This makes this scene even more gangsta. She knew that he was dangerous but proceeds to go with it. Why? Maybe curiosity or maybe she really was deep in her doubt that Paul would have made it through.

Imagine this: An actor is sitting on a stage with easily 30+ people watching him and pointing cameras/lights at him while he puts his hand in an empty box and is pretending that he is feeling the most pain he has ever felt before. And he was so convincing that you forgot you were watching a movie.
Kudos to your brutally accurate description of the R E A L setting this scene occurred in. And the monumental ability of Timmy to do it. Now do you want another brutal fact of life - look at how HIGH the bar has been set for any other aspiring actor to achieve the level Timmy reached.
This movie Is a masterpiece.
Get a load on these thistle as flowers blossoms unexpectedly. If Paul were to remove his hand from the box, supposedly he could have gotten the Gom-Jabbar in the neck lol. Sorry, cannot articulate any more than a sentence.

The look on Paul's face when he looks back at the Reverend Mother is so awesome. He's half glaring and half blank-staring back at her. He's furious with her but in complete control of himself and she knows it. She can also see glimpses of the power he holds and she knows that she can't control it. She's terrified.
He is more powerful than her. Amazing to see that.

She wouldn't be scared, but she _would_ be very, very concerned at his ability to not only bear the pain, but also offer resistance.
This is a child ten millennia in the making, born a generation early and thus completely out of their control. No matter how hard they try, they cannot reclaim him.
Their generation-spanning ploy for ultimate power failed at the last possible hurdle because of Sister Jessica's love for her Duke.
His look says, "Is that all you got?"
0:38 was actually a brilliant scene. It showed us the POV of what it probably felt like being under the influence of the voice. One second you're standing by the door, the next thing you know you're kneeling in front of her without knowing it.
i was just thinking the same thing. also it gives the viewer and idea of how terrifying it must be to deal with bene gesserit. at one moment you are flying prisoners into the desert, the next you are stabbing your copilot in the neck
This scene was fantastic. It helps when you have two terrific actors.
Yeah I thought that was awesome too! instead of showing him walk up slowly it made you think you were the one being taken control of for a brief moment.
I avoided any spoilers or shots like the plague. I knew going in that this was the scene that would either make or break the movie for me. I went in fully ready to walk out but desperately hoping not to, and the moment she used the voice I grinned ear to ear because I knew the movie would be perfect
@@PeterIsATeacher They really did justice with the movie. While i haven't read the books, i just played the game when i was a wee boy and i got hooked on the art and the rest is history. Can't wait for the next.
I remember this scene in the movie theater. Not a single noise came from anyone during this scene. That’s how engaging and intense it was. No popcorn, no talking.. just absolute silence. The way a movie should be. I spent $15 to see it. Was well worth more.

Listened to Dennis Villeneuve talk about this scene, he described that one of his favorite parts of the scene is the room. It's filled with books to the brim to communicate to the viewer that in this future, machines and technology serve an entirely different purpose and are far less important than we'd think.
In the Dune universe thinking machines aka computers are banned by law,long before Paul Atreides was born.

That's how people of noble birth used to talk to peasants. But not since that tsar and his family was dealt with by said peasants.
Let's not gloss over how incredible Charlotte Rampling plays off of him here. She is terrifying at the start of the scene, and yet by the end of it even she realizes Paul is a force to be reckoned with. She turns that reaction on a dime, and it works extremely well to highlight Timothee's performance. Outstanding casting all around.
And she conveys all that thru a veil as well.
She was awesome, absolutely perfect as the Reverend Mother . I loved the costume design , like a spider looking through it's web.
I would expect no less of a legend. Too bad they couldn't find room for her on the posters.
@@catherinesanchez1185 saw an interview with Denis and he said they went over and over this scene and he finally made the call to leave her veil down. He said he hated to do it since she is such a legend but it made the scene so much better.

