I did the exact same thing during that first BIG gunk section. I spent waaay to much time meticulously trying to clear all of the gunk, only to find out none of it mattered.
I actually think it's a unique game. My daughter (aged 7) absolutely loved it, and I had fun looking at her playing it. It's true that the game is relatively short and easy, but it's also quite fun and addictive. Personally, I found it very relaxing, almost meditative. The experience is somewhat similar to Firewatch. A gorgeous game that offers experience more than actual challenge.
She love lost in random really recommend it.
Unique doesn't automatically mean good though. I wouldn't call it unique personally though. The cleaning gunk has a neat visual to it, but it's not original as a game mechanic.
I agree with the rest of the sentiment though. It's competent enough and very approachable. Not all games need to be all action all the time and super challenging to be worth something to someone.
A joyous game with a great relationship between the two friends. I found it incredibly refreshing compared to most games out there.
The most ok game of the year for me. Doesn’t do anything especially bad but doesn’t do anything exceptional. It was still enjoyable I’d say just to chill and play through. But yeah 6.5 is about where I’d sit it. Just super ok. Definitely worth a gamepass download and play through.
I absolutely do not understand the concept of the “okay” game. To me, if a game is t actively fun, it’s bad. It’s failing at the one thing i am using it for. If a game is only “okay”, my time is better spent doing anything else and therefore it’s a bad game.
@@JazGalaxy I mean it’s the same concept as an okay movie or an okay meal. Things can just be okay lol that’s why C grades exist in school.
And by that logic saying something is “okay” also means it’s a good since it didn’t do anything bad. So it must be a good game.

@@BoundByGundams But he does make a good point. If a meal or movie is just okay, then you’ll likely never eat that same meal or watch that same movie ever again, because your time is spent better elsewhere. If the majority of reviewers and users call The Gunk as merely “okay” then it’s probably wise to put The Gunk somewhere at the bottom of your backlog and maybe play it one day when you got absolutely nothing left to do (basically never).
@@turanx0 I agree with that. I’ll more than likely never play The Gunk again and I wouldn’t have missed anything if I hadn’t played it, but it’s not like I didn’t enjoy myself while playing it. I just didn’t enjoy myself to the extent I would have playing a “good” game I suppose. I just don’t think it’s fair to label games as definitively bad or good when there really are games that are just okay lol they’re not necessarily worth your time but if you end up playing it, you wouldn’t have wasted time either.
Blood really nailed that one and I'm glad he was "harsh" on it as I'm quite tired of seeing how reviewers can be lenient with mediocre games sometimes. Doesn't mean it shouldn't be played, but I just completely agree that it doesn't do anything particularly bad, but it also doesn't do anything particularly well. They really could've spiced it up a little more.
I'd say 7.5 - It's a cool game, perfect length, could use more mechanics, but enjoyable to play
This video of the character sucking up the gunk was giving me anxiety lol especially at 2:55. I feel like I would I have no idea where I am or what to do in these levels. Thanks for the review
Just finished this and I'd give this a 7.5
I really enjoyed this atmospheric, mystery adventure for it's environments, light platform-puzzling, voice acting and music.
As a main draw, clearing gunk was satisfyingly meditative.
Wow genuinely surprised how low this came in for Blood, I knocked it out at 100% at just under 6 hours and would have landed around an 8 from my experience.
Yeah finished it yesterday and really enjoyed the experience. I would have gone with an 8 aswell.
Really enjoyed this one. It did what it did well, fun to play over the break.
7/10, the presentation was great, but gameplay was overly simple and some of the writing & voice acting was a bit suspect
A lot of games need to reel it back on the constant talking and banter. This game just didn't have the writing or voice actors to have so much of it on top of that.

In my opinion, 6.5 even feels a bit generous. It's not without its merits and I
enjoyed it for about 4 of the 6 hours I spent completing the quest. Core gameplay is fun and a bit addicting for a time. And visually it's better than one might anticipate with some outdoor environments looking pretty lush in spots. And it's got some interesting lore going for it.
However, a few things bogged the experience down for me the more I played. Among these: confusing level design coupled with the lack of a map or navigation markers, dodgy camera, whimpy combat, floaty jumping mechanics, and so-so voice acting. I could go on, but suffice it to say, these thing wore on me. And I was rather happy to be done with it once the credits rolled.
Unfortunately I will remember this game more for what it didn't do well than the things it did. Perhaps this will be the starting point for a more refined offering from this dev in the future. I'd be interested to see how they evolve and grow as a studio.

I watched ACG's review on this and he had similar things to say. Then went to play and finish the game and found that I actually liked it a lot. Sure it doesn't revolutionize anything but I thought it was still very enjoyable.
Definitely not the best Swimming In 7 but honestly, maybe it's better that way. A good pallet cleanser.
Really loved this game but i do understand the review, though personally its was for me a great experience with great calming vibes, the characters were so good!
Do wish it was longer and had more enemies before the ending though.
Only thing i disagree with is cleaning up gunk not being enjoyable, i think for people that enjoy cleaning or clearing anything its gonna feel very good.

