I haven’t played Elden Ring because my PC has been broken for months now. But once it’s fixed and I’ve played through to my heart’s content I’ll definitely come back and watch your videos. 😁
Love it to bits! Will watch any and all vids about it 😛
Great vid. Karl, what app do you use to download YT vids? Just curious - future creator here!
The best part about documenting speedruns is the speedrunners or anyone in the community take their time to explain the mechanics to you.
I love that they are all in competition with each other, but celebrate their loss/other's victories taking world records. Such a fun community. I'm so glad I get to at least watch from the outskirts.
It's a pro chad move.... makes the videos more interesting... and extends the UA-cam watch time in the algorithm....
@@mynameisnothere9465 ya youd have to pretty pathetic to not celebrate a world record
He's getting paid to do this, you know that right? You act like it's being done 100% selflessly.
@@Lolp821 Whatever you're good at, get paid to do it. Meaning; just because he has a monetary incentive to do it, doesn't mean he is not earnest about speed-running and spreading knowledge about the subject and it's mechanics.
Me: I'm so worthless.
Karl (twice in a single week): Hello you absolute legend(s)!
Me: Guess I was wrong. Thanks Mr. Jobst!
Legendary comment, karl was right about you bro.
It truly is amazing considering wrong warp took a while to be discovered for DS1 back in the day, I remember being so hyped for my runs. The glitches found in this game have been insane, the player base and number of active runners has helped a lot.
I think it's because the huge playerbase and large streaming community. Inevitably someone will find something and it'll filter it's way down to the people who can actually incorporate it into a run.
@@aethlred7380 Definitely that, along with the heightened general understanding of the engine itself that had evolved over the years, so the combination is resulting in all sorts of crazy discoveries.
Distortion2 is the man, always blown away by him every single From release.
He's been an absolute machine with ER, literally *smashing* the WR every day. It's mind-blowing.
Well he uses hacks sooooooo.....
@@irbster Such as?
@@irbster hacks? Can you elaborate more?

I'm on Journey 3 right now, and a 15 hour Journey 2 still felt like a speedrun compared to my 95 hour first playthrough.
My first run was 250 hours. Did everything. Co-op and PvP included. Second took 9 hours.
@@woolgum Just finished my first run that I started on release - 260 hours to 100% every dungeon, boss, etc. Last thing I did was Malenia.
I like 100% all of the Fromsoft games... DS3 took me 90, and DS1 only took me 60. Honestly scary how big Elden Ring is.
I would love to see a more in depth look at the rest of the speedrun
I'm sure tomatoanus will put out a vid on it eventually
The rest of the run is not that hard to understand If you play the game. But this wrong warp was very confusing.
SAme!
I'd be really curious to see how fast a glitchless speedrun would be for Elden Ring, while taking down EVERY single side boss and main boss in no particular order.
That's a lot of horse riding
"100% glitchless" sounds like a fun category for this game.
These are the kind of speedruns I love. There's nothing entertaining about glitching through an entire game in 20 minutes, for me, personally.
Itll happen
Considering the all bosses times for other from soft games probably 7-8 hours.
Zipping isn't *maybe* hardware dependent, it 1000% is lol. I hope we can get a deep dive into it cause it's such an interesting and fun glitch
I've heard mixed feedback from various speedrunners. Some believe it's hardware dependent, but some apparently were starting to believe it was more software dependent. Either way, it's incredible to see it being used and I'm looking forward to seeing it be exploited and better understood over time.
no it isnt

@@juniorbutton incorrect. It is maybe in this instance.
Is it tied to fps? Since high fps can break movement in alot of games.
Extremely impressive what the ER community already found out and achieved, the game's just out for like 5 weeks. I did NG++ with my full gear in 2 hours and 12 minutes, that's as much speedrunning as I'll ever put into this game.
I can't help but go for the near 100% completion on every character or NG. There's just so much content in the game & all of it is enjoyable. I have been doing things in wildly different orders though. It's pretty amazing just how non-linear the game can be if you want it to be.
