Well, in my opinion a bug is something that breaks the code and gives an unexpected result, in this case it's just the game mechanics being used in a creative way to get a stack of their results

I've been in software QA for half a decade almost; my definition of a bug or glitch includes what you said - unintended emergent property or behavior of legitimate mechanics/use cases. Bugs can happen at any point in the design or implementation stages. An engineer can code something exactly to the specifications, and yet those specifications can be flawed if the designers/product owners didn't account for everything.
Indeed, I agree with you. Most of my time on final project are mostly wasted during debugging the project and pretty to say that it ended up as half baked spaghetti. 🤦🏻♂️
thats exactly what I'm thinking ' isnt that the definition of a glitch?'
@@jessefisher1809 most people think a bug or glitch is only the fault of the programmer
I would say that for a lot of gamers/speed runners, that sort of thing falls more into the category of "exploit"
Taking advantage of intended game properties to achieve unintended effects.
This differs from a bug, an unintended game property, or a glitch, a failing of the games properties themselves.
Its like
Bug: This feature was unintentionally created.
Glitch: A feature that exists due to a failure or corruption of the game itself
Exploit: Combining or utilizing intended features to achieve an unintended effect.
I mean, there is a reason that a large number of exploits are still allowed in various games "glitchless" categories.

I absolutely don't think it was for devs since devs would just use console to spawn exactly where they wanted but more an internal tool for level designers etc who can't be arsed to know how to write "code".

