- Our Life off the grid has been anything but easy so far! With so many setbacks and mistakes made on our part, we are paying the price when our homestead gets hit with that brutal winter storm that is sweeping across the country. We had to deal with some extreme temperatures without our Geodesic Dome being equipped to handle them. To put it simply we froze our Butts off all week with very little reprieve and feeling like the simple life isnt that simple after all. With so much hardship dealt with this week, both Jes and I are more motivated than ever to step up our game and get what needs to be done finished so we are never in this position again. Living off the grid and trying to build a homestead from scratch is no easy task and not one we can take lightly anymore. If we are to attain our dream of having a self-sustainable homestead, we have to get a solid plan in place and start knocking things off the list. We are looking forward to you all joining us on our homesteading journey as we progress toward our shared dreams. Keep Growing everyone..

We Were Not Prepared for This Storm | Our Life Off Grid - Розваги
You must think 6 months in advance FOR EVERYTHING, even hand warmers.
Heat stack lg rocks on wood burner at 6 pm, remove hot rocks to safe place, stack more rocks.
Put up blankets around u bed, enclose with small opening near woodburner, safely, put hot rocksunder bed. Think hot water bottles.
good ideas
For your car, put cardbord on windshield, use wipers half way, put socks on wipers, mirrors.
Spray pam on door rubber seals, duct tape door locks.
I actually finally got the tools to fix the window
If you run out of food, just let them go. They’re not gonna leave.
Lot's to be Learned in this Household!!
No argument there
A sack of charcoal set aside somewhere in the most humid part absorbs not only odors, but humidity
Hmmm never heard that one
You might want to put in a trap door next Spring.👍
Right... one exit is kinda scary now that we got stuck
Good idea!
Cuídense del frío aq en Cali nos estamos quemando del calor mándame un poquito de esa nieve
Hola Georgina 🥰 it's getting warmer today 🤗
BTW, if you want to supplement with propane, find a heater with a chimney, and plumb it outside - That means it has a heat exchange, which means all the wet burn from the propane will be going out the chimney and not into the living space. The wood stove will easily take out any other condensation otherwise.
Honestly I think we are just going to avoid the propane heater from now on. Cause more problems then it was helpful
Glad you guys didn’t turn to ice ! We as well we’re definitely freezing an all out water too . Please don’t hesitate to call us if you need anything!
Thank you 😁 we are glad you made it through this cold as well. It's been nice this week though
You definitely need to address that door issue. My suggestion would be to use a hand planer to remove a quarten inch of the wood in front of the door.
Additionally, i would cut a hole in the floor and build an escape hatch. Cant have only one exit in there.
Yea the one exit could end up posing a problem
That insulation cover in that dome must not be working too good. Here's a idea. Build a small 12×12 log cabin this summer so you can stay warm next winter. Lol summer dome, winter cabin 🙂. And a Escape hatch.
You are hell bent on us building a log cabin lol
Everyone is!!!! Yall could have built a fully insulated cabin for cheaper than that Blanket Fort. @@OffGridGrowing
In the mountains in TN they built small log cabins due to the winters and the kitchen off the back northern exposure for summer so it wouldn’t heat the house as bad but in the winter it would be the coldest place and it wouldn’t get overly hot in the winter. It worked and had a large open fireplace to keep soups warm for a long time and just add something new each day to change it up. You can’t go wrong with good wood and a cabin.
Smart idea to cook potatoes that way. Living in E Tenn we usually don't get much snow. Like to see it and then its time for it to go. Great video.
Thanks you 😁 let no coal go to waste lol
How much knowledge have you learned in the past year when it comes to off grid living and preparedness for me. Enough to write a book yet. Each passing year gets better. and the freedom is worth it. Best of wishes
Thank you brother 🙏
I loved your potato cooker. Great idea!
