I'm a little late to this party but I believe this has been a topic several times. My swing motion (and ball striking) have improved enough in the course of watching/listening to you guys that I have some of my golf buddies asking what I have been working on. My instinct is to say - the backswing. I'm convinced that getting into the correct position at the top (however far back that is) makes it almost natural to go back to the ball without having to think about it too much. They all tell me I have shortened up my backswing but it doesn't feel like it. Of course, the reason they are asking is that I am consistently hitting the tee shorts further and I'm rarely chasing the resulting shot into the trees the way they are used to seeing. I have a lot further to go but I credit the improvement to my time spent with your videos. Thanks, guys. TW
The feeling you get when you find a teaching method + teachers that work perfectly for you....amazing. The feeling you get when it makes you realize you have merely "gotten by" with a faulty swing for the last few years....priceless ;-) Yet another great gem. LOL that you guys almost missed the very last drill which made me realize how bad my right hand position had gotten.
I know a little bit about the golf swing and watch quite a few videos kinda for fun and most all of them just dont quite get there. You guys however are unique and really communicate the correct information and back it up with your research with gears. Your fundamental knowledge of the golf swing is second to none. Thank you for your time. I hope to one day get the chance to come see you guys.
This is an awesome video. Doing the drills I have a totally different feeling than what I have been doing for years. This (correct) right arm movement is so much simpler. Amazing.
Wow, timing is great! Yesterday my 15 yr old was taking his right arm back inside and created an over the top down swing, these drills is just what he needs! Thanks again!
This combined with the left arm video have transformed my game. Came back from a year without hitting a ball and shot par by just practicing these two videos. Normally play at about a 4-5 hcp. You guys are amazing!
Single most helpful concept for me. Brilliant. Especially referencing Jim Waldron. To see you guys confirm his thinking is really huge for me, as I really respect your stuff.
Wow. I totally get why people say don’t lift now. Gets my arms way in front of my right shoulder when I remove the rotation. Thinking of just letting that right elbow pivot to be the focal point of the backswing gets me in a great spot and it feels intuitive to gradually increase the bend in my right arm. Thanks guys.
You said something very key about letting the arm wing out just a tad. I was not getting the throwing feeling because I was trying to keep the forearms together as close as possible. Great video.
This position focus and drill have explained so well why my 'pulling' across my chest is wrong. I've felt my left shoulder almost separate by pulling my arm across my chest trying to get further 'back'. Thanks guys and my left shoulder thanks you too!
I've learned so much from you guys. All those little fixing my swing. It's not perfect but the form looks much better than without you guys tips. Thanks
This helped me point out I need a bit more backswing height and not depth. My hands ended up in front of my shoulder plane but a hair below the middle of my shoulder. Something to work on in practice, thanks guys!
guys, this is without a doubt for me one of the most important things to get right in my swing, i can't believe what a change it made. i never knew how bad i was until i saw it on a video, real ugly and inconsistent. now i gotta groove it., one of the things i'm practicing with is an elastic elbow brace with velcro and it keeps me from bending the elbow too much. i am also using your drills and swing thought.
This video has helped my deep arm position soo much! I was a classic late wrist set / collapsing right arm case and now my position is so much better along with impact / compression.
Great ideas-first I’ve seen to mention and bring into discussion the arm swing illusion. Trying to turn more really has compromised my top of swing position. 5 stars tip.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Instantly better. I think I was moving my arms "deeper" in an effort to create more speed/power. In effect I was probably killing my speed/power
I was consciously trying not to go outside my shoulder and with the Drill to check your position I still was 3 inches outside of my shoulder. I would have continued the rest of my life doing it incorrectly. What an amazing video. Thank you
I'm going to work on these drill while I'm in lockdown 🧑🎓. 🤞 It will help my back swing getting trapped behind and over swinging like John Daly!! The third drill feels like the perfect back swing🏌️
Weird as it may sound, I actually "feel" like I'm flexing my right bicep up as I rotate my right shoulder back. I was led to believe so long that the right arm causes so many problems in the swing that I became deathly afraid of my right arm having any major role in my swing. All that being said, it's just like what was mentioned in the video-you have to rotate the torso back and flex the trailing arm up. This is the key that unlocks the natural movement that occurs in the downswing. Although you may "feel" that your right side is dominating the swing at first, the left side actually drives the downswing very naturally.
