  • It’s been long overdue, Superior Drummer 3 has just been announced. But the REAL question is, should you buy it. Let’s break down what’s inside. Here are the 14 features you should know about:
    1. Everything was recorded by George Massenburg In Galaxy Studios in Belgium.
    2. Inside SD3 there are 6 Kits, 25 snares, 16 kicks, and 33 cymbals.
    3. The dowload is 230 GB (Thankfully it's broken up, you don’t HAVE to download all of it)
    4. Everything was recorded in 11.1 that means 11 mics where used for every drum you hear placed at different heights around the room.
    5. You can finally detach elements of the software from the main program and drag it over to a secondary monitor.
    6. Rescale Window (in SD2, you couldn't resize anything)
    7. Superior Drummer 3 is backwards compatible with Expansions Packs from Ezdrummer 2 and Superior Drummer 2.
    8. There's Drum Replacement Software included (They call it TRACKER) you can blend the samples with your previous recording as well.
    9. SD3 lets you import 3rd Party Samples
    10. There is adjustable Bleed from other instruments
    11. Macros edit section
    12. There's a selection of about 350 Electronic Drum Sounds
    13. Midi Trigger Default Configs Presets for different electronic drum brands, including roland/yamaha/alesis/kat/millennium/ect.
    14. Hardware Requirements:
For Macs and PCs: Multi-core Intel processor, 8GB RAM or more recommended, 236GB disk space (additional 55GB needed during install)

I think for people that trigger VSTs with an edrumset, SD3 is a must. EZD2 is not good enough, the hihat for example does not work as well. IN SD3 you can adjust the trigger settings.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 років тому +1

That's true. I've never gotten it to work 100% perfectly in Superior Drummer 2 either, but I've heard it's possible to dial it in perfectly. I just havn't figured it out yet.

    • @remsim
      @remsim 6 років тому

Totaly agreed. In ED2 no midi learn function, you can't adjust snare side stick volume, hihat control is not good enough.
BFD 3 is much better than ED2. But now SD3 is way better than BFD3. So i'm going to upgrade from SD2 to SD3 and move BFD3 to trash...

Vdrum Tips yeah, that's great. I had the feature in bfd already and it was just a question of time that Toontrack would adapt it ;-)

65 Drums wouldn't it be great if Toontrack would integrate the possibility of designing several drumkits that can be called up by midi?
That would make SD3 the perfect Tool for E-Drummers under Live Condition!!!

So what's your opinion on Addictive Drums? Is SD3 the best or is it a personal choice?

I started with EZD2 and then upgraded to SD3 and it is awesome. I love the fact that I can map the pads to what ever I choose with my edrum.

Thanks for sharing this info. I own EXD2 and just found out about SD3. In response to your question, I'm just a hobbyist but I'll be buying this upgrade just because I can. I'm one of those guys that just like to have everything available at my fingertips "just in case" I have some brainfart or want to tweak some small thing.

I have SD2 and I bought a cross-grade to SD3 and downloaded the whole library. I was impressed with the new interface and the way it could be resized (huge oversight on SD2) and all those sound libraries were a new box of toys. I have a TD-20 with VH-11 and the Roland 3 x zone Ride and I could find no real-world noticeable improvement in how the MIDI information was processed to the end result. After spending a couple of weeks with it, I had a huge lightbulb moment...
I had originally assumed, any reservations I had with my SD2 installation would be magically transformed with SD3. How wrong I was. The ugly truth was, I had jumped into SD3 without *really* trying to push SD2 to its limits. What I mean by this, is what happens via manipulating the sounds in the software itself or in a DAW. There were no issues going to be fixed by my limitations of module and e-drum hardware in SD3, it was always going to be about the sounds. Again, the ugly truth remained, despite all my time in studios since my first juvenile experience in 1984, I still knew nothing about compression or EQ and that is folks, where the magic lies - especially if you’re producing drum tracks for musical collaboration.
On its own SD3 is an Aladdin’s cave of solo drum sounds, which is fine if you want a drums-only studio playback experience. However, if you are trying to produce something that will sit within the sound layers of guitars, bass, vocals and keyboards, then you’re really going to have to accept that your skills will be better used in learning how to make a Bass Drum sit with a Bass track so it doesn’t occupy the same frequency and can be heard without simply pushing its volume up.
So for me, I quickly figured SD3 wasn’t going to do this for me and I had everything I needed in SD2 but seriously lacked in my own personal skills in post-production. As such, I sold my SD3 license and started to learn about processing the samples in my SDXs in SD2. Many producers still use SD2 to capture a performance and then work their magic later on in the mixing. So for me, with no real benefits interpreting what I was playing via my module into a DAW, SD3 was no improvement for the money. I already had great sounding raw takes using SD2 so my focus has since been learning on improving my post-production techniques.

