I can't listen to this version very often. My face is filled with tears now, but it's joy. Levon is one of my favorite people. He was everything and he was nothing. If fame hadn't found him, I imagine there would have been great music coming from somebody's screen porch somewhere in the countryside. Thank God he did leave us these recordings though.

All this Robbie hatred is so unjustified. You see comments like "Robbie would be nothing without Levon and Rick" (not I think here but on plenty of Band videos). Well probably yes if you accept that Levon and Rick would be nothing without Robbie - the whole point of a band is that it's more than the sum of its parts. I never heard Robbie say or write a bad word about the others and the first thing he did at HoF induction was to thank them. A musician with an ego - whatever next!

Levon Helms shares his heart and soul with us when he sings. Danko too. It's a shame how bands like this fade. It's their voices that made the band the band

Commenters below continue to debate the role of Robbie Robertson. Every member of the Band was hugely talented, but there's no question Robertson was the leader. Want proof? Watch the Last Waltz-- every other musician treated Robertson as the leader. Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Ronnie Hawkins-- they all came out and addressed only Robertson, not Levon or anyone else. Joni Mitchell kissed Robertson. Eric Clapton called out to him when he got in trouble. Those aren't the kind of talents who would be fooled by a faker or self-promoter. They all agreed that Robertson's great songwriting ability, lead guitar, and ambition (while Levon and others were in a drug-induced haze) was what put the Band where they were. It's too bad that Levon (another great talent) became so bitter toward the end. To his credit, Robertson never lowered himself to that level.

The Band in their 'after years' when Robbie had left. Still without him and his excellent songwriting they would have been only a good cover band. The Band was Robbie's band and others were just jealous of his talent.

I was a freshman and 14, when the kid's mom who I carpooled with was playing Dylan. First time I had heard him. A few weeks later, on Pay Per View I saw that they were going to have the 30th Annv. Concert, convinced my parents to order it and I got to see/listen all of this.

Love the Band, and their version of this song. Unfortunately, the house band played straight 4/4 time. The Band played it in half time with Richard Manual on drums, which gave the song a whole different feel. ua-cam.com/video/BYaLUzdyWWI/v-deo.html

I never understood why Dylan did not stand up for her. She was there to honour him, for God's sake. He missed the opportunity to connect with his audience for once, by saying: '"Come on folks, she's a protest singer like I used to be, give her a chance". Instead he did nothing when they booed her away.

@@gjs9441 This was a very long time ago. So, I'm going by my memory (which sucks). Sinead was booed off closer to the beginning of the night. Kris Kristofferson met her off stage and said something like "Don't let the bastards get to you". I think there's a clip of that, that's been around. Dylan was the last artist to perform, and I don't remember him saying anything about anything. He just played 2 or 4 songs. Of everyone that night, Dylan did the worst Dylan impression. I've seen him numerous times, and he was not "on". He was probably also wasted. As much as Sinead was 100% correct about the Church, she killed her career with the SNL performance. I love her. I saw her every time she played NYC from her first till about 2005 or 2006 at the Beacon Theatre, where she was a shell of her former self.
