- This is probably the best video version of Bruce Springsteen's tribute to Levon Helm when he played The Weight at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on May 2nd, 2012.
This version is a multi cam mix with dubbed audio created by DVDDubbungGuy.
Man. I am crying from this heart-felt ode to Levon...and to Richard...and to Rick...and now to Robbie.
I wouldn't worry too much about Robbie. He died rich, while his "brothers" died broke. Robbie took 51% of the Royalties and his Lawyer, Albert Grossman, took 49%.
This is what he did to Janis Joplin, from Wikipedia: "When Grossman signed Janis Joplin and her four bandmates from Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1967, he told them he would not tolerate any intravenous drug use, and all five agreed to abide by the rule. When he discovered in the spring of 1969 that Joplin was injecting drugs anyway, he did not confront her. Instead, in June 1969 he took out a life insurance policy guaranteeing him $200,000 in the event she died in an accident.[8] His yearly premium was $3,500.[8]"
@@richardredseal3993 According to Barney Hoskyns biography of The Band they ALL made a lot of money. Some wasted it on drugs and bad money management. Besides that Levon did not die broke, and Robbie made a lot of money after The Band, composing music scores for Scorsese's movies. I love all of them, and I'm not being judgmental, I especially love Rick, but it was not Robbie's fault if they ended up broke.
@@hannejeppesen1809 it’s about the ROYALTIES and Treachery. Robbie was a Liar and a Thief. His Autobiography was a work of Fiction.
@@richardredseal3993 Barney Hoskyns biography of The Band gives a much more balanced view, it is critical of Robbie, but fair, he was not perfect, none of them were, and Levon certainly glossed over the truth about his own shortcoming and addiction in his book.
The fact that the crowd knows word to word the song shows what an impact The Band made.
I think they are even singing the harmonies in the chorus. And that is not so easy to do.
This performance was totally spur of the moment. Bruce had finished his set prior to encores and was headed down the ramp with the band when he stopped halfway & returned to the stage alone. He asked a fan down front to hand up the sign you see in the video requesting that he "Sing one for Levon". That's where the video picks up. Bruce was initially alone on the stage as he began singing but then, one by one, the band joined in with the 20,000 odd fans already singing along. Was it musically perfect? Of course not, but anyone there that night knew they had participated in one of those rare, pure, magic moments that can't be planned or manufactured. Lotta love at The Rock that night.

Bruce is known for the "what does that sign says" or "please play this song" sign, and then perform the number
thanks
Wow, thanks for that bit of the story. Explains the tingling performance. Incredible.
Brenda Wombough I imagine that emotion!!!
Wonderful comment and a wonderful moment
Not a huge Springsteen fan but as a huge fan of the Band, this was a wonderful tribute. Thanks Bruce, Levon you’re oh so missed down here!
The Band covered Bruce, here he is returning the favor. Love it.
listen to the crowd. the ultimate compliment. sung with love.
That first chorus made me cry.
The Weight is one of those songs that just has it all. Fine job from The Boss here. Lovely tribute.
What a gutsy performance and tribute
Outstanding accolades bestowed upon Levon Helm with class by Bruce
A wonderful rendition as the entire audience soon became greatness along with the perfomance of perfection
levon sang, played the drum and lead one of the great bands and delivered a sense of the song that remains unmatched to this day.
No one engages the audience like the Boss! ❤
The version on The Last Waltz stands out as one of the best versions of this song. Man, it still sends shivers up my spine. 😅
Thank you Bruce and the audience for knowing how GREAT Levoln was!!!
indeed
The Man's Name Was Levon. Have Enough Respect To Get It Right.
@@rodneyhood2269 And you shouldn't capitalise every letter in a sentence but we can all make mistakes, right?
Levon Helm use to sing a great version of Bruce's Atlantic City.
i was there that night and this was amazing - Bruce is so amazing and i love this covers almost more than his own songs....he appreciates his peers and rocks their songs.....awesome tribute
Wonderful from Bruce. Makes you wonder how many lyrics and chords he has rattling around his head when he knows other people songs and not just his own! What a gift he is to the world.
He has a teleprompter on stage for lyrics. He's used one for years.
@@krog21 ah but come on? It's still very impressive. It's not as if he's glued to it.
I don't get emotionally affected by music generally, not to that extent, but when Bruce started singing and literally everyone started singing along, they all knew every word to this transcendentally great song. What a beautiful moment, real tears.
Absolutely beautiful cover...I grew up with that song....if you ever come across a person thst doesnt know this song...They grew up in a god damn bad time...
I am more impressed with this than I thought I would be and I am Springsteen fan, so well done Bruce.
The way he jams with the audience at the end.
Goosebumps. A real moment at a concert, so lovely.
Love this. Bruce sounds like he was really fighting the emotions in the finale there. ❤
Levon was more than a drummer and a singer, he was the definition of musical integrity.
100% improvised. This is a case of Bruce picking up a song and the E-Street Band just following his lead.
Bruce Springsteen. The best live act I've ever seen! 🇮🇪
I hope all of you realize that this was an unplanned audible. No rehearsing done whatsoever.
From one legend to another! Love how the crowd is singing... if you love Bruce you love the band... standing on the shoulder of giants...
A lot of respect here. Respect for the song and Levon by Bruce and the audience.
Absolutely! I'm here in my kitchen watching this, and at the same time I'm in heaven rejoicing with Levon! Outstandingly excellent! Thanks Boss and that excellent crowd! You have made my day!
I cry uncontrollably every time I see this
Miss The Band😣
And what really shows the love for Levon: the whole audience knows the song and sings...