I can’t believe I’ve been playing 30 years and didn’t know this. This will help some other issues like being across the line at the top and getting too shallow in downswing. Hopefully my body will allow it to happen. Thanks guys. I always recommend you all. I guess I didn’t remember you saying why it’s so bad to use the arms to create depth. Just bc pros don’t do it I guess should be enough of an answer. Lol
Fantastic guys! - 1. Can you talk about shoulders in the socket or out at address? 2. Can you talk about proper (right) elbow position at impact? So much miss information out there.
You guys should give an example of what every drill looks like if you were to do it from an upright standing position. It really helps to visualise hand, arm, body, leg positions without the tilt. For eg your hand speed video (showing how you can either shallow - extending right arm; or steepen - bending right arm more) would be great to see how this looks from a upright standing position, as this would show how the right arm extends without moving back or forward of its position relative to the body (and would evidence where the hands will be just before impact, in relation to your thighs)
Hi AMG chaps-do you have a video describing the left arm movement? Had a search with no luck. Primarily how it rotates (relative to the plane and body) and from which part of the arm; upper arm or forearm or hand? Thanks
Great tips guys, but no one seems to inform us armatures in what the down swing is created - is it a pull with the left side, or a push with the right side?
Love the videos . Best on UA-cam. Can you please do a video with some drills on how to get the hands inline with the trail leg. I think I saw in a video you said it was to do with lead arm abduction ? This video will help me heaps as my hand are always behind the trail head and no matter what I do I can't improve it
This may be the biggest aha moment I've ever had. I know I'm not getting my arms in front most of the time. That drill standing up and removing the pivot is an amazing tell.
that is good advice: don't pinch your elbows in. but, the right elbow has to move back in the direction that it points in at address. tone major problem that causes the "motor pattern" is a faulty grip. so often a player takes it back in the right direction, but then their right elbow comes riding out and they then get to thinking that there must be something wrong with their takeaway. but, the key is to apply the grip secret in the second half of the backswing. when you look at the ben hogan swing 1953, by fernando cano, you can see how hogan's right shoulder, though it pops up in the first part of his backswing, seems to relax and drop down in the second half of his backswing. he did this by applying his grip secret. and, needless to say, a player should never pull the club back with their right hand. there aint no grip secret gonna rescue you if you do that.
Since this video started with a bunch of left hand right hand talk. A great suggestions being a lefty would be to refer to to the arms and legs in the golf swing as leading or trailing or front or back
Hello Mike and Shaun, I am a big fan of your instructional videos!! I was revisiting your videos on the trail elbow during the during the backswing, because I am searching for your advice on whether the trail elbow should be in a vertical position during the backswing or if it is okay to have the elbow horizontal. I know there are a lot of professionals that have a flying elbow. But I am amateur! So should I focus on having a vertical trail elbow at the top of the backswing and during the downswing? Thank you!
Good stuff. Suggestion....change where you stand or change your camera angle. Some of the positions you are teaching on are hard to see due to angle your standing from camera. Thanks!
Who could argue with these wisdoms? Great drills, thanks guys. Collapsing the left arm across the chest in the "fake" turn... driving that right elbow out of position.. easy faults to develop as you age. (trust me) I am wondering, why no mention of right elbow and its relationship to right hip? Keeping that right elbow down and in sync with right hip on the takeaway ...while keeping the proper angle of the right arm.. good thought? Seems like guys like Hogan liked that idea.
Not big fans of that for the majority of golfers. Hogan had very long arms for his height. Most golfers would benefit from letting that elbow move up some.
Great stuff! My problem is a bit more nuanced from this…My backswing is fine, not full. But, I keep the triangle well and swing back pretty much on a single plane (think Sergio Garcia). However, on my downswing, it seems that my body and hips start to turn, but my arms at that point lag behind, drop down low, and I wind up looking like I have to pull them from behind me coming from the inside. My misses are flushly hit pushes, or big hooks, with the occasional chunk from coming in so flat from the inside…