What exactly is impressive about deliberately exploiting a game just to say you finished it the fastest just to be on a leaderboard? Developers make games with the idea of enjoyment and gamers - actual gamers that is, who barely exist anymore it seems - to play it as intended, not to poke holes and find skips where possible.
@@Lolp821 so then don't watch speedrunning or speedrun games if you don't enjoy it. You don't need to yuck other people's yum, let other people enjoy things you don't even if you don't understand it.
@@Lolp821 it's literally a singleplayer game... the only possible way i'd agree with you is if someone chose to warp and then called the game boring. if thats what you mean i agree man
@@axel-em4qq I've watched speedrunning for a long time, how it's went from trying to play the game as intended the fastest, to primarily being exploited runs as 'normal' runs that get news coverage. It's very disappointing that it's became that. You can have fun with the game doing whatever you want, but ultimately the game is intended to be played in a certain way, the inflated sense of superiority with runs like this is little sad, imo. I don't mean that btw what you mentioned, so I guess we can do the old agree to disagree.
Amazing video, this explanation is so much better than anything I could ever hope to give. And I used to hold the world record in any% unrestricted!
Really looking forward to that eventual video on zips, hopefully we in the Elden Ring community can figure it out. They are by far my favorite technique in Elden Ring.
Great video! I've seen some speedruns and really appreciate how this video explains all the crazy stuff they do because I was so confused about it haha
I would love to see a part 2 about the upgrades and fighting the boss!
Looks like they are using Hoarfrost Stomp which is an attack that has since been patched
Just watch distortions videos he explains almost every decision he makes while making it.
Was waiting for this one, and you delivered faster than expected, much like the Elden Ring speedrunners! Big ups!
Definitely down for a breakdown of the rest of the speedrun! Amazing video as always Karl!

Take a shot everytime Karl says "stable ground"
I’m now in the ICU
I got shot over 50 times and am now bleeding to death
The zipping technique done by distortion just made him the sub 18 wr it’s crazy
Give us another one! Great content, as always. An indepth look without terrible spoilers, aside from showing the last boss.
Love you Karl. Keep on being a positive force in the gaming community brother!
I'd love to hear more on this speedrun!
That was such a good explanation for whats going on with the glitch.
i personally dont like Souls games, but i can appreciate the speedrunning of anything
Keep up the great content!! I keep watching old videos so many times! Love it!
Your documentary style is awesome as always. This Faster Than Light soundtrack was the best part to me. Keep up the good work sir. I wish you the best.
Been following the different speedrun routes since release even before the leaderboards went up, it's been crazy to watch the strategies form. The pegasus trick is something that'd be great to talk about! It's only used a bit in Any%, but it's a huge part of the All Remembrances route. Though I'm good to see any Elden Ring content from you!
oh found you timmothy
I checked out Mid day squares, and they're bloody expensive even with the 15% off
not that it's a bad thing, just not for my budget
Seriously, once you add tax and shipping they're like 5 bucks a pop. That's the main problem with all these products that sponsor youtubers, they cost way more than most of the viewers can/will pay.
Dude, we always want the extra content and explanation. All of these videos are about minutia and overexplained details of how to break games as fast as possible and we love all of it. Thanks for the great work!
Would love to know more about this!! Great video
it is the first time i really witnessed how the speedrunning community works on a game to get the optimum out of it. For me, Elden Ring ist the best game I played in way over a decade, maybe ever and I am so happy that it gets that much coverage. Well deserved From Soft and thanks Karl.
Hey Karl, have you seen the recent Celeste 100% deathless* run/202 deathless run? It’s really incredible and seems like something you’d be interested in.
*aside from the required death for moonberry
please do the other part as well! Love these explaining videos.
Thanks Karl. Love getting new knowledge, love your way of explaining everything
It's always insane to me how something so vast can be beaten so quickly. And Elden Ring is particularly strange in that it took... days? to break it this much?
Open World games are pretty ripe for this sort of thing. The primary point of Open World is "go anywhere, anytime" and that leaves it vulnerable to certain tricks and shortcuts that don't have your more standard linear game progress checks. In short, there's no requirement for Action X to be performed before Outcome Y happens because they can't assume you'll get to an area in the "intended" way every single time.
