Why do Goldeneye speed runners have the coolest names man. Carl Magnus-Wall sounds like a f*cking Bond villain as it is, Brian Bosshardt sounds like a damn pro wrestler, Randy Bukima sounds like a Boxer or UFC fighter, Rayan Isran sounds like a damn crazy Formula 1 Champion or Soccer player.
Great presentation. You really captured the full context of just how awesome and unbelievable this record is. What a journey the GE speedrunning community has had for a quarter century now!
I just want to take a minute to appreciate how good the editing is in this video. Everything that is happening on screen is in relation to what is being said. That doesn't sound like a big deal. But I've seen too many content creators just throw up random game play moments while they talk. And be honestly confused by the incongruity between the words and video for a second or two at times. The amount of effort put into what we are seeing here deserves more credit.
This is epic, I was playing goldeneye 4 player, and telling someone about the speed run on runway with the grenades, I swear it’s another one of Karls videos and then this this masterpiece pops up on YT.
Karl, your videos inspired me to go back to college and try to become a journalist. You are sincerely one of the best content creators I've ever seen, and I one day want to be on your level.

Love these Goldeneye vids so nostalgic after spending every weekend off our heads on speed and acid doing all nighters in multiplayer, so many funny memories of hiding in the bog closing the door as somebody opened it in a game of throwing knives only on facility. Or when my mate who had never played it pulled out a Soviet and gunned down my mate from behind who owned the game on bunker after saying don't shoot me I haven't found a good weapon yet. Couldn't stop laughing. Ty for a reminder of my youth with people I grew up with

Karls videos on Goldeneye are always a treat to watch knowing he's a skilled legend on the game aswell you can hear the passion he has for the game would love to see more videos of Goldeneye Karl in future
You really do have the best intro ever. So simple and elegant. No annoying CG montage. No obnoxious generic metal riff. It doesn't go on and on and on. All you do is say "Hello, you absolute legends" and we all know what we're in for.
I've been binge-watching your entire channel this week, and - especially off the back of this video - one of the things I've grown to love most about your channel, Karl, is that you posess the skills to match some of these guys and compete for world records yourself, in a similar way to Wirtual's skill to not just compete, but create awesome story-telling documentary-style videos on the same subject. It's epic.
In Formula 1, where each lap can easily be over 90 seconds, a time difference of 0.1 seconds is huge. Do some quick ratios to compare against a 30s speed run with a delta of 4 seconds and things start looking very insane very quickly.
Can you maybe increase the boost you get from explosions with some lean motion strategy? Could you get into the plane faster by leaning those last few inches? Just some thoughts from a non-player.
As another non-player, I don't think these optimizations would matter too much, given the Goldeneye speedrunning community doesn't record milliseconds. The first strategy might increase the boost (I could be wrong), but the increase would be negligible, unless the 0:27 is already on the verge of being a 0:26, which I would wager is not the case. Leaning to get into the plane wouldn't matter either, since the end of the level is determined by when the final drone gun is destroyed, and entering the plane is timed to match that. Since entering the plane is already timed to the destruction of the final drone gun, and the final drone gun is already timed to be destroyed as early as possible, entering the plane earlier then was done in the speedrun holds no benefit.
What's truly impressive is how Ljung learned every single outdated strategy before jumping into the newest one. Most people likely wouldn't waste the time, but he wanted to get to know the feel of playing at every stage of the journey before diving into the goal for 0:27. That's a great player.
yeah I think karl failed to explain the very climax of the video lol.but I think it was the grenade boost + a forward boost from a guard +no shots that slowed down +perfect route +perfect lag reduction and it seems a very small forward boost at the end too
I wonder if goldeneye will ever reach a point where people start timing themselves and decimals are counted. I know there’s reasons this hasn’t been done already but I feel like pretty soon there won’t be a choice. Maybe a new category of run could be created.
I've seen this addressed elsewhere. The in game time doesn't always match with real time, even with no pauses. The time is therefore more like a high score than an actual 'time' as in a real life race.
I've never played this game, but that doesn't stop me loving your videos of these awesome WR runs, as with the DOOM WR videos you've posted it's gripping seeing the progress over the years with the introduction of new strats or improved execution. great video, as always.
I had to stop the video and restart it twice; because I was like --- we already watched the history of Runway? Loving all the content, a nod to the previous video in the open would have made me feel not crazy. So glad to have another LEGENDary video
very good job Karl. i find this one being probably one of your best videos, you really enterteined me for 40 minutes straight which, trust me, is something very very few can do. i can really see how much you love this game, how much passion you have in talking about it, which is something that really appreciate! i hope to see more golden eye videos in the future, maybe discussing other levels. Have a nice day!
@@arcticrunning8370 you know it kinda makes me want to get a speedrun record just so karl jobst would make a video about the run. Idc about the world record just want the legened himself to do a video lmao🤣
38:15 what an inspiring statement. Speedrunning is really teaching us all to believe in the everlasting possibility of improving, even against something that looks scripted and unchangeable like a video game. The idea that new wonders, new challenges, and new amazing stories like the ones we've been through might just be waiting for the flash of genius of some ambitious pioneer, truly makes me smile at life. Awesome highlight, Karl.
So, a question about the differences between the :27 and the :28: From what I can spot in the videos of the different runs, every run except for the :27 uses the first grenade to kill the guard on the way to the first drone gun. In the :27, Joakim Ljung forgoes using the grenade on the guard in favor of using it to gain a boost coming out of the key room. After he passes the guard, he receives a boost from behind him. Am I missing any other differences from the :28, or are those the only differences. Also, as someone who has only really played the game casually, what is the purpose of killing that guard in the other runs? My guess is that it is mainly to prevent inopportune boost interrupting grenade throws. Is this correct?
I think you should make more videos in this style where you go through the map and show off the difficult Tasks needed to be preformed then showing the absolute legends breaking the historic times. Amazing video dude one of the best you’ve ever made. Can’t wait for the next!!

