- When one fascinating glitch takes over a speedrun, it is bound to spell trouble...
This video examines the Pizza Swap glitch (aka Chainsaw Glitch) in Elden Ring which became so powerful as to ruin all of the game's speedrunning leaderboards. I dive deep into the inner mechanics of the glitch, explore how it was discovered, further refined, and how it reshaped the speedrun world records, particularly in the All Remembrances category. Finally, the chosen solution for the leaderboards crisis is explored and a potential DLC and how it may affect the game's speedruns is discussed.
I hope you enjoy this combination of a fascinating story and technical details! 💚

So basically you force serpent hunters special projectile wich normally is only available against Rykard to shoot from the weapon. And because you use the Pizza cutters special wich allows for whatever Ticks it has to be applied to the Serpent Hunter. Thats why you have a gun.
Yeah, when I saw it, I was just thinking that they'd created a machine gun, lol
Almost. I don't think it's a projectile so much as the weapon's hitbox becomes very large and elongated, otherwise it wouldn't have worked as in the case of the weapons with projectile based arts. Otherwise, bang on.
That's why you have an MG42*
Just like in bloodborne.
What makes people write comments like these, we all saw the video bro 😅
Got invaded by a toxic guy in full Bullgoat armour who one shotted me with this glitch. Can't say I appreciate it as much as the Speedrunning community
Don’t worry. That guy probably has a terrible home life
Maidenless behavior, point down
@@deadmanwalking915 stop projecting bud
@@ollieanon4341 You definitely have a bad home life with remarks like that son
@@ollieanon4341Says the guy who's projecting the most lmao.
I've never really been a serious runner myself but I'm a big watcher of speedruns and I can say that, at least for me personally, "no major glitches" category runs are always more entertaining and rewatchable. Someone being really ridiculously good at the game is simply easier to appreciate than them being good at hitting glitches, even if triggering the glitch correctly is actually harder than playing normally.
Fully agreed.
This is such a great point. To most of the casual audience, it is much easier to grasp casual-style gameplay done in a fast way, rather than more complicated glitches which might not be as visually impressive at first. It is why, I believe, 2D platforms and other easy to understand games get over so well with audiences.
I don't mind glitches as long as it makes the speedrun entertaining for both runner and watcher. Probably some of the best glitches are in botw and they are fun to watch imo
same, I vastly prefer speed-runs to glitch-runs.
Interesting as it can be to see someone slam a barrel into the floor to physics through a fence/wall/barrier, it's nothing like seeing someone use a games idiotic acceleration curve via simple bunny-hopping moving their character like a 3d-render-pinball in a maze built by sadists.
To me it is very fascinating to see in which ridiculous ways a player might completely break the Game
Cata is unreal, talented in both speedwalking and editing videos. I actually can't believe how good you manage to make them every time
Talented in speedwalking 💀
@@arandomcommenter412 I, too, speedwalk every day to work.
Speedrunning but more chill
I remember pretty much the same conversation as this happening when the elden ring zip glitch was discovered, especially in the early days where it was unknown if it was consistent or even possibly hardware dependent. I'd argue that changed the speedrun scene, mainly any%, more than pizza swap since you could basically skip all boss progression and unload certain bosses
This glitch made Speedrun of Elden Ring boring as fuck
Yeah, I mean someone using the zip glitch beat the game in 3 minutes 58 seconds...
Pizza swap is even worse, the run is long but pretty lame, at least, Zip is super lame, but short
zip was so boring to watch, and yet people kept dickriding it so hard for some reason.
i used to use zip in pvp to reach hosts that would hide in places like under the first fire in limgrave or other places you needed a horse to reach, also used it a lot in arena as a flashy gimmick, was inconsistent and hard as hell but the flat ground and walls let me basically zip glitch to teleport behind people and backstab them like an anime protagonist, it was actually a godsend for pvp. pizza cutter is just plain toxic.