@@ForeverLaxx I think they could solve that if they made obrigatory the character getting a key or any specific item to cross a barrier or open a door
@@tornado100able Obligatory, and that function already exists. There are tons of doors you need a special item to open, be it a key or something else, but there's nothing *inside* the areas that are behind those barriers that check for the thing. So, if you can get through a normally locked door, the game just lets you progress as if you opened the door anyway.
@@tornado100able I don't think it's something they should 'solve'. A good game would make people want to experience everything instead of forcing them. Forcing people through content would just hurt the game. It's exactly what sets elden ring apart from the ubisoft copy paste openworld format.
But it's not been beat, it's been exploited.
Even in PvP there are so many unintented interactions and bugs it's crazy. The game is so damn big that you'd be testing it for years to find it all
I was waiting for you to drop something about this, awsome!
Thanks for all the great stuff to watch man
This is an amazing speedgame and everyone from speedsouls is grateful for this amazing representation of Elden Ring and this community as a whole.
It's weird the game engine still has this issue. Once a warp starts, it should lock out any attempt to modify the warp parameters.
There’s alot of engine quirks they never fixed, it’s part of the reason why souls games have terrible frame pacing.
This looks more like a code logic issue than an engine issue, but I'm no expert.
@@Owl90 Yea it just seems like an oversight that wasn’t a big issue before.
I think it's possible that FS thinks that speedrunning adds to the overall popularity of the game so they don't want to do too much to break the glitches. Which sounds weird when I say it.
@@grayaj23 They patched a ton of speedrun strats in Sekiro but also talked about purposely keeping a rather large level skip in Demon’s Souls. So either it depends on the type of skip or their philosophy on skips have changed, also apparently a skip in Elden Ring was attempted to be patched but it can still be done.
Totally looking for the full breakdown of the run, please cover it!
Great video, was fun helping you out in disc keep it up bro.
I've been waiting for this video. Seeing the record get destroyed on a daily basis by distorion2, even after the nerf, it deserved a video.
What was the nerf?
@@aspuzling In version 1.03 Fromsoft nerfed the hoarfrost stomp which is the primary weapon speedrunners use to beat the main bosses in ER speedruns
Speedrunners just downpatch anyway right? Though it would be more fun if speedrunning would be on the latest version as sort of tug of war between developers and speedrunners.
@@timo4258 I think it's unfair for speedrunners to take advantage of game imbalances that the developer has since patched out. I know speedrunners normally choose a patch version to record runs on but I think that is normally done on a relatively stable version (i.e. after major gameplay changes have been made) in order to make minor details that only speedrunners care about consistent. One of the nice things about watching a speedrun is to imagine that it could be possible for you to do the same thing when you boot up the game. If they just use a super awesome weapon that no longer exists then it would take away that fantasy.
I'm interested in the zipping mechanic. The videos I've watched say it's easier to do with the resolution set very low. But at any rate, this is great content and I'd like to see more ER speedrun info.
Would def love to see more on the part 2! Please make it
2 videos in the same week, thank you so much!
I really enjoy your videos 🤘🏻
Aaaaaaand 2 weeks later we're down to sub-7... wow
Yes.
I want to hear the entire story of how this works. I don’t even like Elden Ring and this is some of the most interesting things I have heard.
I'd love you to cover the rest of the speedrun strats. Great video.
I would love to see more Elden Ring content! This video was awesome and very informative.
A breakdown for the rest of the speedrun would be awesome! Have a fantastic day, dude!
Yes, I want to see more of this game! It's brilliant. It's broken in the right way, that gives players the possibility to be creative in bossfights and the world to find fun ways to achieve an objective. I am having so much fun with this. The first fromsoftware game that I actually finished! Three times now.
Definitely interested in the whole speed run!
I literally just finished watching your last video and you post another one. What an absolute legend !
He’s the actual legend
Of course there's a way to get to the final boss without interacting with anything else.
It just requires a few rings to be jumped through.
Speedrunners did it again! Never cease to amaze us how fast they can broke the game
Can't wait for the devs to be amazed 😂😂
Calm down bro.
