Thoroughly enjoyed this game. Gameplay is great and fun and not over convoluted with extra collectibles to pad the game play time. Mostly linear and to the point, which is great. Hope to see more in this franchise.
Its a fun little adventure game thats easy to play, doesn't overstay its welcome and has pretty good ambient music. It's a good wind down sort of game. A decent treat.
Just downloaded on Game Pass on PC. Just the kind of game been looking for. Small project, beautiful artwork and visuals and easy gameplay with I'm hoping a decent story.

People who think everything should be free or part of a subscription are won’t fork out money to games that aren’t on game pass unless it’s a major release they’ve been waiting for.

@@Lock2002ful I’m not in on the financials but I believe the devs get a good pile of cash to agree to put their game on gamepass. Enough from what I’ve heard rumored to keep a studio like this afloat. So despite the maybe “stolen” sales, they do get paid.
For a title put together by a team of 25 people. I'm impressed with their work. Xbox series owners appear to have something nice to look forward to playing

The caves and platforming remind me of "Alundra 2" for PSX. "Alundra 2" with modern 3d graphics and improved control would be a massive hit on the market. "Digital foundry" should seriously consider making a DF Retro video about "Alundra" and "Alundra 2".

@@geegoo , in Bulgarian language, quotation marks (a.k.a. quotes) are commonly used to distinguish the name of every official brand, company, government department, street, film, book, video game etc. They are also used to quote somebody, as well as as an irony marking which actually means the opposite. However, while brand names like "Sony" or "Playstation" are put into quotation marks when used separately, the latter are not used when the brand's name is combined with the model itself, such like Sony Playstation 5.

A cool game with interesting design. Not much replayability though, so once you're done you probably won't ever play it again. But if this is the quality to expect from this team, MSFT needs to throw money at them and let them loose. We could get some classic material from people like this

Lets also give these developers some slack here since the Gunk is their first 3d game.
All games should have the option to turn off motion blur. I can't stand blur

I’m glad you liked it so much. For me it was game I completed in 3 sittings I liked the artistic and graphical style. The game play was to me something between slower sightseeing (closer to walking sims) with some simple combat and puzzles in this regards it was mostly a relaxing experience. The story was just OK for me. Final score good game I’m glad I played it.
I get this is not everyone cup of tea but I was a bit disappointed that many reviews were rather critical of the game.
Among a lot of open world games, I often find myself searching for shorter more condense experiences, and as I mentioned Gunk was a good experience in this category.

Really enjoyed this one. The world is really pretty and colorful, the story simple and straightfoward. Exactly the kind of game i need when i don't have as much time available as once before.
I have this on my Series S with an LG Oled 65” CX, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Though I really love the scrutiny with which DF examines these differences (I am a subscriber after all), in reality you have to really dig deep to even see any differences as they are often subtle and minute, and things that ‘jar’ are mostly in the eye of the beholder anyway.
The Gunk is sure a fitting name for this game. It’s a pretty boring game. Everything is barely mediocre. No personality, no outstanding features or gameplay mechanics. Strange they released it like that, it’s like they just wanted to get this little mistake out, instead of wasting more time on it.

Yep, once you have downloaded and played some of the greats, there really is not much else. Most of the best games and older games, you still have pay to play from the MS store.....unfortunately. But I'm still fan.
Started the Gunk a couple days ago. Played a bit each day and I’m liking it. Not bad, not great but still very playable.
I played it on the cloud (Xbox One X)and runs smooth with no issues (60fps).
The story is not "wow", but the graphics and gameplay are so good.
When you play on cloud it makes no difference it being on One X or One S. The cloud gaming on any Xbox uses some tweaked version of the Series S for settings. The One X natively runs this game locked at 30fps.
Cool, i'll check it out when they add an option to turn off the horrible camera motion blur.
Completely by luck I found a PS5 at EB games and now I need to be lucky and find a series X! Some real gems I'm missing out on

Beat it 100% in about 4.5 hours. Really fun little bite-sized adventure game with some decent puzzles and platforming. I think what this needs is a full fledged sequel on a larger scale.

Nice chill game. Almost felt like the studio dipping their toes in. I think they could really have a bright future with some cool games if they keep pushing and creating. The visuals of the game are what relly pulled me in and then how relaxing the game was kept me coming back.

I had a lot of fun with The Gunk. Yes, as stated it’s not going to be a graphical showcase, but it has a nice style with lots of color and style to overcome most of the issues. The game’s inventive and creative, and thankfully is not yet another 40 hour slog.

