Award-winning engineer George Massenburg recorded the sounds in Superior Drummer 3 at Galaxy Studios in Belgium. He utilized Galaxy Hall (the studio's main multi-purpose room), which is renowned for its near-perfect acoustics. Over 230GB of raw, unprocessed sounds were captured with eleven surround microphones, for playback in stereo and up to 11.1 surround. Massenburg used nothing but world-class gear, including mics from Neumann, Sennheiser, Ehrlund, Beyerdynamic, AEA, Sanken, and Schoeps.

if only e-drum manufacturers could get this same quality of sound into their modules
@Hungry Bamba they probaly could if they put toontrack superior drummer 3 text on the module but then the modules would have to cost more and toontrack would have to get some money from the sales
@Hungry Bamba They could - they'd just have to either license an existing VST, ala "Mimic Pro", or just record their own drum samples with the same quality.
They could, but it doesn't really matter either way. If people want the better sounds just go with a program like this and use your laptop as a module. Modules are always going to be limited anyway unless they practically make them like a mini computer but that's why it's better to just hook up a laptop.
Superior Drummer cost already 300$ without module. So of you put it in module, it would be very expensive
@@tombodineau9509 no i dont mean put superior dummer itself in the moduels, i mean just be abe to have the same quality of sound as superior drummer 3 on a drum moduel

I'm just a viewer.
Nick is really an awesome drummer, and a great presenter. Love listening to the guy
That Bob Rock at 17:03 sounded impressive, something I never heard before on any other software.
Great software and great demo. I liked a lot the fact that you loaded and played the default kits so that we could hear them work in a real musical context. Thanks a lot for this review. Hoping to have SD3 soon!
Some seriously impressive sampling from the Toontrack folks.
@5:53 Ludwig. All the Cream songs. Sunshine, crossroads, white room. I want THAT!!
wow, the toms have the sound of the snare rattling as well.
The ayotte snare sounds amazing.
Got my Superior 3.0 upgrade via Sweetwater (been using Superior since 2008). You are a hell of a presenter, man. Killer vid!!!
And an excellent drummer!
First time in so many years of electronic drums and its programming, that I hear the snare respond almost perfectly, the attack and style of the drummer, with the funk example I heard perfectly the ghost notes and the positioning of the drumstick in different places of the snare drum head.
I love how he still waits to the cymbal decay to start to talk again despite of using a edrum
Must. Have. This.
Nice-It's about time someone made great- neat sounding preset kits.
Great video ! Thank you 🙏 Sweetwater, you really have become an excellent power house of a musical instrument company ! 8:32 - changing out sounds. 10:40 - Mapping sounds
Looks and sounds fantastic. Can't wait. I wish I had the need for 11.1. Maybe one day.
These guys are fast, the software isn't even out yet.
65 Drums Well, Sweetwater had, like several music media brands, exclusive access to the software as they were invited by Toontrack to Belgium already in March where they were introduced to the software. Anyway, they did a great job like always. Nick is a fantastic drummer and presenter.
I guess this is a no-brainer for me, Huub. ;) Of course I will as I use Superior Drummer 2 and EZDrummer2 almost exclusively for the last years.
you gotta buy..
65 Drums you're correct

Thanks Nick, lotta fun for sure
This is a deep world I've just entered, thanks Nick for the pro tips
Terrific tutorial. So complete and informative. Great drumming as well.
Can't wait to get my hands on SD3!! Love that backing track Nick is playing to, 23:35 reminds me very much of Carry On My Wayward Son.
Impressive demo! And funny too. I'm listening on computer speakers, but can tell by the look on the drummer's face that it sounds awesome.
Holy crap I need to get SD3...those sounds are incredible!
Nick, you're the best... Thank you
We have the best chocolate, and recently the best recording studio. Belgium, small but proud country. Great video!
Wow! That is seriously impressive
Sounds sweet!
Great demo Vic
SO stoked the 'tuning' knob has changed. Trying to get the tuning right on SD2 was always impossible as it was so sensitive. Can't wait to give this a spin.