Excellent at clarifying many misconceptions. One question- some teach having right forearm completely vertical or even pointing behind while in posture- seems to require extreme flexibility- you're ok with right forearm pointing forward while n posture? Also- ok to allow right elbow to begin to bend as you start takeaway?
Hey guys thanks this is some helpful hints but I'm thinking can you show in gears the initial move the elbow does elevate or does it move laterally from the ball or is it a combination of to the right elbow
@@AthleticMotionGolf I can't remember if it was you guys but I saw it related in a way that really made sense. It shows the hands/wrists raising the clubhead while the arms take the club back. That's how the clubhead can travel in a smooth, three-dimensional plane that is between verticle and horizontal - the "swing path". You described it again in this video. Whether I have that right or wrong it sure works for me.
Great drills for the backswing which coincidentally I am trying to fix. I have trouble with getting depth and being too steep. I know that the correct way for depth is the shoulder turn. I guess I am struggling with the thought that I need to watch how much the left arm crosses the chest and I think I am overdoing raising the arms in order to not swing that left arm too much against the chest. I think either in this video or another one that the pros on average swing their left arm between 8 and 10 inches across the chest, is that correct thinking? So basically, I think I need to allow that left arm to arc a little more inside during the backswing.? When looking on video if I draw a straight line from the butt of the club down and it lines up with the ankle That is considered good depth?
Great video..do you feel the root cause of the right arm / elbow getting deep is due to the right becoming disconnected too much from the upper right pec or the left arms pushing it across the chest too much or a combo of both?
That's a really good question. Just from talking with players who do it and understanding what they say their concept is and what they're trying to do, I'd say it's moving the left arm too far across the chest. It's trying to get depth with the arms (instead of the turn) that's the #1 cause. for sure.
An add-on if I may? Early on my tour friend....yeah, I’m lucky as sin, gave me a drill where I put an alignment stick across my chest with a bungee cord and hit the range for weeks. Worked wonders! Also can you do a video on poor posture and it’s effects? My biggest issue in the back nine. It feels like I lose rotation and my arm collapse at the top
I get this concept but am having a lot of trouble understanding how to do it. My right arm stays at about 90 degrees to the top but I feel like my back swing is so short up I dont bring my left arm more across my chest.
When working to adjust this is it normal to feel like the shoulder gets tired feeling after a while from the external rotation stretching? When not used to swinging like this I find that the shoulder is tighter than I realized. It feels worn out after a while of practicing like I’ve been throwing a ball a lot and haven’t in a while. Basically I think shoulder mobility is important to get into the “tray holding” position
After watching this video I watched several slow motion pro videos. It looks to me like most of those pros, certainly with irons, tuck their trailing elbow in fairly soon after the top of their backswing as they start their downswing. Many seem to keep their trailing elbow tucked fairly tight during most of the backswing, let it fly up some at the top of the backswing, and then tuck it fairly tight on the downswing. Are you saying that this is not a good idea? Your Phil Ritson drill prevents tucking the elbow in on both the backswing and the downswing. I'm asking this because tucking my trailing elbow on my backswing, letting it fly up some at the top, and then re-tucking it for my downswing seems to help me with consistency. The feeling is a more compact swing. Are there are trade-offs I should be considering?
Joe Sternhagen it’s difficult to compare the measured data we’ve collected with what you are feeling in the swing. They may be very similar, or they might not. If something works for you, then it’s probably not something to tinker with. However, the similarities we see with pros are that the upper trail arm raises in the backswing and the trail arm straightens in the downswing.
Hi I am a professional golfer on the Indian tour. I am looking to take a lesson to improve my game. Does an online lesson make any sense I will not be able to use the technology you have to assess my swing? Where are your physical location? Rahul Sikund
You guys are what I call common sense brilliant. I did the last drill and sure enough I had my arm to far behind me trying to max out my swing. It's not has bad as I thought but something to work on and beware of. Thanks.
I have been doing right arm only swings. I get a wierd feeling when I strike the ball solid. It's as if my arm is straight but something involuntary flings my arm forward without me doing anything to control it but swing through. The ball takes off. Does this feeling seem correct?

