as a hobbyist game dev, the fact that his was done by a solo developer is amazing. Hats off!
Reminds me of my efforts to decipher NES manuals and on-screen instructions when I was a child and didn't understand english.
Same
The visual style to me looks like "what if Death's Door, but colors?"
Been excited for this one, the best thing about this past Game Awards was the release date reveal for Tunic! Cool to see the camera shift based on entering hidden passages or shortcuts - really enjoyed something similar in Death's Door. Just don't see enough of that in isometric titles IMO. Definitely buying this after work, hope the devs get a ton of success! (Side note: the map design looks spectacular)
Dev, no S, it's pretty much a one-man band operation which is why it's taken so long
Nice! Kinda figured once I saw the steam name listed for the developer. Makes sense, as some of my favorite games have been solo devs. It's insane the level of talent those people have.
I wonder if KC is contractually obligated to use the term "recursive" when describing the nature of the game so that the term can gain traction. Somewhere Yahtzee must be smirking
It's a good name for the genre, and it might not be 100% accurate(i think there was a comment on the Slightly Civil War video explaining it) i think it should be used by more people.
@@ArthurDraco how is it actually recursive though?
Oh? Is Tunic finally out? I've been anticipating this one!
Same… no clue it was already out!
Did you just said "recursive elements" at the start?
The Rollercoaster from "This looks rad" to "X-Box and Steam Exclusive"
Sounds like another game to add to my Steam collection.
Thank you for the review!
PSA: Tunic is in Gamepass!
seriously, gamepass is so good!
Not surprised that KC did this one. Loved the demo for this game, and excited to see the full launch.
Edit: Great review as always, KC!
Looks great! I love the art style - especially the lighting. Nice review KC!
Every day since completing this game it has grown on me. The aha! moments turned this game from a 7 to a 9. Reflecting and reminiscing on those moments has turned it to a 10. I’m so happy this game exists.
Wonderful review! This looks like fun. Also, nice use of recursive.
had almost exactly the same feeling of wonder and satisfaction of exploration as in FEZ, great game
Wish this was on the switch. Seems like a good game to play relaxed on portable mode
Give it time. All indie games eventually find their way to the Switch... though it'll probably be $30 again.
its called a steam deck and it doesn't suck =)
@@axioms22 Sadly, my country's currency does suck and the deck is VERY expensive here
Tunic, a MASTERPIECE.
I think I can handle some slightly clunky combat if you get to experience such a cute world otherwise.
First glowing review of a game I feel is up my alley. I have to give this one a try
I love the idea of a game that uses a language nobody knows.
Once KC mentioned this, I got way more hyped (if possible). Reminds me of years ago, working out the alphabet and number systems in Fez.
@@smashbrandiscootch719 I've been playing it for a bit and I just beat the siege engine, it seems like the game gives you plenty of hints through the booklet and you can piece a lot of what you need to do. At least it's been that way so far, idk if that'll change later on.
And it seems it's in Game Pass too.
What exactly do you mean by the phrase "recursive elements"? Is that like.... replay value? A game within a game? Backtracking? I'm unclear.
Roguelike = recursive
@@cooljay7387 I thought it was their term for 'Soulslike'
yeah it's shorthand we've adopted to describe Souls game elements like respawning enemies and retrieving lost currency/XP
The Legend of Zelda: A Short Hike
Game looks very interesting, would of loved to play it on switch given its zelda inspiration
Given Finji's support for the Switch, and the Switch support for Indies, I would be surprised if it's not released on it later this year
Probably depends on how well the PC release does
Oh hey, I heard about this a while ago. Completely forgot about it.
This looks *very* Death's Door
exactly what I was going to say
Tdlr: it's good 👍
This game is awesome, I'm loving it.
It’s so good I stopped playing Elden Ring just so I could play it instead
It is also on gamepass
Great overview
I really wish that Tunic learned the language over the course of the game. Don't mind being puzzled at the start but I hate if a game leaves either me, or the game's character, puzzled at the end still.
