Join us today, as we explain the basic setup of hooking up your electronic drums sound module (Roland TD-17 in this case) to your computer / laptop to trigger Toontrack's great sounding EZ Drummer 3 for a massive expansion of flexibility & some epic sounds 🥁💥
It really is quick & ez (haha), if you are using a Roland TD-17 / TD-27 or TD-50X module, you can even use the module for direct monitoring ("vendor mode"), without the need of an additional audio/midi interface.
The kit setup in detail:
drum-tec diabolo limited kit (grey oyster)
18" bass drum
13" snare drum
8", 10", 12" (not used) toms
13" floor tom
drum-tec hardware
Roland TD-17 sound module
Roland VH-10 hihat controller
2x Roland CY-14C-T crashes
Roland CY-16R-T ride
Roland CY-5 cymbal

Just purchased this for my TD 27. HOLY COW, my E drums are now perfect. In love with it
Are you also connecting your laptop directly to the module just like in this video?
Omg that "Bright Room -Open Kick Roomy Kit" is AMAZING
Are these examples all unaltered from EzDrummer 3?
Fantastic!! 😍 I love EZdrummer and use it for years with my Roland TD17 KVX. Seeing this video made me question the abilities of my Roland PDX12 snare pad - so I called the drumtec hotline and within just a few minutes I had all my questions perfectly answered and two days later I received my drumtec Diablo 12' snare/tom pad which plays and works so much better (and hotspotless!!) with the TD 17 and EZ Drummer 3! It is such an improvement and sooo much more fun!!! I wish I had done it sooner! Thanks so much, drumtec!! 🥰🙏👍
Hands down best Drum software sounding on the market.
Never have I clicked on a drum-tec video so fast.
;-D
I'm thinking about converting my acoustic to edrum. Is the td17 modules worth it over the alesis striker pro se modules? I would like to set the ezdrummer also.
Amazing video, I never thought to turn off the local control!
Sounds really great man!!!
Sounds great.
I have TD 17 and the stock sounds are ok but this is a great idea to improve my kit. Cool thanks.
Thank you!! Can you make a tutorial how to connect the TD-17 to Native Instruments Studio Drummer, Kontakt or Battery 4?
This video is the GOAT.
Damn I want that set!
You can find irt over here :)

Kind regards!
So does setting td17 as monitor, put the track playing through cubase into your headphones on the td17?
Is there any major improvement to trigger EzDrummer 3 or SD 3 with a TD-50 instead of a TD-27 ?
I would love a video like this for the ATV aD5 module and how to cut down on the latency to a macbook and back. Thanks! :)
Hey Oliver, generally speaking it's the same procedure, you'll just use an appropriate midi mapping preset for the aD5 inside of EZD3.
Latency is a problem of the CPU/audio driver setup, you have to make sure your cpu has enough power to process the outcoming audio at the lowest buffer size possible without any audio clicks/artifacts.
If latency is still too high with the buffers all the way down, your bottleneck is the audio driver of the interface, which might be too slow. Kind regards!
Incredible! That’s a really nice kit you have there. I’m sure it’s beyond my budget at the moment. Curious if a lower end Roland kit would be decent with superior drummer 3. I’m a guitarist and interested in adding a Roland kit to the studio for use with SD3. Looks to be such a time saver over programming drums.
Generally speaking, yu can use any kit with a module that has midi output. To get good results, triggering & playability need to be very good though, so it should be a Roland brain indeed. Kind regards!
Disfruto tanto estos videos!!! Estoy armando mi propia Batería DIY, espero que quede al menos un 10% de lo que es tu set!!! Saludos desde Argentina!!!
Dale rosca kpo! Son un viaje de ida las electronicas
Hey Ralf! Just got ezdrummer3 working, though I can't get back to the main screen after setting up the ekit preset. Where do you click to get back to the main screen to select drum kits, sounds, etc?
Drumtec. It would be worth explaining the role of the Presonus, as I'm sure myself and others are a bit baffled by thd use of audio interfaces. I can't work out if it's something I can use to help with sending signals from My TD30 to my macbook pro, or from the macbook to my earphones. Do audio interfaces help with latency issues? If they do, in what way? It woukd help to explain I think and might encourage more drummers to purchase Drumtec gear. (Currently using a TD30 with some drumtec kits, macbook pro M3 max and EZDrummer 3).
Supports EZDrummer the Digital Snare/HiHat and Ride (Position Sensing) with the TD27? What Reason there is to upgrate to TD50 when VSTproducing better sounds than even the High End Roland Moduls?
Can use the same outputs of td 17 to conect to mixer
Thanks for this! Stoked to try it. Doesn't look like your other high hat trigger is plugged in. Is that something I should do?
Which one do you mean? :) I am using a VH-10 hihat, pad & controller are both connected to the TD-17 module in the regular way. Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV ah ok in the video the controller underneath didn't look plugged in
I still deal with latency quite a bit. Even with an audio interface
I do have an Asus laptop with decent specs. Would it be in my best interest to get a Macbook?
@drumtectv when I turn on vender mode on my Td17 it looses connection to my mac , like the module is not connected. Only works in generic. Also ezdrummer will not show the td17 as midi audio out ?? Any help please 🙏🏻
would u recommend the midi or the usb connection for the td 17 module ?
Both work equally well I think, for the midi connection you'd need a separate midi interface though. Kind regards!
i connected my Mac headphone out directly to my Drum Amp but the sounds are not the exact same as listening thru headphones. Any advice. thankyou
Still better than any stock kit from any sound module
And that to
Try ATV aD5 or Efnote 7...
I hate all of this vst without dynamic...

