What's The Best Base Location In Subnautica: Below Zero?

- It’s biome ranking time!
You all seemed to like the last video, so we're doing a sequel, but for below zero.
Nearly everything’s the same, but a couple of you suggested I should add an energy category. I’ll be doing that, alongside merging the style category into ambiance. Other than that, everything’s the same. Biomes will be graded in each category from 1 to 10, and ranked on their combined total.
So without further ado, let's get into the list!

When I heard "energy" as a category I assumed that meant the general vibes of the place but having it literally mean "access to electric power" makes sense
Vibes falls into ambiance.
That’s the spiritual word salad gettin to ya.
I feel its a pretty useless category because if you want to have storage for vehicles and water purifiers you should probably get a nuclear power plant. Also as long as safety is above 4/10 it’s probably fine
@@Not_A_Guy. tbh as long as you’re mid game or later and you realize how little damage most enemies actually do, and you’re competent of course, safety doesn’t matter too much at all.
@@RoozleDoozle-9210 yeah, as soon as you get prawn its HARD to die
My favorite location is inside of the Vent Gardens. It may be less convenient to have to swim through its mouth every time, but the ambiance inside is unmatched.
Also the Garden works as a giant aquarium. I released all my hatched fauna inside and they really pump up the atmosphere.
Can you build in those? Cause everytime I’ve tried it doesn’t allow me.
@@A_trans_sneasel there’s a trick to it. You need to build outside of it as close as you can to the garden. Then if you go inside and try to build near that, it should snap to that grid and allow you to build
@@imahaloguyI can confirm it works. It is easier and safer to build in the one further south as it is larger to fit more base pieces and there is not a patrolling Chelicerate swimming above.
@@imahaloguy ah I see! That could make a pretty nice base tbh, minus the two chelicerates patrolling the area but the vent garden should keep you mostly safe.
Yeah but the chelecarates outside ward me away, and plus you can’t dock vehicles there
The root pustules in the kelp caves are an insane bioreactor fuel.
Good to know...
Not insane since the reactor itself is kinda meh. They are the best tho giving 700 units of power each while the 2nd best being peeper only gives 350.
U know , along the whole game I used like 5 of those and mostly like 10-15 kelp seeds so yeah , they're really good
Lmao, i havent had to replace anything in my bioreactor, i put nuts in it and they’ve powered me my entire run so far
Below Zero map is so small that there is no need to worry where to build base. My opinion, the best base location is above the Deep Twisty Bridge, near the water surface. Why? Because there lies a rare material which you will need a lot in the game - Lead. Right near the water surface above the Deep Twisty bridges, north from the Island is an underwater garden of electric storage plants. That is the best place to build base. Don't forget to get rid of all Brute Sharks in the location first. They are easily killed. Just ram them all with Seatruck.
I’ve wondered this before. If you kill all brute sharks, do they actually go extinct? No respawns!
@@imahaloguy they exist not just in the twisty bridges
@@imahaloguy Except for small fishes, nothing can respawn in Subnautica games. The seatruck in BZ is very hard to destroy. You can kill all Leviathans by repeatedly ramming them until all of them are dead.
Same! I have a base all the way at the bottom by the diamonds and gold that has a ladder that goes all the way to the surface & lead levels. It’s so much easier to gather materials
My goto base location is always north of the delta dock, right on the boundary of the deep twisty bridges and the thermal spires biomes. Gives you great scanner coverage for a huge amount of resources. I usually will put a super small base near the dock in glacier bay and a small scanner base below omega base/lillypad islands.
The crater in the East Arctic is actually a really cool place to put a base. The chamber at the bottom is safe and closed in but there is still enough space to fit all the compartments you need. It can get dark down there aside from the light from the Architect relic, but my trick is to line the walls of the chamber with dozens of flowering spores and it looks AMAZING all lit up. And if you are ambitious you can build a vertical connector all the way up to the crater entrance to easily park your sea truck AND contruct an observatory for the Chelicerate. The walls of the chamber going down are also lined with rare minerals, so that's cool too.
Where is that? Ihe never heard of it
@@Selfwarpingquaranteenunit5167
It is found southeast of the Drop Pod. A Chelicerate patrols the top of the crater, so you could use a scanner room to track said Chelly in the East Arctic. Failing that, after unlocking AL-AN and him giving you coordinates to various Architect tech, eventually he will give you coordinates to "PK8". Follow that beacon and it will take you straight there. You'll know you have gotten close to the area when the PDA says "Inactive volcano nearby".
@@AloisAgos thank you, this will help me greatly!
@@AloisAgos i tried it but found myself in the lilypads but used a scanner room to track the chelicerate and found it that way
I almost always post up in the tree spires next to the Mercury II wreck. It's just so pretty and convenient.
I feel like Delta Island should have scored a lot higher on resources due to being literally right on top of the Koppa mining site, a literal gold mine of resources.
Edit: Well he did mention it when talking about the Thermal Spires, but my point still stands.
It sucks how this video only got a fraction of the views of the first one. Below Zero needs more love
30 seconds and I still love this kind of videos from you.
