It hit hard when you talked about the healers getting infected. My dad is a fireman and contracted COVID around Christmas time. It’s just so amazing how these people risk their lives every day to save other people’s lives.
One of my fondest memories in WoW is establishing a quasi-triage center with about 15 other Priests outside the gates of Orgrimmar to try and contain this thing as best as we could. You can imagine how well that went.

That could have been something you could buy for the dungeon and then the healers could actually do their job and would have still proven a challenge since it would have taken off a high level gear slot. I remember this, man this was crazy. It was my first time visiting Iron Forge. I traveled from Teldrasil, went to Darnassus where I found a Dwarf who told me a place where I could find someone to craft a noob level 5 green item I "needed". So I made my journey through the Wetlands and past the snow tunneled tundra. There I....got lost. I originally thought Iron Forge was a dungeon or cave. Then a level 60 Paladin guided me into Iron Forge with the exchange I'd sign his petition to join his guild, his name was Xandran. As we went in I lagged terribly. Then as my game came in I seen tons of skeletons everywhere. Then I seen Xandrun run up to me and yell "run!". So I ran...in circles not knowing what to do. Before I knew it Xan's healt started ticked, then my health, and I died. I respawned and died again, and again, and again. Xandran tried to bubble me to get out but it was no use. I kid you not I ended up getting a res timer of 40 minutes before I was far away enough to not die. And that's how I discovered the Gnome starting area.
Funny timing on this one, they just brought back this raid recently for WoW Classic. So having not heard about the debuff going viral again, means that the patch is still in place.
@@jhonshephard921 I believe there's actually a dev press release somewhere briefly before the release of the raid where they considered making one or two of the servers 'test' areas with the original bugged debuff, but realized it would still be spread very quickly out of test areas.

I'm a Ark player. We have like two contagious disease, and a stat who can make you less likely to catch it. Like, 60% instead of 100% with all the level in it. If we compare the two games, I'm pretty sure we can have field for 1) How poeple deal with know deadly diseases 2) Player Base action 3) Reaction to disease with and without a cure, since you have one in Ark. 4) Reaction to pet transmission.
My parents actually said they were wrong to do that to us kids and said he should've encouraged us when we were young. I just looked at him and said. Yup.
I think that if a university or even the CDC ever do use an MMO as a simulation for how people behave when there's a disease, they would need to not let the player base know. To wait a while before patching in any "symptoms" so that the player's behavior isn't influenced from knowing they have a "virus".
The question is, do they make an mmo or do they use an existing one. If they used an existing one then there is no problem with player communities and population. If they make their own they have more control over the properties of both the mmo and the disease.
@@carlov.4408 I think using an existing MMO is probably the way to go. Making your own is very expensive and there's no guarantee that it'll even be any good. And if it isn't good then people won't play long enough to get the data they need.

@Moral Relativism To explain the joke; when Nidus was released, anything a Nidus touched would gain a disease that would grow as a postule over a week. The gameplay concept was to use that postule to get something (which so far is a combat pet you can take but we're still dreaming for some more stuff). Thing is; that is a pink, glowing, pulsating postule with a TENTACLE coming out of it. And you can't recolor or hide it. And anyone who has that disease, even if it doesn't show, ALSO transmits it. Now imagine a social space, when a new warframe/cosmetic is released... people walking around, showing off... and then just ONE person can run in and give everyone 'The Space AIDS'. Screams of 'NOO MY FASHIONFRAME!' ensue.
A plague spread in an MMO completely by accident? That's incredibly fascinating, and it spread nearly in the same way as real life. Honestly, WoW shows that people could create an MMO, set up like the real world, and with real players. Make it fun like WoW or ESO, and then set up these kinds of situations. That would make some fascinating studies

