Bill Ward was originally a jazz drummer. He called himself a percussionist. All the best drummers have deep jazz roots. He is tragically under recognized. IMHO, he is up there with the best of them.
41 years ago at age 7, I bought a Black Sabbath cassette tape at a bait shop instead of buying a fishing lure. I was never the same. I still have the tape although I wore it out. Black Sabbath is a true one off band. Nobody can duplicate it. It will never be repeated. And it’s still the best thing I’ve ever heard. ✌🏻
Agreed. I love both Ozzy and Dio. Ozzy once said that he wished they had changed the name of the band when Dio took over because it wasn't Black Sabbath without him. Dio was offended by those remarks but anybody who loves Sabbath knows that truer words were never spoken.
My Mom (age 88) still gets scared nowadays hearing fire sirens (Germany)! During WW2 sirens announced the planes dropping the bombs! Love Peace and Happiness all over the world!
My mom was scared of church bells when she got older. She was living in the country when the war was present in Germany as a child. The villages didn't had sirens but Church bells.
My Mom was a young girl living in London when the war began. She was evacuated to live with strangers in the countryside which she hated, but returned after a while. As a lad I played with toy soldiers and tanks and aircraft and loved watching films about WWII, and one day something must have touched a nerve because she told me how completely terrifying it all was. Walking through London and hearing the sirens wailing, the sound of bombs, how she was given a gas mask, how one day the back of her house was blown in, how V1 missiles would drone overhead before suddenly going silent then exploding moments later. The fear never really left her.
In the time of great drummers like Neil Peart, Keith Moon, John Bonham, it's easy for even a fantastic drummer like Bill Ward to get outshined, but he is absolutely one of my favorites.
It might be the most socially powerful song ever. I mean war is truly horrible and horrific and no young men should ever be sent to die for their leaders. No matter the side you’re on. This masterpiece of an anti-war song has been giving me chills for 50 years and STILL gives me chills. Unfortunately as topical as ever. Great reaction video, kinda makes it my first time again too. Thanks Polo.
You have to understand how heavy this was for its time. This was written in 1970. The Beatles were still together (they broke up a couple months later) that's the kind of music that was in the mainstream. Along comes Black Sabbath with lyrics like "Ashes where the bodies burning" and "Satan laughing spreads his wings" ... people were calling for their heads.
I saw them in Chapel Hill in 1970. A guy walked on stage before they started playing with a bag of nails and a hammer. He nailed the effing drum kit to the stage. When the band started, I realized that the drummer was the same guy. Nailed to the stage, and it was needed.
This band were the first metal band. They tried to emulate the sound they heard in the foundries and car plants they worked in before they formed the band in the industrial midlands of England in the very late 60’s. Their guitarist cut bits of his fingers off in machinery just before they left work to start the band but still is one of the best metal guitarists ever.

When I was in Basic Training in 2008 at Fort Benning, our Senior Drill Sergeant made this song in to a running cadence, and it was fucking amazing. Ironic, as we were falling for the same shit Black Sabbath was singing about, but it was amazing.
You are doing what we couldn't do with vinyl we just replayed the whole thing again and again. It never loses its power. The whole track is the sounds of war. It is simply brilliant.
I love your quick message at the start of your presentations "be you, they'll adjust", that is both beautiful and powerful. Thank you for the reminder. God bless
I gotta second this. Showcases the talent of all band members...but especially Bull Ward. He beats the drums like they were calling him Bobby Brown and asking him to come back to bed.

An important context for the Air Raid Sirens sounds at the beginning is that they were an ominous warning of impending horror. These were the signal to gather your family and try to get to relative safety before the bombing began. The true horror had passed by the time I was young but the sirens still sounded once a month and we hid under our desks as part of the drill when the sirens sounded.
These bands are my generation. Pink floyd , sabbath , deep purple I’m now in my 60s imagine what music going to be come from the old peoples home in another few years . I feel a few noise complaints coming 😂😂😂
“Paranoid” & “War Pigs” are 2 for 2. Now check out “Iron Man”, “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”, “After Forever” and “Sweet Leaf” and it’ll be 6 for 6!! I saw them at Madison Square Garden back in December 1976!! Ted Nugent (aka the Motor City Mad Man) opened. What a night !!! #blacksabbath #warpigs #msg #1976
I love this video to go with the song. I love that he steps out, it means the world to the song. It's very dystopian and I love it. That little girl is amazing.
The members of the band were born in post war England. It influenced their lives in many ways. Birmingham was an especially dreary place in post war Britain. So that coupled with the Vietnam War which was raging at the time is the basis for the lyrics. And I’m sure you also noticed the grooves in the bass and drum parts. The UK had a huge love for Soul and R n B in the early sixties and it definitely had an influence on the rock bands that came up in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The Who, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath all had some funky hints in their early albums especially.
You got me brother I just subscribed. I loved this song when I was 7 and I still love it now at 59. Just let the music absorb you and at the same time let yourself sink into the music. It's just so good for your soul every time. Keep up the good work welcome to the metal fold!
This was pretty much the world's introduction to heavy metal, a genre that didn't exist before this. Many minds were blown away to be sure. Also, the song lyrics have many biblical references, and that cadence you referred to is that of a preacher. This most certainly is a sermon.
Hi coming from England I grew up listening to Black Sabbath and most Rock Music And now aged 65 I am still listening this Awesome music all the best 👍👍
Was at a car show or motorcycle show one time and the School of Rock was playing. School kids. They came out and opened with this song! There was a female drummer and she just nailed it. At the end I stood up and cheered... I couldn't help myself. No one els did. They nailed it!
Excellent Reaction. Imagine being in high school during the turbulent times of the era. Then this hits the airwaves! We spent many an hour partying to this and a whole lot more.Bill Ward is a certified, bonafide, undenied masher. Two of my favorite Black sabbath songs are "The Wizard" and "Fairies Wear Boots" The Wizard features Ozzie playing harmonica. Fairies wear boots features a really cool recurring drum groove by Bill Ward. Enjoy! We have a million more paths for you to follow.
I saw these guys in Memphis, TN about 1977! Great show, Bill Ward was killing it back in the day! Very underrated drummer! He pounds the crap out of the kit! Very impressive LIVE!
This song is more relevant today than it has ever been. When you have multiple countries using the people of another country fighting a proxy war on their behalf. It’s disgusting what is happening.
I'm nearly 60 and I've heard this track more times than I can count but Ozzy's opening vocals still give me chills and make my hair stand up. Sabbath are an amazing band and in my mind this track is their finest hour. Guitar, bass, drums and voice - all perfect. Unparalleled!
Those were air raid sirens and you get it the drum breaks are between the acts of the song. So glad to see the appreciation still a strong as when I heard it first in 1971 .

