A detail I missed that seems obvious in retrospect was that they wouldn’t expect a male to know the voice. They knew full well who/what Jessica was but didn’t bother to gag Paul.
No one knoks about male bene gesserit.
Men aren’t supposed to be trained in the bene gesserit way. Normally because they can’t
That is explicitly state in the book
Exactly
This is the first movie I’ve ever watched where a female is my favorite character. Jessica is such a great role. She wields so much power. Even down to the use of sign language- it always look cool when they use ASL in a movie.

@@ndhickson3599 no that’s not a thing
Notice how strategic they were with freeing themselves. Paul knew his Voice isn't as good, so he didn't try to do it on all of them. Instead, he only got one of them to ungag her mother. Jessica alone is more than enough. The first thing she did was to kill the soldier who is deaf, since he's the only one who is a threat to them, being immune to the Voice.
Which one was the deaf one? I couldn’t tell
exactly what I think. And the pilot, when he notices what's going on, the first thing he does it to shut Jessica's mouth as he knows it's the biggest threat. well, I just love how every detail in this scene is so logical and precise!

I love the layering of the voice. Like the user is pulling up the voices of powerful and vengeful ancestors to speak for them
Yes. Good catch. That's exactly what's happening.
And female ancestors too, for some reason.
@@EdNorty it is all female ancestors- if you haven't read the details the Bene Gesserit cannot access memories of the male ancestors (whose memories repelled them and terrorized them) and are limited to the females
But the "Kwisatz Haderach" (paul) would have access to memories of the male line too which would allow him to eliminate all need for Spacing Guild, Mentat and Bene Gesserit and thus essentially become the most powerful being in existence for that time
@@MaxC_1 Woah
@@MaxC_1 I think Paul's voice has men in there too, the first time he speaks during the breakfast scene it definitely sounds like it ends on a English male voice.
A point I didn't notice my first watch is how Jessica strings her orders together as soon as the previous one is fulfilled. She doesn't give their conscious mind time to recover and regain control, but she also doesn't string them together too quickly and cause confusion or a lack of clarity in her commands.
It speaks a lot about the discipline of Bene Geserit training. She was moments away from imminent death by dagger yet maintained the mental control needed to perform a highly technical skill using the voice to command him to stop.
Yeah I just noticed that too.
Lately I’ve been watching this movie a lot because I’m just blown away by how well it was made and the other night, while watching this scene I was thinking- if I was writing this scene what commands would I write for Jessica in this moment? Because the possibilities can be confusing but it was well executed in the movie.
I like that her commands become less ambiguous with clear objectives as the fight goes on. “Set us free” while easy to say, is not as specific as “cut the rope” or “give me the knife”. She didn’t bother repeating the command after she saw the guard got interrupted the first time. Jessica made it clear that she wanted the guard to free her first, and give her his weapon so she can kill them and free her son herself. It’s a good scene to establish that the Voice isn’t just an all powerful magic force to rely on. It has its own limitations, and it’s up to the use their own cunning and strength to finish the job
In the book she uses the Voice as a come-on to the 2 hearing men and they start fighting over her. It would've been difficult to translate to the screen.
A very subtle detail that I love they included was that if you listen closely to when Paul first tries to use the voice, you can hear the VFX on the first word "remove" but it then peters out on the rest of the sentence. Paul failed but not entirely, you could feel his sense of desperation to get The Voice right, causing him to force it. So Jessica pointing out that his pitch was too forced just fit perfectly.
wow nice catch
Not just the "remove" part, the whole thing he says has a undertone of base that is present when the voice is being used, the telltale sign was planted when he used the voice the first time. The low bass that accompanies it is being used incredibly well to emphasis how much control over the voice Paul has, and the amount of bass present represents the amount of control he has.
Great catch !! I had to listen back after reading your comment and your 100% right thanks
The voice was so powerful in the cinema, I always would physically recoil in my seat as the sound literally shockwaved through the cinema. So good. I jumped the first time and every other time because I was so invested in the film. Such a good movie.