    • @thedrumdoctor
      @thedrumdoctor 2 роки тому

@@soulgirl62 If it is the stand-alone SPD-SX pad, you cannot import the sounds from the SD software. You have to trigger the sounds via a computer from the pads. This is done via USB or MIDI lead.

Great video! Totally agree with you, there will be some guys that need/want total control over their drums and will definitely get this one. I use EZDrummer and by combining pieces from different expansions I am really happy with what I got, especially because I'm not the best when it comes to drum mixing, so it saves me a lot of time having already processed samples that really sound great out of the box.

I am now at a place in my career as a drummer where I’m thinking about this
An e kit full time at my place and superior
I was at the launch of deprive way back , well at least the United Kingdom launch and was super impressed
Years later I’m now looking to be creative for myself and other with drum software. Nir Z I know was very involved in tracking the drums for superior and he is incredible in his style of playing for that.

This is defiantly more for producers and studios. I like the idea that you can mix everything in the plugin but it's also another mixing DAW inside your own DAW to learn how to use. I use EZdrummer, Logic Pro/Garageband Drums + a few others. I'll upgrade eventual, but not at the moment.

I used to use Superior Drummer 2, however, I switched to Addictive Drums 2 when I lost my vision at the end of 2015, because Superior's interface and the fact their expansions always changed the kit layout and arrow location, made it impracticle for making it accessible for screen readers. The fact there are no keyboard shortcuts didn't help the cause either, and introducing a resizable window made it worse. Additionally, the system requirements are those of a fancy computer, so not only would you need a good module to trigger the VST, you'd need to spend a good bit of money on a computer to house it, then well yeah.... Eek!

Definately going for SD 3... I own EZD1, SD2, and Addictive 2. The kits of SD3, from the demos (specially that Yamaha Snare) sounds like nothing Ive heard in either of the softwares I own. Im looking forward for the 3rd party sample importing feature. Now all I need is a better edrum set - still banging on the very first DTXplorer (though Ive upgraded snare to 3zones, and 2 extra 2 zoned crashes). I got my eyes on the Alesis Strike (hoping to increase the sensitivity and responsiveness of my edrum experience). Thanks Justin for your awesome videos, greetings from Denmark

I did have a few the problem is most people talk about with The hi hat but after the 1.3 update and some trigger adjustments it works perfectlyI customized the stand a little bit too i’m already wanting to expand and possibly get the easy drummer two and also I have some old drum shells that I’d like to convert into electronic drums to add to the kit I got an old pearl bass drum and a floor Tom I was curious what triggers you recommend that might work the best with the Alesis software.

Really great review. I own both Ezdrummer 2 and Superior Drummer 2 which I use for song writing. They both work well for me except the non re-sizable interface makes life difficult, especially on a laptop. They could and should have given existing customers an update for a re-sizable interface. After all, we spend heaps on the expansion packs with them. Anyhow, I will be upgrading to version 3 soon, as I really want that re-sizable interface, and no doubt will enjoy all the other new features that come with it.

Really nice in depth look. Thanks!!! I own Steven Slate SSD4 and Room Sounds Kurt Ballou library. Love them both. Hate working in Kontakt player which makes me like SSD4 better but SSD4 is easier to route and you can have save, more than 1 splash and china without opening up a whole other instance of the program. Neither pack has cool effects cymbals like stacks and stuff which makes me want to possibly sell them both and just give superior 3 a try. But thats a hefty decision.

Been using Steven Slate Platinum for a while now. Runs fast and sounds awesome. It really makes playing my TD30K a lot more fun (it is a sick drum set to begin with) to play around with and practice. Love the Green Day (playing along to The Ramones all day long) and Metallica (that snare is wicked). I am saving my bennies for the next Slate update... It works for me. I am tired of being disappointed with gear. I'll stick with what works.