Im building a massive base at the intersection of east arctic, purple vents and lilypads, behind the mercury II thrusterspretty much exactly where the squidshark is (I got rid of it). very good late-game location imo
The fact that almost every biome has a high ambience score just goes to show that the beauty of the game is really it’s selling point
Let it not be forgotten that the shadow leviathans in the crystal caves do not respawn. If you have the dedication to kill them, you can easily bump the safety up to a 10/10, making the overall score a 43, which would be the highest out of any biome in either game.
Way to take matters into your own hands!
Absolute menace
Maida mindset
I just got back into the game and subbed bc of your video quality. Good job man, I appreciate it
Maybe I should make a base at the boundary line of the thermal spires and purple vents, get the best of both. Good to know. Before I made three small bases, with the ones in the glacial basin and lily pad island ones being more like way stations and the area just before the crystal caves being just a source of oxygen really. I could never decide where to put my main base but this video helped.
arctic kelp caves should have a higher energy score imo, as the kelp root pustules give 700 energy in the bioreactor per slot
personally i live here and i love it - the bioreactor is my best friend and kelp is like it's loving mother
There's one more! Surface void, don't remember what it was actually called, I'd say
Safety 10/10 (it's empty)
Convenience 1/10 (you have to do a lot to get there)
Ambiance 3/10 (ya like infinite flat expanses?)
Resources 1/10 (it's empty)
Energy 7/10 (solar does the best it possibly can, but it's solar)
I had little outposts all over and 2 main bases in the Crystal Caves and the Glacial Basin. I basically just released Pinnacarids everywhere
Merry Christmas! Great video!
Hi! Just bought SBz and will surely use your guide, thanks!
Great video bro keep it up and merry christmas
i usually base in the twisty bridges biome right next to the thermal spires/ the island, base is near the middle of the map, good resources and brutesharks aren’t really a threat as they’re weak
7:25 they make a signature, growling noise when they get rendered in so you can kind of know when one appears
in regards to energy in the lilypads biome i just build a shit ton of solar panels atop the lilies themselves XD then a bioreactor takes care of the rest and it's not hard to trek down to the vent gardens/anemone caves or across to the thermal spires for resources :> plus, glow whales for neighbours!!
Wow somehow the world edge being literally next to the dangerous biome is one of the safest biome
It’s very ironic
Breathtaker, you will be famous one day. Your videos really are interesting every time and they provide useful information. Keep up the work, you are on a very good way!
great vídeo man, keep the good content
Oh Damm I’m one of the first, great video- the energy measure was a really good addition
Great vid bro. Both biome vids were great
Glad you like them! :D
I don’t care what y’all say, lily pads is best biome.
Edit: he said world edge has 10/10 safety, what?
There is nothing there, but ressources. So unless you go over the edge, you are perfectly safe.
This is huge help for me bc i have never played below zero
Lilypad biom! I nest with the Seamonkey safe between the rocks. I have space for 3 large rooms, plenty small rooms, plattforms, food and access to the deeper bioms. The music is awesome and you can go for a morning dive with the Seamonkeys. I get my energy from deeper down.
Mechanically and story wise Below Zero is the better game (though I do miss the Sea Moth and think it loses something in not having an endgame sub like the cyclops) Ultimately watching this video makes me realise why I prefer the original. The biomes in Below Zero are smaller, frequently filled with cramped caves, busier with life and as a result lacking the calm awe the original game instills.
Honestly, nah. Wasn't a big fan of having the protagonist (forgot her name) & Alan constantly prattling off in my ear.
@@Enderguy059 Fine, you disagree.
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS
North end of the Twisty Bridges, in the direction of the Phi Robotics dock, sandwiched between Kelp and Thermal. I like open, flat areas for a big base, with no dangerous fish nearby. Major disadvantage is the water hue gets darker here, and i prefer brighter lighting .
Honestly, i can't find the perfect spot in Below Zero. I tried a winding base through Twisty Bridges, but installing windows mostly looked out onto rocky walls (looking up through the dome was nice, though). Theres some very pretty spots in the Tree Spires, but to get to Lily Pads and Purple Vents ( my preferred entrance to Crystal Caves) means going right passed the Leviathans. Lily pads is close to all the important locations, and can be beautiful in the right spots, but i hate Squidsharks. Glacers lead to beautiful skies, but getting a good spot for Truck Dock and Moonpool is tricky.
I think my favorite spot is the place where the thermal spires and purple vents meet. It’s super safe, as it doesn’t have the pink bitch, and it’s both the ambiance of the purple vents, and the power and resources of the thermal spires. It’s also super close to the Mercury 2’s stern, so it’s got easy access to titanium as well. Just a great place to build a base in general.
my favorite youtuber by far
I built my base in the twisty bridges early game, and on the shallow side. I never knew I could go deeper until I was looking for gel sacs with my camera drone, after I was disappointed at completely scavenging the mine, and finding 4 diamonds.
ay mate really love your videos, you should do a video about sam's death or what happens to marguerit after the first game
I have a base on the Delta Island, followed by an appendix just a couple of decades of meters below. Such a good place! Also I've previously had a base in the twisty bridges and in the Glacial Bay.