It worked and why not right 😉
I always keep enough wood for three or four days when a storm is coming in case that happens to me I always watch the weather and if bad weather is coming I make sure I have food water and everything I need for me and my you need to stock up on feed and wood for your animalsbe prepared. Your guys are doing a great job.🎉😂
Yea this year will be way different in how we do things.. That's for sure
Awe hang in there guys you’ll. Figure it all out. Don’t beat yourself up
Yea we will be ok.. Just gotta keep pushing forward
Amen
Love me some Galvanized potatoes... Yummy
They were delicious
The propane heater you were using is not mint to be used in a totally enclosed structure, aside from the fact that it puts out Carbon monoxide as it Burns, it throws a lot of moisture into the space, in your case right into your walls, you need dry heat, add a ceiling fan to better distribute the wood stoves heat, and if you need to add another heat source, consider one of those Chinese diesel heaters they blow dry hot air, set it outside, in a box to keep the elements off it, and to let it pull air from , and exhaust to the out side, and pipe the heat into the dome. Your door freezing is an easy fix build a plexiglass mud room at your entry, with an inward swinging door, you will still get the light you want, and the dome door will be protected from the elements. Your floors are going to be cold until you insulate and properly seal that portion of your platform under the dome, you also need to skirt it with insulation to keep out the wind.
Jes likes the mud room idea and I'm hoping that when we insulate the floor the wood stove will be enough. I'm looking into options for Skirting.. What will be cost effective right now
Hello from the mountains of western Virginia! I think we're all definitely ready for spring 😂
I second the skirting, even if it's something temporary like a heavy duty tarp or used billboard vinyl. We finally skirted our RV this winter and cut our heating costs in half.
Great ideas!!!
'Sandwich idea' pizza toastie.
Pizza sauce on both breads, your fav toppings and cook.
Is it possible to add more insulation under the dome platform? Or even a hatch so you at least access the wood underneath when the door is frozen shut?
We need to add insulation period under the dome.. Just waiting on this warmer days to allow me to spray foam... Pizza Toasties 🍕 sound awesome
Glad we all are making it thru these storms
Thanks Tina 🥰 we have no choice but to
I personally think you should just turn that into summer hang out / guest house. And in time buy a larger shed for up top and turn that into a home.
A few people are saying that but We have so much, well all of our money invested in this dome.. It would be a hard hit to just abandon it now 😔
❤️☃️👍👍👍stay warm.🙏
Think warm thoughts 🤔
Glad you guys are doing fine and have some food, I bet after this cold snap is over that you all will be better prepared next time
Oh absolutely... Not going through this again, at least not like this 😉
The woodstove alone will dry your building up. Keep it on high for a while.
It helps for sure
Proud of you my friends!! It has been a rough one!!
Thanks Buddy and yea it's been rough
Reach your arm out through door, chip ice , open door enough, more chipping, no need to call 4 help.
Those sandwiches looked amazing
We love those sandwich makers... So good
It’s better to dry your food on a racks. It’s faster on the woodstove. I do it all the time.
What kind of racks do you use?
Love the cast iron thingy ! Definitely looking into this
Right lol they are really useful and can get creative with sine fun hit pie things. Hope all is well
Sandwich ideas…grilled cheese and tomato soup!!
One of Jessica's favorites
I've been worried about y'all with last week's temperatures, can't imagine your geodome being well insulated... glad you made it through! Sending ❤ from Oak Ridge
Yea it was a brutal week but we made it through... We have some work to do to better prepare
When warmer area get some insulation under yert so you guys can be warm ❤
That's absolutely the plan
You guys are doing great!!! I know it's discouraging at times, but you will get through this. Much love ❤
Appreciate the encouragement 😁 we will prevail
I believe you have 20 acres there if I remember correctly I'm thinking you could use some of those tree's for a log cabin they are very warm with a stove or you could build a old fashioned fireplace on one end
That would assure that you won't be cold all winter long just a thought
A few people mentioned that but this place was logged some years back and larger trees are far and few between
Guys I just saw info on spray foam on sub floor. Rotted out the folks floor. I'm sorry your dealing with all of this I understand the struggle.
Now we have flooding
Oh no is the flooding under control?
You should also find a way to block in underneath your home like. Put walls on a ground so wall. So wind can not go under it under it.
Yea we are looking for an affordable way to do that
Maybe pallets, hay, brush!
Guys, have you thought about using bubble foil under the floor? It's pretty cheep and can be stapled to the floor joists .. a 16x20 ft roll is only around 20 dollars. And it beats cold air blowing in the floor boards. I totally understand broke life. I live on 867 a mo so... But bubble foil is better than people think and it would break the air.
Yea we are gonna be putting some tarps up if we can't get the spray foam done soon. You are right something is better then nothing
Its been a cold one for sure.
But today will be warm so yay 🤗
❤
😁
At least consider a small single room cabin for emergencies. Never hurts to have a back up to your back ups. Cold kills and dangerous to make mistakes during that time!