But the samples dont have a real dynamic, they sound nice but not organic.
Can this be used for Live Gigs??
se puede hacer esto en un modulo td15?
sounds great! there is any reason to buy the 50 module? or buy a td50kv2? the difference are only the native sounds and the quantity of trigger inputs jack?
Hey Braian, sure there are reasons for that :) You can hook up the Roland digital Snare/Ride & HiHat pads to TD-50X & TD-27. You have many more trigger inputs and outputs (symmetric, great for live), as well as features like positional sensing on the snare/Ride/HH, that the TD-17 doesn't have. Also the TD-50x sounds considerably different from TD-27 and TD-17, so in the end it's really up to you and your individual needs & preferences, which one you choose. Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV if I use this kind of programs to put the sounds I lose the positional detection... the 50's sounds are better than the 27's, but maybe there are programs like these that have better sounds than the native ones, for live recording/playing. I would like a video about it
@@bvog99 Superior Drummer supports positional sensing on snare / ride too. There's only an older demo on SD3 unfortunately:

Kind regards!
Una pregunta no puedo ponerle sonido así mismo en ves con una computadora podré con un table iPad ?????
Question is.... why do you play speed metal on the prog kit?! :D great as always, super demonstration!
:-D Hey Leandro, thank you! Well, honestly I don't always exactly "agree" with some names of module or sample library kit presets. I like to use drum sounds in a way they feel right to me, regardless of the preset name honestly ;) Kind regards!
Can this also apply to alesis crimson kit?
Got myself the EZD3 and having problems mapping the split pads (head/rim seperation) to add more cymbals. Is there a video explaining the process? The software works great on the basic layout of the td17kvx (no extra pads) but as soon as I try to add splitted pads it just won't recognize them ... 😐
Hi Konstantinos, I guess you have to remap the bow/edge trigger zones to different instruments inside EZD3 using the mapping button? Kind regards!
Would you be able to do a similar breakdown for the TD12? It has no USB output which makes setting this up very frustrating
Hey Stu, you can just use a midi cable & hook it up to your audio/midi interface. From there, the procedure would be almost the same, only that you're not monitoring through the module itself but the external audio interface. Kind regards!
the program imports the sounds on the control unit or can I use them only through the battery connected to the pc and to the program?
Hi Riccardo, as you can see in the video, you have to hook up your module's midi output to your computer/audio interface. Kind regards!
Hello, how did you set up crash center zone to that "ride" sound of the crash?
Hi Dugi, there are only bow/edge sounds on the crash, no bell. Only the ride cymbal has 3 zones including a bell zone. Kind regards!
I haven't tried this yet because I'm waiting for my copy of EZdrummer to arrive. Question beforehand: it says 'Download & install audio/midi driver for your module' .... from where? Is that a Windows driver?
Nevermind, I found the answer on the Roland website. Do have a different question though. There's a lot of talk of an audio interface. Do I need one if I have latency issues? Or is that simply a cpu problem in my laptop that can't be helped?
Hi! I have a roland td07 dmk and ez3 and I'm having problems with the crash when a try to make a choke and grab to silence it. Sometimes works and sometimes doesn't and sometimes after a choke the cymbal stays like muted without holding it. Do you have any idea on this? Thanks!!!! Great Video and playing by the way! Cheers
Which midi mapping preset are you using inside of EZD3? Have you tried using the TD-1 preset yet? Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV i tried with td-1 and td-17. Have the same problem with both. Also tried with generics
@@marcoiacono Hm that sounds weird, have you checked if the cable is too lose on the cymbal pad maybe? It should work with the TD-1 mapping, as it is practically the same setup / cymbal. Kind regards!
@drumtecTV i will check those things again. What about the midi driver setup on the module? maybe changing that? Thanks for your answers!!
@@marcoiacono Hm, no I didn't apply any changes inside of the module, midi output should be Roland standard if you haven't changed anything.
Will I be able to record into garageband while monitoring sound through the module with this method?
Haven't tried this with Garageband yet, but yes it should work too I guess. Kind regards!
Hi Ralf, i have diabolo 13 snare with td17 module, how to map diabolo snare in ez drummer 3 with td17 ? I set td 17 preset but when i hit head into ez midi map monitor i see" zone trigger" indicator on (not center indicator ) should i left this "zone trigger" parameter for head or change it with center into midi mapping ? have you left default td17 preset setting or have you change something on snare midi mapping into ez3
