The thing about the Crysknife, it's relationship with the Fremen and Arrakis, the source of the spice, is very interesting. In the real world, the Kris is a dagger which is the traditional preferred weapon of the Malays (and Malay-associated peoples), who inhabit Nusantara (Maritime Southeast Asia). Among the things which this area is famous for is spice. Spice was one of the reasons Europeans (English , Dutch, Portuguese) came to this area and colonized it. So you can see the parallels between the Dune lore and real colonial history.
The keris is also considered sacred like how the fremen consider the crysknife sacred. We are still taught that we must show respect to it because it is belived that a spirit resides inside the blade that makes the user strong, but can make him go crazy. Generally though people here don't fight with keris, because it is actually physically quite fragile and also the spirit inside may become bloodthristy.
That would be the Indonesians in majority, not really Malay. But they do share several cultures since they're neighbors. Also because Nusantara basically means "Outside Java", the main island of Indonesian government.
When the music sets in @1:09 , that haunting tone crescendo at her wailing. It's so powerful and frightening. As she said "when you live with prophecy for so long, the moment of revelation overwhelms you". Such dialogue. Imagine living with a prophecy and then seeing it happen right in front of your eyes. Dune is a sight to behold, we are seeing the next trilogy masterpiece.
I love, in this movie, that the people who are religiously fanatical, like Mapes and Jamis, have these blood-curdling vocalizations. Just kind of lights it in your bones, how absolutely fanatical they are about their religious beliefs. Their acting blew me away.
To me the books are about the dangers of indoctrination and total fanaticism. The first time I saw the scene her whale chilled me to the bone. That a secret organization has managed to enslave so many cultures with dogmatic beliefs only to use them as tools is a truly chilling thought and a clear warning.
@@pinchevulpesI can't express how awesome the vibe is of this movie. It feels so awe inspiring and dream-like while Part Two feels like a wild ride towards inevitable conflict. I like how the actress of Shadout Mapes wailed when Jesica guessed by luck the right word. Very well acted, it added extra weight to the scene. Kudos to the director of the scene, whoever came with the idea and the actress herself. Btw that scene is full of details that make sense only to people familiar with the lore that didn't have to be there but they put them there anyway
Just a note: Jessica did NOT "guess by luck." She is a Bene Gesserit sister and the very prophecies Mapes is relying on were implanted in Fremen culture by the Bene Gesserit missionaries. What Jessica is doing is utilizing her knowledge of those prophecies to her and her family's advantage in order to make an alliance with the Fremen.
Jessia is using all of her training, all of her knowledge of the Missionaria Protectiva, and all of the information Shadout Mapes has given her, and implied, in language, and what is said and not said ... signs, signals, body language, .... not luck ... but a mixture of knowledge and knowing instinctively when to stop ...
That was no guess by Jessica! That was thousands of years of "seeding" the myth by the Missionaria Protectiva to pave the way for a bene gesserit in time of peril to keep them safe. I can seed by reading the comment that a great many have read the novels by Mr. Herbert, many times, as I have. Well done! I am a Dune acolyte. This film exceeded all of my expectations! I got goose bumps...
The most badass scene in this entire film. When Jessica says 'It won't be enough", you finally get just a bare hint of how formidable she is in combat. And then she so quickly shifts the battleground to the mythical to win support. It's such an intimate little scene but by far the most pivotal of the entire film.
this scene is SO HEAVY, I love the way she wails when Jessica understands the meaning. It such a great detail that speaks to the fact that this women spent a lifetime in this belief system not just some garden-variety "yea youre the chosen one, I'll serve you"
@@googhan Combination of religious ecstasy, and grief. Her entire religion leads to Jessica and Paul; As someone else said it would be like a catholic meeting the Virgin Mary. Elation at the realization of prophecy right before your eyes, and grief for those who never got to see the day, etc.
I know some people are confused as to why the lady breaks down and cried for a moment, consider her family only and those that came before suffered greatly at the hands of the Harkonnens and all throughout her life the only glimmer of hope that kept her and the other dwellers of Arrakis both fremen and non going forward was the promise of the Mother and the son to break them from their bonds to her this is like meeting an angel or a messianic figure she rejoices in knowing truly for herself that the prophecy is true. Very interesting seeing how the Benne Gesserit really made these people believe in their fabrications that even a person who probably lost faith in the prophecy long ago has renewed belief.
Agreed, you got a guy who loves the story creating a masterpiece, some cherished lines have to go. There's a precedent, somebody wake me when they do a Lord of the Rings trilogy that has Tom Bombadil in it.

