Resident Evil is a stand out icon in the zombie genre. It checks all the boxes. Viral outbreak? Check. Trapped in a building full of the undead? Check. Lots of crazy jumpscares? Check! Yet the scariest thing about the Resident Evil franchise isn't the zombies themselves, but the big corporations that caused them. Think about it for a moment. Could something like the T-Virus cause a real life zombie apocalypse? Well Theorists, sorry to burst your "it's just a game" bubble. We are well on our way there already.

Hey don't worry about it MattPat overlooks fact to make the videos more interesting like he usually does. In this case the zombie would just attack each other so you would just have stay in your basement until they either kill each other or die of stavation, unless you're infected, and I'm pretty sure that the mutants are unrealistically strong in the game (I haven't played it). Also who would do this?

A GAME THEORY!!!!!!!
Me : *HAVENT SLEEP IN 22 HOURS BECAUSE SCARED OF THAT ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE WILL START AT ANY SECOND*
In the end, we've made all this technology to doom us.
Genetic modification, side-effects like bad mutation(zombie v2), or infinitely living cells (zombie v1)
AI, war robots, possible sentience, they could turn on us and possibly a robo-revolution is in order,
Nukes, politics, war, very likely overall, radiation forms mutation, could allow for extreme cell growth and everlasting cells, Space travel, aliens, invasion, they're either friendly or hellish, we'll probably be the first person to pull the trigger if we spot one knowing government stuff.
All this is stuff that is considered the future. Space travel is huge. We want Mars to be available to live on. AI is huge. We want people to do our dirty work while we go on a family trip with the kids. Genetic Modification is huge. We want superchildren, superbabies, supersoldiers, the like.
Now to see the simple consequences of these.
Space Travel: We could find a civilized planet with extremely advanced machinery. Good chance for some gigaturret that, once discovering a Earth rocket, somehow scans the radio frequencies to source it to Earth and maybe shoot a meteor our way. Aliens could be around, not liking visitors. We'll be the first to shoot. The aliens will hate us and fire back. They may or may not have superior technology. If they have better technology, they will annihilate us and our planet.
Genetic Modification: CRISPR is a good idea. But it's too much too soon, of course. Mutations could occur. The first being an extra finger, presumably. This'll alert people, trying to halt it. But they want the future. So they'll continue.
A guy with a third hand appears. This is freaky for people. The CRISPR agency pretends to shut off but just does their research in private. A person with a second head appears. Not your sort of Siamese Twin deal. This extra head is just another you. You talk, he talks. Exact same words. The head also is overall just the same as the other head, unless one gets messed up and the other doesn't.
A person, with EXTREME cell growth comes around. Grows 4 arms, 3 heads, and gets an Eye Shoulder. They try to kill this person but it escapes and invades countries. This hopeless person is ravenous and crazy due to 3 brains. He can't operate them all, so he starts invading countries. People on the news broadcast him. He has very sharp teeth and fingers and claws a news anchor's chest open. He then starts an attack.
These things can all happen. Game Theory is basically telling us,
Prepare for them.
Better not be or else I will hunt him down
"It's not actual reanimated dead, it's just rabies."
"Ah, that's less scary."
"So it could totally happen!"
"Oh... nevermind."
Look at the bright side. You can punch anyone who opens their mouths at you and tell it's because you're afraid of the rabies zombies.