I've been using Native Instruments Kontakt drum packages (Battery 4, Studio Drummer and Abbey Roads60's Drummer, 70's Drummer, 80's Drummer, and Modern Drummer. Prior to purchasing a TD-30K kit, I recorded 6 albums using these VSTs and either banging on keyboards or Alesis Control pad, then editing the performance in Logic Pro. Since I've had the Roland Kit, I haven't recorded anything, but I find that Roland drums really mix well with music, as opposed to VSTs which require tons of processing to really mesh with the music. I like the sounds of Native Instrument kits, but it's a real hassle to get it set up with the v-drum kit.
So having worked so long with VSTs and only recently getting into V-drums, I find the Roland sounds really good and versatile, once you figure out how to reprogram your own sounds. Too many people are bashing V-drum modules, but getting good recordings out of VSTs when mixed within a full song context can be very challenging.
It's nice to be able to just turn on your module and jam, rather than having to fire up your computer, software, select the kits, mess around with settings, etc. The immediacy is why I got them and why I play every day. If you're recording, having a full sonic arsenal is important, but for practicing and rehearsing, the module is just fine.

Hello Justin. I do own Addictive drum1+2, SSD platinum4, recently I bought SD 2. This is for sure far out the best drum software I own. I always buy my music gear at Thomann in Germany. It's the greatest music store of Europe and with a great service. I ordered my SD 2 with some SDX packs when it was for sale with a discount a week or so ago. They all came in nice boxes and cd-roms. But with license number I could also download the software from Toontrack themselves. But maybe I'm old fashioned, I like when I have the software on CD-roms to, it feels more secure!🙂👍

What am I missing? I can't seem to get low latency. I want to play my TD-30 with SD3 to trigger the sounds and play live. Also recording with the USB into a Mac Pro. It's a 2009 that I upgraded the processors 3.33 8 core, 128G memory, PCIe SSD Mercury Accel E2 start up disk, Audio Drive SSD etc
I have the USB plugged direct to Mac but it doesn't work well, even without Protools or garage band recording. It seems like I've tried all the suggestions but I just want to use the SD3 sounds to play and record with but MIDI seems to be lagging. Any ideas?

I'm still learning SD2, and now this? It looks fantastic, and $200 upgrade isn't bad. I'll have to watch some more videos on it before making the change. My go to kit is the Progressive Foundry, so at this point upgrading isn't going to change my overall sound kit I use. ..but I'm intrigued. Probably better to wait. The one thing I do like is the graphic changing. At least now I can see what type of drum I selected (DW, Tama, etc.) . Cheers!

I've got SD2, Roots, Slate, EZ2 + X packages. Not being a drummer, I'm really looking fwd to SD3. Song Creator in Superior is what I waited for among other things. This upgrade will also be sort of a 'consolidation' of drum resources, since I've been working with SD2 and EZ 'edit play mode' + Song Creator. With SD3 it'll be an 'all-in-one' for me which I'm happy about.

As a longtime user of SD2 and SDX's, I will be upgrading without hesitation. The addition of drum replacement technology is almost worth the price, alone. This is for basement recording studio use. If I was an e-drummer and just doing live performance, I would likely be OK with EZ Drummer 2 unless I was also doing a lot of demo recording.

I use AirMusic Strike. I like it because the grooves sound very musical . I can modify the sound easily and edit the pattern easily. Although the drum beat is at the center of everything I create I would rather spend the $400. on more arpeggiating synths like Preditor 2. If I were to move towards selling tracks , I might go for it. Thanks for the clear, real information in your videos.

Just bought a TD-11K....I have the cash to buy SD3. I've played acoustic drums almost exclusively my whole life, although had a stint with a very old Pearl E-kit and the HD-1 from Roland. I was very disappointed with the HD-1 sounds, but needed it for apartment living at the time. So, with the ability to use these sounds with the TD-11K, I feel like I might get the best of both worlds..almost. I think you may have talked me into it...I won't be moving the kit around, it will be used at home. I already own a computer that can handle it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but once the sounds are triggered and saved...I can go back and adjust/change the sound of any trigger..correct? That seems very cool to me if true. I'm hoping to lay some tracks down for my son's tunes as well. I'm thinking this will do the trick nicely. Any thoughts you might add?