It's kinda crazy that the game can't even hit 60fps below 1080p on the Series S right?
Optimization is a word thrown about too easily... but its something to keep in mind when it comes to various indie studios. (basically, indie studios sometimes have a harder time optimizing a game well due to their small teams) Of course, a big AAA studio is no better prediction for good optimization... as Ubisoft has shown us repeatedly.
But yeah, given that the PC version of the Gunk can run fairly poorly too... its pretty obvious the Gunk devs didn't do a very good job optimizing for all the platforms involved. (Mainly seemed to focus on XSX, as it runs the best there)
It's definitely a bit concerning, considering the low texture resolution, fairly low poly assets used. I mean yes, it's Unreal Engine 4, but that's proven to run very well with just a bit of care taken in development. I'm also a bit perplexed at calling a 25-people studio "small" and so excusing any issues with "but it's a small indie title". It's really not.

Well... yeah, few people would call a 20 or so person team to be a large studio... and its clear this title didn't have a large budget. So yeah, the indie moniker fits?
It looks like the team started development on the Gunk in 2018 (when it seems Thunderful Publishing became Thunderful Group and took on the project) and released it in late 2021. (also this appears to be the first time this studio attempted a 3d game, moving on from their 2d Steam-Dig titles) So all 'n all, it never seemed to be an ambitious project from the get-go.
I'm hoping they get to learn from this projects pitfalls, get a larger budget for their next game and perhaps even get to hire more employees. (Or get a support studio in Vietnam like the Kena people did)
The gunk on my Series X is pretty nasty and it keeps getting bigger every week.
The Gunk is a really good game, its the perfect game pass title. I hope it does well enough to warrant a bigger and more fleshed out sequel.
For some reason I got confused and thought The Gunk and Grounded were the same game 🤦♂️
Now I know this is Image and Form's first 3D adventure, I'll definitely be picking it up.
The Gunk reminded me of an old N64 title (in a good, Jet Force Gemini, nostalgic kinda way).

This was a charming game. Took me 5 hours to complete 100%.
Microsoft should snap this up as an exclusive. Then go really hard on investing into this studio, this is a real gem and I can see the potential sequel being a big hit.
I put a few hours into this game and I love it, but I must admit that I don't think it's a particularly great singleplayer adventure game. You definitely see that it's made by a smaller studio that still needs to gather some experience in this regard. At this point I don't think that they would be able to release something to the level of other jump and run adventure games like Psychonauts or Kena. It's definitely charming though and I must say I appreciate a lot that they used a woman of colour as their protagonist which you don't see that often in games.
Edit: I just checked and saw that they made the Steamworld games. Must admit I would have expected a bit more now gameplay-wise. I do dig the cartoony artstyle, though. (no pun intended)
@@ThaMobstarr I think it's their first 3D game actually so all the problems listed are what I expected of such a team, also speaking of Kena it's an interesting comparison to make since both teams are reletively small and their 1st 3D game project launched this year makes comparing the 2 fun. One has years of experience making 2D games and the other has experience in 3D animation but not game design, although if I had choose which team knocked it out of the park better then I'd say the team behind Kena did it better given their overall lack of game design experience.

A Lovely game to chill out from the hectic fps shooters plays great on PC too
Oh f* any game that insists on looking like a visual mess by forcing the unholy alliance of temporal and motion blurs.
I tried for 1 hour on PC and uninstalled it. Now Rift Breakers is good along with The Ascent, this was not it for me.
The game was fun. I wish there were more upgrades and abilities though.
I barely used the upgrades. I wish there were more levels like the final one because it was awesome.
Gamepass is all about allowing updates, which don't have to cost $20 each.
Just beat the game. I enjoyed it a good bit and would like to see a sequel at some point
Will be interesting to see what they do with the series s when the inevitble mid generation console upgrades come out.

hopefully there is no mid-gen upgrade - the xbox already has a more and less console and PS has a more console - but the higher ends dont really need something more, and the less xbox is nice little thing.
This game is unexpectedly good. I have thoroughly enjoyed playing it. It's a shame about the frame rate dips on the Series S though. Oh yeah, I am playing this on base XBox One so don't mind me about the frame rate problems.... BWAHAHAHAHAH!
I played it to completion on base xbox one and thought it looked absolutely gorgeous. I've recently tried it on my newly acquired Series X and apart from a silky smooth frame rate you're not really seeing anything different. I do wonder whether DF would actually notice those frame dips at all if they didn't have their analyser to tell them.
The music at 6:00 sounds amazing.
I loved the ambient music in this game. I've a benchmark video of this game on pc playing one of the later levels and that has awesome music too.
I was expecting something more, the game is really flat, low interaction, very repetitive mechanics, below average level design and really easy platforming. It's enjoyable if you're searching something "relaxing" but for me was really not that fun.
I played on Xbox Series X at my living room and on Series S on my Bedroom. Beautiful on both.
Thought it was a lovely little game.