@@00bean00 In the book Shadout cuts herself slightly before sheathing the knife. Her blood coagulates so fast that she barely bleeds. Jessica notes that this is an adaptation to desert life. What are you doing watching Dune scenes on UA-cam, then? You're spoiling the experience. Also, Dune was marvelous in the cinema setting... you missed out.
In the book lady Jessica was about to say “maker of death”, but Mapes interrupts her assuming that she’s about to say “maker of the deep desert” and Jessica just roles with it. Although it’s subtle, I like that Rebecca Ferguson showed that she was cut off with “the maker o-” in her acting
That's the thing about Fate...... It honestly was going to end this way no matter what. Even though the Bene Gesserit had inserted the mythos into Fremen culture, this was an inevitability, sewn into the fabric of time and destiny.
A very intense scene. Although Shadat Mapes has a very small role in the movie it is very memorable just as Linda Hunts portrayal of Shadat Mapes was in the 1984 version of Dune.
Jessica was not sure of the meaning of the knife, like it's shown in this scene. She sort of stumbled into the words from what she knew, and Mapes thought she was the one from the prophesy. The "thinking side" which is written in the book is harder to show on film. Jessica also had to make a little cut on the woman to draw blood using the knife, as custom was it can't be sheathed without drawing blood. If I remember right.
This scene is much more dramatic in the book. Jessica reminds the Shadout Mapes that if a crysknife is drawn, it must be blooded prior to resheathing. It gets blooded.
In the book, anyone uninitiated who sees the Krysknife has to die, so that guard shouldn't have been there, maybe (it's just Jessica and Mapes in that scene, in the book)
My only gripe with this scene is that Jessica didn’t say “…and the means of my destruction, should I prove otherwise.” Would have fit perfectly into the scene and more thoroughly established the stakes. That, and it’s just an awesome line.
like i say the ground work had been done to make sure the whoever it was gonna be there because the spacing guild seen it and the bene gesserit used wisdom to make sure it worked and stuck but the kid haderach could have been anyone but no matter what as written it will happen and paul knew that and thats why he rebelled and didnt become the idiot they wanted
The once single mistake Denis Villeneuve made (or was forced to make) the crysknife should never ever be re-sheathed unblooded ... In the books Jessica used all of her training to work this out, on the fly, and nearly made a mistake, the knife was a gift, or the gift of death to an imposter ... but this interaction sealed the utter loyalty of Shadout Mapes and so all the fremen
In the book Mapes is already the housekeeper which explains how she was able to keep the crysknife hidden until she met Jessica. The movie takes the rather implausible step of the candidates not being screened thoroughly for weapons before the meeting.
@@FuaConsternation that’s kinda the point tho, in the book Hawat and Jessica both suspect each other of being the traitor because Hawat fucked up a few times when they first got to Arrakis and they have a big argument about it that makes Hawat suspect Jessica
BUT. It can also show what formidable warriors Fremen are. Also a Crysknife might not be detected by traditional scanners. Also it could have been done as a gesture of good will, remember that the Atreides were trying to form a bond with the Fremen and it might also have been arrogance and overconfindence in Jessica's intuition and the Atreides training.
if they went with that the movie would have 30 mins of extra writing- every movie from a book is a bargain- bargain between details and time and this was probably the best way to present the whole scene while keeping the flow and both terrifying and exciting the audience

@@chadoakley8505 I literally almodt didn't recognize Golda when watching because I'm so used to seeing her bedazzled with the period ensembles and the big wigs-
The way her voice cracks when she says "it won't be enough" is incredible. I can't think of a film with better casting than this one. Every role is perfect.
Dune Part Two is a better cast. Also, the holdovers from Part One get to spread their wings. But still, your point is well taken.
The only very slight complaint I have is that in Dune part 2 Chani is just a little too dour - even after he drinks the worm poison and come back to life; c'mon cut the guy some slack. :)
Jessica accidently guessed partially. Mapes cut her off and filled in the rest. Jessica 'knew' what it was, but didn't know what it really is.
@JJ Email she knows the facts but she has no idea what exactly this woman wants her to do with the knife or what the best way to approach the situation is, she just tries her best
She also tells her guard to "get ready for violence" in case she mucks it up and says the wrong thing (which she almost does before Mapes cuts her off).
@JJ Email It’s actually true, Jessica was going to say “maker of death” but was interrupted by Mapes when she heard her say “maker”
This scene is so underrated. The way Jessice warns to her guards with sign language is just astonishing. It just shows how Atreides family and guards well trained. Rebecca Ferguson is just perfect fit for the Jessica's role. Every fucking scene of this movie is masterpiece.
She has my heart for her performance in this movie.