MatPat, first UA-cam comment here! As a researcher in molecular biology, just a quick note in case future videos contain CRISPR related concepts. The mechanism you described is exactly right, but only as bacterial defense against viruses. Eukaryotes (plants, animals, etc.) don't use this form of viral protection, we have much more complex mechanisms. The CRISPR system used in research is the bacterial response to viruses that can be injected into eukaryotes. All the enzymes still function the same way, but we don't actually possess them ourselves. When using CRISPR on animals, it is necessary to inject the CAS-9 enzyme as well, so far that's the only one that's had great success, though there are a dozen or so others. This doesn't at all discount your content, just a forwarding of information for future use in your videos. Thanks for all the great content here and on Film Theory!
Came here for this comment. Maybe it is just my closer proximity to the field, but I feel like his videos on biology are always way more inaccurate and less well researched than other stuff. I remember that I also cringed a lot at the video on Logan's ageing and cell senescence, but the CRISPR stuff was somehow worse! And I'm pretty sure he gets more wrong than you pointed out, though I don't want to back it all up just for the sake of this comment...
@@AlmeidaVaG6 I know sometimes it can sound cringy, but remember that the primary audience of this isn't gonna have a robust background in biochemistry or related fields. So by making it sound more sci-fi than it actually is he is able to connect with more of his audience. I actually didn't notice anything really wrong, just that the mechamisms he mentioned actually happen in bacteria, not which he didn't actually say outright. I don't think it's poorly researched, I think adding all those details would just be too much for this sort of show. The comment was simply in case he wasn't aware of the source of CRISPR and in case that point is relevant for future videos
@@AlmeidaVaG6 I agree with you that it's cringy to experts of that field. I'm an ecologist and particularly interested in bees, and found the several episodes mentioning bees to be cringy, among other biological based videos. Having said that, I do also agree with Austin, and that MatPat has to not over complicate his videos, as the target audience isn't solely made up of experts of each video's topic. This video was pretty good though for improving my knowledge, so I enjoyed it. Also, thanks Austin for the additional information
I agree with you that the target audience needs to be considered, but that for me is even more reason to not spread misinformation. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy his videos like the next guy (though, again, I tend to enjoy them more when they don't involve molecular biology), and I rewatched the video and understood that some points that I thought were wrong, weren't, they were just extremely fastened: I was thinking that viral transfer was a thing long before CRISPR came along and that viruses can do that without any CRISPR mechanism involved, and that I remembered that those chinese geneticists had modified the patient's T cells directly. But then again, I actually don't know if they modified these cells using viral transfer, though I assume they did, so it was not wrong, it just skipped the connection between viruses and CRISPR technology and I'm fine with that and agree with you, that it might've overcomplicated the video. But even what you said: talking about CRISPR without saying that this is a bacterial defense gives the impression that it is a trait common to all living things, or at least that it also applied to humans, which is factually wrong; there are indeed similar mechanisms in human cells, but he was talking about CRISPR in particular, so that is misinformation. I won't make a case about how this is damaging - it isn't. I trust that this video is enough to spark interest in a dedicated mind for it to conduct it's own further research and clarify the inaccuracies. But the changes that would have to be made for the video not to be incorrect are really not that big. As you said, he could've just mentioned that CRISPR is a bacterial response; or take the Logan video: he said that the Hayflick limit stems from chromosomes being pulled apart by the telomeres (the animation to that haunts me to this day!), when it would have only cost a sentence to explain that those "buffers" cannot get replicated in the same manner as the remaining DNA, and therefore get shorter with each replication (not to mention the sentences he would have saved by not having to elaborate his incorrect knowledge of cell senescence). Now, I don't think that you need to make it sound more sci-fi than it is to make it interensting either: the science is already amazing (and if you look at Kyle Hill or the Natural Selection series, you will see how I think this has to be communicated). Which makes me conclude that these mistakes are due to poor research, and the reason that bugs me is because it leaves me with two options: 1. I need to question my perception of his stuff - I loved the legals and economical episodes, most physical ones, and even in the bee episode I think I cringed a bit at epigenetic imprinting, but still thought the ethological parts and especially the conclusion was great. So is everything this inaccurate and I just don't know any better just because I am not as familiar with those fields; or 2. his other stuff is actually as good as I perceive it to be, but then that means that his biological stuff gets less attention and misses out on great opportunities for great episodes (and you must know how biology always falls short in the eyes of other scientists...). I'm sorry for the long response, but tl;dr I kinda felt that I needed to clarify that I am not a hater, I just think that those mistakes can be easily fixed with minor changes that would probably make the episodes a lot better, but unfortunately, the knowledge to recognise those mistakes doesn't seem to be present. And this is the title of my thesis.
@@AlmeidaVaG6The science really is interesting enough on it's own that exaggerating is really isn't necessary, you're right. And I didn't realize that's how telomeres were portrayed in the Logan episode, i must have missed that part. Maybe this could be well served by having a biologist of some sort give them a once over before posting? Just a thought.
Tl;dr detailed stuff for you and anyone else who may care
And by the way, just a tidbit for you on the details, CRISPR actually usually doesn't even involve viruses anymore these days. Now we typically directly inject gRNA, Cas-9, and a section of DNA to replace the old piece, though that last part is sometimes made a chimera with the gRNA, and is left out entirely in knockout experiments. Typically its nice to include an inhibitor of Non Homologous End Joining too to improve efficiency. So usually now we just mix these components together and inject them directly into an embryo. The only reason I'm not giving a citation here is I've actually done this myself. Now that was (and has been heavily studied) in insects, so delivery to humans at anything past the single cell stage gets incredibly complicated, so viral delivery is being eyed as a potentially viable option. But that's actually independent of how CRISPR works, it's just a delivery system.
The reason that Rabies hasn't had an epic outbreak yet is that we've evolved to know that "sick person bad run away or you will be sick".
You know what I mean?
Shame Covid isn't like that eh?

