I actually like when games encourage you to try different builds, but limiting the progress of the game behind it may be too much. Still, seems a game I would enjoy, nice review!
I am actually really enjoying this. At first, I didn't realize that leveling up one form unlocks more, I just thought you unlock more as the game progresses. So I just used a form I liked, the ranger. Then I realized I needed a form I didn't have for a side quest, so I ended up walking back and forth in two areas(for respawn), grinding my other forms. Plus I had to grind a bit because one of the bosses murdered me quite a few times. Finally finished that boss last night so back on track!
Short and precise review thumbs up from me. But I wouldnt necessarily say the game having you preform tasks to progress in a form is counter intuitive to playing how you want. Rather they are having you try a specific task in a form forcing you to better understand the strengths, and weaknesses of that form. While this may seem frustrating I think it allows the user to have a much more rounded experience with each form. You may find/think of even cooler skill combinations that you may not have even thought of had you not tried certain skills in the way the game forces you to try in order to advance in that form.
Thank you for the review. The form system and charm of the art and writing originally put this on my radar, but after hearing on how the primary gameplay loop actually works I think I’ll just try it on game pass first instead. Maybe I missed it but I didn’t hear much in the way of the game’s story. Was it something just not worth talking about?
Thanks for the comment! I didn't have enough word count left to dig deeper into the story. Short answer is it's fun and full of silly characters. I liked what I saw of it over 13 hours.
Me and my gf are having a blast with this game. It’s such a pleasant surprise, and surprisingly difficult in areas. It’s easy enough for her to hang, but difficult enough to let me flex my skills from time to time.
The leveling system sounds terrible. Sounds like it's a "Great, you've leveled up your skills, but you don't need them anymore and you'll have to start over again with a different skill"
Requiring the character to constantly try new systems and the player to embrace their weakest skill sets (eg newest, least understood/ not-yet-intuitive mechanics) to gain XP is a solid concept.
If executed correctly. The game was fun, but some of the missions they give to level up new forms feel like a chore. A lot of the form missions are also almost extremely hard to complete if you deal too much damage. For example, one of the mission is to “kill 30 stunned enemies”, but it takes a few hit to proc the stuns, and weaker enemies might have died before you can stun it. Not often in an RPG where upgrading damage is harmful to progression. What the game also doesn’t tell you right away is that progression on these forms are also soft lock from reaching max until you completed a certain main story quest, so you can’t exactly grind with them either.
It does have an ending. There are dungeons and you can technically replay them (and they are procedurally generated), but there is a point at which the game ends, and you have to move on to new game +, or play from the very last save point.
Scaled leveling in this game. So you level up but don't get any stronger. There's almost no point in leveling. If you grind the enemies level up with you. I wouldn't have bought the game if I knew. Nobody mentions the scaled leveling in any reviews anywhere. 6/10
I cant deal with the leveling system its dragging and not satisfiing ,the world is full if enemys just killing them wont give u anything i was not aware kf this at the beginning lf the game ,when some one told me how to level up thats when the problem started for me dragging , leveling 1 caracter is fun 3 4 5 but to many is dragging the game Collect mana with 1 caracter us fun 2 maybe 3 is pushing it 4 no thanks Art and animation is a 10/10
I just could not deal with the leveling up system that is what holding me back doesnt make any sense the game feels like a mobile game it also makes u do things ibdont want to like upgrading all or most of the caracters just to get the stars but i dont want to so... My story end s If i can replay it with cheats just to get all the stars i wil if not than i wont 65x2 stars is just to much to spend another 10+ hours with boring dungeons and music ,this game is all about the art work and animation is 10/10 Kill 50 baddies with bom first time doing that is fun second time maybe third time ?? Times multiple caracters ?!!
Such a let down after the fantastic Guacamelee! series, simple, repetitive combat in tiny, lackluster procedural dungeons. The rest of the game has charm, but not enough to cancel out the base gameplay loop being bad.
Think I will be passing on this one after hearing about some of the design stuff that just sounds like more of a hinderance than an interesting new take...
No. You treat the game as if it's Smash TV but better. You have the option to fully rpg it and grind the first level, thusly unlocking a bunch of stuff. Then by the time the Grand Castle is an option, you're 3 levels higher.
This game frustrated me when i played it I rage quit at the first fricking area because the amount of enemies felt unfair And then my Dad had a go at playing the game, and he got way more progress than me- but then he also quit after a while because he thought the game was too grindy

Super happy to read that! I hope you do enjoy it.
“Nobody saves the world” - we’ll see about that

This game is totaly worth a buy in my opinion. I've had a blast with it and at over 20 hours in I still have plenty more to do!!
I've seen 2 vastly different reviews of this, 1 positive and 1 negative. Curious to try it out and see what I think.
Just starting it seems pretty fun, and these arent my normal style of games
what do you think?
@@fIorisss I liked it, but only ended up playing 3 or 4 hours, I need to go back and play more.
Gotta try this bad boy. Being from the people behind Guacamele is all the recommendation I need. Thanks for the review, Jesse.
Is online co-op same screen only?
I'm just glad there's new music by Jim Guthrie, which would've been my biggest selling point anyway.
The music is very enjoyable. Didn't have the word count to fit that in though.

Shame that this seems flawed, the art style is awesome ☺️ certainly worth a go on Gamepass I imagine

Just picked this up on PS5. Super hard to put down

GamePass coming in clutch once again
I always check to see if the time of the review is past 3 minutes : (
It is WITHIN 3 minutes, so I count it as a win.

Might've missed it from the review, but is this a roguelike or does it have a story and ending?
There is a thin story, but it’s mostly just set up to hack and slash on the next dungeon
It does have an ending. There are dungeons and you can technically replay them (and they are procedurally generated), but there is a point at which the game ends, and you have to move on to new game +, or play from the very last save point.

Just heard of this game yesterday.
Thanks for review, I was curious if the issues I saw others saw.
if the attacks were omnidirectional and not just up down left right think this game would have shined better.
It looks easier to track the characters than something like Diablo 3 and that was a blast multiplayer on Switch with my friend.
I loved this game. Played it co-op.

Jeez, this game got review bombed. Looks decent though.
I don’t know why it got bombed, I’m having a blast with it
seems rly tedious
Man i really hate it when games pseudo force you to play/grind different playstyles. Same issues with FFT series and Cattslevania/Bloodstained.
love me a good top down hack and slash
gamepass such a pro consumer
Looks like a bit of a step down from Guacamelee
Honestly this game is just another "great idea, had design"
I got buyers remorse just not my kinda game i guess everyone else likes it

You lost me at "procedurally generated dungeons" :/

talk about the story
