  • In this episode I link up with Peter of Delta Marine to take his Nucanoe Pursuit with Pivot Drive for a spin.
    In the world of kayaks and kayak fishing several kayak manufacturers are searching for the right methods to implement pedals into their kayaks and give kayak anglers a bigger advantage while kayak fishing. Nucanoe has been working on this pivot drive since 2017 and just released this drive in 2020. Check out this video as I run the Nucanoe Pursuit outfitted with a pivot drive through its paces!

    Brother thank you for taking me with you to do a quick test on this NUCANOE Kayak Out. I got to say that is a nice kayak man. All the things this kayak was doing that your Hobie cannot do sounds like a winner to me. I can agree with you about Kayaking barefooted 👣 man. With my extremely very wide feet i am forced to kayak barefooted 👣 & I do agree with you those pedals would have to go. I have heard people say they change out those type of pedals for smoother pedal. When you tested it out to go fishing maybe you can try wearing your flip-flops and see what it feels like then or switch them out for a smoother pedal. That's awesome that you got a buddy who's trying to help you with your kayak situation. Good video brother.

      Thanks Mack! Peter told me the same thing, that a lot of people swap those pedals out for something smoother.

    What I like about these is the modularity - it may not do everything the best but the open deck and rail systems allow you to creek fish one day, open lake the next day, then go duck hunting the third.

    Great video Nate.
    Peter from Delta Marine needs to get you in a Nucanoe Unlimited for a video. Same pedal drive, awesome seat, multiple blank offs for all wiring, over 20'ft of T track for numerous accessories, motor in the front, motor in the back, etc. Preferably a video in some current. Let's Go!

      Man I’ve been in the unlimited and although I do love the open layout of the kayak itself, I’m not a big fan of the drive at all. Something just doesn’t feel right about it

    Weight capacity on the Pursuit is 500lbs and it’s 35” wide. I think the Hobie is 32” w capacity of 450lbs. The new Unlimited has a weight capacity of at least 650lbs, length 12’6”, 41” wide. You can actually stand up and fish a clear deck from bow to stern.
    Still a real paddle kayak however but you can also add a XI3 MotoGuide bow mount trolling motor w remote and stern gas outboard together to fish and go wherever you want to get too - best part everything is plug & play so it literally takes only a couple minutes to remove all pedal or power options and easily go out w just paddles. Awesome awesome awesome - every tournament fishing option sold you can easily add to their standard tracks - MADE IN AMERICA. I was also a Hobie guy and just about peed my pants when I saw one of their Frontier 12 kayaks w a Honda Outboard, bow troller, black box, dashboard, casting bar... and in retirement just became a NuCanoe dealer.

    Great video! How does the bicycle pedal feel vs. the push-pull action of the fin drives? I am also curious, as someone else mentioned, about the grass situation with the prop at the rear of the boat instead of right in front of you.

      My question too I have a prop drive kayak Perception Pliot and have a problem with it getting line or grass winding around the drive with the one i have its no problem clearing it how do you clear one with the drive in the rear like that. Of course, my other kayak is a PA14 with a 360 drive.

    You’ll have to be conscious while reversing in the marsh, that drive has NO give in that direction. Grass wrapping prop is a great point!
    Does the drive have some sort of guard on the shaft for getting shallow and maybe not fully vertical, I understand it has give, but still would propel if not not fully vertical.

    You will find you you move a little closer to the pedal tower the jerkiness will disappear you're too far from the pedal tower when you pedal your legs go almost straight at the furthest reach you should still have a slight Bend in your knees I have the pursuit with the pivot drive and I fish it in all saltwater bays and marshes in Texas and I love it of course there's no kayak that's going to cover all bases and bl100 in every area that little slight things that could be better but honestly I like it moving the pedal tower closer you can do that but only to a certain extent it has to be no less than an inch I believe are inch and a half from the end of the tracks on the top section of the kayak the tracks so you can't bring it all away close to you cuz it'll bring it to close to you and the drive cable might get disengage that's where you move your seat closer to the pedal tower.

