    Just seeing this now, I've been using SD3 for probably about two years now (with a DTX900 kit). I love the program thus far, there is many features that are very in depth and beyond my every day use (ie: can individually choose how much bleed comes through each microphone, from each individual piece of the kit).
    I find the quality of sounds exceptional. I've purchased a couple expansions: the only downside I noted was that if you really like a certain sound (ie a Black Beauty Snare from a certain expansion), you can't get that same sound to play through a different expansion as the two expansions would have been recorded in a different studio/with different microphones... BUT depending which DAW you use, you could add multiple SD3 VSTs (ie make a 'layer' channel in FL Studio DAW), so that you can trigger both expansions at one time and get every sound you desire from every different expansion you have, so long as your computer can handle the processing power.
    All in all, great program, and would highly recommend for E-drummers !
    Cheers for the review on the program, Justin !

    I got SD3 around Christmas time to improve the sounds from my TD20X and love it, although I did soon after get the Metal Foundry SDX upgrade as I particularly wanted some more cymbal choice and that happened to be in the January sale. As a few people have pointed out load times will vary massively depending on your hardware, a fast SSD is highly recommended but the other thing you can do is pick and chose the articulations you load. So if you find yourself playing a particular kit a lot, but never choke the cymbals, or never play sidestick you can deselect those articulations and save it as your own custom preset and that can dramatically reduce the size and hence load time. Also things like if you only have two toms, remove the additional toms that are in the preset that you can't trigger. I initially had some serious latency issues so for recording I was monitoring the TD20X directly and recording the MIDI so I could then play it back through SD3 and I would sometimes need to alter things like the velocity curve or the snare zone position to ensure it played back roughly as I was hearing it from the TD20X but I eventually did a complete re-install of Windows 10 and the latency issue went away, so it was probably some old software I had installed which was causing the problem so now I can monitor SD3 directly and it makes recording a whole lot easier. I also really like the MIDI editor that's built it for when I want to quickly create a backing track. The one thing that does annoy me though is the stereo position of some of the cymbals. You can add a cymbal as the left most one on the kit and it will play out of the right speaker. The only way (I have found) to get around this is to add it as an additional instrument so that rather than it being in the overhead channel with all the other cymbals it gets it's own channel and you can adjust the pan how you want it. But the downside with that is it then isn't mapped to that cymbal on your kit and you have to adjust the mapping to make it trigger. So there are improvements that could be made but overall I love it. It is however the only drum software I've used so I have nothing to compare it to.

    I got it when it was released and have been triggering it with my keylab 88 and various midi controllers as a guitarist keyboard player but just picked up an Alesis e kit to get the real drum feel although I just started I find that I do get the ideas in my head into protools better than browsing through my whole libraries as I still have pretty much every library for ez drummer 2,
    So wish me luck drummer dudes hopefully I can get the basics down with the help of 65 drum vids

    Another brill video. I am setting up for recording from scratch and I just have a Jobeky kit.
    1. Are there trigger problems/latency if I just went straight to SD3 via a D-drum trigger?
    2. Alternately, Roland's new TM-6 has 8 track USB recording, thou not SD3's deep editing?
    Generally think it best to get recent gear so appreciate a TM-6 review - when it's out!

    My reaction to Superior 3. I love it. I had Superior 2 with the Progressive Foundry SDX and The Metal Foundry. Like you I really hated how it took them forever to update the UI and be able to resize the window. Superior 3 fixed every single thing that i didn't like about SD 2.0. One of the best things is that by having other expansions, I can make mashup kits or bring cymbals that I've had before. So I have access to so many. Of course, more is not always better, but like I said I really like the sounds. I own an Alesis Nitro kit. At first I had to change the Midi layout so that everything triggered right. Then a few weeks ago they released version 3.1 and included presets for so many different e drum sets, so that it is really easy to just get up and running. Because they changed the whole midi mapping area, it is easy for me to change what my cymbals map to. Im able to make one of my cymbals a china or a splash much quicker. The built in effects are ten times better so the mixes that artists/producers do for the presets sound better, I feel less obligated to mix in my DAW 100% of the time because honestly the mixing within SD 2.0 was garbage. Also it needs to be said that I get a lot less latency in standalone mode. Lastly, the ability to edit Midi parts within the UI is great. They borrowed the design from Cubase it looks like. It has made transcribing drums less frustrating. Worth every penny fo me. I'll leave it there.

    I stream drums on twitch and was using an alesis dm10 so obviously I was pretty dissatisfied with the drum sounds. So a little over a year ago I picked up superior drummer 2 to improve the quality of my sound and it was such a great decision. Of course playing on alesis pads was also a problem as they were prone to break quite often. So it became clear that I needed to upgrade my physical ekit at some point. So earlier this year I put together my roland kit with a td-30 brain. My hope was that the sound quality would be good enough for me to not have to use superior drummer, but despite how good the td30 was it couldn't match the sound quality. So I then made a decision to upgrade to superior drummer 3 and man was I blown away with how much better it was compared to 2. Even processing my old kit that I used on 2 I was able to notice a substantial difference in sound quality. I'm still trying to dive deeper into sd3 so I can take advantage of all their kit building features, but I'm very happy with sd3 and would absolutely recommend it.

