- "Christmas Must Be Tonight", written by Robbie Robertson, was originally recorded in 1975, but did not appear on The Band's 1975 album, Northern Lights, Southern Cross. The song was re-recorded and subsequently appeared on The Band's 1977 album, Islands. This version of the song is from that album. Robbie Robertson later recorded two versions of "Christmas Must Be Tonight", both in 1988. One version appeared on the Scrooged soundtrack in 1988; the other re-recorded version was released in 1995 on the album, Wind, Fire and Snow - Songs For The Holiday Season.
ありがとうロビー!
from Japan baby boy
I'm not very religious but something about this song brings me back when Xmas meant so much!!!
Exactly right.
Rick Danko’s magical voice was the perfect fit
RIP Robbie
Robbie says that Rick Danko was incapable of singing a bad note...he was always spot on. I never heard this before, so beautiful!
Most underrated Christmas song ever!!!!!
Not really bud only in your mind..
**YOU GOT THAT RIGHT, MY FRIEND!!
Agreed, and it's much better than many of the other Christmas songs that's out there. This song has meaning pertaining to the son of God, who was born on this earth, however is present in our spiritual lives for ever.
I very much agree!!!
Amen!
Robbie Robertson wrote a Christmas masterpiece right here, yes sir!
Absolutely 🎄Merry Christmas 🎄

Merry Christmas to all and to all Good Night!
It's a shame that they don't play this on any radio station. Yet we hear country warblers and new age panting singers. Train does a version but this is so much better. RIP guys and Merry Christmas wherever you may be.
Praise the newborn king
End of the beginning. Awesome

I'd like to say I forgot all about this song . But thanks to the Summit in Akron Ohio I got to hear it again
Hearing Rick's sweet, sweet voice again! ❤️
Catskill Mountain voice and sound ❤
Bless poor Ricky 22 years on....
I heard this song for the first time yesterday 12/23/2022 on Sirius radio. I was getting ready to change the station when I heard that it was a Christmas song done by the Band. That got my attention and I decided to listen to it. To the Band I say Thank You! Thank you for recognizing the true meaning of Christmas. I loved the fact that a rock band has the faith to produce such a great Christian Christmas song! It is a great Christmas song and I will listen to it every Christmas that I am alive. Merry Christmas to all, and especially to the members of the Band.
Robbie was jewish on his father's side. His birth name is Jaime Flugelman.
I tell people the reason you havnt hear it before is because it is too powerfull
Christmas is Pagan not Christian ...
@@danielmorehouse9116 irrelevant, Robbie Robertson wrote a Christian Christmas song. Deal with it.
I know some Canadian boys could write one beautiful Christmas song!
My new favorite Christmas song.
You are not alone. First heard it 2 days ago, and I simply cannot get it out of my mind! Merry Christmas to you!
I heard Blue Rodeo do it and it blew me away.
Well written and performed Christmas song!
The Band was truly ahead of their time!
Thanks for the memories boys!
Hopefully this will be on a Christmas movie someday
I heard this song for the first time tonight. And it is very beautiful and has the meaning of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ who died on the cross. Hallelujah price the lord
Christmas Eve, 2022. Still gets me, ebery time. Greetings again from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
This is because it's the truth and it's joyus, don't question the word of the lord, smile
I'm not a very religious person and I usually don't get choked up over a song; however, there's definitely something magical about this song, something wonderful and beautiful beyond words that keeps me coming back again and again every year. Merry Christmas everyone.
you are genuine the man was precious yes god/jesus is real
KillerFrank Merry Christmas :)
Rather than being "religious," it is best to be righteous, gained only by repentance of sin and and confession that Jesus is Lord and belief that He bled and died on a miserable cross for YOUR sins (and mine, of course). Jesus said, You must be born again (spiritually), to get into God's kingdom, since HE is a spirit. Merry Christmas, and God bless!
Merry Christmas!!!
Merry Christmas brother and to all!
The best Christmas song ever written performed by the best band ever!
A must every Christmas...
Excellent original XMas Song,...from "The" Band,...thanks!
Great song.
I'm embarrassed to say I've never heard this before. It has now been added to my Christmas playlist. Love it!
@Beverly Moore Better late than ever.
Right!!How is this not more popular? Shame on Rock Stations that don't play this. Only heard this once before and such an awesome song
Only discovered this today. I'm up to about six plays so far! What a wonderful, charming and extremely moving song. Quite possibly my new favourite Christmas song. Seasons Greetings everyone x