@@Born... how about no
Devs already patched wrong warp and hoarfrost stomp. Unfortunately, they didn't patch any real problems, like the entirety of the network code for example.
Why would the devs "be amazed"? They only care as long as the game is bought. They really don't care how exactly you play the game. As much as they are concerned, glitches are malfunctions which they have to fix. Efforts of a sweaty speedrunner to break their product are not met with joy, at best with indifference.
@@kozlorog why are you acting like game developers are fucking robots lmao? watch Halo Devs React to Speedruns on youtube. Sure they would want to fix it, but it's not like they lack all human emotion
I'm very interested in learning the rest of the speedrun!
Great work! I always look forward to your uploads
I was kind of blown away when I died to Mohg a few times, then looked up a strategy and found you can jump over the damn boss door. How the fuck did people even discover that?
As an invading player living in Aus, the waiting times are horrendously slow as usual, ten minutes of waiting just for a person to DC.
I found it by just jumping around whilst bored, I just wanted to see how good my jumping was while waiting, but ended up on that wall. I'd already killed Mohg, so it wasn't a surprise, I just assumed that there were invisible barriers whilst he was alive.
Good day/night.
Because instead of playing the game as intended, they're actively trying to skip events and exploit the game.
If there's things to jump on, people will try to jump on them.
@@Lolp821 Is there really an intended way to play Elden Ring, though? It's very open-ended and allows for multiple approaches to most scenarios.
Yes, please do a full episode on the run in detail.
All I've wanted is more of these videos. Idk why but these explanations are one of my favorite things!
I have only watched dist's old zip SR, the first sub 20, so I was waiting for a video like this one! It was funny you uploaded it just a day after I managed to beat the game xD
I love eldenring. One of my first speedrunning games aswell. Its such a well crafted game.
this game is truly the stuff of dreams. I'm glad you pulled from distortion2 he's an amazing runner.
Oh wow, I wasn't expecting you to cover this so soon, especially right after another video, that's a surprise !
Dude you are a LEGEND Karl. I love your videos man and I wish you health bro.
I love how much they've managed to break the game so far, I always like seeing what weird-ass glitches and skips people find in games and I never would have expected ER any% to be sub 20. Also its always funny when stuff like this happens because you get the mountain of scrubquotes being like "NO THEY MUST DO IT HONOURABLY BEATING ALL BOSSES WITH NO GLITCHES OR THEY WON'T GET THE RESPECT OF ME, RANDOM UA-camR COMMENTER"
I feel like Open World games are the easiest to break in terms of speedrunning. There's so many small area's the devs likely just threw together and went alright next spot without much testing. It's surprising when large open world games aren't completely broken in terms of speedrunning.
glitchless runs for elden ring would be pretty boring imo and by that i mean a whole lotta mindless running. not saying they dont deserve any respect but just holding the move button for a few minutes is a few minutes just asking to be saved
I mean, there's definitely something to be said for no glitch speedruns. It's a shame they weren't bigger in DS3 as it's not exactly super fun watching someone just walk through the map for 20 minutes.
You love it?
@@aethlred7380 except botw tutorial. it still hasn't been broken yet. damn thing's impervious
I’d love to see a more in depth video on this game’s speed runs
I'd love to know more and also anything on zipping. Ive been watching the runs and loving it, but also so confused by what they do.
The final boss isn't in crumbling farum azula, but you do have to beat a boss in the farum azula to make the final boss accessible (it's in the capital, after beating the boss of the crumbling farum azula)
The teleport to default sounds like an anti crash. The location and coordinate data probably starts as some place and 0,0,0. When the player teleports, the location gets its data and starts checking its array for the correct ending coordinates. But the map wrong warp interrupts the checking process. Thus, the game has left the coordinates at 0,0,0. Sounds like an easy hard crash if the game had actually nothing as its default teleportation spot.
Side tangent; It makes a lot of sense why the last area has its zero point at the very start of the area. The developers built the area from start to finish centered on where the player first possible respawn point is.