I dont even care anymore, this abuse-running is so boring.
I don't think ID "forgot" to disable the console command for binding the scroll wheel. At that point when you start putting console commands in, you are now modifying the game beyond its original intent. The only people that can be really blamed is the speedrunning community agreeing that binding console command use was ok.
Indeed. I'm kind of stumped that they allowed this use of console commands.
Lol what? Disable console? So you won't be able to record demo or limit fps anymore?
@@proosee I met just that command in general. Edited to clarify that.
@@proosee I don't think you're understanding what OP is saying. What's weird isn't that console commands are being used, it's that they're being used to break a dev intended restriction. In this case it's no different than using a macro to rebind the spacebar to the scroll wheel (not usually bad, but because it's dev restricted here, it should be disallowed for speed running purposes) or a custom controller to make certain input combinations easier.
It would be entirely different if you could glitch the options menu to bypass the restriction and rebind anyways, but using console commands it basically entering a cheat code and should be discouraged not encouraged.
@@Sterl500 exactly. Or someone using a console command to disable clipping and run through walls. *“It’s not really a glitch, it’s just an unintended property of some of the games mechanics”*
Pretty sure you just partially(if not fully) defined what a glitch is
Glitches are the code breaking and producing unexpected results. This exploit is the code working as intended and producing unexpected results.
No you see, a glitch is unintended, this is a feature in the truest sense of the word. It's just used to it's limits to achieve sequence breaks
Mass effect soundtrack in the background 😍😍😍
I don't think the "ledge smoothing" works like you showed, it probably is just that Doomguy has a capsule collision. And for the jump extension I'd say is something similar, Doomguy may have some collision system detecting if he started falling AND close to where he fell from.
And I find it funny that this version of id Tech still has slope jumps just like Quake, I hope they don't change any of these -bugs- features.
That doesn't make any sense. For the first one, the ramp jumping only works on ramps, which means it doesn't matter what shape the Doomguy's hitbox is, if the ground isn't a ramp you won't get the boost. For the second one, that is literally the equivalent of what he said, just from the "perspective" of the Doomguy. It would make much more sense (and be more performant) to surround the ledges with an extra hitbox and check whether the player is colliding with it, rather than adding some static number to Doomguy's hitbox every time you perform a check.
We know that the game determines what is and what isn't a ramp by looking at the face normal of the surface the player is standing on. If its z component is less than 0.91 it is considered to be a ramp (flat ground would have a (0,0,1) surface normal). This can't be explained by the player having a capsule collider (which it does) as that wouldn't lead to any detectable surfaces with a non (0,0,1) normal on sharp edges.
It does work that way...and surprisingly the video game expert who made this video is right, and you're wrong.
You would be a great teacher, my dude. Nice explanation.
"...an unintended emergent property of some of the game's mechanics." Uh, it's called an exploit, Karl.
I was not expecting this to be so unbelievably indepth! Wonderful work!
Great video, and happy to hear more Mass Effect music in the background.
Leave it to the pc master race to make fun things not.
Wait, aren't console commands considered as cheating in speed run any % community ?
Binding single command to single key was never considered cheating in speedruns
Its cheating during the run, but this enter in that discussion of preparation vs run. IIRC Karl did a video some time ago about someone making a adapation on the controller to fix the stick in a specific place and there has a lot of controversy on that.
This one I dont think is a problem, different of macros or trying to use commands to exclude some files to create openings/exploits. This just uses the games assets in a different way.
@@proosee ehhhh....that's not what he asked though. Yes, changing controls to whatever you want is fine, including multiple controls to one key. Console commands being required to do it because the game disallows it otherwise is definitely a bit more marginal. Especially when it then makes computer performance have a strong effect on the trick, rather than just skill.
I kindof agree. If there was a console command for "mega high badass jump mode" would that be allowed?
@@FFKonoko that's not true, binding multiple commands to one key is more like gray area (because allowing this makes scripting allowed basically) and this is forbidden in many games/leagues. Making player not able to bind jump to mouse key is for me ridiculous.
I've been picking up Unity since the begin of the quarantine. Always been eager to see how games are really made from the very foundations.
From the very small amount I've gathered, Something like this is bound to happen more and more. It took me two days to make an animated 2D sidecroller view hero properly double jump. And that's with sprites simple 2D collision and forces.
The amount of tries with "unexpected" consequences is probably in the hundreds and the legendary codding joke of "fix one thing and there's 10 more problems" is, I can confirm, 100% true.
With a beast like Eternal that's LITERALLY based on an extremely extensive movement system with 3D enviros, forces, models, animations and probably an insane amount of keybinding code (and the adaptation needed for different platforms), I'm not surprised one bit. I'm surprised there's not a simpler way to do it actually ! With the massive 3 axes mobility and all the traversal capabilities I would have thought it wouldn't even require free scrolling.
I'm also amazed that you coudn't bind free scroll to jump. It shows ID expected it and really knows what players can do with the software but they clearly didn't expect that hardware technicality.
If I were to run it, I woudn't go as far as to buy another mouse or download a coded macro... I think it kinda defy the original vibe.
That's why I mostly watch glitchless runs and games and the people that run them. I'd rather see and be impressed by something technical done in the game (and not litteraly O.O.B) and see that it costs the runner time only to be blown away when they manage to do it without loosing time rather than just see someone just use a hardware technicality and skip entire sections of the game. It's a preference still, both can be fun and are totally valid.
PS : Snatch is just quality culture, great tastes Karl !
These are really cool exploits, but I don't think they should be allowed in main-category leaderboards. Using console commands to allow something should never be considered as actually playing the game - if you can't set bindings in the menu, you shouldn't set them. It's like using a modded controller to make doing a HESS easier in Ocarina of Time. Kinda gross and goes against the spirit of speedrunning.
Also, having a higher framerate to get better results basically gatekeeps top times behind having a super good computer. The game should be forced to lock at 60 or 120 or 144 at MOST, imo. But this is less of a contentious issue since they at least stop it at 250.
The console commands and the script utilizing them were actually made legal for use in lieu of preventing the exploit from being gated behind buying external hardware like a mouse with freespin. The people monitoring submissions explicitly waited to share information about it until they had a script ready to help at least standardize it for everyone to use.
It's absolutely not a perfect solution, but it's not the worst one since most speedrunners will tend to have rigs that can run the game they choose decently to start (Because, who would want to competitively run a game they just inherently can't play optimally to start with) with compared to having a mouse that specifically allows you to disable the ratcheting on the scrollwheel.
@@spinyjustspiny3289 Buying a mouse with freespin would be null and void if you didn't use console commands to begin with, because you wouldn't be able to bind jump to scroll wheel.
@@theSato Computer power increases over time, one day integrated graphics will be as powerful as a 2080ti is now. My next monitor will be 240hz, or maybe even 300hz, when they drop below $200, so limiting the frame rate makes no sense. I use a free scrolling wheel for browsing the internet and word documents. Putting limits just to spite users of current high end hardware and future mid range hardware is the reason some games "don't age well". Could you imagine if all games were locked to 15fps, because the developer hates people with better hardware? That would suck.
@@Trainboy1EJR I'm pretty well aware that computer power increases over time. We're like, probably a decade or more away from integrated graphics matching anything resembling a 2080ti though.
Limiting the frame rate makes perfect sense. What monitor you are going to buy or your current/future PC is not really relevant to that.
That's nice that you have a free scrolling wheel, but its not really relevant or a counterpoint.
Putting a framerate limit isn't "spiting users of high end hardware". It's leveling the playing field. 120 or 144 would be generous, nobody really needs more than that. Tests have been done showing 144 is truly at the upper limit of what makes any sort of tiny, negligible difference to the eye & brain.
Of course 15fps would suck, that's very easily detectable as being worse than 60 or 30 or even 20. But a developer locking a framerate at an unacceptably low level, and a community agreeing to lock a framerate at "the upper threshold of what humans can perceive", are completely different things that you can't compare and a complete non-argument on your behalf lol
I mean, if you can't play the game on low settings with decent fps why even buy it or do speedruns on it. But I agree with the rest.

