be wrong. I frankly don't see Carpetless being done without Early VC. Now early VC is a whole nother beast, I think it's 14 frame-perfect BLJs with a setup that hasn't been looked into yet (I think TAS rapidly moves the joystick so copying that exact strat won't be viable), but the thing is that without early VC, any early carpetless route has to go to DDD twice and that's just not worth it cause it eats up too much of the timesave. On the other hand, early VC and nothing else would probably save as much as that entire early carpetless route, and the trick would be in the first minute of the run (and it would even excuse noping out of LBLJ since you'd have 1 star for WF and wouldn't have to visit BoB twice)
@@TheGaming100 Absolutely yes, entering the basement early would likely not make sense in 120 since you need BitDW reds and VCutM reds at some point anyway

Not to mention the rest of Rainbow Ride. Would be a very interesting route if Carpetless becomes more viable one day for sure.
@@Enuchful Right. Not only that, if a setup was found that was at least decently consistent it might be more likely runners would just do the standard route instead, as it saves more time.
Can’t just tack on SBLJ like that, it’s such a low percentage trick which is not currently in 120. That plus carpetless 120 star runs reset rate would become unbearable.
Awesome video guys! Great explanation and editing. Wondering how SSP is allowed for single star attempts since it requires a setup from a previous interaction with water (outside of the single star in question). Or am I missing something?
My gut is telling me that this is something we already do. For instance, any star that uses wing cap means that Mario has to interact with the wing cap switch already. To even enter vanish cap means that the mote has (in all likelihood) already been drained, outside of the stage. So maybe setups before a level are just a thing that's already allowed
it indeed has high popularity some retro games on steam only had 1-5 players daily, assuming only speedrunners played them often, even on sale the player base is under 50 sm64 is hell of an achievement for being a retro game on modern streaming platforms
I used to always wonder how some glitches were actually discovered. But very recently I've accidentally encountered the bob-omb acceleration and the moneybag clone.
Yeah, as a child I clipped through the Chain Chomp gate in Bob-Omb Battlefield, and it was without using the bob-omb strat which speedrunners used, I just ran at the gate for ages at different angles and eventually went through it. The reason I did this was because I had no idea how to get the star. And I could never replicate it again, to the point that I started wondering if I dreamed it lol. But then many years later I saw it done in a TAS video on UA-cam.
If you can do carpetless early, you can do carpetless late. The time save compared to early carpetless would be massive. Sure, you'll lose a lot of runs to failing carpetless, but you just need that one god run...
You get an exponential amount more attempts at it if you do it at the start. To me (someone who's never played mario before) it seems obvious to farm early carpetless attempts and once you get it, do safe strats and claim your 5+ second wr.
@@ziwuri Yeah, but that's the problem. You can't just "do safe strats" for the rest of the run and expect to still get the world record. I readily admit that early carpetless would take less time to get a run going that includes carpetless. But it would also have far more runs that die *after* already getting carpetless. It also sacrifices a ton of the time gained from carpetless to do this. If you're banking on carpetless either way, you might as well go all in on it and do it when you get to the level normally.
@@ziwuri But once a player does early carpetless enough times they start getting confident in doing it late. It's a long time in the future, or it's in a few weeks. Speedrunners are a different breed.
carpetless late in a real run is literally never happening in our lifetime without a better setup. Realistically you could probably get a consistency at carpetless of 1/200 for the best players on a really good day. If you are spending 10 minutes for every attempt to get that 1/200 attempt, it would take about 2000 minutes to even get an attempt going, let alone the fact you have 90% of the run left. Also its not even that significant a time save of 20 seconds. The best players can save 20 sec in easier places. If you did carpetless late into your run with nerves on a decent pace, it takes about 90 minutes to get to RR. Someone like Liam who has taken nearly a year to even get a NORMAL route wr/pb means you multiply 200 more times he would have to get a pb pace run to RR and thats like 200 years. Im usually a believer in impossible feats but late carpetless is just on another level of impossible.
I thought the ENTIRE hatred of carpetless was that its not worth doing THAT LATE in the run. If being able to go there first, saves almost 20 seconds, why not make that the start point?
because you still don't do it first thing in the run lkke simply said there's still some stuff to do first. then doing it is still nearly impossible. so you're spending like 10 minutes before you get there for like 1/1000 chance to pull it off.
@@gaysfortrump2024 yeah but 10 mins of cakewalking to that attempt, would be better than an hour and change. Plus, you say 1/1000, but it's not like it's that impossible. It's only that hard because NOBODY commits to learning it, BECAUSE it's so late. Like, LBLJ isn't easy at all, but if you're doing it early in the run you got plenty more practice. Just imo.
Pretty sure still only one person has achieved carpetless in real time, and it took him thousands of attempts... so realistically you're looking at grinding for weeks just to get past the first ten minutes of the run.