if memory serves, in the book Paul is also thinking that - but it's so much better to have his mother doing that outside and leaving us with Paul in the room as if a dialogue is going between them

Timothée's acting here is outstanding. The way he turns his pain into anger and you can see it in his eyes. Actually, this whole scene is amazing, but his acting here deserves all praise.
It is probably the first time this Reverend Mother experienced true fear herself. You can see it in her reaction to his look. The fear of what she has done, in her arrogance and hubris of her order. The fear that the power they sought is beyond control.
You can see precisely when he overcomes the pain ... which is only in his mind. Truly outstanding acting.
@@nyrahl593 exactly what I thought too: you see the flame in his vision then her actually flinch as he starts to grasp at his power. She knows it. She fears that he may be the one and they haven't done anything to instill a sense of belonging to the Bene Gesserit so as to try and control him. I think she actually cuts it off just to help keep the power from manifesting further.

I love how Paul waits a full 10 seconds after she says "Enough" before removing his hand from the box, to show he's in complete control.
I think he was also scared to look at his hand lol. He probably thought it was going to look like the burnt hand in his vision.
I think the pain stopped as soon as she said "Enough".
@@heatherbukowski2102 yeah this is exactly it, in the books he says he knows when he pulls his hand out it will be a "blackened stump". The Reverend Mother has to command him to remove his hand and look at it.

i love this scene. you can feel the anger and rage in his eyes when he first looks up . then the contempt as if to say "is that all you've got."
i don't think it was anger and rage. I think initially it was confusion as to WHY this was happened to him. Once he mastered the pain ... it become a look of over-coming ... or confidence

@@motley331 It was all the above and it occurs in a specific order that reflects a psychological rebirth, like a phoenix reborn. 3:09 to 3:23 is definetly anger and rage. The confidence and calmness can only happen after he uses his anger to overcome the fear and pain.

And then there’s the fact that that pain is not constant. Every moment his hand is in that box, the pain is _building._
In the book, the shot at 3:29 is what Paul thinks has happened to his hand, the pain is so intense he thought his hand was chemically destroyed or burned. When he takes it out he’s surprised that it’s completely fine
I like the detail when he takes out his hand at 3:57, you can see a redness on his knuckle, as he was trying to rotate or move his hand out of the intensity of pain

3:06-I love this moment because this is the moment where Paul begins to overcome his fear and pain, to move past the primal emotions trying to take back control of his body, and take back control of himself. We see our first glimpse of the intense power within him, the power that the Bene Gesserit have been trying to cultivate and harness for thousands of years, and the most awesome and terrifying thing about it? The Reverend Mother can see it too and catch a glimpse of the glory and horror Paul Atreides will unleash upon humanity, which scares her. Because it is not part of her order's grand design, because, at the very last, crucial step in the plan, Jessica changed things irrevocably. Their Savior has come at last, and he is beyond their ability to control.

There’s something so elegant, beautiful and regal in Dune I haven’t seen in a fantasy project since lord of rings. There’s a sense of majesty and timelessness. I love how their vision of this world is this brutalist minimalism that gives it this elegance and elevated it.
Hear, hear! VIsually this film impressed me a great deal with its production design and sets/decor and just the entire overall look. It was earthy but clean, very dignified.
Believe me when I say, Dune is the LOTR of science fiction. The first book and film is just the start of this adventure for Paul.

So I recently got the book for Christmas and got to this scene in the book. Let me tell you, this scene is exactly how it is in the book. I envisioned in my head this scene while reading shot for shot.

Well except she doesn't say "Kull Wahad", or that no woman-child ever withstood that much, etc. Don't get me wrong, they get the general sense, I'm merely disputing that it's exactly like it is in the book. I believe they intentionally did because the book gives the impression that him, a male, seem stronger/more important than a woman. As men can go to places women cannot.
Except for Jessica reciting the litany, that wasn't in the book.