This man somehow keeps doing the impossible. Just when you think you have seen the best cinematography in all of gaming documentaries, he does it better in every new video.
panning and zooming = good cinematography lol
@@mmp5453 crude reduction = good criticism lol
4:46 8:41 14:56 18:58 along with all the pans and zooms that apparently by default not good cinematography.
And he and the users in the discord server for the souls games are hella helpful to learning stuff. Great community
you do realize actual human beings MADE the game right? a bit more impressive than....downloading a software and recording landscape.
@@selfactualizer2099 bro, what are you on about.
Any%/All bosses glitchless are my favourite categories for Souls speedruns; it's way more interesting to see someone who's mastered the intended routes, even if they're not nearly as flashy as glitched runs.
Yea, I like them cause they usually show stuff I can do or new ways to fight that I'm not doing without feeling like I'm cheating the game.
My personal favorite runs are the ones that use glitches to bypass travel time to basically turn the game into a boss rush
I agree, once you see a few glitched runs you start to see how similar they are and how much of the game they ignore.
I personally like a good mix of a glitched run which also keeps most of the intended gameplay in tact. DS1 hit the sweetspot for me. In this case, Pizza Swap just removes too much, so I would agree with you.
I can enjoy either.
Even glitch heavy runs are impressive, especially when its a homebrew, as breaking the game can sometimes be just as difficult.
I was not expecting the glitch to be what it was AT ALL. I was expecting people found a way to get the effects of the Serpent Slayer Spear from Rykards boss fight to function everywhere, not turn it into an M4
That is kind of what the glitch is tho
@@chedddargoblin I mean the expectation was that the glitch just allow you to use that sword Rykards ability elsewhere. Not allowing it AND turn it into a rapid fire death ray.
Another banger of a video! The editing is just fantastic, managing to perfectly combine techncal depth and great storytelling. What an absolute pleasure to watch!!!
Thank you for taking the time to leave such kind feedback ^_^. It's my pleasure.
It was only a matter of time until the tumble buff moveset swap shenanigans were found
I don't watch your speedrun content all that often, but I love these history of speedruns/glitches videos that you make, my favorite being the one you made on the Goughless Kalameet. This one was really cool though, mega high production value. I remember Distortion using it in his Randomizer to get through Moghwyn, and I was wondering what that glitch exactly was.
It would seem a little silly for people to denounce the pizza glitch when move swapping is a huge strat in DS1 and most speed runners in ER use the RKR with Sword of Night and Flame weapon art glitch as they are all similar in effect by using another weapons move set. It does look like a lot of fun to use though
I mean, that's only the community problem if they adopted glitches as strats.
The devs never intended for you to do this shit in any released games.
You're right it is silly, eventually this will be used once they reach the top of current run limits. This is the normal cycle for speed runs if they are humanly possible.
Rather then denounce it make a category for it... something speed runs do all the time for this stuff.
Denouncing it is more being a spoiled brat rather then looking at how things will happen.
I agree, hence why I thought that certain voices calling for a ban immediately after discovery were not really justified.
I think the biggest problem is that it just completely monotonizes speedruns as a result. It's so overwhelmingly powerful that it blows anything else out of the water, leading to mass exodus of runners.
I also think that if they're going to ban the pizza swap, they should also ban other glitches that allow you to delete bosses. So just have a glitchless category. For Any% and All Remembrances.
This was an amazing breakdown to help understand how this works at a very technical level
This has gotta be one of the best explainer videos I've ever seen. And boy have I seen some. Very comprehensive, only the relevant info, easy to follow, simple but effective / quality graphics. As a professional motion designer, hats off my man! Keep up the great work.
Who'd expect that bringing a heavy machine gun to a swordfight might be a tad OP?
When it comes to speedrunning I for one prefer glitchless categories most of the time, speedrunners are the best of the best when it comes to mechanical execution. And a glitchless category lets those people shine while also proving to everybody that they could do it too without using the game against itself.
Suberp sound choice and editing, loved that you managed to sync that drop in 65dos NMS music with your story telling, well done!