Personally i like Tree spires the most
Idky there's this sudden flood (heh) of new Subnautica content on youtube but I am all for it! 😄☺️
The kelp cave should have scored higher on resources. The sea monkeys give you all kinds of resources for most of the game play time.
It’s actually the most reliable way I’ve found to get magnetite lol
I love the crystal caves honestly and the leviathans well you get used to the constant fear of death
Why? just make them extinct. Takes just a few minutes of drilling em to x_x.
For a base, I like building in the Twisty Bridges on the edge of the Thermal Spires. That way, I am in a beautiful and safe location while being very close to geothermal energy and tons of resources.
I know i know im late but ahhh its perfect i love it
Thank You :)
@@Breathtaker5000 your welcome :)
The crystal caves is one of my favorite places to build a base and its really near perfect once you kill every shadow leviathan
I built base on shore of that land part with bridge and worms.. assumed I will have to venture to land several times, given trailers, it was not really needed
I keep going back to the lilypad Islands, I just really like the ambience, i want to make a base that connects to a lily pad on the surface but I am limited due to playing on the switch
I built in thermal vents thinking it would make the game harder cus it seemed like a sparse place with little resources 😂
Excluding the Koppa mining site, it IS pretty barren
Merry Christmas everybody!🎄
Out of dumb luck I built my base on a pretty great location: the edge of purple vents, close to both lilypads and tree spires.
My favorite spot is on top of the glacier mountain. Reminds me of building on the aurora in the first game.
Who said my base needed to be in a single biome? I built my base in a split between the arctic kelp, twisty bridges and thermal vents. Easy access to tons of stuff and lots of space to build
Near the entrance to fabricator caves, there arent any shadow levis, i built my base there and had no issues with dangers
You actually forgot one more biome: Out of the map. It's actually rather easy to break through the map when it's spawning in. All it takes is speed, which is done with the prawn suit.
Having a base near the ice worm test area gotta be the ultimate flex ;D
Crystal cave could be the winner, if you kill the leviathan inside what isn’t hard in end game, safety would go to 10, then it would have 43/50 points.
i mostly build my bases at lilypad island or purple vents near in the neighborhood of the chelicerate ^^
The glacial forest is a part of the glacial bassin.
Even before I saw this video I have built a base spanning multiple icebergs that I named and coloured after Scott base
Now, time for "What your favourite biome says about you".
Personally I disagree with the lilypads placement on the list. Since you can actually build on top of the actual lilypads, that makes solar power an easy energy source, which should jump up the energy score massively. And because if this safety would be better too since the only patt ofbthe base needing to be in the water would be the moonpools and maybe a scanner room as well.
So, I personally believe the lilypad biome is the best biome for base building in Below Zero.
You forgot deep purple vents :(
I ended set up two big bases and two small ones
My main base being right next to Delta Island in purple vents
The old category left me some SCARS but the new one is really starting to SCARE me.
Very Clever ; )
I was literally looking for where to build my base right now.. lol😅
Its weird. I think, the last time i played. The game just crashed anytime i tried aproaching the ventagarden leviathan. I wonder if that has been fixed.
All you need is a prawn suit and the crystal caves is 10/10 safety; I killed the lower shadow leviathan in hardcore it’s super easy
Cristal cave entrance
The only scary leviathan in this game is the shadow leviathan meanwhile all of the aggressive leviathan in the first game are spooky besides the sea dragon
Best base location is whatever you think looks cool or where you like to live 😊
I think the best decision I made while playing with 0 mob aggression was building a base right by the border of purple vents and thermal spires biome. I have pretty much all basic resources within hand's reach
Although I do have a Chelicerate as a neighbor swimming like 300-400m from my base he's very nice so we chill
can you do 100 days in below zero
Wait safety is a good thing? Reverse those scores.
Did you forget about bioreactors?
I feel like im house shopping but in subnautica
Thermal spieres are on average probably one of the worst places to build a base. Constant grunts and annoyance by cryptosuchi, annoying af to navigate between the spires, relatively big surface area of the spires to scavange (hard to find jack sh.), pretty barren and boring to look at, relatively shallow mostly due them being basically a coast for the delta island. Dont build there. build closer to twisty bridges and if you want thermal power just route from thermal sprires to twisty bridges. One more thing. Twisty bridges seem to have the best visibility in water so looking for things is easier and the view from base is great.
You might be happy with thermal spires at 1st but when it comes to expansion or verticality... no. It's no secret that in games with biomes usually the best places are where 2 or more of them converge. so build where you're still in twisty b. but are quite close to thermal s.
10:13 What coordinates is it in?
10:10 can somebody help me actually find this because that seems OP
Did you find it?
I made a base in crystal caves I found a safe place and put a artificial energy using penglings don't ask why I murdered them..
hello
As a person that asked for this
thank you, but you're too late
still an amazing vid tho
How can i make my submautica run better
Get a better computer duh 🙄
@@blakefenslerjr4858 i will be saving up money 😔
You could try turning down the resolution
HOW IS THE WORLDS EDGE SAFE
I found the best place to base below zero was the garbage can
Why does every single biome in this game look exaxtly the same
