To me these tracking expectations deals is like a football team being expected to win by three touchdowns but only wins by two touchdowns and a field goal and fans being disappointed they cane up four points short on the spread.
We all know that any movie that doesn't outgross the cinematic masterpiece Gotti is a disappointment.
I think Avengers: Endgame is going take away all of Dark Phoenix’s screens for it’s re-release this coming weekend.
al patrickson Dark Phoenix? It’s going to take away the screenings of all the movies! Except for probably Aladdin and Toy Story 4 since all three are owned by the same company.

Great return story. Am glad the "disappointment" issue was addressed and the reason for the studio tracking data clarified. Dan Murrell always makes the byzantine business of the film industry comprehensible.
Aladdin made more in it's 5th weekend than MIB: International in its 2nd weekend. I'm sure Sony is thinking they should've had brought Will Smith back to pass the mantle to a new star, instead of just throwing in two new stars.
This was my exact thought, they would've been better off just bringing Will on again. It would've for sure done better.
Good point. I would have went to see Will Smith if he was in it. Maybe Sony should urge MoviePass to offer it on there to see so MoviePass folks don’t have to pay out of pocket
Do you think the weather-i.e. the massive flooding in the Midwest,the tornadoes etc..could be having an effect on box office numbers compared to previous years. A lot of places in the Midwest have been devastated that there is no theatre to go to. I know other years weather has been bad but this has been constant now since mid-May. Great having you back Dan-and you never need to apologize. Hearing you talk charting is why we are here.

I agree Toy Story 4 isn’t a disappointment. It has an “A” CinemaScore and it could multiply to $400M domestic and $600M overseas for a $1 billion dollar worldwide cume.
Toy story 4 is a great movie! All of them are special in their own way!!
I dont think TS4 will make a billion based on this opening. Captain Marvel opened to $150m and that made $1B. I think TS4 doesn't have as much buzz to have legs. Especially since Lion King comes in mid July.

I watched the film a couple weeks ago, it was alright but honestly, I thought "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" should have won the 2003 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature

THANK YOU. I saw the title and went "yes!" Toy Story 4 might not save a weird summer, but it still did so well. It's not good to get on the overhype machine and pin a movie with a savior status. It seems we have a summer like this every 2 or 3 years, and we declare the era of the blockbuster, or movie theatres, is over. But then they're not. And the cycle continues. Anyway, tracking is dumb.
Also there was a boy with a Woody doll in my row in the theater and it made me happy. 24 years later and still giving children joy!
Dan, watching you do your solo charting is like watching Bob Ross drawing his paintings. I love it man, keep it up!

Another excellent video Dan. Sorry for the delay in viewing. I like watching this with my Father who is a retired accountant. Our schedules have been crazy this week. We are both looking forward to next week's episode.
“Avengers: Endgame” is just now showing at the small theatres in my geographical area. I drove two hours to another city in order to see “Endgame” on opening weekend, but many of my neighbours chose instead to wait - my point being that many of the people buying “Endgame” tickets now are still first time viewers who support the less affluent theatres. I don’t know how many people fall into this category, but their ticket sales are also contributing to the goal of exceeding “Avatar”.

Hi Dan, I was wondering if you could do a segment each week where you cover the releases that finished their domestic run? It would be a good way to wrap up your coverage of big blockbusters and you’d be able to see how much legs the releases had
An important factor to consider for any Disney movie. Older teens and young adults won't be as willing to go to most of the showings because of all the inconsiderate parents who bring their kids who are not old enough or mature enough to sit in a movie theater for 100+ minutes. And no I'm not talking about needing bathroom breaks. I'm talking about the kids who don't have enough of an intention span so they start crying or screaming, kicking seats, playing with toys, blowing bubbles into their drink and so on. Went to a 8:00 showing for Aladdin and their were 4 different families who were letting their kid do whatever (including playing on a tablet). Same goes for when I saw Incredibles 2 and the mother with the new born and a preschoolers wouldn't leave the theater when baby started crying, even though the older son could have still sat their with his dad and been just fine. Saw a 9:45 showing of Toy Story 4 last night (Monday) and it was almost a completely packed house, no kids and everyone was very respectfully of the film and the others in the audience. Opening weekend numbers don't reflect a lot of people who are in interested in the film because of the children the Disney brand also attracts.

Also a big thing to note when adjusting is TS3 had massive 3D sales so in tickets sold TS4's OW was marginaly ahead.
