This is one of the all timer live recordings. Vocalist Ian Gillan , who also played the part of Jesus in the original Jesus Christ Superstar album, drummer Ian Paice, organist John Lord, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and bassist Roger Glover, they were all amazing on this.
He was briefly the lead singer for Black Sabbath, after Ozzy left and before Dio, I believe. The album with the demon baby, for sure. I remember how funny it was to me that he was the lead in both Black Sabbath and Jesus Christ Superstar (the good audio version that got radio time, the original stage recording, not the movie/soundtrack).
Thanks for this reaction, this song is 53 years old! Please check out “Highway Star” and “Smoke on the Water” from Made in Japan. They are always better live.
in the 70's I loved those songs, but to me, they were overplayed and I turn the radio station when they come on. I saw them in 1974 but it was at the California Jam 74 and it was a concert of madness
Watching people hear it for the first time is so cool because we can't imagine lol. The only downside of growing up on this stuff is then the 80's came along and it's never been the same since.
In my opinion this is the best Rock Anthem ever written and performed. No lip synching, no recorded version playing in the back, just talent. You won't find Mariah Carey singing live like that.
You know what is weird about my generation? We took this level of music for granted. We expected this level of excellence from our musical heroes. We all grew up practicing piano, organ, trumpet, violin, drums. We studied the classics, big band, jazz, the Blues. At some point in the 50's we switched to guitars and electric basses. We sang in choirs. We listened to early trend setters. We learned lessons from those that came before us. And more importantly we knew what great music sounded like. Leonard Bernstein knew it when he heard the early Beatles. George Martin knew it. Berry Gordy knew it. We were 25 years in the making and we did not disappoint.
You're absolutely right, we did take it for granted because high quality music, and talented musicians, was everywhere around us in the 70s. We had no idea at the time how special it was.
@@michaelkarlsson5966 I see your point. I suppose by definition one could say that, at the time, it wasn't special. My view is that, even though it was common at the time, it was still special when viewing a longer time line.
I agree we sure did. But some bands really stood out. Live no one could touch Deep Purple. When they were right and concert and I saw them they were out of this world. The best of the best.
Welcome to deep purple. When I was a little kid in the mid-90s we lived in Moscow Russia and we had a private driver that drove us to where we needed to be for work and school. He learned English from deep purple. I listen to every album they had. Listened to every album on cassette tape. I still have the actual cassettes. When we moved back to the States we moved to Detroit Michigan and the new thing was the backstreet boys and I didn't understand it. I thought it was junk and I wanted to listen to rock and roll. I wanted to listen to deep purple and led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and all the good stuff and I didn't understand all this new school music I thought junk lol
This performance is required viewing for everyone who has never seen or heard of Deep Purple. Their live album Made in Japan is a top 5 live album ever for me. Many great bangers. Woman From Tokyo, Smoke On The Water, Highway Star, Burn, Space Truckin, Hush, Stormbringer, Lazy just to name a few. Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are referred to as the “unholy trinity” of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid 1970’s. Great song, great reaction. 🔥🤘
I saw Deep Purple live at the Cloverleaf race track that used to be in Cleveland. It was in the late 70s. Billy Preston opened for them doing “go round in circles” That was the first time I ever heard Billy. He was so good the crowd was jumping! Then came deep purple. Smoke on the water just blew my mind. The speakers were all around the racetrack. The sound just surrounded you and enveloped you. It was magic.
OMG! I was there too! From what I remember it had rained and was very muddy. The next day my mother was doing my laundry and said there were worms in my pants!
@@sue3810 I think I had a really good buzz that day. I know I did. But I don’t remember if it was raining it could’ve been. Billy Preston was on his own stage off to the left. Purple deep purple was on stage in front. I was sitting on the track on the wide part of the oval in the back. Everybody was wasted in my group and everyone around me. The lines of cars were crazy it was like Woodstock. That was one of the best concerts. Hey sister , Glad you made it. Worms that’s hilarious! I can only imagine what your mom thought.

Deep Purple are sooo underrated and every member is a master on their intruments. They were one of the 3 grandfathers of heavy rock/metal with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Just amazing talent!
This is their masterpiece and Ian Paice my all time favorite drummer. Roger Glover is one of my favorite bassists. Overall, Purple is as close to perfect as hard rock bands go.
This live version is better than the studio version imho. This voice here is pure emotion. I was 5 years old, now almost 59 and everyday I'm listening to this masterpiece. Now, very often I'm listening this track with my 5 and 6 years-old grandchildren. We teach them great music. When they're older, we'll explain the lyrics. Great music never get old. Our youngsters must hear songs like these right? Thank you for your reaction
One of the top rock singers in my opinion. Such a powerful and wide range. Grew up listening to Deep Purple in the 70's in high school in Japan and still listen to them. Love Ian.