The moment Paul looks up and locks eyes with the mother superior, she's like, oh F*ck!
"Stare into that place you Dare not look you will find Me Staring Back!"
The music fully sells it.
She was gratified that his mother had been true to her order, after all. "Jessica served us after all. She is a credit to our teaching".
I think something that really highlights how much power Paul has is not only the initial reaction of pain and crying out, it’s the slow silence as he gets himself under control, and slowly meeting her gaze as he gets his grip.
Even behind the veil I could feel almost a stutter in her motions, like she genuinely was not expecting him to succeed.
She also seemed to think that his previous posturing and audacity in her presence wasn’t for nothing after all.
Another thing I want to point out is how his mother is comforting herself outside the door, “fear is the mind killer”, and how her speech to empower and calm herself is overlapping Paul’s scenes.
He’s probably thinking of the same thing, given that she’s probably taught him that, and it’s giving him the same empowerment and helping him calm down.
Can he hear her? i never read the books
In the book he is reciting the litany against fear in his head, Jessica isn’t shown to do the same. Quite a clever choice in how to portray it
She doesn't expect him to succeed because he shouldn't exist. Jessica was supposed to give Leto a daughter who would've been married to a Harkonnen, but she defied the Bene Gesserit orders and gave him a son. The Kwisatz Haderach was supposed to be the son of Jessica's and Leto's daughter and the Baron's nephew - probably Feyd.
She was surprised because Jessica wasn't supposed to train him in The Way. Mohaim came there with the expectation of killing him & putting an end to these "rogue genes" so that the bene gesserit could continue their breeding program.
That's also why she tested Paul twice as long than what is normal. She really thought she could end him, but eventually she had to accept.
3:05 that sudden control over his pain, and defyance in his eyes, for the reverent mother.and her seeing him master himself over what she knows is more pain than what he should've endured. chill every time
The scene of "Silence" from Dune 2 hits so much harder after watching this scene and the first Dune overall !!!
In every aspect of cinema, this is one of the best scenes I have seen. Production design, cinematography, background score, acting, direction, any aspect. 🙌
One of my favorite aspects is how it uses absolute silence for the first half, then when the pain begins the music kicks in.
Fantastically subtle acting in parts, especially for the witch. This young kid too, what a terrific actor he is. Such a heavy role and he does seemingly so naturally.

0:38-One thing I noted about this bit, especially considering the Dune novels were the original inspiration for Star Wars, is a comparison between the Voice of the Bene Gesserit and the Mind Trick of the Jedi Knights. The latter ability is subtle and soft, used to plant a suggestion into the weak-minded's minds, making them think that it's their idea, and there's no need to confront the user about it. The former is hard and blunt, a direct command made to the person on the receiving end. They know right away that this is someone else's design, that this is not their own will but that of an old, wise, and powerful being, and before you can even try to resist or fight back: most times, it's already too late.
In the books the voice can be a subtle and delicate thing. It is a complex process and is varied in its applications. In the books it is given far more attention and thought than can be afforded in film, and I acknowledge it is an effectively immovable limitation on the film. This is of course a shame, the way Jessica uses it to destroy her Harkonnen captors is infinitely better in the book for example. There we see that it is something far more intellectual than simple magic.
But yes, one aspect shared in book and film is the voice can be applied to manifest absolute authority. Here the reverend mother applies it by snapping and sneering to startle and subjucate Paul, if but for a moment.
Just like the real world. Which is what DUNE is modelled.
@@pseudonymousbeing987 And mind tricks can be forceful. There's a scene in The Clone Wars where multiple Jedi masters pool their abilities to interrogate a prisoner, that's intentionally very disturbing and shows how the Jedi are betraying themselves.
@@pseudonymousbeing987 you described it perfectly, the voice in the books and this movie are completely different things. I don't mind it too much since the book version of the voice would be impossible to adapt because it's basically just having speech 100. BGs are basically always using the voice to subtly get their way, it's only blunt if they intend it to be blunt, which most of the time they don't. That's why Jamis invoking silence on her was pretty justified.