The deaf Harkonnen-Soldier had only three lines and yet was instantly memorable and full of character.
I loved this detail of them using deaf people around Jessica because they are immune to the voice. It makes everything feel so real
Another small detail I see, Paul up to this point in the film hasn't been able to do the Voice correctly, but as soon as the ramp opens on the Thopter and he breathes the air of Arrakis he gets it.
2:10 Paul's all "wow, my mother just killed a man herself right in front of me!" You can see the shock in his eyes.

As the door opened and the spice in the air came in, Paul took a deep breath. I know this would have heightened his ability to use the voice.

Paul was on the planet for a while, that's not what happened here. It was life or death if he couldn't get it right and hyper focused to get it right.
"Your pitch was too forced" you gotta love how Jessica doesn't miss a chance to scold/train Paul.
The book goes into very much detail on how difficult it is to master the Voice; it's way more elaborate than finding the right pitch.
That’s likely true but I doubt they wanted to spend time going through the intricacies of it. Could’ve ruined the pace of the scene
... and it's been a while since I've read the book, but i don't believe Jessica scolded him at this point in the story
@@paulsemeraro she certainly didn't in the books, however I think it was a nice touch
@Desert Power
Nope. Nothing to do with that. It's about social manipulation.
Not necessarily just power. Definitely not magic. Nothing like a Jedi mind trick.
The best example is how in the book Jessica actually uses the voice to genius effect to plant the idea of "having her" if you will in the minds of the captors in this scene. The actual point being to pit them against each other. She executes the manipulation flawlessly and it is incredibly intelligent, empowering, and so much better than the movie is able to do. Paul manipulates by using something that gives the sensation of it being the captors own idea. He times it such that the captors hand is moving towards Jessica's skirt, so when Paul accesses the pitch and tone range that is most effective on the man his words act like the man's own thoughts. The captor does it unthinkingly, and even thinks it's his own will, as he says "her hands are tied anyway", and is clearly focused on things other than Paul. I presume his thoughts include the gag needing to be removed.
Of course I love the movie, it's one of my all time favourites, and forgive it for not being able to capture something so subtle. It's a very dark and non child friendly scene as well sadly.
obviously it's more elaborate, but since paul's already some way to mastering the voice, it's more likely to be a single detail of technique that holds him back now rather than an entire system of knowledge. it may as well be the pitch, why not?
You know I'm starting to wonder if the ship being crippled was less about them capturing it and more about the Harkonnen's killing those responsible for killing Paul and Jessica so they could never be interrogated.
Good catch, sounds like something that'd fit right in the story.
Yeah it’d definitely be something the Harkonnen would do! They buried an agent in a wall for 6 weeks, they wouldn’t blink to kill their own.
I wish they showed the translation for what the radio was saying.
In the book it's clear that they would be killed.
Interrogated by who? The emperor wanted Atreides to fall
@crb4059 maybe the Bene Geserat? Once they hear one of their own and Paulwere dead against their wishes, I bet they’d start trying to figure out how it happened and I bet the Harkonnen wouldn’t be able to stop their investigation one bit, lol
Props to them for really showing inexperience in using the *voice* when Paul says *remove her gag* it really is almost like a newborn moan compared to Jessica’s *KILL HIM* bark. That was straight up a mortal kombat fatality voice
They know how dangerous a Bene Gesserit is and the look of shock on the deaf one's face when the other guy casually slits his throat still _kills_ me.
I think Morse code and sign language are like the most important languages to learn because when you can't speak you can still communicate
I always love when they incorporate sign language into a movie. It just looks really cool.
Atreides battle language
You can almost always blink.
Only if the person you sign to understands it…. I’m a deaf person and you know how many people I meet that claim to know ASL and actually don’t? Literally all of them. Most of yall fake it
Paul's "SILENCE!" in the end of pt 2 had the whole theatre shaking.
"Your pitch was too forced!" A simple 'thank you' would do, mum.
Maybe we'll get that in the Marvel remake?
"Whoa, did I just control that guy with my voice!"