Glitched runs almost never display the type of skill expression any game intends. I agree that I prefer "normal" runs though. Not to mention that TAS runs kind of supplanted glitched runs for me.

I really like all the tricks used here and they're all interesting, but something about using console commands to bind stuff just erks me a little bit
This is what happens when the Skyrim programmers join your team.
All these speedruns are ONLY possible using a console command.
Why is this legal? Why is an actual, literal cheat code legal in these speedruns?
Because it is no cheat code. Because the Eternal speedrunning community agreed on allowing this specific bind as part of the ruleset. Because even without the bind smaller slope boosts are possible by spamming the jump key.
Not all console commands are cheats. Some of them are just the game options menu for nerds.
You are right Cri Cat. Using console commands to allow something should never be considered as actually playing the game - if you can't set bindings in the menu, you shouldn't set them. It's like using a modded controller to make doing a HESS easier in Ocarina of Time. Kinda gross and goes against the spirit of speedrunning. Rather than mashing the jump key to achieve a cool trick, they wanna mod the controls so people are forced to buy a mouse with scroll wheel and then flick it and go "hehe trick does itself :DD"
Also, having a higher framerate to get better results basically gatekeeps top times behind having a great computer. The game should be forced to lock a lot lower than 250 lol
The game has literal, actual cheatcodes in it. Console commands are not cheatcodes. Console commands are used to do things like alter textures and other graphical elements, as well as show individual output codes the game generates.
Saying it's a cheat code may be hyperbole, but you're still manually changing code to give yourself an advantage. How the fuck was this approved? They should have known better. If console commands are allowed, then you can just as easily input code to disable enemy A.I. or unlock your field of view to look straight behind you while moving forward, no other game that has console commands has them allowed for speedrunning purposes, why should Doom Eternal be any different?
I once accidentally slope boosted when landing from on of those large distance boosters in the later levels. Throw me right to the exit point of that section. Unfortunately, the door there was closed so in the end it did not really help.

so..first time being early huh?
...sorry what? I got distracted by that music in the first two minutes, what’s that track called?
Love the Mass Effect 2 music in the background
More!!!
I guess you could say the game was DOOMed from the start, eh? :D
Am I missing something here (disclaimer: haven't played the game) or could the devs have just always allowed vertical velocities to stack when jumping (i.e. add to the player velocity rather than set it) and not bothered with the ramp detection? Like, what would that actually break in glitchless play? Surely I'm missing something here?
we dont know where our feet are when jumping platforms? we've been BHopping for loooong time and it's not that hard
For me, that smoothing of edges is the problem, it would be perfectly fine if you could perform it only on ramps
Doomslayer took lessons from Athena before starting this new campaign
Wouldn't using a console to rebind keys be considered cheating?
Why not change the gravity value or just use console skip level command? While it is an interesting technique, I feel it's a bit dishonest to consider it a clean run.
Anyone else turn glory kill highlights off?
Somewhere there is a dev saying to his buddy "See, I told you we should have taken that room out"
interesting.
It'd be cool to see Any% runs if they patched this stuff out but everyone would just play on the unupdated game.
There could be a category split, one for day 1 and one for the newest version
Hello you ABSOLUTE LEDGES

You dare try to prove superior?
Definitely thought this was going to go over the super shotgun slingshot-esc method but I was pleasantly surprised