Yea maybe build a log cabin or something for emergencies
Stick a fork in the potatoes to chk if done
The sandwiches looked delicious
They were really good.. my new favorite way to cook In the wood stove
Mountain pie S'mores... just put chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and Graham cracker crumbs in it 😋
Oh heck yea now that we have to try that
Build a roof on your porch over the door and anywhere else you don't want ice to build and accumulate. That way you'll be able to open your door .
That is something I think we are absolutely going to do. We need a mud room anyway
@@OffGridGrowing Do you have only One Entrance Door to your home??
@@gailcurl8663 for now
My heart goes out to you guys. I still believe in you guys and I know yall got this, sometimes the hardest storms we weather have the greatest outcome. Here in Central NC we have reached single digits with the windchill and man I'm over it. And I'm not off grid. Something I do with my barn in the winter is put up plastic in some areas that are exposed and it makes a huge difference especially when the sun comes out. I wonder if you was to get some thick plastic and put underneath to help block some of the wind coming up also since heat rises maybe the sun can help, also id get something even if its hay bales or rolls even a tatp something to block the north and west winds. Just an idea. Yall are in my prayers please stay safe. Peace and Blessing
Thank you so much and we actually have some large tarps on the way to help block the wind..
Roughin' it! Here in the city w da infermo masked 1'z. Nature Peeps!!
Surviving
In front of your frozen door, cut away about 2 or 3 inches of the porch floorboard. It will be enough for snow and water to drain and not lay there and freeze.
That's actually a smart idea.. Thank you
Great idea!
Weather is going to break soon!!
Thankfully
When I was pregnant with my first child in 1989, I was living off grid and my Husband was away at boot camp for the Army. We had a harsh winter and I had to go out and collect my own firewood because all I had was a fireplace. It was miserable. I had no energy because I was pregnant and sick. I started burning stuff in the house when I ran out of wood. I didn't like that wine rack his mom gave us anyway. lol. I could feel this video. I hope it gets warmer soon.
I can only imagine how hard that was and the wine rack comment lol priceless 🤣.. Warmer days start today
very cold
But almost through it 😁
Why don’t you skirt the Geodome like people do in RV’s even if just plastic to cut the wind coming under and up. Also I use a Hygger double quartz fish tank heater. I have tanks just like yours. You could also use a commercial bubbler to keep your tank from freezing.
We do plan on skirting the dome for sure.. Just waiting to get supplies to do it 😁
Glad it will be warmer temps soon. I truly hope and pray you can get something for your floor very soon. Keep each other warm. I am thinking about you and praying for you as well. If you have mushrooms, a mushroom, cheese and maybe some kind of meat in those sandwich makers would sure be good on a cold day! Or, maybe try making mini meatloaf in them?? I don't know, it might work! Take care!
I like the mushroom idea... Going to try that for sure.. Tonight is the last night before it warms up. We will be ok 🥰
Oh man. I’ve been thinking about yall a lot. It’s 5*F here the last several days.
Yea it's been brutal here the past week but we made it through 😁
We had some days in the negative
I’ve been praying for y’all ! ❤
@@sunkissed5889 Your prayers worked 🥰
Although I think you guys are doing a great job, I think you need to prepare more of what you have more water more wood more feed more propane more of whatever you need you wanna always get extra build your stock up get extra water. You may be stuck there for weeks who knows
😁
We are working on making our systems better and better 😉
East Texas here. Wood stove on our deck helping keep our dogs warm during the freeze. Space heaters inside our trailer. Dont use propane inside without ventilation. God Bless warmer weather and you two and your beasts❤
Thank you and yea we are done with the propane heat for sure
, trial and error is the best teacher , ❤
Agreed
Everthing oké with the both off you and the doggs? ❤
Yup we are doing good my friend 😊 be seeing you soon
I’m your follower from Kentucky. It has been terrible. I know you all have really suffered. This cold has been unbearable. Prayers for you all. Looking forward to this next week to be warmer.
Yea I can't wait for this warmer weather.. It's almost here
I wonder if you could use the reflectix insulation wrap on your water tanks. Or even emergency blankets wrapped around them
Gonna be looking at some ideas to insulate the tanks.. We went without water for a few days
@@OffGridGrowingMaybe insulate the inside of a box and put that over the tank. Wood box.