I use Superior Drummer 2.0 and I love it. My primary use is for e-drums so I am very interested in what enhancements have been made to S3 on the E-drum front. I am not very interested in the "plug-n-play" type stuff that they talk about in the marketing- but I guess it would be cool if programming the Hi-Hat was a little easier. If my brother and his wife weren't visiting this weekend I probably would already have S3 because, whether my playing is worthy or not (not, definitely not) I really love what Toontrack does and the extremes they go through to get it right. Oh well, going to see the Vikings (??) instead--for the people complaining about the price-tag I will let you know how it compares to a football game after the Vikings lose to Tampa Bay. :)

Hey dude, I'm pretty sure SD3 will have the "X-drum" feature (use different kit pieces from different expansion packs), but honestly, I've been waiting a long time for this, so I will be buying it, no question...
You wouldn't believe the amount of $$$ I have tied up in just drum software...I didn't buy it all at once, but over the past 8-9 years, I've accumulated a lot of stuff...I also have some unique kits I made using drum tracks/samples my internet buddies recorded & sent me...
For me, space isn't an issue, I have 6tb of disc space in my computer, with 16gb ram & only one uses USB2 (the others are either internal sata or usb3, which is almost the same as internal), so again space isn't an issue...If it were, I'd just get another hdd...lol
I have a monster setup (for me), with all the drum samples I have, the e-kit, guitars, amps, pedals, cabinets, mics, etc, I'm very fortunate, but I also worked really hard to get all this stuff...
It'd be hard for me not to buy SD3, especially since my other Toontrack samples will work with it...
The "tracker" feature comes from a program Toontrack discontinued called "Drumtracker", which looks quite nice & has been updated from the old version (and yes, I have it too)...
A couple of weeks after I buy SD3 I'll post up a review & share my thoughts about it compared to my other software...Sorry for the long post, but just wanted you to know I'm not a newbie with the software, I'm a newbie drummer that up until a few months ago, programmed most of the midi by hand...Now I'm trying to play it instead...

I am completely new to this ind of software but will most definitely be buying it. I dont have the room on my current HDs so am waiting for a 1TB SSD M2 to arrive from amazon.
Maybe in the future I will get myself a VAD706 or something of similar standard. I want to get as close to accoustinc as possible but that will obviously cost money. An accoustic is just too loud to make use of where I live.

I play yamaha DXTreme3 with a Macbook and Superior Drummer 2. I am buying SD3 in 6 days, hoping to overcome some of the shortcomings of SD2. I also own a vintage set of Yamaha Maple Custom acoustic drums, but prefer the electronic so as to remain quiet at night.

I have SD2 and it's great. Triggered by edrums.
The triggers look better than SD2, particularly the hihat, it also appears to be easier to trigger centre and edge hits on a snare drum for example.
Also much more drum manipulation available on a more user friendly GUI.
I don't think that all the new effects modules are that necessary for a user who has a range of 3rd party VST plug ins and who mainly uses their DAW for effects.
I think the Tracker feature is really cool, now I can replace all my bad drum microphone placing from years ago and give an old tune new life.
The new core library is great (much bigger) but the download is going to be epic. 230 gigs!!
I don't think I am going to download the surround options any time soon as I am not mixing for movies.
All in all I think the improvements are well thought out, just going to have to download them bit by bit.

Trying to decide between Easy Drummer 2 and Superior Drummer 3. Just converted an acoustic kit and am currently using Roland TD-11 modules. I want to escape being tied up to those modules and want a professional sound. Do I use a mixer from my laptop or can I go out from laptop to any module such as a TD-10 module? Trying to learn this as quickly as I can.

I have the SD3 upgrade it does sound great but don't be fooled there are still issues with triggering VH11 hihats and miss triggering. I'm going on three days trying to get this dialed in. I'm planning on the Mimic Pro, SD3 is fun to play around with, but for playing live a module is the way to go! Too many things can go wrong with a laptop.

Yeah I am going to get this. I use SD2 now and am very interested in testing the new options on this software. It seems to me that you won't need to spend 1000's on a new module with this software. That is a savings right there. So at 400 bucks it is a steal. Problem is I have a DM-10 module that has its own limitations.