I Love My Man...thank You Bruce and Band for bringing that to my Realization !! Long Live Music God Loves It
Danko, Emanuel and Helm were the Band ... BUT Robbie Robertson writ all the music! Rarely acknowledged as such. Of course, the Band had the 3 most unique voices ... the Band could have done without Garth and Robbie but not Robbie's Songs!
@@Psychiatrick rude to say the band could have done without them, I think not
@@Rilez616 I sa'yed they could have done without Robbie and Garth as front men but Robbie was the poet ... that is pert near all he had as the others were very tight ... nonetheless what you sea is what you get .... also they are billed as "Americana" when they were "Canadiana" except for Lavon at the Helm ... LOL My very first album was "Tommy" by the Who ... my second was the Band's Brown Album ... I wus 13 at the time ...
@@Psychiatrick are you kidding? Garth was the secret ingredient.
What a tribute from a superstar to a legend!
+Mark Phillips So true
Yea yea !! Awesome !!
One of the great anthems of the 60's. It's not as good as the original (it would be impossible to duplicate the feeling, time, and place) but Springsteen has a way of knowing where his roots came from and how to reproduce them with soul.
Bruce giving credit where credit where it was deserved ... Hard song to cover ... seems so simple, yet so intricate ... Great Job Bruce!
I was there and the crowd singing all the words was so loud. I saw a guy with a sign for the song and said c'mon,he's not gonna play that. I forgot that Levon had passed recently.
My older Bro turned me on to The Band w/Pink Album and this awesome song back in 1971 . Bruce does it well .
Wow over 250 downvoted this piece of Art. I am speechless
Unfortunately there are
plenty of stupid people
out there . . . . . 🌷
This Man right here is a national treasure. I hope I get the chance to see him one time.
this is so awesome. i was very lucky to see the band in concert as a young kid and bruce does them well. thank you bruce
This was a very strong show of the first US leg (just behind DC). I remember that this song got the biggest ovation of the night.
if that don't give you the chills, or a tear in the eye. wheeew
+BJ Ethier That song gives me a tear in the eye at the best of times! This was marvellous!
love it !!!
Madrugada
The goosbumps tell it all......
This is something! Lots of love for Levon,we all miss him. Absolutely love this. Thanks Boss.
The crowd really into it
I think we should make this song the anthem of the world
god bless levon and god bless bruce. wish i were there, at this show, and wherever levin may be.
A living legend singing a legendary song. Just great!
One word brillant.. go Bruce .. love you x
Bruce is one of the musicians out there. His music is history
I believe the people criticizing Bruce's pronunciation of Mr. Helms name. He was using his given birth name Lavon. The industry made him change his first name. Happens all the time. SO Bruce was ACTUALLY showing him great respect.
Good one Bruce, you are the Boss all right
Awesome tribute to Levon by The Boss + E St Band RIP Brother nobody can sing it like you
It's a beautiful song...Bruce!!!!
Wow! RIP Levon, Rick and Richard.
tears tears tears from japan with love
My favorite singer covering my favorite song.
Damn even the audience sounded good! I saw him 9/2/12 in Philly
RIP Robbie Robertson.
I love Levon so much....
Even "The Boss" has to defer to the great Levon Helm....that little boy who grew up in Turkey Scratch, Arkansas was unequalled on the drummers who also did vocals....Levon, RIP my brother from Arkansas
It gave me chills, Bruce.
Thank you Bruce for the great words for Levon, To Levon and the band , you are missed
Love love this❤
Awesome, awesome crowd participation !!
Kick ass performance.
Takamine guitars are such workhorses. I love that Bruce plays them.
God bless Bruce. God Bless Levon Helm.
Gives me chills.
I love you, Bruce Springsteen, because you always know and acknowledge the best and most precious of the art that kept and keeps the best parts of us alive. You are among a very small group of heroes of mine who are as beautiful and true and as constant as the North Star. You know, that abominable creature in Washington is causing most of us great alarm and damage. He is not qualified or fit for the job. I know it would be a terrible Herculean job, but you and Oprah could take over leadership and truly fix the nation. Dancing in the streets! Thank you for giving us your beautiful rendition of this beautiful song.
We still love you, Levon.
Bruce did Levon proud
I love when Danny starts playing the organ.
RIP, Levon and Rick
Richard
Absolutely Chilling, as Only The BOSS 🎵🎼🎶🎸✌️❤️🤗🙏🧚🌹 can be!!!
This is insane. What an adlib. My fav signer singing my fav band and my fav song from said band
Bruce is da man. Loved that.
Loved it!! A fitting tribute by The Boss, sure sounded like the crowd loved it too.
Una delle piu belle canzoni di tutti i tempi. Tutte le volte la pelle d'oca. Indiscutibilmente the Band
great. thanks for the entertainment Mr. Helm
Great cover...
Goosebumps like little mountains, damn!
What's the odd of me clicking on this 5 years later of his concert on the exact day
Long live The Band
What a great crowd
Wow, shivers down the spine...this is awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Maybe not Bruce makes the vid great, but the crowd !!
Erik Stekelenburg Several elements work together to make this great. Bruce, audience, E-Street Band, Levon's memory...it's a lovely moment.
AWESOME
crying like a baby. Fabulous, just fabulous...
Superb!
Wonderful!
Bruce never misses much
This is pure mockery of a good song and a good man
And you my friend are pure mockery of a human being. Get the fuck back under your bridge
simply f... amazing
Edward Oleander, Bruce is never "mean and obnoxious" towards the crowd- I call bullshit.
Omg I ain't even a Springsteen fan but that gave me 5he funding chills
Isn't the crowd participation at a Springsteen show invigorating?!
THE ONE AND ONLY THE BOSS !
Great respect for the great one
Great cover of a great Band song.
Just fantastic
サビの最後のコーラス観客がちゃんとやってるのいいなぁ