No other era for music that can last many generations and still sound and resonate as it did back then the 60's and the 70's best Classic vinyl and Rock
Feeling blessed to have grown up with this music . Real raw talent , lots of hard work and practice , no digital crap or auto tune or pitch correct like todays “ music”
Yeah, you are, it is really hard to find music with the same depth, talent and refinement nowadays. Finger eleven comes to mind, every album another stile, not the computer generated shit in the charts...
man i love watching you honestly react to the music of my youth , hard to pathom that there are people out there never havin heard this before but i love the reaction , and Mr Gillian still blows me away as well every time i hear him
Deep Purple put out Awesome Albums when they had Richie Blackmore in the lineup. My Woman From Tokyo, Highway Star, Burn, Perfect Strangers, etc. etc. They had entire albums filled with gold/platinum songs. Pick any song to review next and you can not go wrong.
I just bought a coffee for a 1st time song request ,I hope I did it correctly and will be played ! I 1st heard Deep Purple at a Church Bazaar of all places 16 yrs old or so. The song was Hush ,fabulous, grabbed my attention right away went out and bought the album. Little did I know I would not only see concerts but party with the incredible keyboard player and bass player years later I Greenwich CT 💋👍❤️
I was born in 1973. My parents named me after the Deep Purple record "The Book of Taliesyn". We had a vinyl collection that would make you weep. I grew up to everything from Captain Beefheart and Dr. John the Night Tripper all the way to Bach Cello Concertos. My father worked in a mine, but as soon as he got home, he would smoke a joint and put something amazing on the turntables.
My favorite song by Deep Purple is "Highway Star." Yes, it is a Driving song. Listen to it out of the car a bunch to get used to it, before you try to listen to it in the car, otherwise, you will get a speeding ticket.
Imagine getting on a plane in California and landing in Japan...late. No chance to eat, shower or clean up. Go straight to the gig....the roadies already did the sound check. Change into stage costumes and this is what happens....absolutely amazing. Past that, even.
I love watching these reaction videos when hearing child in time for the first time, your face when Gillan starts the screams the astonishment and pure joy as he continues to build I'm 67 yrs old and I still am a deep purple fan 50yrs and counting spare 29 mins for space truckin from made in japan you'll be amazed again
Ha! Takes me back to 1974 - a final year high school road trip with our funky chemistry teacher to the big smoke - ostensibly for a chem lecture at the regional University but the first thing he did was get into town to buy the latest Deep Purple album. Classic!
It's Deep Purple baby, welcome to metal blues 🤟🤘 gives me goose bumps every time I hear it and I've been listening to this track for 50 years. Thanks for reviewing it brother 👌.
Thoughtful comments there at the end and I agree. It's pretty fascinating to me. Check out Highway Star from the Deep Purple album machine head, which is itself iconic, if you really want to get your socks blown off.

We have an old boomer band who does these songs, led zeppelin etc. 50+ years of band practice, they kill it everytime. Pro tip: if you ever get to see an old man rock band in a dive bar in rural area, do it. Big Bear Bar &Grill in SoCal does it best.❤
It is a wondaful thing to see pure joy on somebodies face to music you have loved for many years ... "this will be a long video" no problem buddy take all the time you need to absorb this amazing classic ..
Living in London in the 70s, my landlady’s son was one of DP’s lawyers and he gave me a couple of tickets to see a show. As a 17 year old having lived in Africa all of my life up until then, I had had little or no exposure to rock music, this concert was my initiation to a journey which has lasted over half a century now. It was an eye (and ear) opener! I can’t forget the sensation of the bass thumping through my body, and the absolute awe I felt when I heard this song for the first time. Later saw the Mk 3 lineup with Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale (also excellent!) and was fortunate enough to be at the only live representation of Roger Glover’s Butterfly Ball with an all star lineup at the Royal Albert Hall. Ah, to be young again …
I'm so grateful you got to play you let the whole song play because I was at the concert and they go so long because we were all doing acid so thank you very much

Without a doubt my favourite song! Love peace and health to everyone for 2024.
Early 70's rock was amazing. So many great bands, maybe they inspired each other.
One of the greatest rock bands ever! Thank you for your feeling about this music, Polo. I guess you'll also like the song - Soldier of Fortune (1974)
I do agree! Live version is much better than the studio one. It only shows how amazing musicians they are!!!
I agree that the live version is better. I was born in 1967, and I’ve been listening to Deep Purple since I was a young child. ❤
One of the top rock singers in my opinion. Such a powerful and wide range. Grew up listening to Deep Purple in the 70's in high school in Japan and still listen to them. Love Ian.