It's ALL about Christ Jesus, The Savior of the world. 🙌🏼
Merry Christmas from Texas Y'all 2023‼️
🙏🏻☝🏻📖 ✝️ ❤
I had not heard this song until I listened to Joan Osborne's Christmas album. Not taking anything away from The Band, nobody like them, but she did an outstanding job on this beautiful song as well.
Nice to hear Rick Danko's voice once again
ya think, try listening to the guy who wrote it.
Superb and so perfectly matches Luke 2...on this CHRISTMAS 2019

No other modern Christmas song like it,a masterpiece...
Merry Christmas,folks!
Love that folk-rockers knew enough to write and sing this great song about our Savior.
I cannot hear wonderfilled song this without my eyes leaking. I cannot sing this without my voice cracking. Truly my favorite Christmas song.
Such a good and nice Song... lately came to know and listen in 2022 only!!! Thanks to RZA Hnamte
My favorite Christmas song. Thank you The Band for this gift of music.
Totally agree
My favorite Christmas song.
WOW Just WOW
This is such a gem
Rick's singing with Robbie's lyrics - it doesn't get any better than that.
Truth.
Robbie's one of music most unappreciated song-writers
By far, this is my favorite Christmas song and I agree w/Brandon S. It is the most underrated Christmas song EVER.
Garth Hudson plays perfect on this, he was a musical genius. The Band would have been legendary without him, with him they ascend into the heavens.
Well said. Celestial...
Was? He still is.
Ronnie Hawkins found himself some good one, never will there be another.
Thank you.
I love that song
This song is amazing. The words, the beat and the group that sings it. One of my new favorites.
Here it is 2 years later. This song was buried on my computer for years, lost and forgotten. Today I found it (it found me) and I was never so moved! God bless us all!
Listening to this in 2022…..shit still bringing tears to my eyes….and I ain’t even religious,
But I’ll say this….Merry Christmas to you all!!

One thing great about youtube and XM radio. You hear music you would have never heard before. God be praised! In all things, His name lifted up!
Not Christian but just love Rick's voice and the rest of the boys

Just a great.Christmas song
Definitely a great heartfelt song. Amen 🙏
Yes… I to keep coming back to this song… it’s so so sweet…they’re so amazing! So heartfelt!❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a BAND, truly a fantastic collection of five amazing men with so much feeling in their voices and so sad that only two of them survive today...
Im not a Christian though I grew up in that faith, and I believe Jesus was a Jew studying both the Buddhist and Hindu faiths and then put his own spin on that and did a great job in doing so.
Merry Christmas one and all.
Like others here I had never heard this before. Great lyrics - "Son of a carpenter; Mary carried the light."
Thank you for all the songs, Robbie. R.I.P.
The best
Agree. Also like James Taylor's version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas".
In a world that is increasingly full of unhappiness and outright hatred, the message of this song resonates ever more deeply. Hate is an exhausting emotion. Like its wingman anger, they wear you out. They’re hard on the body, mind, and soul. We’re not meant to wallow in them. As it is written in Desiderata, “Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.”
The band,,,,God bless you for recording and singing such a beautiful, precious , and oh so timely song!!! I find it hard to stop playing it,,,,it is the holiday season,,,November of 2019 ,,,,as I wait eagerly for Christmas day, I have chosen from my collection of Christmas songs, must be chtistmas tonight to be forever one of my favorites!! Jesus is the reason for the season, as this beautifully sung song tell the world!! Thanks, band!! 😊😊😊
So so good
A favorite for many years. Thanks, Robbie, for this and so many others. RIP.
Just discovered this song, and it's everything I'd hoped for.
Probably my favorite Christmas song. My family plays it every year at our xmas eve party. We aren't even religious or anything, we just appreciate beautiful music
Hannah Lynch been listening to this for over 45 years. Still can’t get enough.
This is a Christmas song so beautiful, it should be a Hymn. 🙏
Christmas 2019 in Northern Ontario with this playing in the background...

"Christmas in Northern Ontario" - fills me with longing. "Happy New Year 2020" - from the desert in Southern California. I LOVE this song!