The editing is insane. I dont think I would have been able to follow properly without that 3D controller animation.
I love this glitch. As a viewer its both interesting seeing runners perform something dexterous and its entertaining seeing the glitch decimate bosses. Its far more cathartic than watching someone use comet azur to drain a bosses life. If comet azur required a fighting game combo to execute Id be more satisfied seeing it done.
the motion graphics in this video were top notch dude. amazing quality as always
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed!
Motion graphics? Maybe you're just not accustomed to the game playing in 60fps?
These videos are always so well made
Legendary video.
You seem to make such normally elusive levels of information so easy to digest with your visual presentation and conciseness in word.
Especially for loving ADHD viewers such as myself.
Clicked the video once out of curiosity, literally couldn't stop until I had to in the end.
You're a phenomenal Souls scientist and information artist and I hope the community gets to have you for a very very long time to come still.
You have no idea how much these words mean to me. It is my pleasure I could be of service!
This absolute legend has single handedly made me fall in love with speedrunning.
Started by watching the ds1 runs and I have not missed a single video since.
Thank you so much for the good work cata, you are the king 👑.
Love the hyper edited montage at the beggining and the rest of the video followed as a great content. Greatly explained and presented, love it
Watched your GDQ run and that was awesome. Great video! I have generally been a fan of glitches runs in all game for speed running. SO a glitchless category for Elden Ring sounds great.
Really great vid and editing dooooode! You really answered a lot of questions I had about the current state of the ER speadrunning.
Amazing Explanation and Editing, and amazing skill at the game on top of that. I haven't had the time yet but i'll make sure to visit one of your streams soon. GJ as always
The breakdown from the start to the end of the video is out of this world.
I might as well try this Pizza Swap for fun.
Thanks for the great video.
Keep up the great work.
15:47 amazing animations and sound effects, you continue to go the extra mile and I want you to know I notice and love it
Your production quality has been increasing. Really appreciate the 3D weapons spinning when mentioned. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much! I was really happy to manage and extract the 3D models from the game. It required a bit of a different procedure than DS1 stuff, but it worked out!
Great analysis video! Really liked how you showed the controller inputs & such! Thanks for uploading!
It does make me a bit worried about the future of Elden Ring speedruns....
Made an important discovery if anyone is struggling. You can hold Left on the D-pad AND hold down stance to get the lock on and menu open. After that the timing is really tiny to get the weapon swap off
The Elden Gun.
Here we are a year later, and the serpent chainsaw still works.
Hot take: you don't have to do specific glitches if you don't want to because speedrunning often times is a made up way to play a game to begin with. The rules have always been arbitrary and leaderboards are only for ego stroking. The only reason why categories exist is so people can say they are/were the best at something, and there will only be a handful of people that will actually get to say it. Fuck the categories, fuck the leaderboards, play games how you wanna play, speedrun how you wanna speedrun.
While I can agree to a certain point, leaderboards will always have to exist because humans are simply obsessed with competition ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ah yes, the Regole Ancestor Spirit, everyone's favourite boss :D great video as always! Keep up the great work and the very nice entertainment ^^
man the quality of these videos are amazing. its like a full on production
Hey Catalystz, any chance we could get a showcase of the editing plugins / presets / templates you're using, or maybe even your editing process?
As someone who is both a massive fan of your work _and_ brand-new to editing, that would be awesome.
You're going to blow up soon in views and subs, these are amazing videos that explain Elden Ring's mechanics for the context of speedrunning well. My goodness what a glitch 🤣
Hey! Very informative video! Thanks for crediting me on the ds3 section. Just a quick note, this glitch was being used day 1 of ER release and was discovered early in 2021 on DS3. It was thoery crafted and discovered by Ryonicsoul and Falco_al and coined the "pivot swap". Maybe the Chinese community were the first to use it in ER speed runs. Anyway, credit where credit is due.