Love your Demos on Sweetwater and all the Spock's Beard Material.
I'll definitely be upgrading from Ezdrummer. Great demo!
Wow That Bob Rock.. rocks lol
those sound amazing
I was looking for a sample library to overlay my church's digital drums with, I think I found it.
Great Vid! …just wish there was some info out there about SETTING UP e-drums in SD3. Many of us have non-default sets, and it's quite annoying to get them adjusted properly. Not a lot of help in that area.
Very impressive
Hi Nick. Couple of questions. I noticed when you click on a drum it just highlights it for editing/replacing and does not play the sample. Can you still hear the sample if you click on the head of the drum or do you have to hit the pad on the e drum kit? Also, can you preview sounds before you change them when you are selecting from the drop down menu like you can in SD2? It looked like you had to select it and then hit the pad to hear it in this demo. I hope that's not the case on both of these questions cause that would be strange. Thanks!
Hi Nick... good info on this video.. Can we hear some Snare and Rim work (Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa)?
Thanks!
NICK IS SUCH A PRO :-)
Thanks!
This all looks great - for portability, what amps or amps would be recommended say for rehearsal or small gig? Gigs with no large PA?
So excited for this! It's driving me nuts. Toontrack is the real deal for sure. I am wondering if this will cause them to phase out the EZ Drummer line though. Not sure how they could make a new version that could be easier than this. Time will tell I guess.
Phasing is main issue with the superior drummer products.
Every mix the drum have weired phasing issues in a mix
@@colinparks619 you can change phase in the program or in the daw.
Can you tell me how to go from using the tone in my Roland module to Superior. When you showed the video, yours automatically switches tones, but for some reason I can’t get mine to change. What am I missing?
Hey I noticed that hi hat pedal activity shows up on the GUI. Is this new to SD 3.0? Will the VH-11 hat have similar results?
MIDI premapped! Sold!
thank god for midi drum software, it makes buying an electronic kit worth it
Nick - any idea if the crashes can be mapped so you're able to trigger an edge crash or a top ping sound with 2-zone cymbal pads? I know at least one of the older SDX had crashes that you could map like that (I think it was the Music City SDX). Thanks for the great demo video... can't wait to get my hands on this!
That Ludwig kit is out of this world!!! I can hear Ginger Baker or Carmine Appice slammin those old Big Ludwig kits. ! It’s worth the $300 crossgrade just for that kit only...to me....I’ll be playing Cream songs all day long on that kit
How many different cymbal articulations are there in Superior Drummer 3? Are there bell, bow, and edge for all cymbals including crashes, or just bow and edge or just edge? I have a hard time finding this info or a list of info for the cymbals like they have for the drums.
Galaxy Studios is in my backyard 😎
The video I’ve been looking for!!! I got get good drums!!! Cheaper and sounds way way better!!!
The freaking CYMBALS sound so good. It is disgusting how much money I will now have to spend. I MUST HAVE THIS
Question; You mentioned a couple times about the different drum brain/model itself being an option to pick, but all I saw on the drop down menu was different Edrum 'brands' - not the brains/models themselves
11:20 ish
TheLambIsGood There are little differences like with a roland td20(?) and above you have the different areas on snare and ride, which can be picked up by SD3.0 but other than that I know of no reason to buy a better drum module.
Hi, wondering what audio interface do you use to have no noticeable latency play realtime?
I have EZdrummer 2 and I am disappointed that I have a quarter second delay using EVO4 audio interface. I am not confident in spending the money to upgrade to SD3 until I know I can play without noticeable latency.
I use a rme raydat in a desktop lowest rtl available latency is in noticed monitoring sd3 through my daw! Also the older hdsp 9652 also does a great job but retired it when I upgraded my pc but you can still build a 9th intel i7 searching for a board with legacy pci slots! That’s what I used before I went to a12th gen intel i9 unfortunately no legacy pci on any modern motherboards Cince 2018
Nice... can i ask something... I'm intending to use SD3 to trigger from
my edrums and play live with it. So, is it necessary to install the full
package? I suppose it is when you are intending to record and mix at
the most professional level, but for now I just want a really nice
sounding edrum kit to play live. I've already got EZdrummer 2 and I like
it, but i've read that the whole playability is a lot better with SD3.
thx very much in advance
The basic install, around 43 gb is fine
Hi what can you tell me about the lattency playing live? it seems there is no lattency when you play with the td 50. i have a td30, do you think i will have the same lattency with a macbook pro?? thanks
This is what I needed I’m starting from scratch first I have to pick a kit, then purchase superior drummer then a laptop lol but I love drums so it’s an investment I’m willing to make. Are there songs to play to in the program?
I bought a Roland kit for the hardware, 3 years ago. All due to the fact that the "pandemic" had set in and my acoustic kit wasn't going to get played much, w/o my wife killing me, lol. I say that I bought it for the hardware, as I knew the factory sounds were lackluster at best before I made the purchase. But Roland makes the most durable electronic pads in the industry, hands down. It is frustrating to pay over 3K for a TD27KV, plus expansion pads and have such unnatural factory sounds. I have played through GGD or stock sounds, that entire time. The main problem with GGD, is that the Hi-Hat CC learn function, is extremely touchy and basically a massive headache, to get any decent sound out of the Hi-Hat. Finally taking the plunge on this software, as I've seen so many other reviews, where the Hi Hat Functionality is so much easier to set up with SD3. Being able to adjust the HH articulations manually, through the entire travel range, is a massive deal. Can't wait to dive in!!
Will there be a smaller/lower bit-rate version for those of us with small hard drives? Cheers!
The drum sounds are fantastic. Cymbals samples are near-perfect. I've owned multiple e-drum kits and Toontrack 2.0, and my only issue is the FEEL of e-cymbals. I would love to see the manufacturers work on getting their cymbals to have a more realistic response and feel. Other than that, most modern e-kits with mesh heads are just as good as playing on an acoustic kit.
Have you looked into Field electric cymbals? If you want cymbals that feel real and trigger great, these are what you want. They are made of real metal.
John Ryan Had the same issue.. Roland is and always has been the #1 company for electronic drums. And their own cymbals felt heavy and unnatural. Now Roland is releasing a new set of thin e cymbals, coming out next month. Super pumped for that
Are your electronic Drums single zone and if so does the software compensate to add more zones for a more human feel ?
What about doing separate outputs for each drum? What interface is needed for that?
Hey, Orlando Backline Rentals & Cartage. Thanks for your interest. It’s really best to use a module with direct outs for that purpose. Such as the Roland TD 50 or the Pearl Mimic Pro. Those offer the outputs needed.
I hope this helps.