      Search online to download a driver called ASIO. It is free. Once downloaded, inside SP3, you'll have to figure out how to switch your driver selection to that new ASIO driver. Next, launch the ASIO control panel and decrease the buffer size as low as it will let you go. This should reduce latency to around 6ms, which is playable.

I watched your other video that talks about pad compatibility, and I haven't completely wrapped my head around the different trigger types. All I know is it's a 3 zone snare pad, and TRS jacks have 3 connection points, so a trigger should be a trigger should be a trigger. Thanks!

    It still seems amazing to me that after all these years, in my opinion, nothing has matched Platinum Samples (and thus BFD3) for sound quality. They simply recorded their samples at higher velocity layers and dynamic layers than anything else before or since and it absolutely makes a difference especially when triggering from an ekit.

    • @minhuang8848
      @minhuang8848 Рік тому

      I mean, it doesn't get better than SD3 and those samples, ambiance and resonance tracks alone are as high-fidelity as any recording could possibly get. Maybe you prefer the out-of-the-box sound of preset kits more, but as far as the full package is concerned, SD3 simply wins by virtue of completeness and usability. Most sampled kits are kind of great and have been for the longest time, but let's face it, nothing is going to be somehow better than what SD3 provides us with and the simplicity with which you can dial in your desired sounds. At this point, it's simply a matter of how much you want to pay for your sample libs.

    • @doublestrokeroll
      @doublestrokeroll Рік тому

      @@minhuang8848 Sorry but it's the other way around. SD3's packs from the majority of things I've looked at come far more pre produced than BFD. BFD's entire reputation is based on totally unprocessed raw samples. Platinum Samples are slightly more "produced" because they were made by big name producers and engineers like Andy Johns, but they are still very raw overall.
      Again....no SD3 sample packs are recorded to the level of detail of Platinum Samples. Some PS kit pieces have up to 256 velocity layers. Nothing SD has comes anywhere near that level. SD also uses scaling from what I understand, to "fill in the blanks" between those velocity layers.
      BFD is a much more difficult software to use than Superior because you can't just get the best sound out of the box. They're raw like a real studio recording. It's up to you to mix and master properly. But the starting point is better and more detailed.
      "Better" depends on what you want. I want realistic raw drum sounds because I'm mostly playing for myself in real time and I want the sound and feel like I'm in a room with real drums.
      If your producing and want something that works quickly with minimal "production" superior would probably be a better choice.

    • @minhuang8848
      @minhuang8848 Рік тому

      @@doublestrokeroll You're definitely mixing up EZ Drummer (which is just as great a toontrack product) with SD3. Yeah, some presets have light processing done to them, but other than that, you get pretty clean sounds. There is no appeal whatsoever to getting unprocessed recordings anyway (as far as I and most producers are concerned), just adds room for mixing mistakes to compound and be awful.
      256 velocity layers are also super moot considering perceptual threshold in even the most acute listeners, especially if we're talking hit variations and all that jazz working within the engine. It's all just esoteric at this stage regardless, you can arrive at the same result with either toolkit and no amount of additional nuance will somehow make either vst work better, short of UX. It sure is a matter of preference, but I'd challenge anyone to program some drums I can't perfectly replicate with most contemporary virtual instruments - including actual kits for that matter, something plenty of sampling hardliners still won't quite accept in their lives. There might be more work involved, but it leading to a product that is better than SD3 in any notable way is highly debatable.

    • @doublestrokeroll
      @doublestrokeroll Рік тому

      @@minhuang8848 No, I'm not. I know exactly what Superior Drummer is. So you're basically saying because YOU can't mix properly then it can't be of any use to anyone....lol. What an absolutely terrible take. And I'm not a "producer". I'm a drummer. I want the most real sounds possible. I get that if you've never played before you might not understand what real drums are like, but just because it's not what you do doesn't invalidate what I or others in my situation, want out of a drum plugin.
      It's not moot at all. There you go again inserting your bias in like it's some kind of universal. Again, you're obviously not a player so you don't understand the nuance that drummers can perceive when playing. That's fine, but your situation isn't everyone's so you kind of need to get off your high horse. I can tell packs are limited in samples or scaled when I play them in real time on an ekit. Simple as that.
      And it's also obvious you've never had any experience with the BFD platform or Platinum Samples packs. There is no doubt Superior is an excellent product, and in recent years BFD hasn't really helped itself with all the changes there, but it doesn't change the fact that for my needs they remain the best most realistic samples on the market in my opinion.

    Tried looking if SD 3 works with Roland TD-17, but I don't see it on the list. Has Roland/SD3 made any changes to it being added or would it be better to get another E. kit to work with Superior Drummer 3?