Ryonic claiming the highly contested categories of any% single boss kill for Friede and Gael with pivot bowgunning, truly the greatest pve speedrunner
Thanks a lot for the clarifications! I knew people used pivot swapping very early on in ER, but don't think anyone used it with a stance before the Chinese.
Really great video man! Thanks for also mentioning me haha ^^ How much time do you put into a video like this if I may ask? The first actual video I made already took so long and it was only super super basic editing. Videos of your quality must take so long man
Thank you for checking it out Muf! It took about 5 weeks of overall production, with 3 of those being editing. I'd guess around 120 hours of editing maybe? The main thing I focus on is always learning something new, so the time flies by 😂
This is an epic video.
Btw you're inspire me to created video on my channel like you do.
Great video cata! Always fun to get to know the ins and outs of a glitch. Also loved the prince of persia mentions ❤
your videos are always so impressive. highly informative, amazing storytelling, great editing, awesome visuals that clearly convey complicated concepts. thanks for setting such a high bar for this kind of content!
Great editing, and the visual at 15:47 is particularly good!
Thank you! I am happy that particular visual struck the right cord, because I initially struggled a lot with how to present that part.
Amazing content cata! I enjoy both your speedruns and your videos. The quality is top notch! Looking forward to more :)
I'm just happy I was able to play and experience the pizza glitch before patched.
I'm glad things get patched when a game is new. Let's hope a DLC brings us more new juice
Well then I've got news for you! After I found this video, I did a bit of digging and it's still doable on 1.06, and though I've yet to do either version, the new one seems even easier!
@@grimmskin3417 I tried the new one, it's easier for sure. But way slower to pull off (stamina drain). Some bosses are too aggressive to pull it off nicely, but who knows what the community comes up with to make it viable.
@@ollomont830 I messed around with it but never got it right so I can't say it's as busted as it was. Either way, it's yet another interesting way to play this masterpiece. Community is super creative...
great video! loved the breakdowns/explanations and this is easily 10/10 edit work
Thank you so much! I am glad the time I put into it showed.
Okay but finding the secret Elfen Ring Gun Mod is hilarious
How have I not found you before now, I’m mere seconds in and the love and care that went into the video is blatantly apparent. Subbed
9:06 i dont know why that particular column was censored, but considering the width of the pixels, it must have been very lewd indeed.
I could only stagger the enemy with Loretta's Sickle. That's a pretty funny weapon to bring into a boss fight when helping someone.
4:15 Yooooo, my man Unids! He's ridiculously good with pivot swaps in DS3 c:
The production value on your video is insane man, thank you for the good work
As I was already very familiar with how bowglitch works in ds3 it didn't take me long to figure out how this worked from just looking at it lol. Great video
How do you get your equipment menu to pop up with just the weapons you need for the glitch to do it fast ? Mine pops up a menu of every single weapon I got in the game so far I'm pretty sure you have to do this glitch fast and having to scroll all the way to the bottom of my equipment menu to find the serpent Hunter isn't going to work
anyone knowing eldin ring weapon swap glitch would understand it was only a matter of time. the range is due to the weapon is known to have an exstended hitbox in the god serpent fight, there is also a charm alowing you to get the effect outside the boss fight.
Great video, and amazing production value as well!
9:06 wow I had no idea Misbegotten were that terrifying
I just wanna say, that's the most awesome edit i've seen in a complex video like this. 10/10 sir, you're insane :)
I'm glad that you firmly put forth the "There is no wrong way to speedrun" sentiment. Too many people (more than 0) discard entire categories or speedrunning as a whole "not impressive/fun" instead of "impressive/fun for a different reason". Heck, taking it one step further, that greater-than-0 crowd may throw tool-assisted runs in the "not impressive" category. Sure, it isn't a human specifically performing the inputs in real time. Regardless, the amount of in-depth knowledge, dedication, time, and effort required to produce such a work is astronomical, making it impressive for different reasons. As a bonus, it can provide a theoretical goal for speedrunners to aim for.