I am surprised a 35 second level can be made into a 38 minute entertaining video!
I'm sure Karl could have made a 5-hour documentary about this level but chose not to for the sake of us viewers.
You mean, 27 second level, right? 😂

What a journey the GE speedrunning community has had for a quarter century now!
love how you make a joke out of your sponsor while still towing the line enough to get paid, wtg man
Favorite part of the video was 31:03 where he pops off, the dog takes a moment to check out what is happening...then goes right back to laying down :D
"... achieved *this* run." The anticipation immediately builds when these words are said 😆
IKR? Those words mean we are about to see something epic!
This is epic, I was playing goldeneye 4 player, and telling someone about the speed run on runway with the grenades, I swear it’s another one of Karls videos and then this this masterpiece pops up on YT.
I find it crazy that speed runners never new how to run faster for months while 4 stoners on fet in England were running round at top speed on Aztec
Fet?

Karl, your videos inspired me to go back to college and try to become a journalist. You are sincerely one of the best content creators I've ever seen, and I one day want to be on your level.
I wonder what happens when every record hits its absolute lowest. Will GoldenEye finally use A real timer or just deal with no more improvement
Real timer?
@@Chance57 like milliseconds, instead of having to beat the world record by one second to not tie it.
@@siriusly7081 ahh, I see.
Maybe races will become more popular
It's crazy that new strategies are discovered even after decades.. who knows what else might come.
Found this gem of a channel about a year or so ago via a Goldeneye video, the one you did for this very level :)
Love how much compassion and care you have for this game and how kuch you've contributed to the community! Love to see these videos and hope for more in the future!
Thank you Karl, you're truly a legend yourself! 💕
Thank you for all your thorough explanation and detail. The passion in each video is felt. Thank you for the great work!
YES! Whenever you release a video, all I think about is what time of the day will I be able to sit down uninterrupted with a cup of coffee and just enjoy it! In around an hour the family should all be soundly sleeping. 38 minutes. Nice!!
Ty for a reminder of my youth with people I grew up with
Every weekend on speed and acid god damn lol how were you not utterly exhausted mentally by dropping that frequently
@@whirlwind872 smoke a lot of weed to balance it out lol nah never really got mentally tired when you're with your mates having a constant laugh, lots of playing football through the week and being active outside certainly helped plus youth is a huge factor we were all under 20 I think when Goldeneye came out
Something else that's amazing is how much content Karl can make about golden eye speed running, you can just feel the genuine passion for it.
You're an amazing story teller and an amazing content creator. We love you, you absolute legend.
Karls videos on Goldeneye are always a treat to watch knowing he's a skilled legend on the game aswell you can hear the passion he has for the game would love to see more videos of Goldeneye Karl in future
Jailer: Stop, or I’ll shoot!
Speedrunners: another time, maybe.
Jailer: [shoots]
Speedrunner: Thanks for the damage boost, chump!
The dedication, skill, and forethought it takes to do this is incredible. My hats are all off to these runners
Poor Mike Martin... dude played a game in '99, an early speedrun, and then gets absolutely demolished in criticisms 20 years later lol
I get tears in my eyes when someone shares their passion in a compelling way. I tear up at Karl's videos often.
“ABSOLUTE LEGENDS” noti squad
Hi
Hi
Yes, just yes.
You really do have the best intro ever. So simple and elegant. No annoying CG montage. No obnoxious generic metal riff. It doesn't go on and on and on. All you do is say "Hello, you absolute legends" and we all know what we're in for.
"Eric couldn't have been more wrong in his assertion."
Every speed running story ever.
It's epic.
Always a special day when Karl releases a new video
dude breaks a record and karl literally releases an entire documentary
thats why i love this guy
It's so funny how I've seen so many goldeneye speedrun videos and I had never known what the death animation looks like :D