Wow, this is the first time I’ve really disagreed with an EZA review. 6.5 is well below where I’d put it. This is a super fun game. Playing on gamepass and was pleasantly surprised. If I had to score it, it’d be an 8
It's a unique game, which isn't that common - and it's on game pass. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise, but I tried it and liked it.
Fun short game took me about 3 hours and well worth my time. If you have £20 or gamepass give it a go

This is the first time I’ve seen or heard of this title and it immediately reminds me of Kena Bridge of Spirits albeit in a sci fi setting. Would I be far off?
It does feel a bit like Kena with the whole "corruption clearing" and restoring nature mechanic. Kena is way more polished though
I had a blast, took me about 6 hrs. I have gamepass so it felt right at home for me. 7.2469er for me.
I really liked the voice acting
They should have leaned more into how fun it is to clean the gunk, less into the couples dynamic.
Is the motion blur an option to turn off? If so, I would suggest capturing footage without it as its very distracting.

I've had a fun time so far my couple hours in. Only issue I have so far is some of the voice acting is a bit off.

This game was a little bit shorter than I was expecting
That grass animating at lower framerate than the rest of the game really irks me. :/ Maybe it doesn't do that on PC?

Gostei bastante de jogar The Gunk, entendo que o jogo é praticamente um Indie, mas apesar disso devo dizer que o número de loadings me irritou um pouco. Tantas telas de carregamento não condizem com o hardware atual presente no Series X ou S. No final foi legal curtir uma história nova, ver uma nova IP surgindo e tentando se estabelecer. Espero que uma continuação exista e que receba mais investimento, pois seria legal ver novos planetas e novos biomas.

That voice acting isn't very good. They sound like podcasters.
It was a nice wee game but I actually thought it was about an hour too long if anything.
Also the constant chatter got annoying fast and your partner at the ship was pretty unlikable not willing to help the greater cause (and the story was pretty guff overall). Also talking all over the credits?! Who's great idea was that?
But it was a nice looking game with some striking scenes and chill music. If you got Gamepass it is a no brainer.
Well, it's a game for kids, and they seem to love it :P

@@SBandy I did, and thought it was okay. Pretty'ish, but shallow and the combat was disappointing. But then my younger cousin aged 12 played it and loved it, which is quite an achievement considering he's ADHD as hell so that was some peace and quiet. Money well spent >:P

I was thinking more of some of the bad language used when referring to kids and to be clear I did enjoy the game, I just saw a few flaws.
@@SBandy It's ESRB 10+, the language really isn't that bad, especially considering kids hear much, much worse things on TV, the internet and especially at school :P

When EZA does 'Best Remaster/ Remake' for GOTY I hope they consider Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX. I feel the world forgot it existed.
I loved this game, it's a puzzle game and I think that it stays fresh throughout the experience in spite of not introducing a lot of new mechanics.
If you are a fan of old school puzzle platformers like I am then check this one out. This is more like classic Tomb Raider --- Lara Croft never got new abilities in those games but each new level made made the same actions you'd been doing throughout worth it because it was all about figuring out spaces and solving room sized riddles.
I think The Gunk is a great game.
6.5 is a little Harsh. I can see people either falling in love with it or being very meh. But there's not many games you can fall in love with and this is certainly one of them you can.
I enjoyed the title, did exactly what I expected, 5 hours 7/10. Thanks. Bye.

Y’all weren’t the target audience. This game is amazing to play high. My only complaint is there isn’t enough to scan after the first hour. 8/10 - easily.

Why does every game have to “reinvent” something or be something “above” the competition to be respected, enjoyed, or good? I think the whole concept of “hype” in gaming has deluted people’s idea of video games and people go into games, expecting things to be simply amazing on some level…but, there were plenty of average games back in PS2 era that were just fun and enjoyable. That was the experience. Nothing more, nothing less. But somehow we equate that to be a negative in a video game and it tarnishes the review of it.
The Gunk is set out to be just an average yet enjoyable, simple gaming experience. Stop putting things into this ONE sphere of “every game has to” …no game HAS TO do anything in particular. So far, what I played of this game…it’s a solid 7/10. And that’s not a negative. It’s just a relaxing experience. Kind of need more games like these in the mix.

I woulda loved Kena much more if it took more risks along the way. Cuz the combat, exploration, story and platforming was all very... basic.
Major difference between Kena & the Gunk? One is $40 and the other $25. And they're both 7/10 games that make sense to price them where they are.

You say Kena was a 9 but i found it a pretty ride but super safe and super shallow. Hence the 7/10, a nice looking game that we've all played before... dozens upon dozens of times.
