  • With the past months being wrought with dilemma after dilemma, we finally had a week full of problem solving on our Off Grid property. Even though the weather is changing back to warmer temperatures, we officially have insulated the underside of our Geodesic Dome. Now that the Dome has become our home, getting resources built closer has become a priority. We started by building a new compost bin for the waste from our composting toilet. Not only are we making progress on the homestead but learning so many new things. A new friend comes out and shows me how to trap beavers which in all honesty made me feel like a real mountain man. We enjoy delicious venison pasta and enjoy each other's company living a simple life. Our off-grid journey might have a lot of setbacks, but our accomplishments really give us the confidence to believe we can make it living this lifestyle.

    Looking good. A big project with great benefits.
    My Aunt made the best squirrel pot pie. It was like a stew and she dropped squares of homemade noodle dough in it to cook.

    Good job filling the gaps, now put 100 - 200mm fiberglass /rockwool up in under the floor to really insulate the floor but only under the dome. Idea with the rain run off, cut a 4 inch gap right around the dome to allow the outside dome coverings to fall in so gavity flows the rain water away

    • @OffGridGrowing
      @OffGridGrowing  5 місяців тому

      That is actually a really good idea to cut a gap.. Just would have to move the water away from underneath.. It's an idea

    You should've left the tyvek in place and sprayed from the top to fill in cracks if you wanted, and then sprayed underneath to cover everything. No need to pull out what was already a wind barrier.

    • @OffGridGrowing
      @OffGridGrowing  5 місяців тому

      If I left the Tyvek up and sprayed over it, then I risked losing the insulation if the Tyvek fell..

    I think the spray will work! And the insides being closed to air and outside cracks not being blocked should hopefully let it drain better too…venison is also my favorite meat. Least processed available. No added anything through their whole life. AND if you teach yourself how to tan the hides you have blankets/leather.

    I think the floors look like an old fashioned cabin and not bad at all (at least on video)! Some rugs will help but most importantly you’re going to be able to keep the dome temp better controlled!! You got a TON done this week! Can’t wait to see how the beaver traps do! Much love my friends!

    glad to see you finally filled in the gaps on your floor and to see just how happy that one thing made you, it was a lot of work but clearly worth it, kangaroo is my favourite red meat its lean rich but not over powering and goes great in a slow cooker as well as in a pan or the bbq. its great to make a spag bog with as well as steaks and kangaroo tail soup is awesome too.
    pitty the beavers were creating so much havoc because you could have used the raised water levels as a source of water and it would be good for your land but then they do go too far and then it becomes an issue. we dont have beavers in Australia . maybe because water is so scarce here the outback is so dry , so happy you have made some good progress and your happy with the results thats what makes it all worth it .
    keep up the good work guys.
    David from Perth Western Australia

      Kangaroo? I didn't realize people ate them but I'll take your word that it's good lol.. The beavers contaminat the water and you can get sick by drinking it. The beaver fever it's called.. I tried yo let them go but they are causing issues of late..

      @@OffGridGrowing well yes Roos as we call them are a nuisance to farmers eating all their crops , and as there as many Roos in Australia as there are people in America, they are the dominate species here , well in numbers anyways , so we hunt them and it still doesnt make any différance, so rather then leave dead Roos everywhere we kill them butcher them and eat them and we export the meat too . better then crocodile meat, well yes i spose the water would be infected with many things if beavers live in it , i didnt think of that, but water purification sterilisation it could be drinkable . but thats a story for another day , do they have any natural predators , the closest thing we have to beavers is the platypus but they cause as much harm to the environment as beavers. have a magic day my good friends stay warm . its been in the mid 40's here thats celsius . 43 the other day . cant wait to see your next video.

    You both have come so far this year! You endured several living space challenges from the camper to shed and the dome. Now that’s all behind you and whew! What hard work and patience!!!! I’m so proud of you guys and I think you have the most valuable channel for off gridders available because you show and share with us ALL of it. The good times, sad times, the blues, the fun projects, the gardening trials and triumphs, the step by step accomplishments…. It shows us the reality of what we are Actually up against with the dream we all have to be self sufficient… it ain’t easy… but it’s worth it. And I find so much value in seeing what works and doesn’t work. There’s channels who show land that’s immediately pristine and elaborate cabin builds and all happy times which is counterintuitive for those embarking on this journey and thinking it’s all rainbows and butterflies… which it’s not.
    That’s why appreciate y’all so much. And I love you guys and I’m over here cheering for this huge accomplishment of insulation!!!