Great observation!
who's to say Frank Hulbert wasn't aware of this during his research for Dune in 1959
The keris is also considered sacred like how the fremen consider the crysknife sacred. We are still taught that we must show respect to it because it is belived that a spirit resides inside the blade that makes the user strong, but can make him go crazy.
Generally though people here don't fight with keris, because it is actually physically quite fragile and also the spirit inside may become bloodthristy.
Also love the very heavy Islamic theme of the Fremen
That would be the Indonesians in majority, not really Malay. But they do share several cultures since they're neighbors.
Also because Nusantara basically means "Outside Java", the main island of Indonesian government.
When the music sets in @1:09 , that haunting tone crescendo at her wailing. It's so powerful and frightening.
As she said "when you live with prophecy for so long, the moment of revelation overwhelms you". Such dialogue.

Those vocalizations are so primal. No hidden layers, no deception, no resistance - just pure spiritual energy.
Speaking of religion, 2:04 is that the Orange Catholic Bible?
You can hear "Bene Gesserit" and "Kwisatz Haderach" in the background music/prayer.

@@pinchevulpesI can't express how awesome the vibe is of this movie. It feels so awe inspiring and dream-like while Part Two feels like a wild ride towards inevitable conflict. Name the song?
I like how the actress of Shadout Mapes wailed when Jesica guessed by luck the right word. Very well acted, it added extra weight to the scene. Kudos to the director of the scene, whoever came with the idea and the actress herself. Btw that scene is full of details that make sense only to people familiar with the lore that didn't have to be there but they put them there anyway
Great catch, loved this scene!

Yah and back on Caladan when the Reverend mother tells Paul that with Jessica on the other side of that door, "None will get past".
I think this is the best piece of worldbuilding in any sci fi story told so efficiently
this scene is SO HEAVY, I love the way she wails when Jessica understands the meaning.

I too miss the would you sheath it unbloodied, but I can forgive that. For me, it's a beautifully magnificent scene.

Agreed, you got a guy who loves the story creating a masterpiece, some cherished lines have to go. There's a precedent, somebody wake me when they do a Lord of the Rings trilogy that has Tom Bombadil in it.
Maybe new watchers, not avid readers will watch this movie and having a bloodied blade as a gift would confuse them.
Also they're saving the important elements of the Freman for part 2.
They could have filmed it but later cut it out during the montage due to timing.
Or I may have mixed it up.
How does it go in original book?
@@00bean00 In the book Shadout cuts herself slightly before sheathing the knife. Her blood coagulates so fast that she barely bleeds. Jessica notes that this is an adaptation to desert life. It is also explained in the book that if the Knife is kept away from a body or exposed to dry air for too long it will decompose.
Jessica was about to say "Maker of death" (since it was a weapon) but stopped at Maker because of the reaction she got. Fremen call the sandworms Makers and crysknifes are ground out of worms' teeth. Great scene.

Id give that actress a best supporting award just for that scene.
One small error. One can not re-shealth a Crys Knife until it has drawn blood. Other than that very good scene.

Lady Jessica was testing the Shadeout Mapes. Little did she know which of the two was testing to see if a prophecy was being fulfilled.

Man, you gotta love how they did the subtle hand signal language. Denis really did the books justice.
Shout to the mvp that got that tooth from a sandworm
In the book Mapes is already the housekeeper which explains how she was able to keep the crysknife hidden until she met Jessica. The movie takes the rather implausible step of the candidates not being screened thoroughly for weapons before the meeting.
and then the assassin gets through to the son, almost. kind of makes the mentat look incompetent
@@knightmareco Most likely answer is that the director wanted Hawat's exposition of the situation for the benefit of the audience.
if they went with that the movie would have 30 mins of extra writing- every movie from a book is a bargain- bargain between details and time and this was probably the best way to present the whole scene while keeping the flow and both terrifying and exciting the audience
It seems to me, instead of sci-fi, Dune's creator and admirers are more into mysteries, politics, history, and nature.
Definitely, very few times is the sci-fi element is even discussed, it's not even the focus of the books
why do you think there is no machines? the book starts off with the Butlerian Jihad where all machine or anything mechanical with any ability to perform calculations was destroyed and outlawed with a death penalty pretty much
The whole point that there is no machine and all are just basically humans is in order to focus on the human aspects, the whole series is just politics and human nature, religion and relationships being explored but in a sci fi universe