So I was taught rainwater catchment by one of the best in the US. The black wrap will attract solar heat so that is perfect. After 15 years I have never had a tank freeze solid. He taught us it is the valves that are the issue. But you can sometimes go in through your top opening and break through the ice and pump water out of the core. It very rarely is frozen. We were -9 here with a -26 wind chill and we have been colder. That cover will help a lot because of the black color. I also make sure if I can to place my valves facing south, with very little blocking that southern sun in the winter. Those are always my first valves to free up. We have yet to find any way to keep those valves from freezing up and we have tried a lot!! So remember to try to get to that core from your top opening. A drill can help. Some tubing and a pump or some way to pull it out. This is what I was taught.
Geodesic Dome are the wrong choice for winter living and are not much better than a thick walled tent and are for use in warm climate conditions. Your stove is not near large enough to put out the heat you need to stay warm in that dome. I lived all my life in Appalachia and we only used wood to start a fire and then we would burn coal for our heat. Coal burns longer and puts out more heat than wood could ever put out. For burning wood only i would cut up more wood than i would need to get through snow and a cold spell. Do your self a favor when it warms back up in the spring and build you a nice warm house or buy the portable buildings and finish the insides. Wood and coal heat is all i knew for the first 13 years of my life and our house stayed warm except for some cold mornings the floor would be really cold to your feet.
Simple suggestion, may help with the frozen door in the future. Cover the door and over the deck in front of it with polyethylene, attach at the top and maybe held with sandbags on the deck. Then, you should be able to just push it open and slide the ice off. Maybe even a Contractors trash bag split in half and duct taped at the top would work.
That would probably help.. We were also thinking of just enclosing a little mudroom area as well.. Your way is probably cheaper to start though 😉 Appreciate it
You learn from mistakes I am sure but I can imagine your frustrations on the dome. Do you have enough food? I can’t imagine you can live at one tosti in a Day!!! Wat Don’t you make a link for send my Some coffee. Everyone that can give you money!!! Maybe for Jess Some quality thermo clothing!!! Please let my know!! Your both amazing ❤
Yea really frustrated, but at the same time we are not letting it get us down.. Buy me a coffee I just heard of that a few months ago and you are right it probably would be a good idea to make a link. We eat frugally but have gotten used to it now lol.. We both really appreciate you ❤️
Toast ya a good ol peanut and jelly sandwich.
That was the first one I tried.. Delicious 😋
Do you have a way of covering your window? We have a geo-dome at our homestead in Northern AZ at super high elevation. Our 1st winter, I wanted to give up until we got the suggestion of covering the window. Made a huge difference.
Also, watch the water / condensation on your insulation. It can lead to mold. We ended up replacing it. But we bought foam board from lowes and secured it to the frame and reinstalled the factory insulation. We don't have that issue anymore.
Hope this helps.
We do have the curtain it's just we need to fabricate something to attach it with. The original part is missing. Ok now that info does help. I think we are going to have to replace the insulation fabric..
Our first shelter God mold so bad we had to abandon it and thus was our option. Would suck if we have the same issue in the dome.. appreciate the advice 🙏

Apple pie filling with shredded cheddar is delicious. I grew up in Western New York and we called the Sammie’s in the pie irons Hobo Pies. I’ve been in Lancing for 17 years and this pat weeks weather is not normal. This was a rare situation. Hang in there, you’ve got this. Your doing great!

Thank you Lou Lou we are not getting discouraged at all.. Just gonna keep pushing through
Stay positive hope your friends are doing ok
Everyone is doing OK and as good as can be 😁
in Morocco, in Spain in Southern Italy all houses have a ventilation system that allows them to be cool in summer and warm in winter! study what the wind tower is, in your case, if you make a hatch in the center of the floor, which allows you to go down under the dome and underneath create an anti-bear net that protects you in case of danger. from that hatch you can create the conditions for air conditioning in summer and better heating in winter, protected from ice.
Thank you... I'll look into that info for sure. My neighbor is from Morocco so I'll probably ask him about it
Thinking about you guys! Very hopeful the weather breaks and you guys are able to get your foam underneath.
Thank you 😊 hopefully this week will allow us to insulate. Until then we will push through
I have a couple of those you can even do cinnamon rolls in them or pizza sandwiches. You can even do like cream cheese, and fruit or apples.😂 I’m getting hungry
I like cream cheese and going to try that tomorrow lol
@@OffGridGrowing you’ll love it😁
I hope Jes is feeling better!! Nothing like being sick when it’s so cold ugh. I’m so sorry I missed the live premiere tonight! The dogs looked like they were loving the snow! Really hope your ducks are handling the weather and using their enclosure! Stay warm friends!!!