100%
Back then, good guitarists also had to be melodic…. Nowadays, most just play loud and fast, which is why metal has faded greatly.

I got to see Sabbath twice in concert... Nice to see you discover and appreciate them so many years later... Now your in the rabbit hole... Sabbath has a ton of good ones...but Symptom of the Universe is a killer song for Bill Ward drums
the 70's will always be the best decade ever across the board!! I was 11 in "70"
Great Show. I have been a Sabbath fan since when I was 12.
Black Sabbath and this song could be considered the birth of metal. Love the reaction!!🤘🤘
Like the air raid sirens at the start 😏
Damn you a Sabbath fan too... such great taste... in reactors and music. :p
@DJ TURTLE Hi DJ you are uncovering my tastes as you say you seem to be on my wave length.😊🤗👍
I love your quick message at the start of your presentations "be you, they'll adjust", that is both beautiful and powerful. Thank you for the reminder. God bless
You most certainly didn't annoy me. I f***en love this song, and the drums are right up my street.
Let's not forget Geezer Butler on bass! Criminally underrated!!
Geezer is a beast
My kid was channeling Geezer when he was 16. War Pigs, NIB.
A great and genuine reaction man! I encourage you to check out the live version from Paris in 1970. It’s mind blowing.
I gotta second this. Showcases the talent of all band members...but especially Bull Ward. He beats the drums like they were calling him Bobby Brown and asking him to come back to bed.
Bill Ward's singular style simply cannot be improved upon with this timeless classic.
Polo knows. Black Sabbath’s mastery of genres was insane. The Warning is probably the best example of this.
Came right here after seeing your Paranoid reaction!! Looks like we're both "new" Black Sabbath fans! And I'll be 60 in Sept and should have been a fan from the onset!
Loving your black sabbath journey. Keep it up!
Bill Ward was one of the most criminally underrated drummers in rock history
This is one of the few amazing classics you can pause and rewind all day and people won't get mad because we all do it even the million time we hear it
Bill Ward is a beast on the drums every bit as good as Bonham
yeah i mean this track just never gets old, its so fresh every single play, timeless.
I love it when I hear you giggle at a song because it always means the same thing-mind seriously blown. ❤
You just won yourself a new fan and my deep respect. Ive been watching War Pigs reaction videos for almost years snd Ive seen reactors get all wrapped up in that video and totally miss the impact of the song. Drives me crazy that they put that video in there. Thank you!
You’re damn right. Reactors trying to glean meaning from the video drives me nuts. So glad Polo upfront knew it was fan-made and was already so into the music he admitted he was not paying attention to the images. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
Great video! I'm always impressed that Sabbath recorded this album in practically one studio day. The precision of all the transitions is amazing. No cuts or editing, just straight live music in studio. Legendary
Great reaction. This is the first album I ever purchased in my teens. I am 62 and I still listen to it. Incredible album.
You just showed up in my feed. I love seeing genuine first reactions to music I love to share. I'll be watching your Jinjer reactions next and then browsing the rest of your channel.
Fairies wear boots and you gotta believe me! Fun song !
Love Black Sabbath especially War Pigs!
You got me brother I just subscribed. I loved this song when I was 7 and I still love it now at 59. Just let the music absorb you and at the same time let yourself sink into the music. It's just so good for your soul every time. Keep up the good work welcome to the metal fold!
U must see this live in Paris 1970..to get the real feeling of the drums...of everything
Masterful,true lyrics, outrageous music,❤️🎼🎶🎶🎵🎵
This was pretty much the world's introduction to heavy metal, a genre that didn't exist before this. Many minds were blown away to be sure. Also, the song lyrics have many biblical references, and that cadence you referred to is that of a preacher. This most certainly is a sermon.
Reminds me of the chant of a Judaic cantor.
Hi coming from England
I grew up listening to Black
Sabbath and most Rock
Music And now aged 65 I am still listening this Awesome music all the best 👍👍
Hand of doom and Snowblind are lyrically and musically amazing
Hand of Doom is so underrated IMO
First listened to this on LP when I was about 12 back in 1993. This song is one of my favourite
The legends... the OGs... Sabbath are the Run DMC of heavy metal. They took the genre into pop culture globally. Ozzy Osbourne is the man!
The stank face really let's us know how much you are enjoying the song. Please don't stop
There is a live version of this song they did in Paris and Bill ward the drummer wears you out just watching him. A must see!
Great tune
Those were air raid sirens and you get it the drum breaks are between the acts of the song. So glad to see the appreciation still a strong as when I heard it first in 1971 .