Learning the language was one of my favourite parts of the game. It's a whole new experience to go through the world and the manual again once you learn to actually read all the text.
You don't need to read the language to get either of the endings. One of the puzzles for 100% completion requires you to be able to read, which you can decipher yourself once you have most of the manual, or use online help for.
Ohhhhhh I want this now
Shame this isn't on gamepass since I'm kinda on the fence if I'd enjoy it enough.
It is on Game Pass. Launches today.
@@theescapist oh thanks for the correction
I'll definitely give it a go!.
That screen shake on every weapon hit. I know why games do this but I hope you can disable it.
Monument Valley
meets
The Legend of Zelda?
How is this not on Switch? Dammit Nintendo. Well time to buy is now!
probably a timed exclusive
Looks similar to Death's door. Which one is better?
I haven’t even played this one but let me just say deaths door is my favorite isometric adventure game PLEASE LLAY IT
I hope you checked out both! I loved them both
It's in gamepass? An interview with the developer himself said it wouldn't be on gamepass but I'm downloading it from there right now?
It is !
So this isn’t just vaporware. Well if that isn’t a surprise.
Thank God it's on game pass spent way to much money on games lately lol
I really can't vibe with the combat in this. I love the Souls games so I was pleased at first, but there's something about the rhythm and responsiveness that just won't click, I find it a chore even when I'm doing well.
Beat the game, combat is good but nothing outside of swords and hook shot are really worth it. Game takes a hard dive into puzzle game territory near the end that I'm not sure everyone is gonna like. Ending is a unfulfilling as well (both of them).
Was really hoping this was a switch game.
Blame xbox
No PS?
This has been on my Steam wishlist for like 4 years, haha. I figured it was vaporware, TBH.
Ironically, now I'm not sure I want it anymore. My backlog is huge; I even have Death's Door and haven't played it yet.
Doling out the instruction manual that way sounds obnoxious too. Fuck that. Just tell me how to play the damn game...
freaking finally
Bonito
I get the feeling watching this that this game takes it self way to seriously and meta.
This game is gorgeous but flawed. It is just another souls like and I just don't have time to deal with that
'Fraid this game sucks. Just beat it 100% fully.
The Link stand-in is right-handed? 2/10
Curious about this game but having played it I really don’t get it.
What exactly are you supposed to do? No, seriously! There game gives you no objective. What is your purpose as the protagonist? What am I fighting for? So far I’ve been given a stick and left to wander aimlessly. The ‘text’ being in an indecipherable language is not world building, its just frustrating.
I get some games prefer to be hands-offs and leave the player to find their own path but there’s a limit to what is workable. You need some direction in the early game to establish the mechanics and what you as the player are trying to do. This game does not have that.
I have to recant this now. I gave the game ‘one more go’ and found the sword. Been engrossed in the game ever since.
I think your point is still valid largely.
Yet, the trees still look like shite.
If only Nintendo could make a Zelda game this good
This game is trash
I heard good things about this game being one of the top indies you must play(so I did since it was on gamepass) and after experiencing it for myself I can see why.
The music is beautiful and calming.
Now the combat can be a bit frustrating since you need to press LB (in Xbox)to change weapons or use consumables. I wish there was a better way to implement inputs while in combat without going into the menu and switching your shortcuts constantly. I also experienced getting stuck in the environment quite a few times and sometimes the path wasn't very clear when going under hidden areas.
The blue gem took me the longest to uncover and the last boss was brutal
LOL.
Other than that exploration is amazing in this game and the manual has everything you need to figure out your journey
Absolutely a gem.
i personally found the combat to be nearly perfect, lock on is mid, im not sure why. The bosses are Perfect imo, not dark souls level of difficulty, but not exactly easy either. Learning the boss move sets came quicker than tradtional souls-like bosses.
A Pass for me,i dont have time to search three hours for a way to the next Level.