    Hey Justin, another great video thank you. Can you give some recommendations on minimizing latency? I use a Mac and my latency is pretty low but not if I use EzDrummer (in my case) as a hybrid solution with acoustic drums. I get an almost reverb like delay. As small as it is. Thanks, Chris

      Lower the buffer size down to 32 or 16

      @@65Drums Ummm, okay you solved that quickly. :) Because of this video, I realized I was lowering the buffers in Reaper not EZ Drummer. Oops. Works like a charm. This might change my whole approach for hybrid drumming. Thank you, thank you. Your videos have been great and entertaining.

    I’m getting the Roland TD -17. Is there an update on SD3 for that choice. I’m using Roland triggers on my acoustic kit. Same as Sammus 66. He doesn’t mention latency. But I hear a lot of people complain about it. I’ll get aios4all. Anything else I could do?

    So I'm a noob. Can you play all this live with no latency? Is SD3 desgined for recording midi? Am I going to get much better sounds with this than the stock sounds of a TD17 kvx? I want to record using midi with a TD 17.

    One annoying thing is that the cymbal positions (2,3,4,5 etc.) differ between SD2 and SD3, causing - when using the exact customized MIDI map, mind you - that my B2 note (cymbal bow tip) triggers as it should in SD3, but is triggering ride bow when using older libraries. So in essence necessary to not only create a standard MIDI map suiting my Yamaha DTX900 for SD3, but also separate ones for older expansions in SD2.

    I started with EZD2 and "upgraded" to SD2 and was disappointed. My fault but I haven't read properly and didn't realise that SD2 is not a stand alone app. I do own DAW so no problem but having to run additional software to just play for fun was a bit of a chore.
    When SD3 came out I almost immediately jumped on board and don't regret a single penny I've spent on it.
    I don't play anymore but as VST, SD3 is in all my recordings. And if I DO have a live drums recorded but I need that little boost from time to time the Tracker section of SD3 is a marvel.

      I have been a BFD user since 2. Listening to this I still feel like BFD3 is better for my needs. Superior always sounds so "produced" to me. Plus every time I check the stats, they never seem to record the samples at with as many dynamic or velocity layers. Especially when you bring in the Platinum Samples expansion packs that are available with BFD. In my opinion no drum software before, or since has been better than the platinum samples kits. They have pieces that are recorded up to 256 dynamic levels, and in my opinion that makes a huge difference when triggering from an ekit if "realism" is what you're after. Frankly the platinum samples kits are a step above the regular BFD3 kits too.
      It is a bit unfortunate that BFD seems to be struggling to stay alive though. They are now on another new parent company so hopefully this one will allow them to get back up in the market.

    I’m very new to drumming, well I used to some 8 years ago but had to sell my drums due to financial reasons. I have an Alesis Strike Pro kit now and I just bought Superior Drums 3 days ago. I have it installed on an old gaming laptop and it works very well. The sounds are awesome. The sounds are better that’s the Alesis Strike module for the most part (and the Alesis sounds are not bad to begin with) and in my opinion far better than the Roland sounds (based on playing a few lately and my last kit) It’s pretty simple to use out of the box but some may struggle with those big downloads. I have a 1GB up and down so it was actually a quick process for me. Through headphone the sounds sound even more awesome than through a PA, having said that I like to use my PA so I run a link from my Midi interface to me PA. Latency, your going to get some, but if you use ASIO driver like I did you can get it right sown to about 5ms, its unnoticeable. You could also use a Midi interface with Thunderbolt and that may also help to bring it down. I think the more CPU power and Memory you have may also help, I have 7 cores on my CPU and assigned 5 to SD3. Its a lot of money, especially if like me you have just bought an expensive drum kit, but the sounds are worth it alone IMO even if you dont use the rest of it. Oh, one more thing, you will need to tinker to get Cymbal choke to work. This does work work right off the bat, or at least not for me with my kit. I am only a newbie when it comes to drums, but if I can help anyone with any questions I’d be happy to answer them. 65 Drums, great channel, I watch every video, I love the way you come across. Please send me free stuff :). I hope this helps someone :)

    I have a question for anyone who can offer some advice. I have a hybrid kit for home practice utilising low volume cymbals with the Yamaha EAD10 module (which I use with my acoustic kits as well, so a very handy gadget.} I'm thinking about potential uses for Superior Drummer 3 if I get it. The EAD10 allows for recording in midi and audio. Does that mean I can play along with Superior Drummer 3's kits. And if I record a song on my Mac will Superior Drummer 3 recognise my cymbal sound and give me the option of replacing them with their own library of cymbals. I'm a newbie to VSTs, so any feedback appreciated.

    Still struggling with latency with SD3. My 2Box Drum-It 3 is MIDI into my Audio-Interface, a Focusrite 18i20, then from there it is USB to my laptop for Scarlet Mixer Control and SD3, then back out from my Focusrite 18i20 to my powered monitors. When I select ASIO, you cannot alter/select the buffer/latency rates.

    • @odlshow6098
      @odlshow6098 5 років тому

      Asio has it's own menu, entirely separate from superior drummer, in which you can reduce the buffer size in order to get latency down to 6ms. The menu I am talking about isn't part of superior drummer. Usually there is a button somewhere to launch the asio control panel, so look for that.