The problem is, rabies is extremely lethal, two to ten days after the third symptoms you die. So every zombie would die after a few days.
yes but look at how we are genetically mutating ourselves we could make a human that could resist the lethalness of rabies but can still have the symptoms.
or hell we could make the rabies virus have the symptoms but make it less or not lethal at all therefore the zombie would be there until killed.

Yup I bet the government is dieing to find a way to kill people and make society collapse on itself. It's not like we don't already have nuclear weaponry to do that btw.

Matpat: and thats how you can make a zombie virus
2021: hmmm interesting
I remember putting off playing the remake for so long because the original was one of my favorite childhood memories. I played the remake and, it was actually better. I was amazed. I definitely recommend RE2: remake for anyone that hasn't played it already, whether you are a fan of the original or not.

Mate, if you’re being serious rn, he’s talking about the bulky rocky guy in Resident Evil 2. Not a virus, but an enemy.
Sometimes I think people who wants to destroy the world but does not know how to do that come looking for Matpats channel for Tutorials
if you are able to genetically engineer viruses, i'd assume you wouldn't need Matpat for ideas. But yeah, he is running a risk here
But what if a 8 years old end up watching Matpat's video and end up deciding to go to medical school for -world domination- research?

I had a normal day once.
It was a Thursday.
So I need a gun, noted
Mario Galvao we all need a gun

I have 2
Guns arnt always a good idea. If it's one zombie the gun can attract more if you shoot.
Mario Galvao in resident evil a gun takes around 5 shots to kill so you would either need a lot of ammo or a melee weapon
Thanks for the tutorial

The issue with using rabies virus as a way to create a zombie virus is that rabies victims can't drink or eat properly, you essentially end up with a "zombie" that will die out in a matter of days if not hours due to dehydration and starvation! 28 Days Later was pretty darn accurate to show how unsuccessful a realistic zombie outbreak would be. Also infected type zombies are easy to deal with and contain, they don't require 5+ headshots to bring down like in RE2, in fact they'll be easier to kill than regular humans due to being weakened. The most efficient viruses are airborn ones not ones that transmit through biting else we would have seen multiple zombie-like epidemics throughout history. Real life zombies in nature are more often the result of parasitic infection since parasites can't really be airborn, behavior-altering parasites are a real thing that turns hosts into the closest thing we have to zombie-like behavior. Parasitoid wasps, nematodes, fungi, bacteria and many more can create living zombies but it's often confined to invertebrates, with the notable exception of certain fish and mammal hosts. The only known behavior-altering parasite to infect humans so far is Toxoplasma gondii and the effects are still unclear... There have been reports of some flu viruses making infected more social to spread the disease but more research is needed!
If you think about it... is coughing a way to get rid of bacteries or it's a way bacteria developed to spread more easily. Tickling the lungs and make us spread them more.
Yeah, they can't cause Rabies virus resides in salivary glands. Water would flush the virus out so it makes victim of itself hydrophobic.
Vannie Bugg why you nerd out one spend such a long time typing a comment it’s useful though
@@tranquilizere5393 Well I've been fascinated with real life zombifying parasites since I was very young, I've been reading a lot about how they manipulate hosts and infect new ones, so all this is actually a pleasure to type out! I suggest reading Parasite Rex by Carl Zimmer if you want a good introduction to the lovely world of parasites ;)
@@Jakubkolo2000 The most drastic and dramatic way a virus spreading is one that affects caterpillars, once infected the insect will climb high on a vegetation and then the virus will literally liquify it's insides then making it explode and shower all the potential hosts bellow... Good luck seeing that in a movie or game though ;)