With Series S, Dynamic 1440p is just a new marketing term for 900p.
And people keep falling for it. 900p with Temporal Anti Aliasing is a blurry mess, but good luck explaining Series S fans that.

I hardly noticed the dips into the 50 fps when I played on my series s. Except for 1 or 2 times in the game but it wasn't bothering 🤷.
I m playing on 60hz TV so it should be a huge problem I theory 🤔.

Very relaxing and fun game. I loved the laid back nature of it all, the visuals are very pretty (Series X for me) and the music 🎶 is wonderful.

I really enjoy the game. Fantastic. Relaxing. Decent story. No bloat. Simple. No modern pandering and silliness. Good stuff. It's a great game to play a little before bed or after work when just wanna chill. Could maybe use a little more depth and maybe a story with more characters but meh. I liked the exploration and level design. Graphics are great along with gunk physics too.
I liked the design of the game, but the weird stiff animations turned me off - enough that I only played it around 20 minutes. Psychonauts 2 just set the bar too high, I guess.
This game had some weird performance issues for me on PC, but it was a nice little game that looks gorgeous. A shame it really isn't getting that much attention. Got lost in the end of the year shuffle I guess..
The protagonist and the lady she talks to on the radio are intolerable. Their chitchat and banter is so obnoxious and annoying.
The game was great but felt odd to be playing such a good looking game in SDR I thought my Xbox was playing up.

Solid, cute game. I'm not much of a gamer and usually enjoy something a bit more mindless but cool-looking, as this mostly is. Though it gets a bit repetitive at times (and definitely on-the-nose), there was still.enoigh to keep me going to the end. I rarely finish games, so that may say something.
I liked this game.
I did notice the heavy motion blur. I know John would think this sacrilege, but i wished i could turn it off.
I thought the visuals were really nice, but i found the color palette to be a little washed out, and dark areas were really crushed. That could have been resolved if given control of your flashlight. I think the game would have benefited from HDR.
Still, mostly minor gripes. It was a fun surprise

Yeah, I had been considering picking this up, but knowing there's no toggle for the "motion sickness" blur is a hard pass for me. Migraine city.
O que me irritou em The Gunk foi o número de loadings no Series S. Isso não condiz com o esperado para a nova geração, no entanto espero que exista uma continuação e novos biomas. É sempre bom ver uma nova IP em terceira pessoa surgindo, algo que o Xbox sempre precisou melhorar em sua line-up.

this is like the Medium and Grounded all over again. I have no idea what games you guys are playing but this game was not memorable or visually attractive. If this wasn't an Xbox exclusive this would be another game forgotten in the mix of quality games.

Image & Form said they wanted to go with the stronger hardware to make this game, so they chose to not make a PS5 version. Yet somehow they got it to run on Series S? Hope that game pass money was worth it.

Was fun little game only 4.5 hours to finish with exploration. I do agree with whats said in the video
I quite liked the game. Played on a mix of S and X consoles the flaws in this video were rarely seen, I guess when you're deliberately searching you'll more easily see them, but just playing the game for fun you'll barely notice a bad thing. Its quite short, but it could perhaps have been a little bit shorter, getting rid of a bit of the filler.
Really enjoyed this game, the ost is definitely my favorite part.
Digital Foundry is the main preview of a game before i buy that specific game. So i know for sure i didn't wasted the money.
The art style, Fidelity, and colors in this game are quite the eyesore in my opinion. It looks like an OG Xbox game with higher resolution.
I hear alot of reviews panning this game. Sure it's not AAA game and that's ok. I really liked this game and I hope it get a sequel.

I started playing this through the cloud streaming to give it a shot. I figured I'd complete a task or two. Honestly the game didn't grab me until just before I was about to stop playing. I said one more task to see what was going on. Then I just downloaded the game and played till it was done. It's a good little casual game that kept me interested and had just enough variety to keep things moving. Worth playing through for a relaxing time (save one or two areas where the combat got a little more complex towards the end).
Been playing this for the last few days and I’m loving. Very chill and relaxing game and I’m enjoying the story.
This game was such a surprise. Reminded me of Beyond Good and Evil.
Nice wee game and just about the right length but the chatter did get annoying at times especially talking over the credits.
The game did look fantastic at times like when heading towards the Garden.
Such a shame they don't provide a slider for motion blur. Motion blur can really piss off a LOT of people, it must be configurable if you put it in your game.