Thanks for saying this. I used to work on a large open world video game and so I came here to say the same thing, but I didn't wanna make a new thread if someone else had the same theory. In our game, not all maps would have any terrain at 0x,0y,0z which we referred to as 'origin.' So it's very possible the same thing is true here, where technically 0,0,0 exists, it's just that the map objects are offset higher than this point and then 0,0,0 would be under the world.
Just reeks of incompetency. Defaulting to a value you know isnt valid is a beyond horrific idea. Simply teleporting to the previous bonfire.. which we still know... would solve the problem entirely.
@@meladath5181 I don't think I would call this a situation of incompetence. I do agree that there is some true disappointment from the developers when it comes to some aspects of Elden Ring but this glitch is something else. This glitch has slipped under the radar because of how big Elden Ring is. For example, a part of the world crashes the game when a player steps into it would be priority one for a fix because of how obvious it is. Compared to this glitch, the player has to do two specific steps that are not intuitive. In such a big game, a slightly hidden glitch would be buried under the many other sections of the game.
I wonder how an all bosses run would look and how long would it take
Yeah, I'd like to see you cover Elden Ring speedruns. Your videos are great.
Yessss you need to do the whole run!!!
The flying Torrent glitch is another fun one to check out.
"And when the leaderboards opened up, we were able to see what the official world record was...
And it was *shocking* 😳"
me : that's where the fun begins 😏
Great research and presentation! I appreciate your work
I would love to watch this, but I’m *still* working on my first play through so not ready for spoilers yet. Keep rocking it, Karl!
Bit of a tangent from a gamedev; I wouldn't describe Elden Ring's combat as "mechanically-driven", that's a bit empty since every game can be said to be driven by its mechanics. I think I know what you're describing though, which is the way hits are decided purely based on having your hurtbox intersect their hitbox and vice versa. You succeed based on how well you understand both your moveset and your enemies', using s to weave your way through their pattern and land a punish or a backstab. If I were to succinctly label what sets this style of gameplay apart, I think it'd be accurate to call it "animation-driven".
The explanations in the context of the speedrun were good, but I honestly I felt like this video was a little bit low-effort. and I think we as the viewers could have really benefited from a couple things:
1) Some sort of visual indicator that the footage we are watching is paused (a small pause button, a slight warping or greying of the screen etc.)
2) A visual representation of what's going on in memory (e.g. what the current region is, the list of coordinates) - I found it a little nebulous when it was just a static image on screen and then a quickly panning map
id love a video covering the entire run in depth! thanks for bring the speedrunning goodness. maybe set your personal best for 'time between elden ring speedrunning videos' 😆
YES PLZ DO MORE SPEED RUN ANALYSIS OF UR FAVE GAMES
This isn't an april fool's joke video?!!
Actually really happy about this, April fool's videos are never funny and I really like those rare moments a video/post in my feed is serious
The speedrun is patch dependant because they changed the damages of everything and that's a logical thing to do in a multiplayer game, for the speedrun comunity the best thing is to chose a patch and stay on that, the game had an almost perfect realese and some things are broken in the mind of the developers, specially in damages and some attacks that instakill people or maybe a boss is underleveled for the level you need to get to reach that point. the unstable grounds is not that big of a problem because most people don't quit the game without resting on a grace before.
As soon as I saw the icerind I knew this was either an older run or patch dependent lol. Can't wait to see some lvl1 all main bosses runs of ER.
Distortion2 has been doing both any% pre patch and he's also currently doing post 1.03 all boss rememberances runs, dude is a legend at both! He does a good job of talking through what he's doing in some of his runs
I've been playing unpatched since release and it's definitely not perfect. Functionally it's fine but there's tons of localization errors, and most items are missing 90% of their descriptions/labeled incorrectly.
Damn this is cool. Thanks for covering this stuff Karl.
Would love to see a full detailed video on the this game.
i really don’t think anyone can call elden ring a “masterpiece” or “one of the best of all time” when it’s still so new that people haven’t begun to address the flaws like the amount of re-used bosses and repetitive side content.
