At 48 years old I’m old enough to remember and have enjoyed Dune many different ways. The original 1984 film was definitely a pillar in my love of sci-fi and it caused me to read the books when I got a little older. These new films have not disappointed and I’m thrilled a third movie is being made. Dune part two is the only film I’ve seen in a theater so far this year, so much of Hollywood is a mess but Villeneuve is doing something special.

I just imagine working under Denis. He seems to have such an intelligent and deeply loving demeanor.
I also love what they did with Chani. She had a LOT of depth, and the conflict was very powerful. Throughout the movie there were moments when I be watching Paul but basically seeing text saying "Chani did not like this. -1". (After the "Stilgar loves this. +2")
I wish we had more time to see Austin Butler in action. He really stole his scenes, even beside a major scene-stealing veteran like Stellan. Honestly, I felt a little bad for Dave Bautista, because I know he's trying to break out of roles where he's the big brute.
It's also EXTREMELY impressive how they pulled off the tone progression. They did a great job of power scaling Paul, and having you root for him and cheer for his success, while simultaneously building a knot in your gut from the tragic nature of it. You can simultaneously feel his ascent and his descent.

I'm also very excited for Zendaya and Florence to have bigger roles in Messiah - two great actresses who I think will really carry the story of Paul to it's conclusion in Part 3.

I tried reading the Dune book back in 1974 as a teenager , and then I tried again after having seen Villeneuve's vision, and I stopped after about 7 or so chapters; Villeneuve's vision is so much better than the few pages I did read, and I couldn't see myself wasting anymore time on the original book.

@mollywoodshots6503 @hypatia137 I would add vulnerable, maternal, strict but protective; torn between her love for her children and her ambitions/beliefs; planting seeds to steer events in the direction she wants but then restraining herself at crucial moments to watch the payoff unfold.Hollywood has many classic examples of feminine, manipulative & lethal 'femme fatales', but Lady Jessica as portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson definitely does not conform to the traditional tropes.

Dune is a very, very special novel for so many readers around the world, and the way these two film adaptations were handled was perfect. I enjoyed some of the liberties taken by Villenueve in regards to dogmatic Fundamentalism, while I was less appreciative of his changes with Chani and her misplaced anger with Paul at the conclusion of the second film.

Shishakli is one of my favorite characters. She is dead set aginst the thought of "outsider" Paul coming in to save them, believing that it is up to the Fremen to save themselves, grows to respect him as a fighter and one dedicated to their cause, to finally sacrificing herself so that Paul can lead them South. The secular aspect of Paul equals the religious aspect of Madhi and completes her arc.
