I swear this is the most common complaint I hear about many games which look interesting but I end up not playing. I'm not sure why this happens, but maybe is because when you develop the game you have the core gameplay loop so ingrained way before finishing the game that by the time you do finish it, even playing through the whole game may fail to make you realize the pattern becomes stale very fast (relative to the game duration). Maybe it's not that common though and I just remember this type of complaint in particular because it's disappointing.
Great review. Not a bad first effort for a studio that has made 2D games often with very limited story. I do look forward to the next steam World game 🙂
I know one thing from that statement... Housemarque look like absolute genius developers 👍 They did the same sort of transition only the game they created was on par with AAA games for the first attempt 👌
Nice to hear someone reference Okami. That was enough to build my interest in the game.
Thank you for the review!
I always enjoy Marty's reviews, they flow nicely and are very informative. Thanks, Marty!
It's disappointing the environment isn't more varied and the power ups are lame. I'm still going to try it out.
If it comes to Steam I'll grab it. It looks like very chill game.
Hey I just posted the first part to my walkthrough on my channel with commentary, check it out if you'd like! :D
Your description of how this game felt is exactly how playing Steamworld Dig made me feel. I just kind of felt like I was going through the motions until suddenly there was a boss and the game ended. The loop felt very much like an MMO to me, dig to get better gear so you can dig more to get more better gear.
steamworld dig 2 feels different imo, lots more puzzle and upgradeable stuff to get that arent just drill speed
@@Typical7 I agree, plus there's at least some semblance of a story hook. I don't feel like I'm just digging to make enough money to be able to dig some more, I'm trying to find the guy from the first game. Haven't put a ton of time into it though and I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it
I started "the gunk" this morning for the first time and just finished it now. It's so great I just couldn't stop.
The description says "The Gunk on Steam" but the link is to the Xbox store.
Fixed.
@@theescapist Thanks!
Great review, I was wondering about this one for a while
Was a fun, relaxing game. Only a few hours in, about halfway I'd assume but nice little game for free on Game Pass. Nice graphics. Bit amateur in some of it's design though. The upgrades felt useless though. And thought the game could have used some hidden audio logs to fill out story or something. Also, wished they would have used Nvidia Flex or something for the Gunk. Would have been awesome to see physically simulated particles and what not. There wasn't enough connection between the game's actions and story either. Like, you're literally doing EVERYTHING in the first 5 minutes you'll be doing 5-6 hours in. Nothing progresses. So, that was disappointing. Still, decent little game. I enjoy games like this because you can feel the passion, you can tell it was a small group making something. And not a mega corp/conglomerate pissing out another sequel.
I think this could be a great game for younger/newer players, who could be overwhelmed by a lot of complex upgrade choices and difficult combat situations. The design is really beautiful.
A game that I can play with my daughter. We are enjoying it!
I'm about 2+ hours in on Gamepass. It's OK as a time passing game.
I still can't wait to get it despite certain flaws. I do hope these developers get the chance to flesh it out later if they ever make another
Looks neat! Nice review Marty. Cant seem to find it on steam though, and that's my PC games platform of choice :-/
It's Epic exclusive.

Xbox exclusive
You can get it on windows games or get game pass for PC
what's the runtime for this and is it worth going through to the end?
0:19 in he mentions it's about 6 hours long.
how long is this game?
Reviewer said it took them 6 hours.
7 to 8 hours according to other reviewers
thank you must have missed that
Caught my interest and it's on gamepass so win win.
Great review and speaks exactly to my problems with the game. It worries me that their last 2 games have been complete misses for me. Makes me worry about SteamWorld Headhunter :(
Ima give it a shot
That's a pity. It sounds they had a really good game but ran out of time or money 80% of the way into it. Good enough is fine, but I can see a better game being possible here.
Even if the review is critical of the game, being 6 hours long and on Gamepass makes me want to at least try it. As the art design of the game looks quite interesting.
But. yeah. It doesn't look like a game that I would buy for 30 bucks.
That's kind of a shame...The Steamworld games were really good, IMO. Sounds like The Gunk needs more game in its game, at least from the few reviews I've watched/read so far today.
Sounds like Cornshaq
Ya just playing it on game pass now and I can already see what you mean.
Pity there's not more to this; looked to have promise.
That’s unfortunate. It looked like a neat game, but if the art style is really all it has going for it then I’ll pass. I still haven’t played the SteamWorld Quest.
It's on sale now, and I'm deleting it from my wishlist. Thank you for saving me $8.74.
£29.99 for 6 hours?!
What a disappointment, I was really hoping Image & Form could knock it out of the park since they've done so well so far but sadly it sounds like it's still a little beyond them to play in the AAA or Double-A space.
even with all these problems I still want to support this game and the developers its better than giving my money to EA or Activision/Blizzard that is for sure
It’s about 2 lesbians that landed on a alien planet, one of them goes around hoovering up gunk
Looks meh.