I love Timothe’s head movements, first his head is bowed due to the pain, he is submitting to the reverend mother’s power but as he gains strength he meets her at eye level as an equal, and then finally ends with looking down his nose at her like, “your pain means nothing to me mortal!!” Perfect acting.
I saw this movie in IMAX, and when I tell you this moment at 0:38 made the theater shake, I mean I'm sitting towards the back of a theater about the height of a two-story house, and it felt as if I was in the epicenter of a tremor. I'm glad I was sitting up because if I wasn't, I would have fallen out of my seat. O_O

By the end of this test, she's gone from smug superiority all the way to pure terror, and you can tell that it's only thanks to her position and years of training that she doesn't gibber like a madwoman when he glares at her, enraged, yet in full control of himself. In full control of the pain. He stares down at her even though he's the one kneeling, and she knows that his true power, raw and untrained as it may be, far outstrips her own.
Magnificent acting.

Yes... this scene gains so much more gravity when you know what's coming. Gladly I read the series shortly before the movie dropped :D And I was absolutely not disappointed.

Paul isn't just untrained. He pure, unbridled, and completely incapable of control. His power came too soon and with hardly any experience, and it's going to come at a cost.
3:00 "You'll find me there, staring back at you"
Timothee was incredible in this scene, you really felt he was in extreme pain. One of my favourite scenes in the movie and very close to the book as well.
The only problem is that they show a charred hand as his mental image ..... a charred hand will no longer feel pain, they should show a hand with burn blisters ....
One little detail that I absolutely love is the power of the litany against fear over Jessica. Her son is being tortured 20 feet away and she's naturally a terrified sobbing mess. She begins the litany and immediately her face drops back to calmness, and by the time she's repeating the first line you can see how much of her fear has dissipated. A beautiful early example of the power of mantras, holy words, and the individuals power over their own mind (obviously mirroring Paul in the next room) which are all of course huge themes of the text
Hearing "the voice" in this scene was worth the ticket to see it in theaters all on its own.

Yes - but that is Timmy's forte. He is so beautiful and incredibly emotionally expressive, that he doesn't need dialog to communicate.
My favorite part is when Jessica's voice becomes flat and observational when saying "only I will remain". She really followed the litany
I read Dune when I was a teenage and The Litany Against Fear has always helped me at times to over come very stressful situations in my life.

Notice how the shot @0:19 isn't of what's happening at that moment but of Paul walking towards the Mother once she uses the Voice on him a few seconds later and Paul "blacks out".
Yes I love that foreshadowing what is about to happen and also the shifts in time and space that are so important in Paul's prescience.
I only just noticed and was looking through the comments to see whether it was noticed by people. Such an amazing detail. While Paul blacks out when she uses the Voice, he still saw a couple of seconds that were about to happen. Amazing.

yes. He lived long enough to see David Lynch's interpretation of his work. Which was a travesty. Villeneuve has paid him the proper respect, at last.
The way Paul looks at the Mother seemed as though he took all that pain and suffering and turned it into contempt and rage against the Mother. This is why I believe the Mother reacted the way she did to him staring up at her.
The stages of the Bene Geserit’s face as Paul started to resist the pain: 😏🧐😐😬😰
I lovoe that they included Jessica standing outside the room. Her emotions, her fear and pain help to completely sell what happens in the room itself.
I can’t praise this film enough, it is the modern day benchmark all films should aspire to!