Sounds perfect now I just need a laptop.
Hey Nick ! Can I combine the best of two worlds from the TD-50 and SD3? I wanna play SD3 via midi from my MacBook. Do I have the full features of the roland multizone snare and ride ? Thank you
Thanks for the question, Ralf. The TD50 with the USB pads does work in tandem. So anything you are doing with SD3 is of course going to be MIDI, which will be translated via the pads and brain. Positional information is sent via MIDI, as well as high resolution velocity information. If you check the MIDI implementation chart it does detail that information:
www.roland.com/global/support/by_product/td-50/owners_manuals/8075ee4f-867d-4f8e-bf76-20778dbbe2a5/
Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Great video. Did anything change as far as using generic mode inside of the Roland TD50? When using MacBook Pro TD50 goes offline when in generic mode. Looking at my MacBook sound output it doesn’t show up at all and neither inside my protools. But it seems to work in Vendor.
What would you recommend for the scenerio of a TD-30 Kit and a good processing Laptop, but low storage? Id like to play w/ the superior drummer 3 but I am afraid of latency and loading problems when I use it from an external hard drive
Hello, Fynn. Plenty of folks do exactly this! I recommend at minimum 8gb of ram and an Intel i5 or greater. Obviously, more on both fronts will speed up load time.
Thanks for the interest!
Cody Kraus, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 1766, cody_kraus@sweetwater.com
I've found that solid state drives, for system and USB (along with ASIO sound), virtually eliminates latency.
Nick is a beast of a drummer. Could sell ice to the Eskimo
Hi Nick. Excellent demo and playing, thanks so much for the detail. Would you explain how with the straight forward hookup fromTD 50 to SD3 how you achieve such good volume levels from the Kits/Samples that you were triggering. I've SD2 at present and triggering from TD30 or TD50 results in very low volume levels unless I increase pad sensitivity to high levels (not desirable as playing dynamics are ruined). Any suggestions or fixes would be welcome. Best regards, Bob Jenkins
Did you ever figure this out? I just submitted a case with both roland and SD for same issue. Seems like a widespread issue. This demo is one of the reasons I bought my TD kit and upgraded to SD3 so its frustrating when it's not even usable due to low velocity. Seems the roland module and SD velocities are matching but just very low. You can hit a drum as hard as you can and it still only registers 70 or so for velocity which will translate to real time low volume or midi performance low velocity after your finished recording in a DAW. I've tried other DAWs and have same issue so I am guessing its something in the module. Adjusting pad sensitivity doesnt seem to be the answer since the kits in the module sound fine and loud
@@GregSummersMusic You need to increase the USB Audio input gain, explained here: ua-cam.com/video/89LSAx5QBeg/v-deo.html
Hello guys. I am also having issues with my TD27 module and SD3. I am connecting my MacBook Pro with an USB-B to USB-A cable, and the connection is established but the sounds when hitting the pads are low and totally different compared when mouse-clicking the virtual drums. Could you solve this issue? This makes SD3 unusable. Thanks in advance!
Could you (for instance) assign a splash to a rack tom using SD3 and a Roland kit? Td-25kv to be specific...
I've noticed on a few message boards people complaining that can only use tom samples for tom pads, cymbals for cymbals ect when using the Td-25kv module. Can you work around this in SD3?
Thanks for the question, SIR. On the built-in sounds you are limited to the category of that pad… kick sounds to the kick pad, etc. But in Superior Drummer you can select any sound you want via the MIDI note that you are triggering. So yes, to answer your question directly, you can do what you are suggesting. Thanks, and let me know if I can help with anything else.