+?
Hi Emanuel, are you using the correct trigger settings inside of your TD-17 module? Please get in touch through experts@drum-tec.de to receive those, then it shouldn't be a problem to use the mapping preset in EZD3. Kind regards!
@@drumtecTV yes I have correct trigger setting for diabolo in module. My doubt comes because all other ez3 pad in td17 preset are mapped with center and rimshot to default but snare has trigger with zone trigger(for head) and rimshot to default. It work, but trigger slightly different sound between "zone trigger " and 'center' in mapping panel. Have you notice this? What map parameters do you use for snare head, "center" or " zone trigger"?
@@emanuelpelide7667 I wasn't actually aware that EZD3 has a "zone trigger" articulation, as it doesn't support positional sensing at all (only SD3 does that). And TD-17 on the other side is not putting out any positional midi data neither, so I don't know what that's supposed to do in EZD3 😀 Well, you might just remap to center/rim by using the midi learn button? Kind regards!
Nice content! I use my old TD-20 with SD3 and EZD3. However, setting up the hihat (VH-12) has been always a nightmare. Do you think upgrading my module would solve this issue? This drumtec pack includes any kind of improvement regarding to this?
Hey Roger, I had no problems with this combination of TD-17 & VH-10, and have also used TD-50 with VH-13 / VH-14 with great results. all those should be working flawlessly with the appropriate mapping preset inside EZD3/SD3, kind regards!
@@drumtecTV thanks for the reply!
i have the td50 and td17 with vh10 and vh14dh respectively. i can confirm both work quiet well with the presets. i did adjust the open/close parameters a little bit on ez3. also used the optimized for edrums setting in ez3.
They added new hi hat mapping feature. Supposed to be easy now
I am curious how you like to set the trigger sensitivity levels when triggering a MIDI sound source such as EZDrummer 3. My TD-25/EZ setup is either too sensitive “machine gun” sounding or not triggered at all on ghost notes. I don’t think I’ve found the sweet spot yet.
Same problems with Alesis
i have the same setup, but ive got problems with the volume. does anybody know, how to fix this? what plugins are you using? danke
What problems with volume? Volume too low?
Hi guys. I have a problem. Im using a Roland Td17 with Ez Drummer 3 and I cant adjust the articulation of the hi-hat. Ive tried all. Please, can you help me? Thanks. Massimo from Italy.
Hey Massimo, what exactly is not working about the hihat please? Are you using the Roland TD-17 mapping preset inside of EZD3 already, and is the VH-10 configured corretyl inside the TD-17 module? Kind regards!
No hi hat articulation. Only full open or full closed. I follow all the instructions but same problem. The hi hat is the Cy-5. Thanks a lot.
when i connect my laptop with ez drummer through my drum speaker it makes the drums sound really bad.
I use a Eurolive B112 speaker kinda need some help. I'm kind of speculating its a speaker problem.
Make sure your audio device type is on ASIO not direct sound that solved my speaker problem
@@80HDDrummer ok thx
Can I use a Roland TD-50X for EZDrummer as well?
Sure!
Is it as easy to use with the Yamaha DTX Pro module?
Did u find any answer?
Unfortunately not. I’m blind and it’s hard for me to run a computer without help.
Hi Dustin. Yes. It's literally plug and play. You can choose the DTX Pro module from the drop down menu to ensure the midi is mapped correctly. I have a DTX Pro at home and use EZD3 all the time.
Do you have a MacBook? I have an audio interface with am Asus laptop and still experience a lot of latency 😢
Does this set up fit with efnote 5x?
Hi, you can trigger external sample libraries with any sound module that has a midi out:

Are these also possible to adapt to the TD-20x?
Basically all Roland Modules from this millenium
@@01derendorf which is the cheapest, USB capable Roland drum module out there, which has multiple physical outputs? I always thought if you use EZDrummer, you always have to use the headphone outputs of the cumputer.
I'm thinking about setting up something like this in a live environment, and if there was a module whose outputs could be used as an output of the software, then I wouldn't have to buy a dedicated soundcard for it!
@@galgogergo U use the output of the soundcard/module which is connected to the computer, and it better be a good one with low latency...

@@drumtecTV Yes! It wasn’t in the audio device settings as an option, I figured out what I did wrong! I didn’t have the setting in my module changed to vendor mode and as soon as I changed that all of my problems went away immediately!