There's like 15 unique bosses and 40+ types of minibosses, a lot of which have as much depth as bosses in previous games. People have already addressed the things you've mentioned, but that's only until you realize that you're comparing it to literally nothing.
Even if you remove the side-content, there's still a pretty hefty Dark Souls game there, so it's not like it's lacking. You can argue that mini-bosses get reused, but then compare it to literally any other game ever made. Breath of the Wild was incredible, and it only had like 5 enemy types. I can't think of many games in recent memory that even have as many different enemies as this game has types of mini-bosses.
Granted, I've had instances later in the game where I'm disappointed to find a mini-boss I had already found, but I think the only reason that happens is because I'm always expecting to find something completely unique. And even then, a lot of reused enemies have unique properties or special gimmicks to separate them from each other.
@@gatchu2246 i just find it off that one of dark souls 2’s biggest complaints was the amount of re-used bosses but elden ring seems to have gotten away with it just for being a bigger game despite, proportionally, reusing way more stuff per area than dark souls 2 did.
and for me, since fromsoft games are narrative/cutscene driven, the fun comes mostly from engaging with the world. it’s already less fun going into a NG+ knowing all the secrets the world has to offer but this game is especially worse since they make you fight like 20 ulcerated spirits, tree avatars, crucible knights, etc. and don’t even get me started on the obscure npc questlines
@@fulltimeslackerii8229 I've never heard of reused bosses being a complaint about DS2, only complaints about bad bosses.
Fromsoft games are narrative driven? Aside from Sekiro, they're almost devoid of narrative. I can recall only a handful of actual story cutscenes throughout the entire series.
I'm pretty sure you don't know all the secrets going into NG+. I've gone into NG+ and kept finding things I just hadn't found before, despite being relatively thorough.
And why do you need to fight multiple tree spirits, avatars, or crucible knights? Aside from the aspect of crucible incantations, I don't see any reason to fight the knights. They're not required for anything, they're just like the black knight equivalents of this game. Likewise, the avatars aren't good for anything if you don't want their crystal tears. On my second playthrough, I skipped every avatar and tree spirit that didn't drop something I needed. They're very, very optional.
And this is EASILY the most accessible game in terms of NPC quest lines, because they either tell you where they're going, or they're at least marked on your map outright. The NPC quests are part of what has given repeat playthroughs so much variety so far. I never ended up doing Alexander, Millicent, or Sellen's quest lines, but this time around, I've just happened to keep finding them.
@@fulltimeslackerii8229 FS games are not narrative/cutscene driven whatsoever.
As a Souls fan, I am very offended by your statement that Elden Ring is a "broken game", because it implies a FromSoft game is less than perfect. Please delete this video and correct this misinformation you're putting forth
Thanks for another great video :-) Yes please Karl - a part 2 would be awesome!!
you should definitely cover the rest of the speedrun!
i hoped to see an explanation to the zip glitch, but still a really nice video as always.
I recently used a sequence break to get to crumbling farum azula without having to burn the erdtree. Was able to get those lost couple smithing stone bells to be able nearly fully upgrade any weapon with just runes.
2 Karl videos so close :o that's amazing!!!
Definitely would love another video on Elden Ring!
Thanks for explaining! I was watching the sub 18 speed runs and they never explained.
I think speedrun breakdowns are super cool to see, and Elden Ring is one of the coolest games I’ve seen in quite a while, so I’d love to see a video on the entire run. I always feel like a 30 minute speedrun can teach me more about a game than hours of standard gameplay, so I hope you do a video on it
Really nice. I'd love to see a video that goes more in depth about the run, for sure.
Yes please make a follow up for the rest of the speed run
This game is so massive. I keep thinking I cleared an area just to go back or see a video showing something I missed. And I am at 120 hours an level 115. I just got to the first grace in the snowy mountains but decided to go back and scour all the areas to find as much as I can.
Awesome video! Very intriguing. I will say, I think the explanation would have benefited from some info-graphics. I got a little lost during the explanation a few times. Hope to see more content on this speedrun!
Definitely came to see the full speedrun

But a great video like always, can't wait to see new tricks for this Speedrun, it already looks so insane