In Formula 1, where each lap can easily be over 90 seconds, a time difference of 0.1 seconds is huge. Do some quick ratios to compare against a 30s speed run with a delta of 4 seconds and things start looking very insane very quickly.
It always cracked me up how slow the tank muzzle velocity was
The way people optimise runs to this extent is truly fascinating. It's like watching someone perfect a craft.
The fact that Joakim Ljung took the time to learn each old strat of runway and mastered it is kind of beautiful.
What I love about Karl's breakdowns is that he doesn't just say "This is incredible." He explains "This is WHY this is incredible."
Joakim’s run is incredible. Actually incredible. As soon as he went for the grenade boost at the beginning my jaw was on the floor
Always get a kick out of seeing my old footage on these!
What did Joakim do differently that made him go faster? The grenade boost at the beginning?
he had a boost from a guard on the way to the first turret and no backboost on the way to the plane
I think it was mostly perfect execution/luck. Had ideal movement, throws, and guard boosts.
yeah I think karl failed to explain the very climax of the video lol.but I think it was the grenade boost + a forward boost from a guard +no shots that slowed down +perfect route +perfect lag reduction and it seems a very small forward boost at the end too
I love all your videos Karl! There is something really special about listening to you when talking about Golden Eye.
You know the competition is serious and a big deal when it takes 38 minutes to explain 28 seconds of gameplay
I had to stop the video and restart it twice; because I was like --- we already watched the history of Runway? Loving all the content, a nod to the previous video in the open would have made me feel not crazy. So glad to have another LEGENDary video
30:07 had me cracking up 😂💯
very good job Karl. i find this one being probably one of your best videos, you really enterteined me for 40 minutes straight which, trust me, is something very very few can do. i can really see how much you love this game, how much passion you have in talking about it, which is something that really appreciate! i hope to see more golden eye videos in the future, maybe discussing other levels. Have a nice day!
I never cared about speedrunning until I stumbled upon Karl

great video, I've watched all of it already!
I'm some what of a speedrunner myself

@@Aidez A spliced speedview?
The scandal!
So, a question about the differences between the :27 and the :28:
From what I can spot in the videos of the different runs, every run except for the :27 uses the first grenade to kill the guard on the way to the first drone gun.
Can’t get enough of these speed running videos, thanks Karl 🔥🔥
It’s wild to me that in this realm, waiting “far too long” is like, one second
People really do have an eye for these records...
You could say...
A GOLDEN EYE
Ba dum tss
It was a chance viewing of a Karl jobst talking about golden eye speed running, I'd never heard of speed running before and although I'm a mere spectator I love listening to Karl chat. Thanks to all speed runners and especially thanks to Karl.
hey karl i absolutely love watching your videos but i have a bit of a question about this one
what actually caused joakim to be faster in the end? you showed it but without explanation im honestly a bit lost
If I were to guess I would say that he got three damage boosts on top of tighter movement, but I'm no expert.
The two times Ryan got hit on the 28 run either did not push him forward or knocked him back.
You’re the only glorious bastard I k ow that could make a compelling 38 minute video based on a 27 second video. You’re an absolute legend!
James Bond: "I'm alone".
Alec Trevelyan: "Aren't we all?"
This guy: *_"Speak for yourself."_*
I really appreciate the way you construct these videos. I’ve only just started watching your videos and speed running and find them enjoyable, extremely interesting and easy to follow. Great work.
KJ and Goldeneye, the combo i subscribed for
I have absolutely zero interest in ever trying to do a speed run but for some reason find these kinds of videos fascinating.
So wait... what did he actually do that was different to get the time save?
Randy is such a LEGEND. Dude paved the way, and I'm so glad you included as much discussion on his talents and contributions as you did.
Hope he's doing well, wherever he is.
that he went and learned all the old strata as well truly shows that it wasn't just about setting a new wr, but about learning how the wr progressed and how much new strats changed the playing field.