This needs to be on everyone's play list
No other era for music that can last many generations and still sound and resonate as it did back then the 60's and the 70's best Classic vinyl and Rock
That`s why young people have to discover new "old" music.
Hard Lovin Man and Flight of the Rat from In Rock are 2 epic songs that rarely get reaction videos but deserve it. Who thinks Polo will agree:)
70’s rock bands are the BEST! Basic technology, just pure talent
So glad I grew up during this time. We had so much good music to listen to. Great reaction to a great song. Thanks!
man i love watching you honestly react to the music of my youth , hard to pathom that there are people out there never havin heard this before but i love the reaction , and Mr Gillian still blows me away as well every time i hear him
Sweet Child in time live. I would not have ever called myself a big fan of DP, but that track haunts me.😯
This is back when the top of the listings was MUSICIANS and ARTISTS!
All analog.
No autotune, definitely not playback!
Mmmm. I'm not sure how you think Sgt Pepper was made.
Thank you for reviewing one of my all time fav's❤.....Ian Gillan's vocals are phenomenal!! Deep purple 💜... much love from the UK❤
Thanks for expanding your horizons, you have expanded mine in good music to listen too.
My man. Really appreciate this, cheers.
Great reaction. Thank you for keeping this music out there.
"But Officer, Hiway star was on the radio".
I love your reaction to the music I grew up with. You have a good ear for talent .
Thank you so much for noticing the bass. It goes overlooked a lot
no auto tune.... just sheer talent and skill
The voices cry out. There are so many. We who were there are glad that younger ears hear.
Well said
Absolutely no ego in this. They aren't showing off.. but in .pure spirit zone.
This is amazing💜I’ve never seen this performance before, thank you
Deep Purple was the greatest collection of talent in rock!
Ha! Takes me back to 1974 - a final year high school road trip with our funky chemistry teacher to the big smoke - ostensibly for a chem lecture at the regional University but the first thing he did was get into town to buy the latest Deep Purple album. Classic!
I’m so glad you reacted to this….one of my all time favorite songs. I saw Deep Purple live one time in the 70s, in the UK, where I’m originally from.
Fortunately, I had missed this song in my youth, and came upon it maybe 10 years ago. So intense.❤
His vibrato is in time with the beat its amazing
I think this might be the best song I've ever heard...PERIOD 💜
Definitely one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Wow!
It's Deep Purple baby, welcome to metal blues 🤟🤘 gives me goose bumps every time I hear it and I've been listening to this track for 50 years. Thanks for reviewing it brother 👌.
Deep Purple is one of the best group of musicians ever assembled with a legendary vocalist.
Thoughtful comments there at the end and I agree. It's pretty fascinating to me. Check out Highway Star from the Deep Purple album machine head, which is itself iconic, if you really want to get your socks blown off.
Makes feel like I'm a teenager, again. Love it.
I love it when you react to the music from the 60's and 70's! Thanks for that!
Ahhhhhhhh and my youth comes rushing back! No more greys on my head, pass the doobie man. Thanks so much for this! 👏👏👏🥰
This is the first record i bought 😊i’m 65 years old now but still loving it soo much‼️👏☺️❤️
Made in Japan album, the song “ Strange Kind of Woman” singer Ian Gillian and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore do a “ duel” vocal vs guitar. You should have a listen
Hello folks. I was 12 back then. Played this before school after parents gone to work. Singing as backup singers ding im in goosse bumps till end, eyes wet.
Dumpster diving back of record plant weekly handed them out to classmates. So yhe whole city youth gotten turned on.
Thank you for post and the love.
Ride Easy
We have an old boomer band who does these songs, led zeppelin etc. 50+ years of band practice, they kill it everytime. Pro tip: if you ever get to see an old man rock band in a dive bar in rural area, do it. Big Bear Bar &Grill in SoCal does it best.❤
Thank you for a great video. Always wonderful to be along for the ride when someone discovers beutiful music.
Sometimes, rarely, a live performance exceeds the studio recording to a large degree. This is one of those performances.
Live is always best in my humble opinion
@@jeremymerrifield219 Really? I've seen alot of live performances that were nowhere near as good as the studio recording.
@@jeremymerrifield219live is definitely not always best. Led zeppelin isn’t great live but amazing on record.
I remember when this first came out. It was something no one had ever heard. Nice to see it's still appreciated today.
I'm so grateful you got to play you let the whole song play because I was at the concert and they go so long because we were all doing acid so thank you very much
Puts me right back at school under the sheets listening to Friday rock show. Beautiful
Someone's mind is about to be blown wide open.
Oh yippie!! Deep Purple! 👍👍
This song has always been amazing.