Hi! Is it possible to record midi with sd3 and have the audio playback of the samples muted while recording? This way I could get the most out of my cheap system :P
I can listen the native td-12 sounds while recording without the latency issue.
Hello, Pekka Varis! You can achieve this by bypassing the output of your Superior Drummer channel in your DAW. How to do this exactly will vary depending on what DAW you use.
Thanks for the interest!

@@sweetwater Thanks! I try to find the detailed step by step answer for this in cubase forums. If I do not get it by thursday I just play around with different mute / bypass methods in cubase.
Cubase support answered: "Mute the Audio Return Channel in the MixConsole. If you use a basic Instrument track with the only one output, Mute the Instrument Track in the MixConsole." This is great! I try this soon..
What kind of sound card interface is been used in this video. I have tried Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 second gen, but are srugglin with the latency
Same.

Install and choose ASIO for sound, and lower the buffer/latency as far as possible. Solid state drives (system and USB) are a huge help, too.
Hi. Thank you for this video! Which Roland kit would you recommend under 1500 us$?.?
What happened to an upgrade price from SD 2.0? Why would an upgrade price be time limited? I still purchased 2.0.
Is there an update on the TD-17 now ?
whats a great kit to use for triggering? the atv looks nice, but i'm a hobbyist and not sure i should spend that sort of money.... thanks
Really good tutorial, I am just trying to figure out why he never played the RIDE,.
Anyone know if the maps Toontrack provide for Roland TD-10 will make use of positional sensing on the snare?
While at it, do they also provide drum brain maps for the E-Z drummer line?
Thanks for the interest, Chris. Not sure on the maps with positional snare sensing, but if the brain supports it (which, pretty sure the TD-10 does), that should work. And yes, there are E-Drum mappings in EZ Drummer, as well. Of course, it is very simple to remap as needed. Let me know if you have other questions.