She is feeling pretty crappy but hopefully she feels better soon. The dogs really enjoy playing in the snow and its cute to watch.. how are you doing?
@@OffGridGrowing please give Jes my love. I really hope she feels better soon. This cold weather is effecting everyone. Me included ugh. Just praying that we can all defrost at least a few days before the next freeze up!
Hi, I just found you tonight. I admire your stubborn will! Those sandwich makers were a staple for my family while camping. I think that tuna/cheese melts would be delicious. Do you use salt to melt the steps and deck snow or is it too cold for that to work? I hope that little structure is enough for the ducks, for warm shelter and from predators. I wish the best for you guys and your critters!
Welcome to our channel ❤️ and stubborn will is what keeps us pushing forward 😁. We haven't used salt buy just be chipping away at the steps to clear them. I plan on building something better for the ducks. It's just temporary until I can get supplies for a better house..
@@OffGridGrowing I was remembering the movie The Day After Tomorrow and there was a part where they had to have a small tent inside a building, and I thought that might work for you guys so you could sleep warmer and better. I was also thinking about the old days in England and the curtains around the beds at night for holding warmth. Think Ebeneezer Scrooge, lol. I have actually seen bed tents and they look very cozy. Anyway, stay stubborn and enjoy those taters, they look delicious!

"You can do anything, but not everything." -Motivation
We learned the ventless propane heater lesson last year. The condensation buildup is definitely an issue. We have to run a dehumidifier when we use ours to keep the humidity under 60%. I’m sorry you guys had to learn this lesson the hard way 😩. Glad you made it through these frigid few days!! ❤
Thanks and yea we won't make that mistake again... I want to avoid mold at all cost
If you have a tent set it up near the woodstove. It will keep you guys a bit warmer and before you go to bed boil some water, poor it in some water bottles and stuff them in your blankets at your feet.
And if your looking to add to your sandwiches a bowl of hot tomato soup would go great with them. I like to dip my grilled cheese into mine. 😋
I think until we get this figured out the tent idea is a good one for the meantime, but luckily, the weather is warming up this week, but who knows for how long
@@OffGridGrowing that is good to hear. Best of luck to y'all.

I'm guessing you can get those stains out with a steam cleaner. I can't help but think the stains are a warning from the angels to turn the propane heater off. I worried about the carbon monoxide it would give off. I'm glad you're safe and making the best of it. You all are getting slammed weather-wise. Wishing you warmer days. Snuggle with the dogs, they'll keep you warm. Y did u not pour a little hot/warm water out the door to thaw the ice?
We had only a few cups of water in our Tea Kettle.. Everything else was frozen solid and we had no wood left to heat anything up..
Unprepared. Not cussin you, bruh... But you'd be way better off in a camper with a 4wd pickup to be able to get off the mountain. Foremost, you need to at least temporarily lay plywood down on the floors to stop the wind from coming up. Some sort of sheeting, any sheeting would stop the drafts. then a skirt under the deck around the footprint of the yurt - visqueen would be fine for now. Those two things would immensely improve your situation, and can still be done right now. THEN the stove would keep it hot. Still no good- That thing ain't insulated to speak of... but you'll winter. Best of luck
I don't disagree with you.. It's a financial problem we have and can only do what we can.. We are doing our best with what we have
@@OffGridGrowing Go get you some lumber covers from your local building center - They throw them away, they're free, and lay them down on the floor and cover em with rugs... It will help a ton. Opinion based
@@OffGridGrowing, uh, duh.
Its times like this i bet you wish you had a trap door , you need a vent near the top to let moisture out and one near the bottom to let fresh air in . and yes you should write a book because you will be qualified to do so, and if you can afford it buy a dehumidifier that will suck the moisture out of the air and you can use that water for plants but not for human drinking , eggs and baked beans toasties , once you move to the raised platform for sleeping it will be a bit warmer for you in bed and clearly your losing heat somewhere , and time to build an entry tunnel so the weather doesnt stop you coming and going from your dome. but as you said just keep plodding along if you were in suburbia you could get all these issues fixed but then you would be broke and not be able to afford the roof over your head. you made the right choice its never gunna be easy , but it will get easier as time goes by , keep up the good work . love to you both .