@@azazel5993 yea but this is more like thrilling, edge of your seat intensity, not emotional intensity. Crying is usually in response to empathizing with a sad (or joyful) situation. Such as a character suffering loss. The music score usually contributes to building the intended feeling. I just don’t know why you are exaggerating to the point of misinterpretation. Why are you”you” like that?
@ryuk5673 If you've never experienced what I'm describing then there is no way that I can accurately explain to you what is going on, I can't understand it for you unfortunately.
I don't think it's that abnormal, I've had many people relate to me and accidentally stumbled upon many videos that really break down the whole process as accurately as possible, pretty much like they could hear my thoughts, I hope you will at least find such a video if not experience what im describing yourself, it's truly a unique moment when it happens cause you know you've found something really special (being a movie, book, series etc) that deeply touches you.
Trying to ridicule people on the other hand, and not with much success may I add, is certainly not normal unless it has become second nature to you and you're just looking left and right for the next opportunity. Grow some character, don't just follow a moron's lead, you'll just become one yourself.
It's such a small thing compared to what everyone else has pointed out, but I love that when says enough and takes the needle away, he doesn't flinch and instinctively pull his hand out, he leaves it in there a bit longer. He's making a point that he will take it when he decides and not when she does, that he can stay as long as he needs to and longer
“Your mother stands behind that door, and no one will get past her” is the coolest line ever.
I'm waiting for the "Silence!" from Paul in the next part.

@@EightThreeEight They are complete opposite ends of the spectrum, the 1984 dune will always be the campy fun one and the new dune will be the super intense realistic one.
@@UA-camIsRetarded689 I can appreciate a film that's campy fun. But that doesn't suit Dune. Dune 1984 certainly isn't a terrible film; its presentation and its acting are pretty solid. But its pacing is completely whacked, which leads to a confusing experience, and the campy tone makes it impossible to take seriously.
Not really, it was about the same tier but more minimalist, Timothee is more brooding and intense. Editing is perhaps a tad smoother.
I love how the degree of power of the voice is shown.
Paul is still a neophyte and not as strong. Be can command but not very well.
Jessica has had more training and she can call upon it with ease.
The Reverend Mother however... she's on a whole other level.
Timothee Chalamet absolutely kills this scene, we shall watch your career with great interest.
He does, Jessica does the Reverend Mother does. the chemistry is perfect in this scene :D But yeah. Timothee Chalamet will be watched :D

Exquisite performances by everyone in this scene. Paul experiencing pain beyond belief. Jessica, his mother, knowing what her son is experiencing on the other side of the door, and what would happen to her son if he failed the Reverend Mother's test.
this scene is honestly so well done, its gotta be my fav scene in dune 1. the acting of all three, their lines, how their emotions n thoughts reflect through their acting n expressions (esp their eyes!!), the cinematography, the music, everything is so on point. i still feel chills rewatching this scene

This may be my favorite scene in the entire movie. I really enjoyed it at first but then when I heard the director's breakdown of it I felt twice as immersed. I cannot stop watching it.

This movie introduces so many new things it’s kinda hard to keep track of everything. Even this character that lucky to be alive because he is a boy, is a prince, he is a child of a witch so he can talk and control other people, he is also a child that is meant to be perfect and overthrow the emperor. He is special to the freeman’s. He sees visions that sometimes become true,. Like what else can you really add lol

At 3:10 when the voice kicks in, it's almost like Arrakis herself is sneering at the Reverend Mother and saying "You thought he was yours? Oh no - he's *MINE* ."
One of the greatest scene i have seen in a cinema. This movie as a whole was a masterpiece. Maybe you don't understand the significance of every events, or details, if you haven't read the books, but it still draws you in.
By the way, saw it in "4DX" in the movie theater (3D + moving chair and wind, and rain) : incredible experience.
I like to think that Feyd probably had a big grin on his face during this test

It’s rare to see a movie adaption stay so true to the book. Usually, everyone complains about how different the movie is or how much injustice is done to it but I’m happy to see it isn’t the case this time.

When he starts to look at her and the chant comes in, you know he is destined to become something big and dark. Haven't read the books but I'm so excited to what his future his, a great saviour of species or a destroyer of worlds... something in that sense I think haha
I just say, the books will throw you a pretty unexpeced curveball in the long run :D