I was probably hanging out in SW because I didn't need to recall my pet raptor (still have him) for a while. Eventually, I guess I got bored and went to goldshire. Goldshire, if you don't know, is where folks go when they're bored. Screw around, duel, rp, that kind of thing. It is also a low leve zone. This is the second town humans go to, think level five. Why was this the town to be? I don't know....but it was. Anyway, I found myself here and called my pet. I think I was dueling...I recall being surprised taking as much damage as I was, before realizing I had the debuff. I had no idea at the time where it came from when suddenly I just hear a wave of death cries. The lower level players just started dropping. Higher level players, well we were ok, but equally confused. I stuck around for a while trying to figure out what was going on, essentially spawn killing these low level players before leaving. The confusion and rage in general chat was beautiful. I eventually died myself, can only take the debuff so long with no healing, and decided to hearth to menethal harbor in the wetlands. Why was that my home? Because back then that was the best way to get to DA. Sure you could take the boat from BB, but the flight time was stupid long. I don't remember if I had the debuff at menethall, I don't think I did, but I know I went onto the forums after logging to figure out what was going on. I know my story lacks detail, but again, this was 2005. I do remember folks being terribly mad at me when I played my hunter. They blamed any class that could summon and dismiss pets once we knew what was going on.

I really appreciate how supportive you are of staying in for this and supporting health people. My mom is a nurse working during this time and she really appreciates people appreciating her. She recently saw a post saying how “Medical workers shouldn’t get free food or extra stuff, this virus is part of their job. My Mother in Law is also a nurse, but she has been repositioned within her hospital in order to cover areas that needed more help. She had worked her way up to managing the training department of her unit. She was almost never interacting with patients anymore. Now she's out there on the front lines just like every other nurse. Anyone who says "This is just part of their job" isn't realizing there are a number of nurses who have been pulled from their normal duties and units to care for patients where they're needed most. This is NOT always part of their job.
Thank you to your mom for her service!

Interesting... I would love to see how that would work out
@@carlov.4408 I think using an existing MMO is probably the way to go. Making your own is very expensive and there's no guarantee that it'll even be any good. And if it isn't good then people won't play long enough to get the data they need.

Hello, fellow Quarantenno.
Heh. Space AIDS.
@Moral Relativism it's a warframe joke

Too bad you can't send it to your professor
I use GT in a grad level paper and the teacher LOVED it!

You know you're lonely when social distancing doesn't effect your daily life
It's called "solitude" and I quite enjoy it thank you very much.
I like the quiet.
And all my friends live literal miles away so it doesn't make much difference.
The only annoying thing is that the gym is closed and we have no weights. But then again, that gives me time to write my music, so its not too bad.
Or you're an introvert
That's the way us introverts like to do.

Dear DemonGuysaysHi,
Reading your comment was like a roller coaster. I truly could not expect what the next word was going to be. Although like you, I don’t have weights at home, so therefore I ordered some. About a month ago. I don’t live in a big country, you can drive across it in two days. So either the delivery guy is an idiot or he’s just delivering it on a bike

I should show this to people who are like “Games increase Violence and don’t benefit to the world!”
they'll ignore it for sure, pessimistic people are usually stubborn
Man does this bring back memories. I was a Restoration Shaman at that time and remember this outbreak very well.
I think we should have more disease events like this in video games, just as long as it’s controlled. It’s such a cool concept and if it’s executed well it can be a fantastic social experiment.

As a long time player of WoW, this episode was incredible to watch. Even if it did cost more to make than it was worth, I really appreciate you putting this piece forward. Great job.

I remember this. I actually played a hunter then, and accidentally helped the spread. It was before I knew my pet would carry the virus. I hate to admit it, but I let the virus loose, by mistake, in goldshire.
Wow, would love to hear more about that whole thing from a first person perspective.
Gold shire deserved it, you did the world a favor

@@center4nerds I am impressed. Most people spell things wrong because of typing too fast, but you took the extra time to misspell for as four. I'm proud of you.
Was that efficiently aggravating? I'm training to be a toxic/annoying internet troll and I would appreciate any productive criticism.
@@notinorder9630let me first say, this was a long time ago, so some details might be...off. I'll try to get it as accurately as i can, but it was crazy. I had run ZG with my guild. I don't think we cleared it, but we finally made it to hakkar. We knew the mechanic of the disease, but I don't think anyone knew it would be an issue outside. Or if anyone did, they didn't tell me.
When the raid was over, I went about my business. I don't recall what I was doing, but I know I was online for a few hours after the raid.
Wow this is basically describing every single virus in history, not just COVID

Well apparently the regular flu is called a coronavirus. Covid 19 is it's own strain.