Ok, I’ve been playing drums for close to thirty years now, I know, I’m getting to old for this.. NOT! Anyway, I’ve used Roland ekits here and there, but about 5 years ago decided to go all electric. I have a Roland TD-30 full v-drum kit that I’ve been using as my main playing out/ gigging kit. And yes, if you take a lot of time fooling around with all the effects, sound parameters, mic placement, different rooms and sizes etc. etc., I’ve found that just by using what’s on the module itself, I can configure pretty much any drum kits to sound just like live acoustic drums or make specific kits to sound exactly like any artists song recordings I’m either just listening to or for playing live shows etc. I now have a Roland TD-50 fully customized v-drum kit and instead of spending hours/days working on one drum set, I’ve been thinking about trying my hand at VSTs especially from everything I’ve heard about Superior Drummer 3. And yes, I’m one of those kind of people that must have the full Monty, go big and in debt..lol! I like having choices, OCD will do that to ya. So now the fun part, I have no clue where to start with going about doing this since Ive never done it before. What advice do you have for someone like me who’s about to pop their cherry with VST? I have a short attention span, so the shortest/easiest explanations would be appreciated..lol! I’m not getting any younger and I want to broaden my horizons more with edrumming. Anything anyone can seriously help me out with getting started using VSTs with my edrums is greatly appreciated and I thank you all in advance for your time.

Hey man Id be happy to try and steer you in the right direction. I'll try and give a short breakdown of what you need to know, and it anything throws you let me know and I'll try and get back to you.
      1. Digital Audio Workstation or DAW for short. You're gonna need one. It's a software package, and there's loads to chose from - Ableton, Logic, Cubase, Protools, Reaper, Studio One etc. I recommend Reaper, it's brilliant at handling VSTs, and makes tracking your ideas a breeze and is just all around some seriously powerful and customizable recording software - and you can trial it with full functionality indefinitely, and a license is only $60 if you like it.
      2. You'll need a piece of hardware called an audio interface, and preferably one that handles MIDI if your Roland module doesn't output MIDI over USB. Focusrite and Presonus are pretty reputable, but you can find interfaces from loads of different manufacturers.
      3. Setup. Connect your audio interface to your PC. Connect your speakers to your audio interface output. Connect your edrums to your PC if USB, or to your audio interface if it uses MIDI cables.
Install drivers to your computer for both the audio interface & edrums if required (some hardware is plug and play).
In your DAW settings, set your audio device to your audio interface, and add your edrums as a MIDI device in the MIDI settings.
You should now be able to create a new track in your DAW, arm it and set the input to your edrums, and in the FX section of your track add Superior Drummer 3 (for example). You may need to enable monitoring for your track too so you can hear the output.
At this point you should now be able to play your edrums, and Superior Drummer will recognise the incoming MIDI and be outputting samples. SD3 likely includes a profile for your particular edrum kit, however if you have customised it then you will likely need to spend a bit of time in SD3's settings mapping your specific drumkit to the software.
If your drums put out MIDI over USB and you're wondering why you even need an audio interface, this is to minimize latency which is pretty much mandatory if you want to be able to hear back what you play in real time.
There is a great channel here on YT called Reaper Mania that has a super easy to follow beginners guide to Reaper if that will run you through everything I talked about. I highly recommend that if you decide to go with Reaper as your DAW.
      Good luck!

Hi. I've been using and enjoying EZ Drummer 2 for a few years. I'm 63 years young and I only play Rock N Roll. As much as I love Neil Peart, I'm not able to think or write like that. Give me Don Brewer or Ringo Starr and I'll be more than happy. Thanks for talking about EZ 3. I don't think that it's for me. Again Thanks and Rock On!

I"m considering the upgrade from SD 2.0 but I can't seem to find the answer to a key question. I use a TD-12 with a 2015 MacBook Pro (loaded) and the software runs fine after I did the firmware update on the TD-12. BUT, I have issues with velocity from the triggers on my V-drums and the software, about half volume to clicking a pad with my mouse. I'd like to know how to fix this (nobody seems to know for sure, except to increase the velocity on the drum brain). Also, I understand that SD 3.0 has drum brain mapping for all the Roland gear, which I presume would save me having to remap a ton of things. Love to know if you've experience the velocity issue or if you've used the mapping feature on SD 3.0. Thanks!

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 років тому

That's all just settings adjustments you can make. You can adjust the trigger sensitivity in the Module and in the software. And as you said they even have specific mappings built into the software for each brand and even a few drum modules. I just bought SD3, still experimenting. When I figure it all out I'll make a tutorial video.
