  • Permaculture & Homestead Consultant Kerry From Strong Roots Resources visits our Off Grid Homestead. We asked for help in better understanding our land and some guidance to help put us on the right path to self-sustainability. Learning about our soil to ways to winterize our garden are just a few of the things we will learn. We also celebrate the arrival of a new member of the family (potentially) with Rezzi, a rescue from the shelter Jes works at Moco Mutts. Things have been in our opinion slow going on the homestead with so many setbacks these past few years but we are committed to learning everything we can to achieve our goals of living a simple and beautiful life Off Grid.

    Some ideas, don't know what's best for your situation:
    Flexible brown color caulk in every crack installed from the top, first, before the foam underneath.
    Or painters tape along every crack from above first before spraying below.
    Or rigid foam core insulation boards cut to size to fill between every joist then spray foam all the remaining small cracks

    • @OffGridGrowing
      @OffGridGrowing  8 місяців тому +1

      The painters tape idea sounds doable for us 🤔 thank you and great idea

      all great ideas! I would go with the foam board underneath then foam in the cracks.

    I have tried regular hilling for my potatoes as well as Ruth Stout both under wood chips and straw. My best yields came from under straw. You can't beat the ease of harvest with Ruth Stouts method!

    You should find some large rugs from the thrift store or carpet and cover the floor. It helps a lot with the air leaks and drafts

    Apply bubble wrap 1/4inch to the bottom of the floor first, then foam below that.

    Sweet pup. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Here in TX, we would put down tar paper (about $35 a roll) on the floor and put plywood on top of that. The tar paper would keep the spray from coming through. If you don't have the money for plywood now then that might not work with dogs running around. Worth a try.

    OMG GS!!! Shush don't advertise that too loud! I hope you're blessed with that plant! I was hooked on a series; I think it was called ginseng wars or something like that. Apparently, a property owner may have lost her life to poachers. They stopped televising so I'm not sure what came of that. But it was fascinating to watch. Apparently, China was paying a hefty price for it. I imagine Jess could come up with some of her own tinctures. That'd be right up her alley and a sweet little business too. But those doggies need her. 🥰 They are sweetie pies. That was smart to get advice from a consultant and reassuring to hear from a professional that you're taking the right approach. I have no doubt you're going to have bumper crops this summer. In fact, you might want to start collecting those canning jars. Yeah, that's the ticket. LOL God bless and Happy Holidays. I'm just catching the end now. I'm sorry to hear about your UA-camr friend Sidney. Frankie Off Grid also mentioned Simple Life Portugal. I'm so sorry.

    • @OffGridGrowing
      @OffGridGrowing  8 місяців тому +1

      Right we can't advertise the GS to much but it's here for sure.. We have had poachers here before. China still pays a hefty price for it but we want it for our own medicinal purposes. Sindy was an amazing person for sure

    What you need to do is cover your floor with 7/16 OSB plywood .. Cher the whole floor, you only have a subfloor. Then you can add vinyl, carpet or what ever .. put skirting around the out side to keep air out from under the floor

    • @OffGridGrowing
      @OffGridGrowing  7 місяців тому

      Definitely going to need to plywood on the floor before we can put the final floor down.

    You don't have to heal up potatoes if you have loose 6 inches of gravel below your potatoes I don't heal mine and I leave mine in the ground all winter I cover my garden beds after everything dies off in the summer I cover it all with leaves and then when I want to get potatoes I go up and dig them a potatoes when I need them that way I don't have to store potatoes in a root cellar or anything like that I don't lost two potatoes last year that went run as long as you got ground that the water can run through and you cover your beds with leaves and then after the next year and summer you just turn those leaves into your soil and then replant again plus with the leaves on top all the worms stay in your bed garden bed same way as my beds for garlic I'll plant my garlic in November cover them with leaves not straw and then I usually plant the garlic straight down the middle of the beds so I know where they are come around next year I will turn the leaves into the soil and implant whatever else I'm going to plant in that bed I need three beds probably 30 feet long one is 40 feet long and I just plant garlic right down the center of each bed because garlic is supposed to keep bugs away and I get really big garlic Be and beside a park all the way around one side and bound the back we have a lot of Maple trees so we get a lot of Maple leaves and instead of raking the maple leaves off throwing them all over a fence and getting rid of them I use them on my garden works great plus my beds have wood before dirt in them too so that helps out too

    one thing you can do to slow air infiltration is staple vapor barrier under the floor on the platform. it would be a cheap stop gap to keep you warmer over the winter. so sorry about your friend, you will see her again in paradise

    GOD BLESS YA ALL.... YES I HEARD ABOUT SINDY THROUGH NICK ND ANDREA . BRINGS BACK THOUGHTS OF MY SISTER PASSING FROM CANCER IN 2015 AT ONLY 53. SIGH........ SUPER KOOL TO HAVE YOUR PROPERTY LOOKED AT, AND YOU HAVENT MADE ANY MISTAKES, ITS ALL LEARNING, THAT CAN BE STEERED INTO MORE SUCCESS. TRYING IS LEARNING. YOU BOTH HAVE GROWN SISCE THE LORD BROUGHT YOU INTO MY LITTLE CAMPER WATCH TIME, AND I SMILE FOR YOU ALWAYS. RESI IS SO SWEET😊😊😇. I DID A LITTLE TEMP TEST THIS MORNING, ON THE FLOOR IT WAS 55 DEGREES, AND ON MY 6 FOOT CEILING IT WAS 61. HUGE DIFFERENCE, IN ONLY A 6X8 SPACE. YOU WILL APPRECIATE THAT LOFT!! THE SPRAY WILL HELP SEAL. BUT I WOULD PUT R31 8INCH AFTER THAT, IN THE FLOOR AND COVER WITH 3/8 PLY MAYBE IN SPRING. I HAVE R21 6INCH INSULATION IN MY DRY STORAGE BUILDING AND VAPOR WRAP, HUGE DIFFERENCE. BE BLESSED!!! MERRY CHRISTMAS BROTHER AND SISTER.🎄🎄❄❄🙏🙏👍👍

    Get yourself some rabbits I'm sure you know about rabbit poop won't tell you about that but I use that in All my beds and I give it to people bags of rabbit poop for quite a bit of money If you let your rabbit poop build up underneath the cages underneath that wrap up poop is thousands of worms should also good for your garden and good for your chickens high in protein you don't have to eat them though🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Very good video as always keep up the good work and read my comments please I'm not lying I've learnt over the past four years about straw and hay what bad stuff comes from it cover crops are good and leaves are good don't use hay or straw If you do you straw hay use only local straw or hay that way you're only bringing the weeds that come from your area you straw and hay from different parts of the world you're bringing in plants that don't belong
