Well, Karl can afford doing this. Goldeneye community, while a relatively big one for a 1997 game, is still small in the grand scheme of things. And since we don't have to deal with people who's attention span is only 1 minute at best, we can afford to make 30 min long vids. So yeah, longer vids = better vids

I gotta say, I respect the hell out of you. I know how competitive people get and even the NICEST competitive people rarely, if ever, are this goddamn nice and respectful in their own field. I'm a pretty chill person who tends to care more about if I'm having fun than I am with being the greatest, yet I imagine even I'm the kind of person who wouldn't be humble enough to speak with such breathless awe and admiration for peers you've competed alongside and technically even beaten in some instances. I wouldn't be an arsehole about it, but I might still feel a bit big headed for awhile about my victory before turning around and instead showering admiration on the records that came before me. Shows you really love this stuff.

Very entertaining and interesting video. In my opionion, this the perfect lenght for such a video - it is long enough to go into details and to explain enough to understand everything, even if one is not so familiar with the history of the game. Yet it is short enough to comofortably watch it and to enjoy it.
Of course, the lenght of a video heavily depens on the topic - but explaning why these gamers are number 1, 2 and 3 needs more time than 3 minutes each and thats it, in my opinion.
However, I also enjoy some of the shorter videos - I think it is a good idea to try and mix it up, depending on the topic.
Therefore - thanks for the great video and I hope you will continue with you amazing work.

The best Battlefield player I've ever known on Xbox was 9 years old. His name was Greatest30. He alone could've taken on absolutely everyone else in the clan at the same time and won. He literally got the most kills in a match on the largest map in the game with nothing but the knife. By a factor of *_two._* He was horrifying.
He was one of the main reasons I retired from competitive shooters. In my prime, I was untouchable, but it was clear at that time that I was old hat.

Hey Karl! Im so impressed of u speedrunners! I started playing goldeneye in 1997 and I was obsessed, but most of the time we played multiplayer, I didn’t even finish secret agent back then. While we were playing multiplayer every now and then in 2007 I had a new try in single player and made the game through including every cheat. For us it was a massive achievement, especially bunker 2 took us hundreds of try’s. But now seeing these world records it’s absolutely breathtaking for me! but more important is what kind of fanbase it got! I always said these Nintendo and rare games are special, afterwards with ps3/4 Xbox 3 it was never the same again, u finish the game and that’s it. With these n64 games , especially goldeneye, perfect dark, super Mario, conkers bad für day, etc it was different. U try and try and try and u never feel bored, you just know there possibilities to get better or other ways to achieve things! I’m really happy there are guy like u who keep this hell of a game alive and fighting this game to the edge to be absolute legends!

I love how many of the records you bring up have yourself as the person who beat it ;) A quiet (not so subtle) nod to your own skill and place in the games history.

This was an absolutely amazing video, and the one that got me to subscribe after a few days of watching. To see how much respect you have for these players is wonderful. Knowing that you beat two of the records mentioned is phenomenal. I only just gained an interest in Goldeneye speedrunning from a spectator view, so seeing names and faces to some untied records is really cool. Thank you so much for this video. I look forward to more in the future, and hope this game continues to entertain you for years to come.

So much time, attention to detail, and passion went into this.
As for this being a longer video, your videos are always dense and perfectly paced. You can make videos as long as you want.

Going back to this after a while, I think what I love about Karl, and also summoningsalt, is that they big up so many speedrunners and call them all the ‘best the game has seen’ but they are arguably also in contention in their respective games (goldeneye and perfect dark, and punchout). Humble kings

He's of the sound mind that no matter how great you are, you leave it to others to revere you. Tooting one's own horn (at least without being completely in a league of one's own) dims one's shine significantly.
Great video; GE and PD have a very rich history and you're one of the best talkers around.

particularly in cases like Rayan, I'm quite interested to know what these people do in their lives, are they in other ways totally normal? Are they geniuses? What kind of lives do they have after speedrunning?

    • @thunderball11111
      @thunderball11111 4 роки тому +8

It’s just a passion for the game, obviously combined with good motor skills. If someone’s really passionate they will dedicate themselves without even knowing they are dedicated, they just love it. Obviously people like Rayan are on the extreme end of things.

Karl uses the word “career” really loosely as none of these guys are actually speed-running for a consistent salary. Rayan probably just grew up and had to focus more on school and what not.

Hey man, really enjoying your videos and the time you put into them. Just a thought, would love to hear more detail about the development of technique which leads to new records - much more interesting when you learn what the new player did differently to succeed, and seeing how playstyles evolve over time. You do this a bit already (like in the lookdown video for GE) but your videos are strongest when you go into that sort of detail, even if it means only focusing on one level in particular. Anyway I'm enjoying your stuff, thanks for making it.

One thing I really like about you, is you point out you said something negative, and show what you said, but when you beat a record, you just say the record was beaten, you don't credit yourself, or over grandize yourself, I find that really admirable.