May be the very best golf video ever! Says it all!! Great, doable drills too!! Thanks guys!
Thanks so much!
You guys are the best golf instructors on youtube!
wow thanks so much!
3 fantastic drills. Just bought the live view golf and can’t believe how different my swing feels and looks. Definitely need to do these! Thanks guys
Nice! We love the live view product👍
The checkpoint standing up and seeing where your hands are compared with right shoulder super helpful!
I would say the most important take away instruction I have seen or probably from anyone. Puts me in the correct top position.

Just had my mind blown by the second drill. I have been tucking my elbow this whole time and getting stuck. Wow, just wow! Thx
One of your best videos yet! Explanation so spot on and the drills great.
Thanks so much
This position focus and drill have explained so well why my 'pulling' across my chest is wrong. I've felt my left shoulder almost separate by pulling my arm across my chest trying to get further 'back'. Thanks guys and my left shoulder thanks you too!
This is CRAZY! Drill 2 has blown my mind from a concept point of view!
haha. BOOM!
It makes me chuckle when you get your words mixed up, great content guys, keep up the brilliant work, love it!!
Two world-class wordsmiths 😂

Love that👊
Hey guys, thanks very much for your informative videos. I saved all of it so I can watch over and over again when I feel I need to check my swings.
Red - that is exactly what I do. I have a UA-cam folder exclusively for GOLF and these guys make up the majority of it. (lately, all of it).
I think the 3rd drill is a good one to combine with Baby Steps and other pressure shift drills. As always, great stuff!
It absolutely is👊

Same here, Jack. That idea hurts a lot of golfers unfortunately😖
Love this video 😍
This is exactly what me and my coach are working on
Not getting trapped behind myself but lifting my hands and right elbow too high

So so good stuff. Thanks as always.
Another bomb lesson guys thanks again!🙏🙏🙏
I’m way too deep trying to create depth!
Phil Ritson a genius golf teacher! Leadbetter learned everything from him!
what a great video. I realized how little arm lift i had in my golf swing. Great stuff guys! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the kind words!
Its crazy how much the Down the target line vs down the hand line causes issues for so many good golfers trying to imitate pros.
Yep, the camera can get a lot of golfers heading in the wrong direction.
So true man, I think you get super focused on the ball and the club when instead just swing the handle and the club will be fine
I can’t believe I’ve been playing 30 years and didn’t know this. This will help some other issues like being across the line at the top and getting too shallow in downswing. Good idea👊

Hope it fixes you right elbow :)
great instruction gentlemen!
thanks you sir!
I have been pulling my right elbow back on the backswing instead of pointing down while folding upwards while rotating.
Straight to the range with that drill!
Let us know how it goes!
Great tips guys, but no one seems to inform us armatures in what the down swing is created - is it a pull with the left side, or a push with the right side?
The right one arm drill is also excellent for staying on plane for both back and downswing. its natural with no swing thoughts.
Love the videos . Best on UA-cam.

When you have the alignment stick on what are you try to do with it? Keep it pointed somewhere? Thanks.
Thanks
I just sqozed it. 😂. Im keeping that word lol.
I have to add, 99% of your videos are far superior to anything ive seen but this one is like a magic bullet/ light bulb! changes all
You guys are what I call common sense brilliant. I did the last drill and sure enough I had my arm to far behind me trying to max out my swing. It's not has bad as I thought but something to work on and beware of. Thanks.
Awesome, we’re glad it helped!
Where you guys located from Des Moines Iowa
I have been doing right arm only swings. I get a wierd feeling when I strike the ball solid. It's as if my arm is straight but something involuntary flings my arm forward without me doing anything to control it but swing through. The ball takes off. Does this feeling seem correct?
Yea, I get it now!
And also if you turn back, with your left arm across the chest, you will always come back down, with the face closed!!!!