I can't distinguish this from real drums anymore. If you make me listen to those songs he's playing here I'd never guess it's samples. Toontrack have really surpassed themselves. There's no reason to play electronic drums with anything else than this software. In fact Roland should release their drum modules with superior, there's no reason to use their crappy machine gun sounding technology anymore.
THIS. Roland has too much pride to just make a version with SD3 onboard. It sounds so good though, that if they did, no one would ever buy anything else.
@@iloveNgany It's not pride. If anything what Roland is doing is really great R&D that might outdo any samplers in the distant future.
Due to the sound being syntesized, you can create an actual different sound per hit per distants. You can't mimic that with sampling.
It sounds terrible but it still plays more fantastic and more realistic.
That said, with the TD-50 you can still get decent sounds out of it. It's actually being used by some pretty big musical/broadway productions in my country.
@@annekedebruyn7797 it sounds terrible but plays more fantastic sorry you lost me at that part sister 😂
@@iloveNgany How so?
Samples often sound odd due to a sample being too loud or too soft for that velocity.
As the Roland sounds are procedural, it sounds more to what you expect from a certain hit.
If you are just drumming for the sake of drumming, high end modules are way better at giving that realistic feel than even the utmost high end samplers.
Obviously for recording you don't want the module. I am strictly talking to playing.
@@annekedebruyn7797 yeah sorry I'm not catching what you're throwing. I've played the high end roland modules and they always sound 10 times better through superior drummer. My ears dont lie.

i have Roland TD9, but the hi hat does not respond correctly when i use inside Reason 9.5, a work around is to set midi control pedal cc to mod 1 and hh compatibility TD9/TD20
Is the "Humanize" feature carried over from SD2? It sounds a little machine-gunny to me on certain kits and especially on the toms
I have a Roland TD-1K. When playing with Reason's Kong Drums, I can't really play anything faster than 1/8th notes because the midi doesn't trigger. Now is that the kit's problem? Just wondering because playing Superior Drums with the TD-1K would be awesome.
Well, I answered my own question. Bought SD3 yesterday and there is zero latency.
Hi Guys. Not a new drummer but newish to electronics. I have a slightly tired but fully functional Roland TD-12 but the display has died. Am I right to think that this module can just be used as a slave trigger for SD3? Is there any latency going through a laptop or can I use a 5 year old Toshiba i5 Laptop? I was thinking of buying a new Roland module but this route sounds like a better solution, am I right? Thank you.

Nope, you’ll need to buy the whole package first and then spend more in expansions

So can somebody explain to me how you actually get these sounds from the computer to the drums?
Midi from the box on the E-drum kit (if its capable) via Usb B to Usb A cable to your computer
That's really interesting. Now, IF ONLY someone had thought it was important to make a video explaining how to make an electronic drum set actually send a signal to Superior Drummer so the drum set could play those cool sounds. Why has nobody ever thought we might want to know why the drum set isn't talking to the software when we connect them with a USB cable?
There's other video's out there if you're not tech savy.

PLEASE HELP… I cannot figure out how to get my TD-17 to properly function, most notably with the cymbal choke capabilities… So far, everything Ive tried has only allowed me to get the choked cymbal “sample” to be on one of the cymbal zones…. So whether I hit it with a stick, or pretend to choke it, the result is the same.Even if I did keep it that way(I never would), its still not even that usable because it usually triggers the sample again before I can remove my hand from the cymbal.