Agreed.
Mmhmm.

Yeah, or series of drama.

I guess no one is going to mention the brilliant casting when it comes to the guy who says they should feed Paul to the worms. That guy looks and sounds like he should be on a pirate ship. Such an interesting bloke, and the one thing many will remember from this scene, even if subconsciously.
He sounds like that, because he is deaf. I agree it was good casting however.

I always love when they incorporate sign language into a movie. It just looks really cool. Dune. John Wick. There Will Be Blood. And there’s a scene in Sicario 2 where they use it.
In DUNE it is called "Atredies Battle language" for silence in the field of battle .....taught by Jessica to the best Atreides soldiers who taught others & technically taught the Bene Gesserit Hand Language the BGs used amongst themselves to relay secrets. The BGs were not happy with Jessica about teaching men such things that isn't mentioned in the movies.
Creed III also uses sign language.
Sign language should honestly be taught as a basic skill. Being able to communicate efficiently without having to hear each other is extremely useful.
Remembering how much the book have inner dialogue, I really can't think of a way how they would turn those into movie scripts. I'm really surprised they added that sign language to accompany dialogues.
Book use narration to tell stories. Movie use pictures. Like it or not, DUNE is a great adaptation on how you turn texts into pictures.
@@RED-WEAPON and Sicario
When Paul uses the voice in this scene and the water scene, it sounds almost feminine. As if he’s imitating what he’s heard from Mohiam and his mother. In Dune 2, when he uses the voice to SILENCE Mohiam, it sounds fully masculine, like he’s come into his own and is confident using the voice.
He’s the real chosen one cuz he was able to use his male and female ancestors in one which caused that “silence” to be so powerful

Economics vs artistry. Making a film longer reduced the number of showtimes in a day without increasing the ticket price, and a film like this must rely on that business model because it’s meant to be seen on a big screen.
6 hours is too long for most to enjoy and sit down for that long

No, the voice carries messages and emotions not just words
Its relatable that a son is not amused witnessing a stranger making his mom gag.
I saw what she meant after watching it a few times. He was trying to give them commands instead of giving them commands.
Good movie.
I sort of don't like how the voice is portrayed here. While this Dune movie is superior the old movie IMO does it correctly. In the old movie instead of "Kill Him!" she says, "No need to fight over me." The second voice command isn't like mind control but more of a subtle feminine mind trick sort of akin to hypnosis. I think the second way gives way to the evolutionary advantage the Bene Gesserits were able to obtain of centuries of genetic breeding and training. Plus if the Bene Gesserits were capable of just direct mind control there is no reason why they wouldn't be in power now or why the Emperor would have a Bene Gesserit consul because a person would be leary of having someone with that kind of power around him.
Just about everything else is better in this movie than the old except for maybe this one thing.
mind control with just your vocal commands does leave you open to a lot of flack
you cant rule an empire on just commanding people and youre not gonna have everyone under your dominion at all times, plus people will resent being controlled
theyre playing the vizier game, they most likely have prettymuch all the power and autonomy they really want and get to hide their true agenda and power because theyre not the ones visibly in charge so theyre not the ones who have to watch over their shoulders

Can anyone tell me the significance of the carved out diamond symbol that Jessica notices at the beginning of the scene?
Dr. Yueh prepared that ornithopter for them before delivering Duke Leto to the Harkonnens. When he takes the Atreides cygnet ring from Leto he says “for Paul, I will do what I can”
That’s why this thopter has Fremkits and stillsuits stowed away, so if they escape their bonds they will survive the desert. The diamond symbol is the mark of Suk doctors who are conditioned by the Empire to be unable to harm or kill their patients- you can see it tattooed on his face. Yueh’s conditioning was broken by his grief for his wife taken by the Harkonnens.
@@jacquiecotillard9699 Wow thank you so much, was not expecting such a thorough response! I did not get that at all while watching the first time. Crazy how deep the lore is for this story. Appreciate it! ✌