    .. what about surf launching offshore ocean fishing.. i have heard nucanoe .. doesnt have enough scuppers and has issues in the surf.. you fish in the gulf on your PA .. will you be comfortable in this out there? really when i tried an old towne.. pdl drive 132.. 2400.00 .. paddles fine.. streamlined and goes faster then hobies as well and is 400 less and I have taken it out off the surf in the atlantic, that jerky spinning cable is very noticeable in the video.

    I'm not hating Nucanoe but I disagree with your description of the turning capability of the Hobie outback. I have a 2019 model with turbo fins and from a dead standstill I can get it turning in 3 quick pumps on the pedals, even in windy chop. I have not tried a prop drive kayak but I would assume the pedaling motion of the Hobie Mirage drive is much easier on the legs than the bicycle motion on the prop drive... and I have heard that it is in fact easier. I'm guessing the Hobie Revolution 13 would be faster than the Pursuit.

    I really want the new ‘unlimited’ model. I would love to put the pivot drive on it as well, it just seems a tad overpriced to me. I think $800 would be a better price but it’s almost $1300. That is way high for me.

    • @lexwaldez
      @lexwaldez 3 роки тому +1

      I agree... but it's so damn versatile, tandem, single, paddle, pedal, gps front mount trolling motor, back mount motor, it fills the role of about five different yaks. $699 for bow mounted GPS troll plus battery. What's the Old Town autopilot run? $3800? Buy the yak - paddle it for a year or two. Upgrade later on. Looks attractive to me. On the other hand, you can buy cheap and try to resell later. I'm on the side of buying American and avoiding waste so the versatility appeals to me. Buy once cry once.

      I got one on my F12, you can pull the prop up with the retract cord and reverse it off. One time I had a piece get in-between the prop and the rudder, if you use a crate it would be harder but I use a fishing backpack and I move that in front of the pedals and just turn my seat around kneel down at the stern and pull a pin and you can lift the rudder out and clear it. Did it with my trolling line once too.

    Should be interesting ,, on to the video ,, right off the bat ,, I don't like that loose cable running to the to the rudder or the canoe shape to the front ,, kinda takes a lot of your space away from it or seems to anyway ,, your a big guy ,, so you have to figure that into it but it seems like it needs to be a bit wider ,, How about mounting places for a depth finder if you wanted to use one ,, how about the quality of the foot pedal ,, that was a big issue on the Hobie you had ,,

    Lol 2800 for this boat? It is nice man, but goodness gracious. You can buy other pedal drives for this amount or less and have extra. • @southernsalt
      @southernsalt  3 роки тому +1

      I’m absolutely in no way pushing a product. I get no kickback from them or anyone else affiliated with NuCanoe, but there is a significant amount of value in a kayak that can have the drive removed and still be enjoyed as a paddle kayak. If you’re strictly a tournament angler or someone that goes offshore then certainly $2,800 is a bad value, however if you’re someone who occasionally fishes but also enjoys camping and paddling around lakes $2,800 is a great value for what you’re getting in this kayak. It all just depends on the person and what their plans are for the kayak.

    • @paytenblevins3401
      @paytenblevins3401 3 роки тому

      @@southernsalt I mean to your point.. a lot of pedal yaks can be paddled great and have way more features than this yak, just bc you paid a arm and a leg for a barge (hobie pa) which is a great yak but definitely not a paddling boat, that is on you but comparing this to other yaks in the price range with a drive just won’t work bc they are nowhere close to the same value for money or quality and will never be top sellers bc people realize that.. people get them and sell them or don’t buy them at all after testing them. So if I was only hunting then one of the nucanoes might be ok but still not worth that much for a crap drive that you can’t push at any limits bc it gets jerky and starts to move around on you is completely unacceptable for that price. Actually take it out and test it and then tell me how you think bc your mind will change almost undoubtedly. Im not trying to argue with you at all, but it’s not worth that much in a lot of peoples eyes not just mine.

    • @concilium1

      What’s “sub par” about it? Can you be specific? I’ve seen Pursuits with a pivot drive outrun most other kayaks when peddled at a casual pace without trying to push it.