I’ve got a question for all these speedruns. How do you prove someone is using a tool assistant? Im not too deep into speedrunning but I often see runs of runners who do not show their controller inputs.
These days the TAS and RTA communities tend to work together, so as such it's considered unethical to use tool assistance without disclosing stuff. But as to your question of how they're caught, I can't really tell you how the sausage is made there.

Reminds me of Minecraft. By far the most popular speed game ever and has over 200 million players, but we just discovered last night you can avoid fall damage with a glitch in (almost) any scenario
There has been a glitch to avoid fall damage since 1.9. nobody uses it though because it would then not be RSG. It would just be RS. Is this glitch different? Why would it be used in RSG if you can already do the quit and load glitch?

Maybe Carpetless is harder than I understand, but after 20 years of infinitely resetting the first 3 stages theres gotta be thousands of hours of practice in the first few stages, compared to carpetless not even bothering to attempt it in a run because of how late it is, it seems like if you do choose to go for carpetless and reset hundreds on times there, or at least a similar amount of times that already get reset for cannonless owless and whatever else, might end up being worth a 17 second cut, but obviously relearning a new route is already tricky from muscle memory by default.
here's the thing, with a lot of other strats you can get consistent, like cannonless for example. you use the same exact texture, ledge grab, hold down and get it every single time. but in the same stage, there's a strat with an incorner gwk that can save time. it's not done in fullgame, because it's precise down to the quarterframe, and it's pretty much impossible to get it consistent, and theres no way to make a setup. for carpetless, not only is there no way to make a setup, you have to do 2 gwks back to back, so it's insanely unviable
@@Benjamslikestrains why do people talk about it like its a reasonable thing to expect? is it just a meme "haha let me do carpetless" because I feel like people talk about it like its viable
@@bloodwolf2609 i feel like it's just the hope that it could be viable one day, since its a huge 57s timesave if you manage to do it late and that could absolutely destroy the WR, though part of it is definitely people memeing. i am usually someone who is very optimistic about these sorts of strats, but it being one of the hardest things to do in the game at all makes me think that stuff like lbljing multiple times will happen before carpetless will be performed in a fullgame run once. at most, if someone is less than a minute behind they might throw an attempt at it and miraculously get it, but that's the only way i see it happening
when i realized speedruns just wanted whatever the record is and not to push the game as much as possible no matter how hard the trick is, i lost a lot of interest in speedrunning

but i dont want to lose my socks :(
WarOwl type voiceover
I didn't wear socks when watching this video, so you couldn't knock them off. I want my money back please, ty!
Ease up on the blurred scenes. My eyes kept dying lol
Are the first technique usefull for TAS ?
Maybe Carpetless is harder than I understand, but after 20 years of infinitely resetting the first 3 stages theres gotta be thousands of hours of practice in the first few stages, compared to carpetless not even bothering to attempt it in a run because of how late it is, it seems like if you do choose to go for carpetless and reset hundreds on times there, or at least a similar amount of times that already get reset for cannonless owless and whatever else, might end up being worth a 17 second cut, but obviously relearning a new route is already tricky from muscle memory by default.
Carpetless is insanely hard even in single star, too hundreds of hours to do even once by top runners
@@Elijah-ed5xk ah ok, ty
here's the thing, with a lot of other strats you can get consistent, like cannonless for example. you use the same exact texture, ledge grab, hold down and get it every single time. but in the same stage, there's a strat with an incorner gwk that can save time. it's not done in fullgame, because it's precise down to the quarterframe, and it's pretty much impossible to get it consistent, and theres no way to make a setup. for carpetless, not only is there no way to make a setup, you have to do 2 gwks back to back, so it's insanely unviable
What's the music at 5:55?
Carpetless chatters will never shut up now
good video
3 big finds!
Dude, this is so fucking cool
Imagine the nerves
hey does someone have the name of the music we hear at 5min54 ?
does anyone know the music that plays at 3:30 til about 5:15
when i realized speedruns just wanted whatever the record is and not to push the game as much as possible no matter how hard the trick is, i lost a lot of interest in speedrunning
what
Imagine the nerves! 😂 carpetless will never be done in a 120 star WR.
Oh god, I’ve heard this before. This means we might be only two years out from it happening 😅. Kinda ridiculous to think though. I’m sure a carpetless 120 star run is way harder than an FC of soulless 4 though, lol.
Sblj and blj to do carpetless early... Just let bowser have the princess at that point.
simply pog
We love the sauce
lmao this guy channels the 90s later afternoon local variety talk radio host so well. love the bad-attitude-with-plausible-deniability going on. gonna guess the owner of the channel is from the northeast. could be wrong but idk