Absolutely agreed. TAS speedruns are not the same kind of speedruns that humans perform as a final product, but all the theorycrafting, glitchhunting and routing is shared. In the end, a speedrun = put on a timer and finish a game. There should be no gatekeeping to how you decide to enjoy your speedruns. With or without glitches.
@@catalystz but cata, glitch bad and u bad at gaem
With the new DLC weapons, I bet the community will find something definitely more broken than pizza swap. Pasta maker, perhaps? :v
This is such a cool vid Cata - didn’t even know you did UA-cam clips. Subscribed!
I remember back in the days, DS1 was the game that first got me into watching a lot of speedruns and events like AGDQ/SGDQ. I also tried a few speedruns of the game myself, just for fun.
Then that day came : the moveswap glitch was discovered. Since that day, every speedrun of the game started with 30min to 1h of grinding the BK halberd. It was a nightmare to watch, and you could feel the speedrunner losing their soul everytime the weapon didn't drop. It was a reset fest. I hope it changed now.
So yeah, I totally agree with the fact that these types of glitches, either very boring to watch or that eliminate a whole part of the game are not really fun for the public. But as you said, they are on the other hand very interesting to discover and witness the first few times.
When you're walking 'on air' at 0:14, is that a glitch as well or an invisible bridge? I know exactly where it is, but can't find an invisible path.
I love learning about the speedrunning aspect of games. This glitch feels a lot like the infinite sword glitch from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in terms of execution and it has become a staple skill for speedrunners. I agree, it's hard to agree upon a ruleset when games are now being patched and updated. If Elden Ring becomes a lasting speedgame (which it seems like it will given it has categories that can be completed in a fairly reasonable time), a definitive ruleset can be established once the devs officially end active support for the game.
You are 100% correct. This is why I briefly debated the potential DLC at the end of the video.
Damn, hitting us with that Red Parallax at the start there, haven't heard that in ages and now i wanna listen to some 65dos
I’m surprised to learn you don’t use paddles rather than fiddling with rebinds.
The strikepack eliminator is so cheap, and works so well, it really has democratized access to paddles.
funny to imagine, during their banishment from the lands between, the tarnished just happened upon an actual machine gun somehow and brought it back with them.
this is why I keep coming back to watch cata, he always has such informative and well edited videos!
Ur the best man, I still enjoy your elder speedruns in ds1, thx for being a creator on yt.

i Just had this glitch happen to me a few minutes ago - got invaded while i was helping a host through a cave over in caelid - and then an invader came in - which proceeded to do this exact glitch to oneshot all three of us while we were still coming out of the main room of the cave .......
Is this shown to work on playstation/xbox or is it PC only? Been trying for an hour now but can't seem to get it to work.
i assumed this video would be about the zip glitch, but this is even better
Some people call the Whirligig saw a Pizza Cutter, I call it the The spinning oreo
sorry for beeing late but i just want to drop a short appreciation for your love for the series, speedruns and the efforts you put into your videos :3
The editing is absolutly amazing! WOW
Great Video
Thanks a lot! Bunch of effort went into it so I am glad you enjoyed 😉
The way it works and the fact that the sfx is a bunch of sparks makes me think that this is just, a gun.
This was a beautifully done video. The effort here is massive.
I have to know how of all weapons, the wheel n dealer is the default
Another really good video, Cata. As if this game can get anymore busted lol So All Remembrances will most likely have it's own updated category for DLC, while keeping a legacy category for Main Game + Pizza Swap? Seems like a good move.
Thank you so much, Maxy! I would assume for that to be the case. However, in games like DS1 or DS3, the All Bosses No DLC categories just kinda ripped when the DLC came out, so we will see.

Yet the speed-runners only get the BIG response numbers from popular or generally well regarded titles.
Elden ring or a Bethesda title is one thing but find an easy-complete glitch in barbies horse raising and barely anyone would be covering it.
Which is..... Good.
Interesting choice of music, very spacey 🤣
So i can use the Serpent Hunter everywhere with the special attk from the boss fight?
