You have a very interesting way of looking at music and I'm convinced you could be turned into a metal head. Especially if you went to a concert and witnessed the majesty and power in person. The concerts aren't as loud as they used to be, maybe there were lawsuits filed for hearing damage although I don't imagine metal heads would care much more sue anyone. There's nothing like the sound of a acoustically great room and the sounds that go through your body and resonate in your core. You'll never be the same in a good way. Don't trip on anyone being racist, we love when a brother gets it too. I don't even know why I said that. I guess the constant assault of the mainstream media influenced it. So forget all that and go to the next metal show that comes to your area and it's a band you like. You'll thank me later. Alright, keep up your smart and Insightful reactions. Nothin makes me happier than seeing ppl converted to metal.

At the time, harder Rock music was being attacked as being morally corrosive, if not actually demonically inspired, and the term "Black Sabbath" was pretty much designed to scare those people who were already religiously hysterical.
I think the "Prince of Darkness" label was first a poke at the hysteria, and would eventually show how Ozzie would portray mental and emotional states that people weren't comfortable with discussing from the point of view of the person feeling them.

Black Sabbath were not only innovators, they were genre creators. They are the band that every heavy metal band wishes they could be, but there can be only one. Black Sabbath was the genesis of heavy metal and the template for every metal band there ever was, whether directly or indirectly. They are every bit as influential as the Beatles and Stones, not just on metal, but on music in general. I’ve been actively listening to Black Sabbath and all kinds of great music for over 40 years, and I still got chills listening to this song just now. Due to the band’s name and dark references in their music, some narrow-minded and religiously bigoted people made the silly assumption that the band was satanic. In fact, their lyrics often pray to god for protection from evil, and predict a “black sabbath” for those who treat human lives with contempt. Just as religious people focus on the the parts of their magic story books that they like and disregard the rest, they seized upon Black Sabbath’s dark imagery and denounced them as satanic without having a clue about the context. Ozzy Osbourne, being a marketing genius, was quite happy to capitalize on the notoriety to build a massive legion of fans, using the religious nutjobs’ paranoia against them.

I agree that Sabbath added a new darkness to hard rock with the heavier bass riffs and Iommi's distorted tones. That sound is the foundation that created modern heavy metal, but I really think you should consider Deep Purple as the first major label band to get into harder rock leading to what we now refer to as heavy metal. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar work and speed is probably the first venture into harder rock. Not to take away anything from Sabbath, they were truly groundbreaking, but Ritchie Blackmore's style lead to this.

Black Sabbath are considered one of the forerunners of heavy metal music.
An interesting fact is that the lead guitarist, Tony Iommi, lost the tips of a few of his fret hand fingers on his last day at his old job after Black Sabbath got their first record contract.
This led to him tuning his guitar down so that the strings weren't as tight and thus easier for him to play, which resulted in the unique sound that inspired the heavy metal genre's sound.

One of the most amazing things about this song is that it was only intended to be a 'filler' to finish the last 3 minutes or so on the album. So Tony iommi, the guitarist, came up with the riff almost instantly, Ozzy hummed out a melody, and geezer Butler, the bassist, wrote the lyrics. They did all this in a span of an hour, laid down the track, RIGHT THERE IN THE STUDIO. It turned out to be their most popular song and the only single to chart. So to potential songwriters: don't overthink everything, just play. Another group that did a similar thing was Led Zeppelin, they created the song 'rock and roll' exactly the same way, but with Bonham initiating the drum beat

Re the Bat Biting incident. It was real. At a show a fan threw a real dead bat onto the stage. Ozzy thought is was a rubber prop bat, so he bit it's head off in true Rock and Roll fashion. Then he found out it was real. He wound up having to get a full series of rabies shots, and he was not very happy about it. But he lived. Bassist Geezer Butler wrote most of Black Sabbath's lyrics, and riff master Guitarist Tony Iommi and Drummer Bill Ward helped him figure out the rest of the songs. One of the true legendary band in Rock history.
